Former Duke basketball star Jeremy Roach makes game-winning buzzer-beater for Baylor

Former Duke basketball captain Jeremy Roach hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer for his new school on Thursday night.

[autotag]Jeremy Roach[/autotag] might not play at Cameron Indoor Stadium this season, but the fifth-year guard won over his new fanbase for good on Thursday night.

Roach transferred to Baylor this offseason, and he made a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to take down St. John’s in his fifth game with the Bears.

Red Storm forward Zuby Ejiofor stood at the free-throw line with a 98-96 lead and 4.1 seconds left in the second overtime period. Instead of essentially clinching the game, however, his attempt rattled off the front iron. Norchad Omier, another ACC transfer from Miami, came down with the rebound and passed it ahead to Roach, who pulled from the top of the key with less than a second on the clock.

This won’t surprise any Cameron Crazies who watched Roach make 42.9% of his triples last season, but the shot found its mark for the stunning victory.

Roach finished Thursday’s game with a season-high 20 points, including three triples on five attempts, along with three rebounds and four assists. He’s averaging 13.6 points and making 42.3% of his 3-point looks through five games with his new school.

Roach averaged 14.0 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game with the Blue Devils in 2023-24, adding up to an All-ACC Third Team selection. His 1,469 points in a Duke uniform rank 32nd in school history.

Undrafted St. John’s guard shines for Detroit Pistons in NBA Summer League

Daniss Jenkins dropped 26 points on six made three-pointers for the Detroit Pistons, a great Summer League showing for the St. John’s alumni.

The Detroit Pistons are well stocked at the guard position already, with Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Malik Beasley and Marcus Sasser all in the mix.

However, a new contender has emerged in Daniss Jenkins, an undrafted guard who played for Rick Pitino and St. John’s last season. Jenkins already signed a two-way contract, but his performance on Monday in Detroit’s first Summer League victory merits strong consideration for a standard roster spot.

Jenkins dropped 26 points on 8-16 shooting, including 6-11 from the three point line, along with four assists, three rebounds, two blocks, and one steal.

His red hot shooting put a ton of pressure on opposing defenses, and he used his craftiness to make plays for his teammates and get to the rim with ease – carving up the Rockets and making his case as the strongest undrafted member of the 2024 class.

The 6’3 guard was excellent for Pitino and the Red Storm as a senior in 2023-24, averaging 14.9 points, 5.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.6 steals while shooting 50% on twos, 35.4% from the three point line, and 85.1% on free throws.

Jenkins followed Pitino from Iona, where he averaged 15.6 points and shot 36.1% from three. Prior to that he spent two years in the WCC at Pacific, averaging 12.2 points as a sophomore in the COVID shortened 2020-21 campaign.

The Dallas native no doubt enjoyed taking down Houston on Monday, and more performances at or near this level should result in him getting a standard NBA contract and securing a spot in Detroit’s rotation when the NBA season gets underway in October.

Top transfer portal guard Kadary Richmond commits to Rick Pitino and St. John’s

Top transfer portal guard Kadary Richmond leaves Seton Hall and commits to Rick Pitino and St. John’s.

After one year at Syracuse and three years at Seton Hall, Brooklyn native Kadary Richmond will return to the Big Apple  – committing to join Rick Pitino and St. John’s for his final year of eligibility.

Richmond was widely considered the top available player in the transfer portal, coming off a season where he averaged 15.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 2.2 steals while shooting 46.8% on two pointers and 80.7% from the free throw line.

Richmond joins fellow newcomer Deivon Smith, a senior guard transfer from Utah, in what should be a very talented and new look backcourt for Pitino in his second season with the Red Storm.

While Smith and Richmond are both incredibly talented, physical guards, the trio of them and returnee RJ Luis lacks consistent outside shooting which could be an issue for Pitino’s team if they don’t find other floor spacers to put around them next season.

Richmond becomes the fourth intraconference transfer in the Big East over the past two seasons, a list that includes Nahiem Alleyne, Posh Alexander, and Dylan Addae-Wusu.

College Sports Wire lays out five potential landing spots for Duke transfer Jeremy Roach

The four-year Duke starter entered the transfer portal on Tuesday, meaning he could go anywhere for his final season. According to College Sports Wire’s Andy Patton, however, there are a few favorites.

Longtime Duke starter Jeremy Roach, a member of the Final Four run in 2022 and the Elite Eight run this past season, declared for the NBA draft on Tuesday.

However, he also retained eligibility and entered the transfer portal, and the consensus seems to be that he’ll exercise his last year of college basketball with another school. But where?

College Sports Wire’s Andy Patton released an article on Wednesday detailing the five most likely landing spots for the four-year Blue Devil.

Patton first cited an Adam Zagoria report that said St. John’s, Arkansas, and Kentucky were the top options for Roach. The College Sports Wire writer had St. John’s first on his list because of the departures of Nahiem Alleyne and Glenn Taylor Jr., saying head coach Rick Pitino could make waves with Roach’s commitment.

After the Razorbacks and Wildcats, listed second and third in order, Patton had Dan Hurley and the Connecticut Huskies as a fourth potential suitor. The two-time defending national champions will lose Tristen Newton, Stephon Castle, Donovan Clingan, and more this offseason.

“Roach is the perfect veteran for Hurley to bring into the mix, with his combination of floor spacing and lead guard facilitation a great first addition for the Huskies to build around,” Patton wrote.

Rather than a fifth college team, however, Patton said that the NBA could be a likely suitor for Roach. The College Sports Wire writer believes a good pre-draft process could make the pros a possibility.

“While his age and size may limit his prospects, if he performs well during workouts, he could get a promise from a team as a second-round pick or priority free agent signing,” Patton concluded.

Three schools in the lead for Jeremy Roach’s next home, per report

Jeremy Roach, who announced he would entered the transfer portal on Tuesday, is likely to end up in one of three places according to one report.

Four-year Duke veteran Jeremy Roach announced on Tuesday night that he’d declare for the NBA draft while retaining college eligibility, entering the transfer portal.

The move effectively ensured Roach won’t play in Durham next season, meaning Blue Devils fans will say goodbye to the last remaining player who started for Mike Krzyzewski. But where will the guard go next?

According to a Tuesday night report from basketball reporter Adam Zagoria, the three early favorites for Roach’s next destination are St. John’s, Kentucky, and Arkansas.

St. John’s is now coached by Rick Pitino, who led both Kentucky and Louisville in previous decades. The Red Storm finished with a 20-13 record last season, ranking 21st in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency metric (the highest of any team left out of the NCAA Tournament).

On the other hand, both Kentucky and Arkansas are going through coaching changes. Longtime Wildcats head coach John Calipari left for the Razorbacks at the conclusion of the season, and Kentucky brought in former BYU coach Mark Pope to replace him.

2025 NCAA basketball championship odds: Who is favored? Will UConn 3-peat?

Looking at the 2025 NCAA basketball championship odds as the 2023-24 season just wrapped up.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

It’s never too soon to think about next season.

While the UConn Huskies were finishing off the Purdue Boilermakers Monday in Glendale, Ariz, other programs — and players — have already set their focus on what it will take to get to the 2025 National Championship Game in San Antonio’s Alamodome next April 7.

Numerous players have entered the transfer portal, from FAU G Johnell Davis to Arizona C Oumar Ballo. Davis reportedly will test the waters and enter the NBA Draft.

Florida G Walter Clayton Jr., LSU G Jalen Cook and even USC G Bronny James are among a group who have declared or reportedly will declare for the upcoming draft.

Coaches are on the move, too. Sources have John Calipari leaving Kentucky for SEC rival Arkansas. He would replace Eric Musselman, who is headed to USC … which lost Andy Enfield to SMU.

So, who will win the championship next season?

St. John’s responds to Rick Pitino’s criticism, pulls off major upset over Creighton

Rick Pitino and St. John’s pulled off an upset victory over the Creighton Blue Jays on Sunday, could it put them into the NCAA Tournament?

After St. John’s 68-62 loss to Seton Hall last weekend, coach Rick Pitino lit into his players in a postgame press conference – repeatedly citing their lack of toughness and skill limitations while indicating this season has been the least fun he has had in a while.

Since then the Red Storm have picked up a pair of victories, first a five point win on the road at Georgetown followed by a massive 14 point home victory over the No. 15 ranked Creighton Blue Jays on Sunday.

Creighton, who upset UConn earlier this week, fell to 11-6 in Big East play and 20-8 overall while St. John’s moved to 8-9 and 16-12 overall.

The Red Storm were carried by transfer guards Daniss Jenkins (27 points, six assists) and Jordan Dingle (18 points). St. John’s only turned the ball over three times as a team, while they outrebounded the Blue Jays 42-35.

The win should sneak St. John’s back into the NCAA Tournament bubble conversation, although they will likely need a strong performance in the Big East Tournament to end up in the Big Dance.

But, with regular season games left at Butler, at DePaul, and home against Georgetown, Pitino’s team could carry some momentum into Madison Square Garden – and that could lead to said run, and ultimately a return for Pitino to the NCAA Tournament.

D1Baseball’s Top 25 keeps Duke at No. 12 in latest poll

Duke remains steady at No. 12 in latest D1Baseball poll.

Duke’s season got off to a picture-perfect start this past weekend as they went undefeated in the Baseball at the Beach tournament hosted by No. 25 Coastal Carolina.

Despite Duke’s 3-0 start to their season, even with a win over a top-25 Chanticleers team in their home stadium, D1Baseball didn’t move the Blue Devils up in their latest poll.

At the top, the class of the ACC remains Wake Forest as the Demon Deacons held steady as the No. 1 team in the country after dominating their first three games of the season. Arkansas moved up from third to second, and LSU moved up from fourth to third.

Florida dropped from second to fifth as the Gators lost their only game of the season to St. John’s. Their remaining weekend games were canceled due to inclement weather.

Another ACC foe for the Blue Devils, the Clemson Tigers, stays strong at No.10 after they swept Xavier behind some explosive offense. N.C. State remained at 13 despite a 2-1 weekend, while UNC remained at 15th after a perfect 3-0 weekend.

Duke will get a boost on its NCAA Tournament resume as their opening day opponent, Indiana, vaulted themselves into the Top 25 after a 2-1 showing in Conway, South Carolina. Their only loss was to the Blue Devils on Friday, but they bounced back and beat George Mason and Coastal to wrap up the weekend.

Duke will return to Durham to kick off a 10-game homestand. The first of those ten home games will come Wednesday as they host Liberty. Liberty started their season with a three-game sweep of Quinnipiac. The Flames were also selected to finish second in conference standings in its first season in the league by the head coaches in the 2024 CUSA Preseason Baseball Poll.

PHOTOS: Highlights from Florida baseball’s season-opening loss

Florida baseball got off to a rough start to the 2024 campaign on opening night, falling to the visiting St. John’s Red Storm.

Florida baseball got off to a rough start to the 2024 campaign on opening night, falling to the visiting St. John’s Red Storm, 9-5, inside Condron Family Ballpark on Friday in front of an opening day record crowd of 7,898 fans.

The visitors put seven runs on the board over the first three frames before the home team had a chance to plate a runner. By then, the game was well out of hand but the Gators fought valiantly during the middle innings, putting up five unanswered runs to cut the lead to two.

Unfortunately, the offense ran out of gas and the pitching staff coughed up another couple of runs, resulting in the final score.

Take a look below at highlights from Florida baseball’s opening night loss against St. John’s.

Alabama pitcher Evan Chaffee transferring to St. John’s

Alabama pitcher Evan Chaffee announced that he was transferring to St. John’s on Monday via his Twitter account. Chaffee spent just one season in Tuscaloosa.

As a new era begins in Tuscaloosa under newly-hired head coach Rob Vaughn, another one starts for former Alabama pitcher Evan Chaffee. The New York native announced that he was transferring to St. John’s on Monday via Twitter.

Coming out of high school, Chaffee was ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the state of New York by Prep Baseball Report. He was also ranked as the No. 7 left-handed pitcher in the country by Perfect Game USA.

His success at the high school level did not translate to the college level, however. Chaffee did not make an appearance on the mound for the Crimson Tide.

Following the conclusion of the season, Chaffee entered his name into the transfer portal.

Now, he will be joining a St. John’s squad that finished the season with a 28-25 record and failed to reach the Big East Tournament. It will be interesting to see how Chaffee fairs in the Big East for the Red Storm.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama baseball program and its involvement in the transfer portal.
