NFL and NFLPA agree to virtual offseason program

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the National Football League and the Players Association have agreed to a virtual offseason program.

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the start of the National Football League’s offseason program will look drastically different this year.

With all team facilities closed until further notice, the NFL and NFLPA have now agreed to the terms of a virtual offseason, which will begin April 20 for clubs with new head coaches and April 27 for all other teams around the league.

The voluntary program will include classroom instruction, workouts and non-football education programs conducted in a virtual format. No teams are allowed to resume activities at club headquarters until all 32 teams have been safely cleared to return.

While participation is voluntary, players who opt into the program will be eligible to earn their off-season workout bonuses. Should team facilities remained closed by the scheduled start of minicamps, clubs may conduct a virtual minicamp for veteran players.

Sinclar, YouTube TV agreement will allow Thunder game streaming to continue

Oklahoma City Thunder Games will continue streaming on YouTube TV with the agreement between Google and Sinclair.

YouTube TV and Sinclair reached an agreement Thursday that will allow 19 of the 21 Sinclair Fox Regional Sports networks to continue airing on YouTube TV, according to Variety.

This means the Oklahoma City Thunder games can remain on YouTube TV. Among the approved networks is Fox Sports Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoman.

“We are pleased that YouTube TV was able to agree to terms on 19 of our RSNs and that they will continue to provide subscribers with access to some of the most in-demand sports networks in the nation,” Sinclair senior VP and general counsel David Gibber said in a statement issued to Variety and the Oklahoman.

The agreement lasts until the end of the 2020 Major League Baseball season, according to Variety.

YouTube TV has dropped regional sports networks Fox Sports Prime Ticket and Fox Sports West, and the YES Network that airs games of New York sports teams including the Yankees and Nets.

Are distribution deals causing a rush to agree to the CBA?

The collective bargaining agreement discussions are moving kind of quickly, which is odd for the NFL. Remember, the NFLPA told players to start putting away money into a rainy day fund. Owners weren’t as pessimistic, but they had a lot of negotiating power. There was no reason to think otherwise. Last time we had a CBA negotiation there was a 132-day lockout. In 2018, Richard Sherman basically said a lockout or work stoppage was going to happen in 2021. So, it’s about time to ask what changed. It’s simple. Market forces changed, specifically the NFL and its need to get into television deals.

Look, plain and simple this is insanely smart by the NFL. They are coming off an extremely exciting season and moving into a year with a free agent bonanza. There are exciting young quarterbacks. Ratings and viewership did extremely well. Meanwhile, the NBA has struggled with ratings. The NFL is essentially crushing one of its biggest competitors. The league is going to expand the regular season the playoffs. There’s content galore.

Timing also plays a part here. The NFL should be striking while the iron is hot. Young people are actually interested in the NFL, but other sports could be catching up. It’s still king.

The added games also matter.

The NFL is rushing for a reason though and that reason may be timing. The longer the NFL and NFLPA wait, the more television distribution partners may be able to cry that they can’t afford the asking price. See, as we all know, cable subscriptions and traditional television distribution methods are changing. Comcast is losing money because it’s losing cable subscriptions. Comcast also happens to be the parent company of NBC. NBC will be bidding on television rights. The more customers Comcast loses, the less it will want to pay for the NFL. The same goes for DirecTV and the Sunday Ticket package.

Antennas aren’t making up the difference of people cutting the cord and antennas don’t pay retransmission fees. Essentially, the NFL’s biggest buyers are losing customers, losing the dual-income stream from cable providers because those providers are losing cable subscriptions. The moral of the story is that these traditional television partners are losing money. Wait a year to agree to a CBA and that delays television negotiations. That delay could result in a loss of money. That means the sooner the better for the players and the owners. It’s the way to get the most money possible out of deals — and is also the main reason for a 17-game season and an extra playoff team/game.

There’s an obvious answer here though — or so it seems — and that answer is slicing and dicing the distribution deals to allow streaming partners. Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Yahoo!, Twitter, and even DAZN or ESPN+ have been mentioned when streaming comes into play. The problem is that the streaming market may be the future, but it’s not the now and it won’t be it thing in a year either. It’s going to take time for that market to truly develop. The NFL and NFL can’t afford to wait a year because traditional distribution partners will still be losing customers, but streaming partners won’t have enough market penetration to make it worth the investment. The league doesn’t want a short term deal here. It wants a long-term deal and streaming partners may not be fully-interested in that.

So, the short and simple answer is right now is the best time. It’s why the NFL is pushing the CBA earlier. It’s why players may want to agree to the deal now. It’s the biggest pie they can eat. Otherwise, there are risks. That’s why there seems to be a rush. The smart people who know how to make money are trying to make the most money possible

Drew Brees will stream Super Bowl LIV with Brett Favre and Joe Montana

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is taking a momentous step towards the broadcaster’s booth, starting with Super Bowl LIV.

[jwplayer qnZvfmkx-ThvAeFxT]

Here’s a curve ball for your Super Bowl viewing plans: New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees will be commentating on the game alongside two other legendary NFL quarterbacks in Joe Montana and Brett Favre, in a special broadcast streaming on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. The panel will be joined by FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt.

FOX executive vice president for digital David Katz explained the unique approach to the Washington Post’s Ben Strauss: “The whole goal is a second-screen experience. [Viewers] aren’t locked away staring at a television intently. People have their phones next to them, and we believe something like this is a ‘timeline stopper.’”

It’s an interesting approach to say the least. The star-studded crew will watch Super Bowl LIV from a suite at Hard Rock Stadium, with various other big-name personalities from around the league visiting in at times to join the conversation.

“The idea here is it’s a hang,” Katz told Strauss, stressing how casual the discourse expects to be. This stream will not feature game footage, with the idea being that fans can view it on their phones, tablets, or other devices while the Super Bowl is played on their televisions. “It’s almost like you’re in the living room with these three legends while they’re having a conversation among themselves.” Fans will be able to submit questions to the crew on Twitter with the hashtag #AskTheLegends.

While this is surely a fun opportunity for Brees, it’s a little disquieting given his professed interest in broadcasting gigs once he’s finished playing football. Hopefully he won’t enjoy it enough to leave the Saints too soon, with his contract expiring in March.

“I actually get to watch the game with Joe Montana and Brett Favre. It’s part of a cool piece we’re doing, we’ll be commenting on the game.” Brees said on The Rich Eisen Show. “We’re gonna analyze the game and talk through it as three QB’s just hanging out on the couch.”

There are a number of ways to watch, stream, listen in, and wager on Week 14’s game featuring the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers

[jwplayer FgrNrsL9-ThvAeFxT]

The NFL’s Week 14 schedule is loaded, but there may not be a bigger game to catch than the New Orleans’ tilt with the San Francisco 49ers. A Saints loss puts the 49ers back in the thick of the race for the NFC West crown, and the top-two playoffs seed that comes with it. New Orleans must win this game if they want to hold onto the first seed and the homefield advantage throughout the playoffs that it guarantees.

NFL Week 12: How to watch, stream, and wager Saints vs. Panthers

The New Orleans Saints are scheduled for a noon kickoff with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Here’s everything you need to know to tune in.

[jwplayer WU2Y8Ngc]

The New Orelans Saints and Carolina panthesr are gearing up for their Week 12 showdown from inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. If the Saints win, they’ll be one game away from winning their third consecutive NFC South division title (with a little help). But if the Panthers win, they’ll have a shot at taking New Orleans down to the wire, avoiding last year’s Week 17 farce in which the Saints sat most of their starters to rest for the playoffs.

And if the Panthers lose, well, things could get very shaky from there. New team owner David Tepper has been patient with longtime head coach Ron Rivera and general manager Marty Hurney, but a losing season and an injured franchise quarterback (Cam Newton landed on injured reserve earlier this year) could inspire some anxiety moving forward. Expect both squads to give it their all.

It’ll be interesting to see who suits up for the Saints. Top cornerback Marshon Lattimore missed last week’s game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while resting a stubborn hamstring injury, but was able to participate in the final practice session of the week on a limited basis. He’s officially listed as questionable to play against Carolina and will want to test his hamstring during pre-game warmups to see if he can go. New Orleans also ruled out fullback Zach Line and returns specialist Deonte Harris, so they may need to get creative to fill in for those players.

Here’s everything you need to know so that you can catch Sunday’s broadcast:
