WATCH: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes daps up Lionel Messi after Sporting Kansas City loss

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes shared a moment with soccer superstar Lionel Messi after Sporting Kansas City’s loss to Inter Miami on Sunday.

For the first time in years, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ celebrity was rivaled at Arrowhead Stadium.

On Sunday night, soccer superstar Lionel Messi took the field for Inter Miami against Sporting Kansas City in an alternate venue contest that drew one of the biggest crowds in MLS history.

Mahomes was seen dapping up Messi after Sporting Kansas City’s loss, exchanging pleasantries with the Ballon d’Or winner in the locker room after the game.

Mahomes, who has proven to be an avid soccer fan, seemed at ease with Messi in the building. Despite Sporting’s 3-2 loss to Inter, no bad blood was brewed between the three-time Super Bowl MVP and Messi, who was clearly pleased to see that the Chiefs quarterback was in attendance.

Legendary meetings like this only happen once in a blue moon, and while Mahomes still has a way to go before equaling or surpassing Messi’s name recognition, this encounter is sure to have put him on the radar of many soccer fans around the world.

Oh no, Chicharito. No. No. No.

There are not many worse things than a failed Panenka

There is nothing worse than a failed Panenka.

The only thing worse, actually, is a failed Panenka deep into stoppage time of a tie game that your team really needs to win to reach the playoffs.

Javier “Chicharito” Hernández lived that nightmare on Sunday as the LA Galaxy drew Sporting Kansas City 2-2 at Dignity Health Sports Park.

To be fair to Chicharito, he did score the first two goals for the Galaxy on the night. And he has been on a tear lately, as his brace took him to seven goals in seven games.

But let’s return to that failed Panenka.

Just minutes after he scored a penalty to tie the game, Chicharito got another chance to win it from the spot and he … did not win it.

Oh no. No. No. No.

After the draw, the Galaxy sit in eighth place, three points behind seventh-place Portland in the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Galaxy do have two games in hand over the Timbers but, had Chicharito opted for a normal penalty at the end of Sunday’s game, they would probably also have two more points.

MLS Madness spreads nationwide as league breaks goalscoring record

MLS was, even by MLS standards, completely bonkers Saturday night

Summer in MLS can be a rough time. You’re too far away from the real pressure of making or missing the playoffs, it’s hot and humid everywhere, teams are figuring it out after transfer window moves. It can feel very much like everyone’s biding their time for September and October.

Not August 6. MLS Madness™ took hold in nearly every corner of the country, with goals galore, teams scoring and conceding in the deepest depths of stoppage time, big-name stars scoring bangers, and everyone basically went bananas. It was a perfect advertisement for the league: fun, flawed, weird, and inexplicable.

For one thing, MLS broke a league record for goals scored in one night. Across 13 games Saturday night, teams combined for 57 goals, an average of well over four per game. The old record of 46 was left in the dust.

As the league itself once said, This Stuff Kicks!

In chronological order, let’s go through one of the wildest nights in MLS history:

US Open Cup semifinal and final hosting scenarios revealed

Sacramento gets a home semifinal!

U.S. Soccer conducted the final draw for the 2022 U.S. Open Cup, revealing who would host July’s two semifinal games, as well as determining the hosting priority for the final in September.

Neutrals got one outcome they wanted, with USL Championship club Sacramento Republic FC ending up the host of the western side of the bracket’s semifinal. Sacramento will host Sporting Kansas City at Heart Health Park, a venue in which they’ve tasted defeat just once in 16 Open Cup games over the years.

Sacramento produced a stunning upset Tuesday night to earn their place in the semifinals, defeating the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Over in the east, the winner of the Orlando City vs. Nashville SC quarterfinal (which will take place in Florida on June 29) will host the other semifinal, with the New York Red Bulls heading to either Exploria Stadium or Geodis Park.

Both semifinals do not have announced dates or times, though U.S. Soccer has scheduled both to be played on either July 26 or July 27.

The good news for Sacramento turned sour in the draw for hosting priority in the final. The Republic were drawn into the lowest priority, meaning that no matter who wins in the east, Sacramento will have to head on the road. The Orlando/Nashville winner got top priority, with Sporting KC second and the Red Bulls in third.

The date and time of the final is not settled, with U.S. Soccer stating that the game could be played on September 6-7 or September 13-14.

Sporting KC credits Chiefs stars Mahomes and Kelce for Open Cup comeback

Sporting KC was down two goals when the crowd was given a jolt by Chiefs stars showing up on the big screen

Sporting Kansas City was down two goals in the second half of Tuesday’s U.S. Open Cup match against FC Dallas, but there were some secret weapons lurking in the crowd.

Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Mecole Hardman, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Marquez Valdes-Scantling were all in attendance and when the players were shown on the big screen, the entire shape of the match started to change.

Sporting KC suddenly burst into life, scoring two goals to tie the match and then adding two more in extra time to win 4-2 and advance to the Open Cup round of 16.

Was it a coincidence that the comeback started after the Chiefs stars’ presence was made clear? Maybe not.

Salloi wasn’t the only Sporting KC player who felt that way.

“It definitely helps that they were there,” forward Khiry Shelton told reporters after the game. “A lot of people don’t really know that they come to our games.

“The crowd started going crazy and then we’re on the field chatting to one another like let’s go, let’s go. It’s for us. This game is for us.”

Mahomes buys stake in Sporting KC

Mahomes, of course, is not just a Sporting KC fan. The superstar quarterback is also a part-owner of the MLS club, joining the ownership group last July.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to join Sporting Kansas City’s ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love,” Mahomes said at the time.

“Sporting is a community-oriented club and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City.”

WATCH: Chiefs players support Sporting KC in US Open Cup win over FC Dallas

A contingent of #Chiefs players was in attendance for Sporting KC’s epic comeback win over the FC Dallas in the US Open Cup.

Sporting Kansas City mounted a crazy comeback win over Clark Hunt’s club, FC Dallas, during the opening round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Tuesday, May 10.

Things were looking bleak for the boys in blue at halftime, down 2-0 with little going right during the first half. When they came back out for the second half, they played with an entirely renewed energy. One of Sporting KC’s players thinks they had a little help with that from some special guests in attendance.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, TE Travis Kelce, WR Mecole Hardman, RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire and WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling all showed up to support Sporting KC for US Open Cup. Mahomes, of course, joined the Sporting KC ownership group last July.

When Sporting KC striker Marinos Tzionis tied the game up with a brilliant goal in the 98th minute of the second half, the energy in the stadium was palpable. The reaction from Mahomes, Kelce and the rest of the Chiefs contingent was just as good too.

Sporting KC would go on to score two more points against FC Dallas during 10 minutes of extra time, advancing to the US Open Cup Round of 16. Sporting KC has won the US Open Cup four times, with their last title coming in 2017.

Given the energy that Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs’ players seemed to bring, perhaps they’ll look to attend the next matchup as well.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes joins Sporting KC ownership group

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is now a part-owner of two Kansas City major league sports franchises.

The starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs is now a part-owner of two major league sports franchises in Kansas City.

It’s nearly a year to the day that Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes became a part-owner of the Kansas City Royals. A year later, Mahomes has now become a part-owner of the Kansas City Major League Soccer franchise, Sporting KC.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to join Sporting Kansas City’s ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love,” Mahomes said, via a team press release. “Sporting is a community-oriented club and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City.”

“Patrick is a tremendous ambassador for Kansas City and we are delighted to welcome him to the Sporting Club ownership group,” said Cliff Illig, principal owner of Sporting KC, via team press release. “In addition to achieving excellence on the field, he is deeply committed to giving back to the community and elevating the sport of soccer. Patrick is also accustomed to cultivating a winning culture, and we look forward to contending for championships at Children’s Mercy Park well into the future.”

Mahomes’ soon-to-be wife, Brittany Matthews, also holds an ownership stake in the Kansas City NWSL franchise. That makes this the third Kansas City sports team that the Mahomes clan has in their portfolio. The star quarterback and his family continue to show unrivaled commitment to Kansas City, unlike that has ever been seen from a star player with the Chiefs.

The Chiefs already handed Mahomes a decade-long contract extension, but how long will it be before the team makes their star quarterback a part-owner of their franchise too? It only seems like a matter of time at this point.
