The 49ers historically have helped define NFL postseason success. They dominated the 1980s and early 1990s and won all five of their Super Bowl trips in that span. Getting their sixth has proven to be a long, difficult road.
San Francisco on Sunday will be in its third Super Bowl since the 2012 season, but they haven’t won a Lombardi Trophy since the 1994 season.
In 1994 the 49ers were loaded and after three NFC championship losses in four years finally got over the hump in Super Bowl XXIX, thumping the Chargers 49-26.

Now they find themselves in a similar position. In the last four years they have a Super Bowl loss and two consecutive NFC championship losses, and they enter this Super Bowl with a loaded roster.
If history continues repeating itself and the 49ers can knock off an AFC West team in the Super Bowl, it will end a 30-year championship drought for San Francisco.
