Updated look at Eagles salary cap after signing CB Steven Nelson to a deal

The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a one-year deal with former Steelers and Chiefs cornerback Steven Nelson on Sunday, giving Darius Slay much-needed help on the outside.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that Nelson’s contract is actually worth $2.5 million in base salary and up to $4.125 million with incentives.

With Nelson now in the fold, here’s a look at Philadelphia’s updated salary cap situation.

Darius Slay set to recruit Chandler Jones after pass rusher request trade from Cardinals

Darius Slay has a future in recruiting and hours after he helped the Eagles land Steven Nelson, Philadelphia’s top cornerback has his eyes locked on a pass rusher.

Chandler Jones reportedly wants out of Arizona, and Slay has already started keeping his eyes on the situation. The Eagles currently have two edge rushers approaching free agency, while Brandon Graham signed on for another year this past offseason.

Due $15.5 million in the final year of his deal, Jones is an All-Pro and has logged 49 sacks over a two-year period before a biceps injury derailed his 2020 season.

Eagles cornerback depth chart gets a big boost

Eagles cornerback depth chart gets a big boost with the addition of Steven Nelson

The Eagles added another quality veteran to the roster, signing cornerback Steven Nelson to a one-year deal.

With Nelson in the fold, a perceived weakness will now become a strength heading into the training camp. Philadelphia is still somewhat thin at cornerback from a quality standpoint, but the overall talent of the secondary rose tremendously.

Cementing his reputation with the Steelers, Nelson started all 30 games he played, logging three interceptions, 17 passes defended, and 109 total tackles.

Last season during Pittsburgh’s 38-29 win on October 11 at Heinz Field, Nelson intercepted then Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz twice, on his way to his first multi-interception game.

An aggressive, physical, and smart football player, Nelson should help boost the Eagles’ secondary while giving Gannon a building block for the future.

Former Chiefs CB Steven Nelson to sign one-year deal with Eagles

The #Chiefs face the #Eagles at The Linc in Week 4 👀

A former Kansas City Chiefs third-round draft pick has found a new team.

The Philadelphia Eagles announced on Sunday that they’d signed cornerback Steven Nelson to a one-year deal. A 2015 third-round pick by Kansas City out of Oregon State, Nelson spent four seasons playing for the Chiefs before leaving to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He’d spend just two seasons in Pittsburgh, having his contract terminated in March of 2021.

Nelson, 28, has a whopping 68 career starts to his name. He has experience playing both on the outside and in the slot during his time in Kansas City and Pittsburgh. He offers the Eagles another option opposite veteran starter Darius Slay, who was traded to Philadelphia from the Detroit Lions in March of 2020.

Nelson’s tenure with the Chiefs didn’t exactly end on good terms, which will be an intriguing storyline heading in the Eagles-Chiefs Week 4 matchup this season. The former draft pick had an unceremonious departure with the team on social media, sharing some strong feelings about his teammate Marcus Peters’ exit from Kansas City. He also felt Chiefs fans turned on him.

During his time in Pittsburgh, Nelson never got a chance to face his former team. In just a few months, he’ll have a chance to go up against Patrick Mahomes and the high-powered Kansas City offense.

The Eagles’ patience paid off, as Howie Roseman was able to add another talented cornerback to the roster, at a bargain price.

After signing Steven Nelson to a one-year deal, worth $4 million, Philadelphia’s secondary is quietly ascending up the boards.

Here’s a breakdown of Nelson’s arrival and what it means.

The Eagles have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Steven Nelson, finally adding a talented veteran to the roster to pair with Darius Slay.

Nelson, who is starting his seventh NFL season, will make $4 million according to Jeremy Fowler, essentially winning the bet on himself.

It had previously been reported that the Eagles and a handful of other teams were unsure about meeting Nelson’s contract demands. Nelson has started 46 games the last three years for the Steelers and he’ll immediately upgrade a battered secondary.

Ex-Steeler Steven Nelson finds himself a new NFL home

So much for bringing cornerback Steven Nelson back to Pittsburgh.

So much for bringing cornerback Steven Nelson back to Pittsburgh.

Per source of ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Nelson has signed a one-year deal valued north of $4 million.

The Steelers cut Nelson in March after claiming Pittsburgh was holding him hostage.

If there’s a concern with the Steelers’ defense, it’s at the inexperienced cornerback position. It would’ve been ideal to bring Nelson back for a season — while Cam Sutton (8 starts) and James Pierre (0 starts) have promise, experience trumps hope every time.

Instead, it’s looking like the team may just roll with what it has — at least until cutdowns.

Eagles rumors: Free agent CB Steven Nelson set to make a decision

Free-agent CB Steven Nelson is set to make a decision as the Eagles sit and wait

The Eagles need help at cornerback opposite Darius Slay and the top cover guy on the market is set to make a huge decision.

Steven Nelson took to Twitter recently and let it be known that a decision will be made in the next 24-48 hours.

Philadelphia is reportedly amongst teams that have been hesitant in signing the corner because they aren’t willing to pay him over $3 million on a one-year deal.

Defensive coordinator, Dennard Wilson, has expressed to the media the 2nd option at cornerback is up for grabs and an “open competition.”

Last season, Nelson allowed 57 receptions, while logging five pass breakups, and he was targeted 21.9% of the time.

Nelson also logged a coverage rating of +20.4 for the season as well.

CB Steven Nelson still on the market is good news for the Steelers

Could the Steelers and Steven Nelson be reunited?

It came as something of a surprise when the Pittsburgh Steelers chose to release cornerback Steven Nelson back in late April. From a business standpoint, the move made lots of sense. At the time the Steelers were strapped for cash and the release freed up more than $8 million in salary-cap space.

From a game perspective, the move hurt. Nelson was arguably the team’s most consistent cornerback the last two seasons and while his 67.1 score by Pro Football Focus in 2020 was hardly elite, his ability to make plays and keep offenses honest was a big part of the team’s success.

Having said all this, it is now mid-July and Nelson still doesn’t have a team. Is this because he can’t play? Or maybe he wants too much money? Both could be true. But with only two weeks to training camp, it feels like this could be a case of Nelson just wanting to take the summer off without the responsibilities of OTAs or minicamps. We see this with veterans all the time.

If this is the case, what is the waiting for? I think it would make sense for him to just be biding his time until the end of training camp to re-join the Steelers at a lower salary. This would really solidify the secondary and give the Steelers far more freedom in trying to replace Mike Hilton with guys already on the roster.

What do you think? Could Nelson come back and would you want him? Let us know in the comments.

Darius Slay recruiting free agent CB Steven Nelson to the Eagles

Eagles star CB Darius Slay is recruiting a top free-agent cover guy to Philadelphia

Steven Nelson is one of the top cover guys on the open market and as the Eagles sit just three weeks away from the start of training camp, Philadelphia’s top cornerback is on the recruiting trail again.

After unsuccessfully recruiting Julio Jones, Darius Slay is trying his best to get the former Steelers cornerback to accept the Eagles deal.

Nelson and the Eagles have mutual interest and Howie Roseman has reportedly balked at paying the cornerback’s $3 million asking price.

Nelson started all 30 of the 30 games he played in two seasons with Pittsburgh, finishing the 2020 season with 48 tackles, nine pass defenses, two tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery. He also had two interceptions, both of them coming against the Eagles when he picked off Carson Wentz twice.

Nelson was acquired by the Steelers via free agency in 2019 after a four-year stint in Kansas City.

Still only 28-years-old, Nelson has been one of the highest-graded cornerbacks in football per Pro Football Focus.

Nelson can flourish when forced to play man coverage, and he’s highly efficient when playing zone, Jonathan Gannon’s strong point as a defensive coordinator.
