Broncos and mayor Mike Johnston want to bring the NFL draft to Denver

The Broncos and mayor Mike Johnston want to bring the NFL draft to Denver.

The Denver Broncos are making important decisions regarding their football future in the 2024 NFL draft hosted by Detroit this weekend.

Meanwhile, there is one man on a mission to make an important pitch to the NFL regarding a future NFL draft coming to Denver: mayor Mike Johnston.

Johnston traveled to Detroit with a delegation of city officials to learn from the host city’s leaders on what infrastructure, planning and execution is needed to make this event possible.

Johnston, along with the Broncos ownership group, have expressed significant interest in showcasing the Mile High City to the NFL world. Recent drafts, such as the ones in Nashville, Kansas City and Las Vegas have featured great locations for the yearly draft. Denver wants to join the rotation.

It would make sense for Colorado to host a draft, as the Rocky Mountains are a beautiful backdrop for the event, and the state is home to the best fans in football.

Johnston was pictured during the first round of the NFL draft cheering the Broncos’ selection of quarterback Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick.

Green Bay, Wisconsin will be the host city for the 2025 NFL draft. Denver would like to host the draft in 2026 or 2027.

Broncos announce plans for new $175 million practice facility and headquarters

This will replace the team’s existing headquarters building.

The Denver Broncos on Tuesday announced they would be building a new, state-of-the-art practice facility at their Dove Valley headquarters beginning in the spring of 2024. They plan to have it completed in 2026.

The facility will eventually replace the current headquarters but will connect to the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse, which was completed in 2014. Once the new facility is completed, the old building will be demolished, and a berm for fans to watch training camp will take its place.

According to a statement released by the team, the new facility will be a 205,000-square-foot, three-story building, bringing together the football and business aspects of the team under one roof. The details, released on the team’s website, show that the building “will feature an additional 21,000-plus square feet of player space — approximately one-third larger than the existing space — for an expanded locker room, meeting rooms, sports performance areas and other areas.”

The project, expected to cost $175 million, will be entirely funded by the Walton-Penner ownership group, which is aiming for it to be completed before the 2026 season. Team president Damani Leach said the group toured the facilities of several other teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, Golden State Warriors, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins and others, in order to get an idea of what to include in the project.

The owners of the Broncos, who first took the reins in 2022, have shown their willingness to spare no expense in trying to rebuild the championship culture of the franchise. Over the winter, Denver made a $100 million investment in various improvements at Empower Field at Mile High, including enlarging the scoreboard.

The Broncos will honor their Super Bowl XXXIII team and Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware in Week 2 this season.

The Denver Broncos will honor the 25th anniversary of the team that won Super Bowl XXXIII, as well as Pro Football Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware on Alumni Weekend in Week 2 against the Washington Commanders this season.

The Broncos similarly honored the Super Bowl XXXII-winning team in 2022.

The second-most recent team to win back-to-back Super Bowls, the 1998 squad may have been one of the most impressive teams in Denver history. In the regular season, the Broncos boasted the second-highest scoring offense in the NFL, along with the eighth-ranked defense. Running back Terrell Davis rushed for over 2,000 yards, kicker Jason Elam tied the then-NFL record with a 63-yard field goal, the team started the season 13-0, and Denver finished the regular season at an impressive 14-2 record.

In the postseason, the Broncos cruised past the Miami Dolphins in the divisional round before winning a nail-biter of a game in the AFC Championship against the New York Jets, 23-10. In the Super Bowl, Denver completely dismantled their NFC foes, the Atlanta Falcons, 34-19. Quarterback John Elway retired following the season, capping a Hall of Fame career.

Also part of the weekend will be honoring the Hall of Fame induction of defensive end DeMarcus Ware. Ware signed with the Broncos as a free agent prior to the 2014 season, giving the team a formidable pass-rushing duo with Von Miller on one side and Ware on the other. Ware was part of the team that won Super Bowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers. Ware retired from football after the 2016 season.

The Walton-Penner ownership group has done a superb job with paying homage to Denver’s past, according to Broncos alumni. This is just another example of their commitment to the team’s past, as well as the franchise’s future.
