AFC North playoff picture coming into focus for Steelers

The NFL playoff picture for 2024 is heating up as we head into Week 12, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are making a strong case as legitimate contenders.

Currently sitting as the No. 3 seed in the AFC, the Steelers have surprised many with their consistent performances. If the playoffs started today, Pittsburgh would face off against their bitter rivals, the Baltimore Ravens, the No. 6 seed, in what promises to be an electrifying Wild Card matchup.

Led by head coach Mike Tomlin, the Steelers have leaned on their gritty defense and clutch play in key moments. Defenders like T.J. Watt, Cameron Heyward, Donte Jackson and Beanie Bishop have been instrumental in creating turnovers and shutting down opposing offenses. Quarterback Russell Wilson continues to show growth as the leader of the offense and Chris Boswell is, well, Chris Boswell

Baltimore boasts a dynamic attack powered by Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry, but the Steelers handled in Week 11.

As the playoff race intensifies, the Steelers must maintain their edge to fend off AFC challengers to remain a top seed. For fans in Pittsburgh, hopes are high that this year’s squad can bring playoff magic back to the Steel City.

Where do Steelers currently stand in race for playoffs?

As the 2024 NFL season heads into its final stretch, the Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in the thick of the AFC playoff race.

As the 2024 NFL season heads into its final stretch, the Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in the thick of the AFC playoff race. Through Week 10, the Steelers stand firmly as the No. 3 seed in the AFC. If the playoffs were today, Pittsburgh would face the L.A. Chargers, a team they defeated 20-10 in Week 3.

Led by a resurgent defense anchored by T.J. Watt and a developing offense, the Steelers have demonstrated their ability to grind out tough wins, relying on a mix of veteran leadership and young talent.

We all know the Steelers’ defense has what it takes to win playoff games. The offense remains a work in progress, but the sky is the limit with the veteran leadership of Russell Wilson and his connection with George Pickens to generate big plays.

Najee Harris, playing like we’ve never seen before, is on pace for a career season. And despite injuries to key players, the offensive line has improved as the season progressed. This balanced approach has allowed the Steelers to maintain control in close games, a crucial factor in their playoff push.

The upcoming four-game stretch — all AFC North matchups — will define Pittsburgh’s season.

ESPN has no confidence in Steelers in playoff rankings

ESPN gives no credit to the improvements the Steelers made this offseason.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell went through each of the 14 NFL playoff teams and ranked this for the upcoming season. The Steelers Steelers snuck into the playoffs last season with a 10-7 record. This was despite finishing third in the conference.

This offseason Pittsburgh has gone to great lengths to improve the offensive side of the football with a completely new quarterback room led by Russell Wilson and two new offensive linemen.

Barnwell clearly doesn’t care about any of that. He ranked the Steelers as the worst of the 14 playoff teams from last season. Here’s what he had to say about it.

I know, I know. Don’t make the same mistake twice. Or three times. Or however many times the numbers say to count out the Steelers. Tomlin has managed to coax at least eight wins out of his team in every single season he has coached the franchise, a streak that has survived dismal quarterback play, injuries and woefully inept offensive playcallers. You know I’m about to get to the numbers, but the numbers shouldn’t apply to Pittsburgh.

Ranked ahead of the Steelers are all three other teams in the AFC North.

2020 NFL playoffs: Ben Roethlisberger has a message for his young receivers heading into wild-card game

What does the veteran QB have to say to his receivers as they head into the playoffs?

Sunday will be Ben Roethlisberger’s 10th season taking the Pittsburgh Steelers to the playoffs in his 17-year career. With a playoff record of 13-8, he’s thrown for 5,256 yards and 30 touchdowns.

JuJu Smith-Schuster, a then-rookie at the tender age of 21, was on the receiving end of exactly five of those yards in Pittsburgh’s one-and-done, 45-42 heartbreaker with the Jacksonville Jaguars back in 2018.

James Washington, Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool have exactly zero NFL playoff experience.

What does the veteran QB have to say to his young corp of receivers as they head into the playoffs? The message was simple: Don’t take it for granted.

“There are a lot of guys that don’t understand what it’s about. I get it,” said Roethlisberger in a Wednesday press conference. “You’re thinking I am young; I’ll get back. It’s not guaranteed. I think all of the veteran guys, as we are winding down our careers, understand we don’t know what is next — if there is going to be a next for some guys. We want to make the most of our opportunity, and we keep trying to tell those guys and emphasize to them how important this time is.”

Roethlisberger’s advice for all players is something he lives by.

“I think every player should approach this playoff game like it could be their last playoff game ever,” he said. “We’ve used examples of players and coaches who have been in this league for a long time that have never been in the postseason, never been to a Super Bowl, whatever it may be. I think it’s prudent for every player to take that mindset and approach. I know I am because nothing is guaranteed in the game or this world.”

Christmas wish list: 5 things we’d like to see for the Steelers

In the spirit of the holiday season, here are 5 things Steelers Wire is asking Santa for Pittsburgh heads into the remainder of the season.

With two weeks remaining, the NFL is about to wrap up its 2020 regular season with a big pretty bow. 14 teams will head into the postseason with visions of a Super Bowl dancing in their heads. One of those teams is our beloved Pittsburgh Steelers — playoff-bound for the first time since 2017.

In the spirit of the holiday season, here are five things Steelers Wire is asking Santa for Pittsburgh heads into the remainder of the season.

The Steelers (8-7) square-off against the Ravens (12-3), their AFC North rival, with their playoff hopes on the line. Baltimore won the first matchup of the season  in a 26-23 overtime thriller at Heinz Field back in Week 5 despite three interceptions from quarterback Lamar Jackson. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh has said that he will rest Jackson and a handful of other starters for Sunday’s contest which bodes well for Pittsburgh.

After back-to-back losses to the Bills and Jets, the road to the postseason became more difficult for the Steelers. Mason Rudolph started the contest and completed 14 of 20 passes for 129 yards and one touchdown, but left the game early with a shoulder injury. Devlin Hodges came on in relief and tossed two interceptions. Running back James Conner was held to 32 yards on the ground and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster had just two catches for 22 yards. The Steelers lack of offense (30th in total yards) has been a problem all year long. If they are able to defeat the Ravens on Sunday afternoon, coupled with a Titans loss to the Texans, Pittsburgh will be the sixth seed and play in a Wild Card game.

While Pittsburgh is fighting for its playoff life, Baltimore is resting easy as the No. 1 seed in the division and has a first-round bye. The Ravens beat the Browns 31-15 behind another spectacular performance from Lamar Jackson. Jackson totaled 238 yards and three touchdowns through the air and 103 yards on the ground. As a team, the Ravens had nearly 250 yards rushing. Mark Andrews led the team in receiving with six catches for 93 yards and two scores. Another former Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III will get the start for Baltimore, his first since Week 17 in 2016 when he was a member of the Browns.
