The Blues arrived at the NHL Winter Classic in beach gear and it was glorious

The Winter Classic more like the Summer Classic.

It’s going to be cold during the 2022 NHL Winter Classic in Minnesota. Likely historically so.

But do the St. Louis Blues care about such silly concepts as temperature and weather? Apparently not!

On Saturday, before puck drop at Target Field for the Winter Classic, the Blues arrived at the stadium wearing outfits that were more appropriate for a trip to the beach instead of the snowy, frigid climate of Minneapolis in winter. The Blues adorned themselves in baseball caps, sunglasses, swim trunks, polo shirts, and flip flops, uncaring of the minus-5 degree Fahrenheit temperature in which they were walking.

It’s a glorious sight to behold, if only for it’s absolute ridiculousness.

Look, I appreciate the commitment to the bit here from the Blues, but god that has to be cold. Thankfully, during the game St. Louis will be dressed more appropriately for skating around in such frosty weather.

The 2022 NHL Winter Classic in Minnesota could be the coldest outdoor game in league history

It’s gonna be a cold one in Minnesota.

It’s going to be cold in Minnesota this weekend for the 2022 NHL Winter Classic. Possibly historically so.

Despite all the game postponements across the league due to COVID-19, the NHL’s marquee annual outdoor event is still scheduled to take place on New Year’s Day in the evening between the Minnesota Wild and the St. Louis Blues at Target Field. Previously, Minnesota hosted a 2016 Stadium Series game at TCF Bank Stadium between the Wild and Chicago Blackhawks, but this will be the first time the city has hosted the Winter Classic in full.

And, as expected of Minnesota winters, it’s going to be frigid cold on Saturday. As of Thursday’s forecast, the high for New Year’s Day will be minus-3 Fahrenheit with a low of minus-9, potentially making the 2022 Winter Classic the coldest outdoor game in NHL history.

It’s going to be so cold in Minnesota that the league will have to heat the ice to keep the rink in optimal condition. Not only that, the benches and penalty boxes will be heated as well to keep players comfortable. As for the fans, of which a full house of nearly 40,000 are expected to attend, hand warmers will be provided, alongside additional heated areas in Target Field.

The frigid temperatures in Minnesota this weekend could very well eclipse the NHL’s coldest outdoor game on record, the 2003 Heritage Classic between the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens where temperatures dipped to zero degrees Fahrenheit.

Knowing local Minnesotans, however, Saturday’s game will be just another winter evening in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Avalanche broadcaster loses mind during Gabriel Landeskog’s playoff scrap vs. Brayden Schenn

“Right by Landeskog! Right by Landeskog!”

Playoff hockey breeds intensity, and the tempers were flaring early between the Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues in Game 1 of their first round series on Monday. During Monday’s game, just 10 minutes into the contest, Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog and Blues forward Brayden Schenn got into a headed fight that got Colorado fans on their feet.

It was a quick bout, with Landeskog getting the decisive victory over Schenn, but the real gem of this fight was the call from the Avalanche broadcast team and play-by-play announcer Marc Moser specifically.

Seriously, you need to hear the call on this one, and see the fight for yourself.

Moser calls this fight so quickly that it’s almost hard to keep up with what he was saying, but the intensity and passion in his voice turn what was an already great fight into a stellar one.

Schenn caught the ire of the Avalanche — and Landeskog especially — after the Blues forward collided with Mikko Rantanen in a knee-on-knee hit. Rantanen ended up being okay on the play, and assisted on Colorado’s tally in the first period, but the Avalanche were less than pleased about the incident.

What a scrap between Landeskog and Schenn, though, and what an incredible call to match its intensity to boot.

Mom of Blues’ Ryan O’Reilly donates kidney to arena manager who helped her children

The mother of St. Louis Blues’ star Ryan O’Reilly donated a kidney to an arena manager who used to give his sons ice time at all hours of the day and night.

There are still times humanity rules. And arguably the best and most wonderful story of 2021 has taken place in Canada.

The mother of St. Louis Blues star Ryan O’Reilly and former NHL player Cal, who currently with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL, gave. In a way, few can to those who give so much toward making athletes into pros.

On Wednesday, Bonnie O’Reilly donated one of her kidneys to Graham Nesbitt, who is 65 and managed the arena in their community, located an hour north of London,

Per CBC.ca:

Nesbitt would open the doors on snow days or after regular hours so scores of local kids could skate. The transplant surgery took place in London, and both Nesbitt and O’Reilly are recovering well.

“They’d call and say, ‘Is there any way we can get onto the ice before school?'” recalls Graham’s son, Joe Nesbitt. “He’d have the arena open at 6:30 a.m. so people could skate. He just wanted kids to be active and busy, not getting into trouble. It was his outlet as a kid and he wanted to pass it on.”

Nesbitt was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, also known as Berger’s disease, in 2011. Medication helped control the condition until 2019, when it became clear he’d need a kidney transplant.

Enter Bonnie O’Reilly, who was a match.

“She says that ‘What you’ve done for my boys, helping them achieve their goal of playing professional hockey, it’s the least we can do,'” Joe Nesbitt said, quoting O’Reilly. “My dad is just blown away by this.”

Watch: Colorado Avalanche stun St. Louis Blues with .1 left in regulation

Nazem Kadri scored with one-tenth of a second left as the Colorado Avalanche shocked the St. Louis Blues in a Stanley Cup qualifier.

Hockey is back. And it never was more apparent than Sunday when the Colorado Avalanche shocked the defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues in the first game of their best-of-five qualifier.

How about a goal by Nazem Kadri with .1 left in the third period for a 2-1 victory.

Watch:

The Blues had luck on their side in 2019 during their playoff run. They have to be hoping this isn’t indicative things have turned.

NHL Picks and Best Bets: 2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions

Looking at the NHL betting odds to win the 2019-20 Stanley Cup Final, with NHL futures picks and best bets.

The 2019-20 Stanley Cup will be up for grabs later this summer as the NHL season resumes with a 24-team playoff structure. The expanded postseason has opened up the odds, providing greater profit margins for sports bettors. Below, we’ll look at the Stanley Cup futures odds, and make our picks and best bets at BetMGM.

2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions Odds: Favorite

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list.
Odds last updated Thursday, May 28 at 2:40 p.m. ET.

St. Louis Blues (+1000)

The defending Stanley Cup champions finished the abbreviated regular season atop the ultra-competitive Central Division at 42-19-10 for 94 points through 71 games. They scored 225 goals and allowed just 193, all without star RW Vladimir Tarasenko (shoulder) for the majority of the season.

Tarasenko will return following the break and unlike most teams who try to defend a Stanley Cup title, the Blues are plenty rested after going the distance in 2018-19. The pressure has also faded, at least slightly, due to the prolonged break.

The Blues are only sixth by the odds to win the Cup despite finishing first in the Western Conference and receiving a Qualification Round bye. They’re a strong pick as the first team with odds of 10/1 or higher.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Blues to win the Stanley Cup returns a profit of $100.

2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions Odds: Contender

Edmonton Oilers (+2300)

The extended mid-season interruption will help level the competitive playing field for all 24 teams in the expanded playoffs. For this reason, it’s smart to trust the Oilers, who are led by C Connor McDavid and C Leon Draisaitl. Draisaitl and McDavid finished 1-2 in both points and assists in the regular season, and they’ll be able to take advantage of any team showing signs of rust defensively.

Believe in the raw talent of the Oilers’ two stars as they’ll look to outscore the competition in what’s sure to be a more wide-open playoff-style than to which we’re accustomed.

2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions Odds: Long shot

Florida Panthers (+6500)

Alternatively, look at the Panthers as your Stanley Cup dart throw. They ranked sixth in the Eastern Conference with 231 goals in the regular season while going 35-26-8. G Sergei Bobrovsky, a marquee free-agent addition, struggled through 50 games to post a .900 save percentage and a 3.23 goals against average.

The two-time Vezina Trophy winner is the biggest X-factor in this new playoff structure. The break has given him plenty of time to regroup and move past his regular-season struggles. If he can return to form, the Panthers could be vaulted into a long postseason run.

St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Blues at Blackhawks NHL matchup, with NHL betting odds, picks and best bets

The Chicago Blackhawks (31-29-8) host the defending champ and rival St. Louis Blues (40-18-10) at United Center at 7:30 p.m. ET Sunday (on NBCSN). We analyze the Blues-Blackhawks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Blues at Blackhawks: Projected starting goalies

Jake Allen vs. Malcolm Subban

Allen is 10-6-3 with a 2.31 goals-against average and .922 save percentage this season as the backup to Jordan Binnington. Allen posted a 38-save shutout in Chicago on Dec. 2, his only one of the season. Binnington has posted a 30-12-7 record with a 2.57 GAA and .911 SV% in 49 starts. He continues to do a tremendous job, as the defending champs look poised for another lengthy postseason run. While he is 2-0-0 against the Blackhawks this season, he also has a dismal 4.01 GAA and .846 SV% against them, so that’s why he’ll likely get a break.

Subban might get a shot after Corey Crawford was a bit shaky in his most recent outing. While it might be quite the tall order for what would be Subban’s first start with the team following his trade from Vegas, he did beat the Blues 6-5 in overtime Feb. 13. Crawford is 0-3-0 with a 4.77 GAA and .867 SV% in three starts against the Blues this season.

Prediction

Blues 5, Blackhawks 3

Moneyline (ML)

The BLUES (-139) are a good bet regardless of whether the Blackhawks (+115) give Crawford or Subban the nod. St. Louis has been getting the better goaltending overall this season. The Blues are also 8-1 in their past nine games overall and 7-1 in the past eight as a favorite. The favorite is also 5-1 in the past six meetings in this rivalry, too.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager for the Blues to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout would profit $7.20 if they do so.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

BLUES (-1.5, +185) is a nice small-unit play, as you can profit almost double your initial investment. While the home team is 6-1 in the past seven in this series and the Blues are 4-8-2 in their past 14 on the road, St. Louis is overall the better team with much more depth on offense and in the crease.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-150) is the best bet in this rivalry game, though the vig jumped from -110 to -150 from Sunday morning to afternoon. The Over is 7-3-1 in the past 11 battles in Chicago, and 15-6-5 in the previous 26 installments in this series. The Over is also 10-4-1 in the past 15 divisional games for St. Louis, while going 7-2 in the past nine for Chicago and 11-4 in the past 15 in which Chicago plays a team with a winning record.
