Report: JJ Jansen likely returning for 16th season with Panthers

Longtime long snapper JJ Jansen may be back with the Panthers in 2024.

The longest-tenured Carolina Panther may be tenured even longer.

Joe Person of The Athletic dropped a few bits of info in a new report on Thursday. Amongst the nuggets was one on long snapper JJ Jansen, who is currently set to hit free agency.

But according to Person, the longtime long snapper is likely staying put in Charlotte. He writes:

The team’s previous regime was interested in re-signing the 38-year-old Jansen, who has played in 243 consecutive games since arriving in 2009 in a trade from Green Bay, according to a source briefed on the situation. The sense here is Jansen will be back for a 16th season.

Those 243 games stand as a franchise record, one he broke in the middle of the 2022 campaign. Jansen surpassed former kicker John Kasay, who appeared in 221 games for the Panthers between 1995 and 2010.

Jansen has already played under four different head coaches in Carolina—including John Fox, Ron Rivera, Matt Rhule and Frank Reich. So, will Dave Canales become No. 5?

In light of the official hiring of three new defensive coaches, the Detroit Lions also had to subtract a few coaches from the team.

A couple of the departures were already known. Defensive line coach John Scott was replaced during Senior Bowl week by new DL coach and run game coordinator Terrell Williams. DBs coach Brian Duker left for the Miami Dolphins last week.

One more positional coach has also been let go. Cornerbacks coach Dre Bly no longer appears on the team’s coaching roster. Like Scott, Bly was brought in from the college ranks for the 2023 season. His group didn’t show a lot of progress, and his departure is not exactly a surprise.

Defensive quality control coach Wayne Blair is also no longer with the team. His contract expired and was not renewed.

Two senior assistant coaches have also moved on. Former NFL head coach John Fox won’t be back in 2024 after one season as a defensive assistant. Longtime NFL coach Jim Hostler is also out after one year as a senior offensive assistant in Detroit.

A new era of Carolina Panthers football is about to begin.

The team has officially hired Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales as their head coach, ending the second such search in as many seasons. He is now the seventh full-time head coach in franchise history and the 10th overall to assume the position.

Here, with the new guy included, is every head coach that has led the sidelines for the Panthers:

The one new name that was revealed is the new senior offensive assistant, Jim Hostler. He comes to Detroit to replace John Morton, who is now with the Denver Broncos. Dan Campbell explains why he brought John Fox into the Lions as a senior defensive assistant coach

Dan Campbell explains why he brought John Fox into the Lions as a senior defensive assistant coach

Lions head coach Dan Campbell was very pleased to talk about the newest addition to his coaching staff. Campbell was asked about new senior defensive assistant John Fox, the former head coach of the Bears, Panthers and Broncos.

It was one of the first topics Campbell was asked about during his podium time at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine.

After stating that Fox and the team “have come to an agreement” but not officially signed anything, Campbell explained his relationship with Fox and what he hopes the veteran coach can offer the Lions.

“John was the defensive coordinator when I was with the Giants as a young player and that’s where our relationship began,” Campbell told reporters. “A very successful head coach with three different teams in this league. He’s been out of (the league) for about five years. He went back to Indy last year in the same capacity as a senior defensive assistant. Man, you could see the fire in him. I mean, it was impressive.”

Campbell continued,

“He misses the chess match. He misses preparing for an opponent. And just worrying about defense. I think he’s going to be great in helping AG (Lions DC Aaron Glenn) watch his blind spots. Which is what Johnny Morton did for us on offense with Ben (OC Ben Johnson) last year. I think he’ll be a great addition.”

Campbell also noted how much another longtime NFL head coach, Dom Capers, helped the team in the same capacity in 2021.

John Fox joining Lions staff as consultant

John Fox is joining the Detroit Lions staff as a senior defensive consultant.

Former NFL head coach and Indianapolis Colts senior defensive assistant coach John Fox is joining the staff with the Detroit Lions in a similar role.

Fox, who will hold the role of senior defensive consultant in Detroit, joined the Colts coaching staff under former head coach Frank Reich during the 2022 offseason.

With Reich now the head coach of the Carolina Panthers and the Colts ushering in a new era with Shane Steichen taking the helm, Fox will join the Lions staff as a consultant.

He will be joining former Colts running backs coach Scottie Montgomery, who was hired as the replacement for Duce Staley this offseason after the latter joined Reich’s staff in Carolina.

The Colts are still putting together their staff under Steichen—or at least they haven’t announced the full staff as of this writing. We’ve been keeping up with the latest coaching hires and news via our tracker.

Report: Lions adding John Fox as a senior defensive consultant

A report from ESPN indicates the Lions are adding longtime NFL head coach John Fox as a senior defensive consultant

One of the early developments coming out of the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine in relation to the Detroit Lions has nothing to do with the draft. A report from David Newton of ESPN indicates the Lions are adding a veteran NFL head coach in a consulting capacity.

Per Newton, former head coach John Fox will join the Lions as a senior defensive consultant. It’s a role the Lions have not had filled since Dom Capers held that title in the 2021 season.

Fox has 16 years of NFL head coaching experience with three teams, last with the Bears in 2015-2017. The 68-year-old Fox held the senior defensive consultant role for the Indianapolis Colts in 2022, his first NFL venture since leaving the Bears.
