On this date: Broncos won Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999

The Denver Broncos won their second Super Bowl in franchise history on this date (Jan. 31) in 1999.

On this date — January 31 — in 1999, the Denver Broncos won Super Bowl XXXIII against the Atlanta Falcons, 34-19.

This game was the swan song for Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, who rode off into the sunset after the game as the contest’s MVP. Elway went 18-of-29 passing for 336 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Elway also also ran for one touchdown, which has been immortalized in Super Bowl history.

In many ways, the 1998 team was the best in franchise history even until now. The Broncos went 14-2 in the regular season, which is still the franchise mark for wins in a season. Running back Terrell Davis became the fourth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in the regular season, not including the playoffs.

Kicker Jason Elam tied a then-NFL record with a 63-yard field goal during the regular season.

As a whole, Denver led in 52 of the 64 quarters in 1998. That continued into the Super Bowl, where the Broncos led from start to finish, dominating the Falcons and former head coach Dan Reeves en route to back-to-back championships.

The 25th anniversary of the 1998 team happened in 2023. Hopefully the memory of these Super Bowl teams resonates in the minds of these Denver players to look to future success.

Broncos to honor Super Bowl XXXIII team and DeMarcus Ware in Week 2

The Broncos will honor their Super Bowl XXXIII team and Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware in Week 2 this season.

The Denver Broncos will honor the 25th anniversary of the team that won Super Bowl XXXIII, as well as Pro Football Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware on Alumni Weekend in Week 2 against the Washington Commanders this season.

The Broncos similarly honored the Super Bowl XXXII-winning team in 2022.

The second-most recent team to win back-to-back Super Bowls, the 1998 squad may have been one of the most impressive teams in Denver history. In the regular season, the Broncos boasted the second-highest scoring offense in the NFL, along with the eighth-ranked defense. Running back Terrell Davis rushed for over 2,000 yards, kicker Jason Elam tied the then-NFL record with a 63-yard field goal, the team started the season 13-0, and Denver finished the regular season at an impressive 14-2 record.

In the postseason, the Broncos cruised past the Miami Dolphins in the divisional round before winning a nail-biter of a game in the AFC Championship against the New York Jets, 23-10. In the Super Bowl, Denver completely dismantled their NFC foes, the Atlanta Falcons, 34-19. Quarterback John Elway retired following the season, capping a Hall of Fame career.

Also part of the weekend will be honoring the Hall of Fame induction of defensive end DeMarcus Ware. Ware signed with the Broncos as a free agent prior to the 2014 season, giving the team a formidable pass-rushing duo with Von Miller on one side and Ware on the other. Ware was part of the team that won Super Bowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers. Ware retired from football after the 2016 season.

The Walton-Penner ownership group has done a superb job with paying homage to Denver’s past, according to Broncos alumni. This is just another example of their commitment to the team’s past, as well as the franchise’s future.

Do you agree with our list of the best coaches in Broncos history?

With the recent hiring of Sean Payton, now’s a good time to look back at the best coaches in Denver Broncos’ history. In our book, wins and losses are important, but not the only factor when determining the ranking. Do you agree with this list?

On January 31st, 1999, the Denver Broncos won their second consecutive Super Bowl (XXXlll) against the Atlanta Falcons, 34-19. In a curtain call for Denver’s legendary quarterback John Elway, the Broncos capped off a 14-2 1998 NFL season by sending Elway into retirement with a Super Bowl MVP.

Outside of an early 3-0 lead, the Falcons never led again in the matchup, with the Broncos’ lead climbing to as high as 25 after Elway’s 3-yard touchdown run pushed the Broncos to a 31-6. Elway’s passing attack — completing 18 passes out of 29 attempts for 336 yards, a touchdown, and an interception — balanced out Denver’s rushing attack led by Terrell Davis. Davis finished the game with 25 rushes for 102 yards.

Although the Elway-Davis connection would be no more after this night, their pairing would provide Denver fans far and wide memories that will last a lifetime. Elway and Davis are currently in the NFL Hall of Fame, and their last Super Bowl win all but cemented their legendary status.

Broncos great Ed McCaffery enshrined in Colorado Sports Hall of Fame

Congrats to former Broncos receiver Ed McCaffery on reaching the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame! Well deserved!

Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffery was officially enshrined in the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

McCaffery played for three teams during his NFL playing career: the New York Giants (whom he was drafted by 83rd overall in the 1991 NFL draft) (1991-93), the San Francisco 49ers (1994) and the Broncos (1995-2003).

McCaffery played a pivotal role as a playmaker for the Denver teams who won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII. During his Broncos career, he caught 462 passes for 6,200 yards and 46 touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 1998.

“I’m glad to join so many of my former Broncos teammates and coaches [in the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame],” McCaffery said in an interview with DenverBroncos.com on Wednesday.

McCaffery suffered a horrific injury on a “Monday Night Football” game when Denver played the New York Giants in 2001. After an arduous rehabilitation process, he came back to play with the Broncos until his retirement in 2003.

McCaffery and his family continue to be familiar faces in the state of Colorado and across the country.

Ed coached football at Valor Christian High School for two years, winning the 2018 5A state title, and he’s now continuing his coaching career at the present with the University of Northern Colorado.

His sons, Christian, Dylan, Luke and Max continued in their father’s football footsteps. Christian is the most well-known of the brothers as a star running back with the Carolina Panthers.

McCaffery joins former Broncos and Hall of Famers John Elway, Champ Bailey, Peyton Manning among other distinguished names of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, which is located at Empower Field at Mile High.

Looking back at the Denver Broncos’ 5 best Super Bowl plays

The Denver Broncos have appeared in eight Super Bowls. Here are their best plays from those games.

Super Bowl LIV is about ready to kick off. Yes, it is the Kansas City Chiefs facing the San Francisco 49ers so the Denver Broncos and their fans will have to wait at least another year to be on this stage.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t relive some of the team’s best Super Bowl moments.

Last year, I counted down the team’s best individual performances in a Super Bowl.

The Broncos have played in eight Super Bowls, creating a lot of memories in them. Many of those memories haven’t been all that pleasant as the Broncos have been on the wrong end of some of the biggest blowouts in the history of the Big Game.

But the team has won three Super Bowls and there were several great plays that had to be made in order to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

Not all of these plays came from Super Bowl victories. These were just the five best plays ever made by the Broncos in a Super Bowl game, though most of them were instrumental in the team’s ultimate success.

No. 5: Cam Newton stripped for the second time: Super Bowl 50

As dominant as the Broncos’ defense was against the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50, the team clung to a 16-10 lead with just over four minutes to play in the game. The Panthers had the ball and faced a critical 3rd-and-9 from their own 24-yard line.

That’s when Von Miller, the game’s eventual MVP, came through to wreak some more havoc.

Miller knocked the ball from the hands of Newton and after it bounced around, T.J. Ward eventually scooped it up and set the Broncos up with a 1st-and-goal which would lead to the game-sealing touchdown.

On Jan. 31, 1999, the Denver Broncos (17-2) defeated the Atlanta Falcons (16-3) 34-19 in Super Bowl XXXIII at Pro Player Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The Broncos were considered 7.5-point favorites going into the game and ended up beating the Falcons by 15 points.

Denver quarterback John Elway was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after completing 18-of-29 passes for 336 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Elway also rushed for a score.

Elway retired during the 2000 offseason after helping the Broncos win back-to-back Super Bowls. One year before defeating Atlanta, Elway helped Denver defeat the Green Bay Packers 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII.

Against the Falcons, running back Terrell Davis rushed 25 times for 102 yards and wide receiver Rod Smith caught five passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. Davis and Smith now rank first on the team’s all-time rushing list and receiving list, respectively.

Seventeen years after winning Super Bowl XXXIII, the Broncos returned to the NFL’s championship game and defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10 in Super Bowl 50. Von Miller took home MVP honors for that contest.

4 Broncos squads make NFL’s list of 100 greatest teams

John Elway and Peyton Manning quarterbacked the four Broncos squads that made the NFL’s list of 100 greatest teams in league history.

In celebration of the league’s 100 years, the Associated Press created a list of the 100 greatest teams in NFL history and NFL Network put together a countdown series based on the list.

Four Denver Broncos teams made the cut.

Coming in at No. 86 on the list is the 2013 Broncos, a team that smashed offensive records in the regular season but suffered an embarrassing loss in the Super Bowl.

Denver’s 2015 team is ranked No. 58, which many Broncos fans would say is too low. It’s a fitting number, though, given that outside linebacker Von Miller wore No. 58 when he earned MVP honors in Super Bowl 50.

Just nine spots up in the rankings from the 2013 squad, Denver’s 1997 team is ranked No. 50. Again, many Broncos fans probably feel that’s too low.

It’s no surprise that Denver’s highest-ranked squad is the 1998 team, which started the year 13-0 on the way to a convincing Super Bowl win. That team is ranked No. 14 on the list.
