ESPN: Giants OC Mike Kafka could be legitimate option for Seahawks

While the field has narrowed general manager John Schneider still has plenty of high-quality options, including a few wild cards.

The Seahawks’ head coach search began three weeks ago today when they removed Pete Carroll from that position after a successful 14-year run. Since then six other teams around the league have filled their vacant head coach positions, taking several options off the table for Seattle. Yesterday two more came off the board when Ben Johnson and Bobby Slowik decided to stay in Detroit and Houston, respectively.

While the field has narrowed general manager John Schneider still has plenty of high-quality options, including a few wild cards. One of them to watch may be Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. According to ESPN’s Giants beat reporter Dan Graziano, he may be a legitimate option for the Seahawks’ head coach job.

The Giants offense was awful this year – finishing in the bottom three in both yards and points scored. However, Kafka may have playcalling potential hidden by a lack of tools. New York had the worst offensive line in the NFL this season and Daniel Jones remains a well-below average starter at quarterback. With a few personnel upgrades (like he’d have in Seattle) he might be able to produce a far better offense.

The search continues…

Texans OC Bobby Slowik also off the table for Seahawks head coach job

According to Albert Breer at Sports Illustrated, he got a significant raise to stay.

If the Seahawks had their hearts set on hiring one of the NFL’s bright young offensive minds, their options have diminished this week. Yesterday we learned that Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson told Seattle and Washington that he’s staying in Detroit to try to win a Super Bowl.

We also learned that Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik is staying in Houston. According to Albert Breer at Sports Illustrated, he got a significant raise to stay.

Slowik did brilliant work this season with C.J. Stroud, who had the best rookie season of any quarterback since Cam Newton and has a skillset that’s similar to Geno Smith’s.

It would have been interesting to see what Slowik or Johnson might have done with this Seattle offense, but the team still has choices if they want to go this route, defying the conventional wisdom that they’re looking for a defensive candidate. According to the latest reporting from ESPN, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is a candidate to watch if they don’t end up hiring Mike Macdonald.

Ben Johnson tells Seahawks, Commanders he’s staying with Lions

Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has informed both the Seahawks and the Commanders that he’s staying in Detroit.

And now at the 11th hour a mean, hard-breaking curveball has been thrown into the mix of the Seahawks’ search for their next head caoch.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL network, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has informed both the Seahawks and the Commanders that he’s staying in Detroit.

Johnson did the same thing last year, bowing out of the head coach race in order to stick with the Lions as OC. Nevertheless, this time around it comes as a shock as Johnson was the hottest head coach candidate still on the market. The most-recent reporting suggested that the Commanders were going all out to get him, but the Seahawks were still in the running.

Speaking of Seattle, today the team is interviewing Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, whose chances of landing the head coach job just went up.

Three more Seahawks going to Pro Bowl this year as injury replacements

Now we can add three more names to the group Seattle is sending to the Pro Bowl games in Orlando this weekend.

The Seahawks had a whole bunch of alternates listed when they named their three official Pro Bowlers for the 2023 season. That included rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon, first-time Pro Bowl safety Julian Love and nine-time linebacker Bobby Wagner. Now we can add three more names to the group Seattle is sending to the Pro Bowl games in Orlando this weekend.

The team just announced that starting quarterback Geno Smith, star wide receiver DK Metcalf and special teamer Nick Bellore have also been invited to the games. They will be serving as injury replacements for Rams quarterback Matt Stafford, Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans and Lions special teams ace Jalen Reeves-Maybin.

For Smith this will be his second Pro Bowl team – the first was last year coinciding with his Comeback Player of the Year campaign. Metcalf will be making his second Pro Bowl appearance and Bellore his second, as well.

Seahawks HC candidate described as a ‘defensive Sean McVay’

One coach described him as sort of a defensive Sean McVay type

The Seahawks’ head coach search appears to be winding down. Yesterday the team interviewed Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and today it will be Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald’s turn. As far as we know, the team doesn’t have any more interviews scheduled so odds are Pete Carroll’s replacement will be named any day now.

For what it’s worth the rumor mill suggests that Johnson will be joining the Commanders as their new head coach and Macdonald will take the Seahawks job. Let’s hear more about the late-arriving favorite. According to Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, one coach described him as sort of a defensive Sean McVay type. Watch.

There’s a case to make that in the long run hiring an offensive minded head coach is the right call. However, for the time being a defensive schematic mastermind is exactly the kind of thing this team needs in order to get back into the playoffs. We’re convinced that with a coaching upgrade on that side of the ball this team could have won up to 11 games this season.

Macdonald’s chops were on full display in the AFC Championship on Sunday. Even though his team lost, Baltimore held Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to just 17 points and shut them out in the second half.

Eagles to hire Seahawks defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt as DL coach

According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the Eagles are expected to hire Clint Hurtt as their new defensive line coach.

When the Seahawks removed Pete Carroll as their head coach, the team allowed his former assistants to seek jobs elsewhere around the NFL. It’s taken a couple weeks but they’re starting to land with their new teams. Last week the Bears hired Shane Waldron to be their new offensive coordinator, and he’ll be bringing a few more assistants with him.

Now we have heard of where Seattle’s defensive coordinator is going. According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the Eagles are expected to hire Clint Hurtt as their new defensive line coach. Seahawks defensive backs coach Karl Scott is also expected to join him.

Despite having a lot of talent, Seattle’s defense had disappointing results this past season. While they had a strong pass rush, their run defense and coverage were too far below average to field a decent unit.

However, Hurtt’s background is as a defensive line guru and where he’s going he’ll have plenty to work with. Philadelphia has arguably the best defensive line in the league, or at least the most-gifted. Even if they lose both Brandon Graham and Fletcher Cox in free agency, they’ll still be able to start a four-man front of Josh Sweat, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis and Haason Reddick with Nolan Smith coming off the bench.

As for the Seahawks, their head coach search may be climaxing over the next couple of days. They’re reportedly interviewing Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson later today and then Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald tomorrow. The decision should be coming not too long after those interviews are concluded.

The team has also been reported to be interested in former Titans coach Mike Vrabel.

The only other team that still has an opening at head coach is the Commanders, who are interviewing some of the same candidates this week.
