Watch: Steven Crowl junior season highlights

The Badgers men’s basketball team released the highlights for their star big man Steven Crowl on Tuesday.

The Badgers men’s basketball team released the highlights for their star big man Steven Crowl on Tuesday. The 7-footer averaged 12.1 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting 51 percent from the field.

Crowl and the Badgers failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last five years, but they did make a deep run to semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). During that run, Crowl produced a career-high 36 points in the first round of the tournament against Bradley.

Moving forward, Crowl will look to mentor both incoming big men from the class of 2023, Gus Yalden and Nolan Winter. With Tyler Wahl also returning in 2023, Wisconsin’s frontcourt should be much deeper next season.

Wisconsin men’s basketball 2023-24 Big Ten matchups announced

The Badgers men’s basketball team had a relatively disappointing season in 2022-2023, finishing the regular season with 17-14 record.

The Badgers men’s basketball team had a relatively disappointing season in 2022-2023, finishing the regular season with 17-14 record while missing the NCAA Tournament.

They did make participate in the NIT (National Invitation Tournament), making it all the way to the semifinals where they fell to North Texas 56-54. Overall, they did salvage what was a challenging campaign, giving their roster additional in-game practice together.

Now with the entire starting lineup returning for the 2023-2024 season, Greg Gard and his staff have an opportunity to get redemption. After the Badgers went 9-11 in Big Ten matchups this past season, here’s how their conference contests will pan out in 2023-2024.

Transfer commit backs out of joining Badgers

Wyoming transfer guard Noah Reynolds announced Wednesday that he is backing out of his intention to commit to Wisconsin.

Wyoming transfer guard Noah Reynolds announced Wednesday that he is backing out of his intention to commit to Wisconsin. He has officially reopened his recruitment in the portal.

Reynolds originally stated on April 5 that he’d be joining the Badgers in 2023 after spending two seasons with Wyoming. The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 14.5 points in his second year with the Cowboys and was expected to give the Badgers a big boost in the backcourt.

Considering the fact that Wisconsin reeled in 6-foot-6 wing AJ Storr from St. John’s on Thursday (April 13), it’s possible that Reynolds felt like his role wouldn’t be what he wanted in Madison.

Although it’s tough to see him change his mind, Greg Gard and his staff could now acquire an additional asset from the portal, potentially addressing their need for another big man behind Steven Crowl and Tyler Wahl.

Four-star Wisconsin guard commits to Big Ten school

Nick Janowksi, a four-star class of 2024 guard from Pewaukee, Wisconsin committed to Nebraska on Friday.

Nick Janowksi, a four-star class of 2024 guard from Pewaukee, Wisconsin committed to Nebraska on Friday. The 6-foot-3, 200 pound athlete was offered by the Badgers but chose to go elsewhere for college. The three-time state champion will join Fred Hoiberg in Lincoln.

In what has been a consistent trend for Wisconsin basketball, the team looks likely to once again fall short of the hopes and dreams of fans who want them to get one of the top in-state recruits. The program has shifted to being more commonly associated with Minnesota players (Tyler Wahl, Steven Crowl, Nolan Winter) than those that are homegrown in the cheese state.

As of right now, the only commitment that Greg Gard and his staff have gotten from the class of 2024 is 6-foot-6 three-star forward Jack Robison from Lakeville, Minnesota, home of Tyler Wahl and Nate Reuvers.

Hepburn selected for NIT All-Tournament team

Badger point guard Chucky Hepburn was selected as a member of the NIT’s All-Tournament team following North Texas’ 68-61 title win over UAB.

Badger point guard Chucky Hepburn was selected as a member of the NIT’s All-Tournament team following North Texas’ 68-61 championship win over UAB.

Hepburn produced 15 points (all in first half), four assists, two steals and a rebound over 37 minutes in Wisconsin’s 56-54 loss to North Texas on Tuesday. Certainly part of the reason why he earned the tournament honors was the fact that he nailed five three-pointers in the first half, helping the Badgers out to a 41-29 lead at the break.

Moving forward, although Greg Gard and his team fell short, players like Hepburn, Steven Crowl and Max Klesmit all had huge performances in the team’s NIT run, all of whom will presumably be back next season.

PHOTOS: Wisconsin basketball falls to North Texas 56-54 in NIT semifinals

Photos from Wisconsin basketball’s 56-54 loss to North Texas in the NIT semifinals on Tuesday night:

After a three-game run in the NIT, the Wisconsin Badgers fell to the North Texas Mean Green 56-54 in the NIT semifinals on Tuesday night. The Badgers jumped out to a 12-point lead at halftime but were unable to score a single point in the last nine minutes of the game.

Wisconsin point guard Chucky Hepburn was the team’s leading scorer with 15 points but did not score in the second half. The Badgers as a whole shot 37.5 percent from the field and only 50 percent from the free-throw line.

It was a difficult loss to end a tough season for the Badgers, but hopefully, with many key players returning and an exciting freshman class, Wisconsin will rebound next season.

Watch: Badgers get set to play in NIT semifinals

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team is set to face North Texas in the semifinals of the NIT in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team is set to take on North Texas in the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.

Greg Gard and his players are in a position to win the whole tournament, operating as the highest-caliber program left by far, with UAB and Utah Valley rounding out the remaining teams.

With the likes of senior forward Tyler Wahl, junior big man Steven Crowl and sophomore point guard Chucky Hepburn, Wisconsin seems to have the upper hand over the smaller, non-Power Five schools.

The Badgers’ official basketball Twitter page released a small hype video of their practice/workout Tuesday, as seen below.

Virginia big man enters transfer portal

Kadin Shedrick, a 6-foot-11 forward and former four-star recruit entered the transfer portal Monday after three seasons at Virginia.

Kadin Shedrick, a 6-foot-11 forward and former four-star recruit announced that he’s entering the transfer portal Monday after three seasons at Virginia. As a high schooler in North Carolina, the big man received an offer from Wisconsin in July of 2018 before ultimately selecting the Cavaliers.

Shedrick saw his role diminished slightly in 2022-2023, starting 15 games out of the team’s 30 total, playing 17.5 minutes per contest while averaging 6.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.

With Wisconsin particularly thin behind Steven Crowl and Tyler Wahl at the forward position, Shedrick would provide the team with another experienced option down low, especially if Wahl decides to move on following the conclusion of the 2022-2023 campaign.

Greg Gard and his staff will seemingly do their due diligence when it comes to options in the transfer portal this offseason and Shedrick would be a great get for the Badgers next season.

Colgate forward enters transfer portal

Keegan Records, a 6-foot-10 forward from Colgate entered the transfer portal Monday. He faced off with the Badgers in March of 2022.

Keegan Records, a 6-foot-10 forward from Colgate entered the transfer portal Monday. The big man faced off with the Badgers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2022.

Records and the Raiders took on Wisconsin in Milwaukee in the Round of 64 last March, losing to the Badgers 67-60. In the contest, the big man produced seven points and seven rebounds.

Now in the transfer portal, Records averaged 13.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 67.5 percent from the field, fifth highest in the nation.

With the Badgers in need of help behind Steven Crowl down low, Greg Gard and his staff could certainly reach out to Records to see if he’s interested in joining Wisconsin in 2023-2024.

Badgers connected to Ball State transfer big man

Wisconsin has reached out to Payton Sparks, a 6-foot-9 sophomore big man from Ball State who recently entered the transfer portal.

Wisconsin has reached out to Payton Sparks, a 6-foot-9 sophomore big man from Ball State who recently entered the transfer portal.

Despite being in the midst of deep run in the National Invitation Tournament, the Badgers have remained active in the transfer portal. They’ve reached out to multiple players this week, including Khalif Battle from Temple.

Sparks appeared in 31 games with Ball State this season and helped the Cardinals reach the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The big man averaged 13.3 points and 8.7 rebounds and would be a helpful frontcourt addition for whatever program he ends up with.

Some of the Badgers’ critics have slammed the team for its lack of depth at forward behind Tyler Wahl and Steven Crowl in 2022-2023, so Sparks would certainly help quiet that conversation next year if he ends up in Madison.
