Steelers WR Diontae Johnson talks Browns: ‘They put it on us last year’

Halloween 2021 is the day the Steelers have been waiting for since January. Losing twice in 8 days to their vaunted rival Browns left a bad taste in their mouth.

Today is the day the Pittsburgh Steelers have been waiting for since January. Losing twice in eight days to their vaunted rival Cleveland Browns left a bad taste in their mouth.

The most devasting loss came in the wild-card round of the 2020 NFL playoffs. Pittsburgh logged 553 total yards to Cleveland’s 390 and kept the ball for more than half of the game. But fatal mistakes — including four interceptions thrown by Ben Roethlisberger — cut their playoff hopes short.

“They put it on us last year. We’ve got to come in with a chip on our shoulder and just bring it for real,” Johnson said in an interview with SiriusXM Blitz on NFL Radio.

“We know what happened to us last year. We know we should’ve won that game.”

Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson had a big day — his 117-yard performance remains a career-best.

Johnson said today’s brawl with the Browns is about taking care of business. “We’ve got to come into their house and take control on our side of the ball. We’ve got to play our role and not try to do too much.”

Despite the loss, Pittsburgh Steelers win big on injury front in Cleveland

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said there were only bumps and bruises in loss to Cleveland.

It didn’t matter if the Steelers won or lost today in Cleveland. What mattered is that they came out of the game without injury. And despite some hold-your-breath moments with wide receiver Chase Claypool and safety/linebacker Marcus Allen, Pittsburgh did just that.

In his postgame press conference, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that there were no significant injuries.

After an awkward tackle, Claypool exited the game briefly with an apparent foot injury but was back in the game on the following drive and scored a touchdown.

Allen appeared to injure his shoulder on a play early in the third, but he also returned the following drive.

The Steelers will host Cleveland next weekend in the Wild Card game.

Vote for the Steelers Week 13 player of the game

Cast your vote for the Steelers player of the game.

The Pittsburgh Steelers season stays alive after their win over the Cleveland Browns. Pittsburgh got payback for their Week 11 loss to the Browns and continue their miraculous run toward the playoffs. Which player stood out above the others in the win? That’s the question.

[polldaddy poll=10471286]

The easy vote here is for quarterback Devlin Hodges. He came in for Mason Rudolph and led the team with a poise and energy Rudolph couldn’t give. He might have only finished with 212 passing yards but quarterback wins matter in the big picture and Hodges won.

And when it comes to the defense there are so many names it’s hard to nail it to just one. Likebacks T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree are still on a tear this year. But Joe Haden’s interception ended the game.

Cast your vote and let us know who your player of the game is.

Steelers CB Joe Haden seals win over former team

Joe Haden stuck it to his old team on Sunday.

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joe Haden spent his first seven seasons with the Cleveland Browns. When Cleveland decided he wasn’t part of their plans, the Steelers didn’t hesitate to add him to their roster. All he’s done since is be the best cornerback on the roster for what is now his third season with Pittsburgh.

On Sunday, Haden got some payback on the team that didn’t want him when he picked off Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield to end any hope of a comeback by Cleveland. This season has been huge for Haden and he’s on pace for one of his best years as a pro.

Steelers players credit Mike Tomlin for saving the game with halftime adjustments

Mike Tomlin coached up the defense at halftime to slow down the Browns offense.

When Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin spoke to the media after his team’s win over the Cleveland Browns, he gave all credit for the 20-13 win to the players. He emphasized the importance of team and the effort of the guys.

But in the locker room, the players told a different story. According to ESPN reporter Dianna Russini, the players gave credit to Tomlin for his halftime adjustments. We especially saw this on defense after Pittsburgh struggled to slow down the Browns run game. Once the Steelers were able to get Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt under control, they could start going after Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Tomlin takes a lot of heat from a significant portion of the fanbase for his inability to scheme up games and make adjustments. But on Sunday we saw the best of Tomlin and that led to a win.

Steelers vs Browns: 3 takeaways from the big win

The Steelers found ways to generate points and win on Sunday.

Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

When the Steelers were 0-3 and even 1-4, it seemed like the playoff was a fairytale. But we fast forward to now and Pittsburgh sits at 7-5 coming off a huge win over the Cleveland Browns and their season still has life. This win was huge for the Steelers and we learned a little more about this team. Here are our three big takeaways.

Coaching matters

The Steelers coaching staff has historically taken a ton of criticism. And in many cases rightfully so. But the effort by this group to keep this team on track while dealing with more significant injuries than any team should. This is especially true of head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner should be applauded for their adjustments at halftime.

Mike Tomlin on Steelers effort: ‘Looking to strike a blow for team’

Mike Tomlin understands how important playing together is for this group.

Everyone on both sidelines knew how shorthanded the Pittsburgh Steelers were on Sunday. The Cleveland Browns went into the game hoping to sweep the season series and take advantage of Pittsburgh being without their top skill players. But as head coach Mike Tomlin talked about in the postgame press conference, it was team that carried the day in spite of the absences.

The day was carried by guys like Devlin Hodges, James Washington and Benny Snell Jr. instead of Ben Roethlisberger, JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Conner. But thanks to some impressive coaching and enormous effort but every Steeler on the field, Pittsburgh keeps their improbable comeback from an 0-3. Pittsburgh continues to win despite the lack of star power on offense but plenty of weapons on defense.

Next up for the Steelers is a long road trip to Arizona to take on the Cardinals. If the Steelers can keep winning in these final four games and make the playoffs it will be one of the rarest accomplishments in league history.

The Steelers finished it: Pittsburgh beats Browns 20-13

The Steelers defense came through again and Duck Hodges was just good enough.

The Pittsburgh Steelers waiting two weeks to get revenge for their Week 11 loss to the Cleveland Browns. And despite being a home underdog, the Steelers went out and got a statement win against the upstart Browns.

Pittsburgh turned to Devlin Hodges to take care of the football and keep the team in the game. And he did just that. Hodges finished with 212 passing yards, one passing touchdown and one interception. Hodges showed poise and played within the scheme, taking a few shots downfield with success.

The Steelers also got the run game going getting 105 total rushing yards from Benny Snell Jr., Kerrith Whyte and Jaylen Samuels. Among the receivers, it was James Washington who did all the heavy lifting. His four catches were good for 111 of Hodges’ 212 passing yards and his athletic touchdown catch at the end of the first half made all the difference.

On defense, Pittsburgh stepped up in big moments. It was once again the pass rush that came through as well as this group’s propensity for creating turnovers. The Steelers finished with five sacks and forced two turnovers including an interception by cornerback Joe Haden on his old team to seal the win.

The Steelers now sit at 7-5 after starting the season 1-4 and continue to control their own destiny as the No. 6 seed in the AFC.
