Former Tiger joins the Clemson coaching staff as a student assistant coach

A former Tiger has joined the Clemson coaching staff as a student assistant coach.

Dabo Swinney has brought multiple former Clemson players onto his coaching staff, and at the start of fall camp, another former Tiger has rejoined the program.

Swinney announced Friday that former Clemson safety T.J. Green will be on the coaching staff this season as a student assistant coach. The seven-year NFL veteran has some classes to take to earn his degree, and Swinney welcomed him back with open arms.

A second-round pick in the (57th overall) in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, Green was most recently drafted in the XFL in 2022. Another great Tigers is back with the program and ready to make a difference.

The Atlanta Falcons announced Monday they have cut T.J. Green. The sixth-year DB had played 122 defensive snaps through six games with the Falcons this season, recording 12 total tackles and a pass defended.

A second-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2016 NFL Draft, Green has also spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers in addition to the Colts and Falcons.

At Clemson from 2013-15, Green had 162 tackles, one interception and 24 kickoff returns for 505 yards in 980 snaps over 26 games (16 starts) on defense in his career.

Panthers position battles: Who starts at cornerback opposite Donte Jackson?

Now, Matt Rhule is telling reporters there is an open competition for the position.

It has been years since the Panthers have had a respectable and consistent defensive backfield. This year is no different, as the team’s longest tenured cornerback is Donte Jackson, the third-year DB coming off a less-than-impressive sophomore campaign. While Carolina needs Jackson to have a bounce-back season to give the secondary any hope, there are bigger concerns about who takes his old spot at CB2. Now, Matt Rhule is telling reporters there is an open competition for the position.

With less than two weeks until Carolina’s home opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, let’s take a look at some of the top candidates for the job.

Apple (6-foot-1, 203 pounds) has had a mixed bag of a football career. While he has shown flashes of potential, those moments have been offset by inconsistency that’s placed him on his third team in just five seasons.

His career got off to a rocky start with the New York Giants, as a heated exchange with a coach led to a suspension by the team at the end of his rookie season for conduct detrimental to the team. Soon after, former teammate Landon Collins went on a radio talk show, saying Apple was “a cancer” for the Giants.

Apple began to turn things around midway through 2018 when he was traded to the New Orleans Saints. The former first-round draft pick was an immediate starter with his new team, totaling 52 tackles, nine passes defended and two interceptions in 10 starts. His 2019 season was less successful, as he allowed a 100.9 passer rating. Apple is now looking for another fresh start with Carolina.

Panthers place OL Garrett McGhin on IR, claim former Colts DB off waivers

Taking McGhin’s place on the 53-man roster will be former Colts defensive back T.J. Green, who the team claimed off waivers.

The Carolina Panthers put another player on the injured reserve list today. This time it’s offensive lineman Garret McGhin, who is done for the year due to an ankle injury.

Taking McGhin’s place on the 53-man roster will be former Colts defensive back T.J. Green, who the team claimed off waivers.

Green (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) played his college ball at Clemson, where he totaled three pass breakups and 5.5 tackles for a loss in 2015. Green also put in time as a kick returner for the Tigers. The next year, he was picked by the Colts in the second round of the NFL draft. He played 31 games for Indianapolis in two seasons, earning 11 starts and posting 85 total tackles.

Saints sign veteran safety D.J. Swearinger, waive T.J. Green

The New Orleans Saints signed free agent safety D.J. Swearinger and waived backup safety T.J. Green, who could return to the practice squad.

The New Orleans Saints reinforced their defensive backfield on Wednesday by signing journeyman safety D.J. Swearinger, as first reported by Sean Fazende of FOX 8-New Orleans. The corresponding move to Swearinger’s addition was the waiving of reserve safety T.J. Green., who could return to the Saints practice squad. New Orleans has two vacancies there after promoting Green and second-year defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth before Monday night’s game with the Indianapolis Colts.

Swearinger, 28, has played for both the Arizona Cardinals (starting four games and playing 282 defensive snaps) and Oakland Raiders (averaging 42.5 snaps per game in four appearances) this season. He was released by the Washington Redskins late last year after having collected 8 interceptions, 20 passes defensed, and 4 forced fumbles in two years as a starter. He’s bagged 14 interceptions in his 98-game career over the last eight years, having made previous stops with the Houston Texans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With injuries to starting strong safety Vonn Bell (knee), rookie backup C.J. Gardner-Johnson (concussion), and the loss of reserve safety Saquan Hampton, this is a position the Saints needed to address. Swearinger will likely have to pick up some special teams duties to stick around, but he offers real NFL experience and some playmaking ability late in the season. Considering New Orleans’ issues in coverage in recent weeks, there’s worse additions to make than the likes of Swearinger and ex-New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins.

Saints make several roster moves before MNF game vs. Colts

The New Orleans Saints claimed Janoris Jenkins off of waivers, promoted Taylor Stallworth and T.J. Green from the practice squad on Monday.

The New Orleans Saints shuffled their 53-man roster and 10-man practice squad on Monday, hours before their prime-time kickoff with the Indianapolis Colts. Here’s the breakdown.

Veteran cornerback Johnson Bademosi was designated to the injured reserve list, after having suddenly appeared on the Saints injury report with a foot ailment. That held him out of practice on Saturday and apparently ended his season, which is a big blow to the Saints special teams units.

Additionally, New Orleans waived journeyman defensive tackle T.Y. McGill. McGill once played for Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen at North Carolina State, and their brief reunion was a cool storyline. However, the Saints saw enough out of the players on their practice squad to give them the nod for Monday night’s game.

Second-year nose tackle Taylor Stallworth was called up from the Saints practice squad after outperforming McGill in practice over the last week; he logged 300-plus snaps a year ago before exceptional depth along the defensive line demoted him this season. He’s a big body with NFL experience, and should help fill the void left by Sheldon Rankins, who also landed on injured reserve last week after injuring his ankle early against the San Francisco 49ers.

Additionally, the Saints promoted practice squad defensive back T.J. Green. Green figures to contribute immediately on special teams in Bademosi’s place, though injuries to the secondary could force the Saints to get him onto the field sooner than planned. Starting strong safety Vonn Bell and backup cornerback Patrick Robinson were both preemptively ruled out for this game.

The Saints also added a new player, claiming ex-New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins off of waivers. But because they play on Monday night, Jenkins will not join his new team until Tuesday, when they will be required to waive another player in a corresponding move. They attempted to claim former Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens pass rusher Terrell Suggs, but were denied by the Kansas City Chiefs, who had a higher waiver claim priority. It’s not ideal to be tweaking the roster so often this late in the season, but injuries and subpar positional play have forced New Orleans’ hand. At least they’re being proactive.
