Saints got what they deserved in mistake-filled 20-13 loss to Texans

This is who they are. The New Orleans Saints got what they deserved in a mistake-filled 20-13 loss to the Houston Texans. It was an afternoon full of self-inflicted wounds, unnecessary penalties, bad decisions in critical situations, and poorly-coached players failing to execute basic assignments.

Dennis Allen was given the quarterback he wanted, the assistant coaches he wanted, and the NFL’s easiest schedule and he’s lucky to exit Week 6 with a 3-3 record. Sunday’s loss in Houston epitomized many of the complaints fans have had for the team over the first 23 games of his tenure.

Allen’s decision to settle for field goals came back to bite him when rookie kicker Blake Grupe missed twice, from distances of 52 and 29 yards. Things didn’t go much better when the offense was in scoring position with Pete Carmichael’s play calling leaving little margin for error — it’s just one example, but Carr’s final pass attempt to the end zone fell incomplete as an off-target lob to Michael Thomas with two defenders covering him.

That same poor situational decision-making popped up earlier on fourth down. The Saints needed just four yards for a conversion but they made it a longer down-and-distance situation by dialing up a pass to Alvin Kamara that asked him to cover eight yards and shake two defenders loose. It didn’t work.

Carmichael is who Allen was most comfortable calling plays. Carr is the quarterback he coveted in free agency. Doug Marrone is the offensive line coach he hired to develop Trevor Penning and Cesar Ruiz, both of whom were liabilities in this game. As a team the Saints were penalized seven times for 83 yards, with four of those fouls coming against the offensive line.

This is the team Allen wanted to go into the season with. This loss is on him and the people he’s empowered. At the end of the day they’re a team that’s fortunate to have won as many games as they’ve lost, because it could be much worse.

Here are the Patriots’ 2023 draft picks

Meet the Patriots’ 2023 NFL draft class.

When it was all said and done, the New England Patriots ended the 2023 NFL draft with 12 selections in total. It was a massive haul for a team looking to get back on track after missing the playoffs last season.

The goal going into this draft was obviously to throw as many darts at the board as possible and see what sticks. This wasn’t a situation of coach Bill Belichick hoarding picks for a future draft.

On the first two days, the team focused on beefing up the defense, which was the only bright spot in the 2022 season. They then turned their attention towards the offense and special teams on Day 3.

Overall, it ended up being a solid draft class from Belichick and the Patriots. Whether it’s enough to actually get them back to playoff contention remains to be seen.

Here is the Patriots’ 2023 NFL draft class:

Early game struggles still plague Gators in win over Vols

UF didn’t execute very well for the 3rd-straight game, and that isn’t confidence-instilling with a likely date with Alabama coming up.

The Gators clinched the SEC East on Saturday with a victory over the Volunteers on the road. But the 31-19 victory against a Tennessee squad that now falls to 2-6 on the season didn’t go a long way toward convincing the team’s naysayers.

Sure, on paper it was a solid game for the Gators, especially offensively, and garbage-time points made the final score much closer than it should have been. But Florida didn’t execute very well for the third-straight game, and that isn’t particularly confidence-instilling with a likely date with Alabama coming in two weeks.

Here are five things we learned about the Gators during Saturday’s game.

Week 10 SEC Roundup: Alabama wins Iron Bowl, Rebels take Egg Bowl

The SEC had plenty of action around the league including Florida’s win over Kentucky and the first woman to play for a Power Five program.

For the second-straight week, 12 of the Southeastern Conference’s 14 members were in action on Saturday, as the Arkansas Razorbacks and Tennessee Volunteers were the only two programs to not participate in the November 28 festivities.

As we at Gators Wire have done each week this fall, here is a recap of the happenings from college football’s premier conference.

Five takeaways from Florida’s sluggish win over Kentucky

Florida Gators football’s dynamic duo of Kyle Trask and Kyle Pitts continues to roll along on Saturday as UF overcame a rough 1st half vs UK

The Gators pulled off another three-score win on Saturday, but not without struggling early once again. Florida was trailing with less than a minute remaining in the first half, but eventually, Kentucky’s sturdy defensive play broke down, and UF was able to pull away to win 34-10 in The Swamp.

With the victory, the Gators could clinch the SEC East tonight if Georgia loses to South Carolina. Should the Bulldogs win, beating Tennessee next week would also seal a division title for Florida.

But like past opponents have, the Wildcats exposed weaknesses within a flashy UF team. To make the College Football Playoff, Florida will almost certainly have to beat Alabama, and it still has a ways to go if that’s going to be a realistic possibility.

Here are five things we learned from the Gators’ chalky win on Saturday over the Wildcats.

SEC Roundup Week 8: A review of the abbreviated slate of games

Only three games were played after COVID-19 outbreaks caused the cancelation of four games. Here’s a look at the outcome for those games.

All 14 Southeastern Conference teams were scheduled to take the field on November 14, but the coronavirus (COVID-19) had other ideas, forcing the postponement of four games.

While only three games came to fruition, fans were still treated to some exciting, high-scoring action. As we at Gators Wire have done each week this season, here is a rundown of all the league’s happenings.

Here are five takeaways from Florida’s big win over Arkansas

Florida Gators football’s offense is a juggernaut that is to be taken seriously, especially Heisman Trophy hopeful quarterback Kyle Trask.

The Gators cracked 60 points on Saturday night as their offense once again delivered a gem of a performance, this time against Arkansas. With former UF quarterback Feleipe Franks starting for the Razorbacks, the Gators avoided a letdown against UA, blowing by it by a score of 63-35.

Quarterback Kyle Trask made another Heisman statement, and Florida is one step closer to clinching the SEC East and a trip to the SEC Championship in Atlanta next month.

With the beating of the Razorbacks behind it, here are five takeaways for Florida following the game.

Game Ball Awards for Notre Dame’s Win over Stanford

I still think the Irish win Saturday had Isaiah Foskey not blocked the punt late in the first half because Notre Dame was simply too dominant afterwards to think it was only that play.

A look at the final score and you might not think Saturday’s 45-24 Notre Dame win over Stanford and think they dominated for the entire afternoon.

Although domination eventually came on, for 27 minutes or so in the first half things were anything but for the Fighting Irish.

So who gets the reward of the game balls in today’s win that wraps up a 10-2 regular season?

Let’s check it out:

Offense:

I could go a couple different ways here with Chase Claypool scoring twice and providing the go-ahead touchdown or Tony Jones scoring and putting up 90 total yards but to me it was Ian Book that offensively was the biggest star.

Four touchdowns and no interceptions, his ground game wasn’t as strong today but it was just as lethal when it absolutely needed to be, his fourth down run for 26 yards to the Stanford three while still only leading 21-17 was a huge play by the quarterback who Brian Kelly had big-time praise for after the game (more on that, later).

Ian Book: 17/30, 255 yards, 4 TD, 0 INT, 29 rush yards

KNOXVILLE — The Tennessee Volunteers women’s basketball team continued their winning ways on Tuesday night, manhandling the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions, 92-51.

The Lady Vols were led by double-double machine Rennia Davis, who scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, along with four assists. Rae Burrell came off the bench to add 17 points of her own, as well as six rebounds in an outstanding sixth-women effort. Kasiyahna Kushkituah also added 15 points and six rebounds off the pine to round out the Volunteers in double figures.

Tennessee never trailed in the match, taking their first lead two minutes in on a Lou Brown layup. UT’s largest lead of the game as the final margin, which steadily built up over the course of the match, as the Golden Lions never threatened. Remarkably, the Lady Vols nearly shut out their opponent in the second quarter, allowing UAPB’s first score at the one minute mark and only allowing four total points before the halftime buzzer.

Despite the impressive final margin of victory, the Lady Vols committed 19 turnovers along with 19 personal fouls, and they also missed all 10 of their three-point attempts — all numbers that can be improved upon. Otherwise, the girls looked great, shooting 55 percent from the field overall and making two-thirds of their free throws.

The win moves the Lady Vols to 6-0 on the season, taking their first three road games along with the trio of home matches they have played thus far on their six-game homestand. It also elevates the women’s home record at Thompson-Boling Arena to an astounding 456-45 record over the years.

The Lady Vols next take on Air Force at home on Sunday, December 1. Tip-off is schedule for 2 p.m. ET and can be watched on SECN and listened to on affiliated Vols networks.

KNOXVILLE — The Lady Vols basketball team remains perfect on the year after handily defeating the Tennessee State Tigers at home, 73-43.

The Volunteers never trailed in the game — the last time the match was tied came at the 3:36 mark of the first quarter, after which Tennessee steadily pulled away. UT’s largest lead of 32 points came at the 6:09 mark in the fourth quarter, and from there they drifted to a 30-point margin for the final score.

Sophomore swingwoman Rae Burrell led all scorers, notching 14 points off the bench while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out three assists. Junior swingwoman and SEC Player of the Week Rennia Davis added 12 points of her own along with 11 rebounds for her third double-double in four games to open the season. Junior center Kasiyahna Kushkituah was the only other Vol in double digits, scoring 11 points along with seven rebounds coming off the pine.

The Lady Vols shot 42 percent from the field, including a paltry 26 percent from behind the arc. Tennessee’s 19 turnovers were also a bit of a blemish, but they outrebounded State 60-38 — 18 of which were of the offensive variety. UT shot 62 percent from the charity stripe, showing some continued improvement in that department, but still with some room to grow.

The next game is on Tuesday, November 19, against the Stetson Hatters at Thompson-Boling Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
