Video: Spike Carlyle walks off before end of round, gets punched from behind at UFC on ESPN 9

Protect yourself at all times.

[autotag]Spike Carlyle[/autotag] now knows the reason behind one of MMA’s most important rules: Protect yourself at all times.

“The Alpha Ginger” walked away from his opponent, [autotag]Billy Quarantillo[/autotag], before the bell signaled the end of their first round at UFC on ESPN 9 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

[lawrence-related id=522987,522983,523108]

Carlyle (9-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) had top position on Quarantillo (14-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and decided to get up and walk away with seconds remaining in the round. With the time still ticking, Quarantillo took the opportunity to get up and strike Carlyle as he walked away. The shot caught Carlyle by surprise and dropped him to the canvas just as the round came to an end.

The two continued to fight for two close, competitive rounds. The catchweight bout went to the judges’ scorecards, and Quarantillo took a unanimous decision.

The UFC is back in Las Vegas this week for the first time since March for the start of what could be many shows closed to fans at its own facility.

UFC on ESPN 9 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The event airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

[lawrence-related id=522599,522579]

In the main event, former welterweight champion [autotag]Tyron Woodley[/autotag] (19-4-1 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC) takes on contender [autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC). Woodley is the favorite in the fight at around -185, and he’s got a decent 9-5 edge in the picks from our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Blagoy Ivanov[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) meets [autotag]Augusto Sakai[/autotag] (14-1-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) in a heavyweight bout. It’s a pick’em fight with the oddsmakers, but a total blowout from our staff members, who are taking Ivanov at a heavy 12-2 clip.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Spike Carlyle[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) meets [autotag]Billy Quarantillo[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a 150-pound catchweight bout. Quarantillo is the slight favorite, but Carlyle has a slim 8-6 edge in our picks.

[autotag]Roosevelt Roberts[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) takes on [autotag]Brok Weaver[/autotag] (15-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a lightweight bout that has Roberts installed as a heavy favorite around -350. But in our staff picks, it’s a dead heat at 7-7.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Hannah Cifers[/autotag] (10-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) has a big challenger on her hands in [autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC), who is the biggest favorite at the event at more than 4-1. Only one of our pickers is taking the soft-spoken Cifers in an upset.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Woodley (60 percent), Ivanov (51 percent), Carlyle (57 percent), Roberts (62 percent) and Dern (86 percent) are the choices.

Spike Carlyle explains viral fight intro ritual, UFC debut giggle from deep inside ‘ginger soul’

Ahead of UFC on ESPN 9, Spike Carlyle explained his unusual pre-fight ritual, which went viral after his promotional debut.

Simply put, [autotag]Spike Carlyle[/autotag]’s debut stuck out.

In 85 seconds, Carlyle (9-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) derailed Aalon Cruz, winning by TKO in his UFC debut. At UFC on ESPN 9, Carlyle will look to make it two-for-two.

“I’m actually ecstatic,” Carlyle said during a virtual media day Thursday. “I’m happy to be at this moment. Everything is a unique experience right now, so I’m taking it all in.”

While Carlyle’s destructive performance turned heads, his persona and antics magnified his impression. UFC announcer Bruce Buffer introduced Carlyle for the first time. Meanwhile, Carlyle grimaced and made faces at the camera. As the last syllable left Buffer’s mouth, Carlyle let out a deep giggle. Almost instantly, the clip went viral on “MMA Twitter.”

“I always have somewhat of a ‘ritual,’ you could call it – a way when the announcers are bringing my name out,” Carlyle said. “The laugh was 110 percent genuine from someplace deep inside my ginger soul. Gingers have souls.”

While fans can expect the same level of bizarre upon his introduction Saturday, should they expect to hear another giggle? Maybe – but probably not, Carlyle indicated.

“I don’t think you can replicate that,” Carlyle said. “We’ll see what happens, man.”

https://www.facebook.com/ESPNMMA/videos/187946725869338/

A man of few words, Carlyle chose not to dive too deep into a pre-fight analysis of his matchup against Billy Quarantillo. Instead, he repeated the same word in a handful of answers.

“The one word I’ll give you guys for this fight is the ‘massacre.'”

UFC on ESPN 9 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The event airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

UFC on ESPN 9: Billy Quarantillo vs. Spike Carlyle odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 9 fight between Billy Quarantillo and Spike Carlyle, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

[jwplayer 4sSrvL2O]

Billy Quarantillo and Spike Carlyle hook up in a catch weight bout on the main card at UFC on ESPN 9 – also known as Fight Night 176 – at the UFC’s Apex Facility in Las Vegas. The card kicks off Saturday at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+.

Quarantillo and Carlyle step into the spotlight of the main card after Kevin Holland (shoulder) was forced to withdraw from his welterweight bout with Daniel Rodriguez. Gabriel Green will make his UFC debut in place of Holland, but the bout was moved to the prelims, while Quarantillo and Carlyle were shifted to the main card.

Quarantillo (13-2) doesn’t land quite as many punches as Carlyle (9-1), but when Quarantillo does land, he is accurate. He has an 81.38 significant strike-accuracy percentage to Carlyle’s 68.97, although the latter holds a 14.12 significant strikes landed per minute to 10.77 advantage. Still, those are very, very high numbers, and are mostly from the lower levels, as each fighter has just one fight under their respective belts at the UFC level.

Each of Quarantillo’s past five fights have finished inside the distance, including four via KO/TKO and a submission win in Round 2 against Jacob Kilburn in his UFC debut.

For Carlyle, each of his past three fights have all ended the same, a KO/TKO win. He knocked out Aalon Cruz after just 85 seconds in his UFC debut Feb. 29, 2020. On the flip side, Carlyle has never been knocked out in 10 career professional bouts, winning three times by KO/TKO, and he has never lost by submission, either, while winning three times on the mat.

Billy Quarantillo vs. Spike Carlyle betting odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday, May 28 at 7:10 a.m. ET.

QUARANTILLO (-152) is a moderate favorite in the newly-minted main card bout, while Carlyle (+125) enters as a short dog.

Both of these fighters will be looking to brawl early on, but they might tire themselves if they do not pace themselves. Based upon their histories at the lower levels, this one isn’t going to go the distance. The books agree as NO (-167): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is an even steeper price than the 2-way line on the fight. Still, a bet on NO is warranted, as it’s hard to envision this one as a boring fight with few fireworks.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Quarantillo (-152) to win returns a profit of $6.58. A $10 bet of No (-167) on the fight going the distance pays a $5.99 return.

Billy Quarantillo explains why he approved Spike Carlyle’s UFC on ESPN 9 catchweight request

Billy Quarantillo didn’t ask for a catchweight fight, but was willing to honor Spike Carlyle’s request.

[autotag]Billy Quarantillo[/autotag] wasn’t looking for a catchweight fight, but he’ll take it.

At UFC on ESPN 9 on Saturday, Quarantillo (13-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) takes on [autotag]Spike Carlyle[/autotag]. According to Quarantillo, the fight is taking place at 150 pounds at the request of Carlyle (9-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC).

With UFC president Dana White telling fighters he wasn’t interested in catchweight fights during the COVID-19 pandemic, Quarantillo was a bit surprised when the offer crossed his plate.

“After hearing Dana White saying they weren’t doing any catchweights, I made sure to keep my weight down,” Quarantillo told MMA Junkie on Monday. “They came back and said Spike was worried about making weight. They said, ‘You can either fight Spike at 155 or 150,’ or they’d look for someone else – but it’s slim pickings right now because of this whole pandemic. There’s not a lot of options. I said, ‘That’s fine.’

“I don’t want to give him too much of an advantage because it would have been a pretty normal cut for me to 145 because I stayed in really good shape. I said, ‘I’ll do it at 150. That’s fine. Make sure he’s comfortable. I want to take this fight.’ I don’t want him to be stressing over the weight cut too much, but I also don’t want him to have too much of a size advantage. I expect him to be a little bit bigger than me. That could be an advantage or a disadvantage. It was his idea to bump it up a little bit. I would’ve been fine with 145, but it is what it is. I didn’t want to miss out on fighting.”

[lawrence-related id=522143,522064,514748]

Both Quarantillo and Carlyle are coming off of dominant UFC debuts. In December, Quarantillo manhandled fellow UFC debutant Jacob Kilburn en route to a second-round submission. Two months later, Carlyle upset Aalon Cruz (a teammate of Quarantillo’s) with a first-round TKO.

“I did watch his first fight,” Quarantillo said. “He fought one of my teammates, Aalon Cruz. He’s a good fighter. At this level, everyone is really good. I think I’ve got what it takes to beat him. When he fought Aalon, I thought it’d be someone I’d be matched up with eventually.”

Fans can expect an exciting scrap on Saturday, predicted Quarantillo. Considering the stylistic matchup, Quarantillo envisions bonus money in his near future and is gunning for the finish.

“I know it’s going to be an exciting fight; I can tell,” Quarantillo said. “It’s going to be up there with ‘Fight of the Night.’ I know we can get that or ‘Performance of the Night.’ … We’ll see if taking this fight on shorter notice effects him or me more. I just know it’s going to be non-stop action. I’m looking for the kill every second of that fight. I don’t want to stay in there too long, so I’m looking for the finish. I’m looking to make a statement.”

UFC on ESPN 9 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The event airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

UFC adds Spike Carlyle vs. Billy Quarantillo, Casey Kenney vs. Louis Smolka to May 30 event

A pair of matchups in the UFC’s lower-weight divisions will join the May 30 lineup.

A pair of matchups in the UFC’s lower-weight divisions will join the May 30 lineup.

[autotag]Spike Carlyle[/autotag] (9-1 UFC, 1-0 UFC) will face [autotag]Billy Quarantillo[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a 150-pound catchweight bout, and [autotag]Casey Kenney[/autotag] (13-2-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) will take on [autotag]Louis Smolka[/autotag] (16-6 MMA, 7-6 UFC) in a bantamweight matchup.

MMA Junkie confirmed both bookings after initial reports from MMA DNA.

The UFC’s May 30 event, which does not have a name, is slated for the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, pending Nevada Athletic Commission approval on the resumption of combat sports. A meeting is set for May 27.

Carlyle made a successful UFC debut in February when he stopped Aalon Cruz in the first round. “The Alpha Ginger” is on a five-fight winning streak, with all but one of his pro wins coming by way of finish.

Former “The Ultimate Fighter” contestant Quarantillo got his second crack at the UFC when he stopped Kamuela Kirk in the third round at “Dana White’s Contender Series.” In his last outing, he submitted Jacob Kilburn for his sixth win in a row.

After winning his first two UFC fights, Casey saw his six-fight winning streak snapped at the hands of Merab Dvalishvili in February. He will look to rebound when he takes on veteran Smolka.

Since re-joining the UFC for his second stint in the promotion, Smolka returned to 135 pounds, going 2-1, with stoppage wins over Su Mudaerji and Ryan McDonald.

With the addition, the current May 30 lineup includes:

  • Gilbert Burns vs. Tyron Woodley
  • Hannah Cifers vs. Mackenzie Dern
  • Klidson Abreu vs. Jamahal Hill
  • Roosevelt Roberts vs. Brok Weaver
  • Tim Elliott vs. Brandon Royval
  • Katlyn Chookagian vs. Antonina Shevchenko
  • Chris Gutierrez vs. Vince Morales
  • Spike Carlyle vs. Billy Quarantillo
  • Casey Kenney vs. Louis Smolka

Rookie Report: Recapping the UFC’s five A-grade debutants in Q1 2020

MMA Junkie’s Simon Head takes a look back at the best rookie performers in the UFC so far in 2020.

Twenty-two fighters have made their UFC debuts so far in 2020, with 10 of them picking up victories to give their careers on the biggest stage a winning start.

Of those 10 winners, there were five newcomers who stood out as they delivered A-grade performances on their respective debuts. Here, we recap their displays as we look back at the best rookie performances of 2020 so far.

* * * *

Daniel Rodriguez

If there’s one thing UFC fans love to see, it’s a fighter who will step in the cage and throw down, even when it’s against someone who has built a winning reputation for doing the same.

That’s exactly what we saw from welterweight [autotag]Daniel Rodriguez[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN+ 25 in Rio Rancho, N.M., as he went toe-to-toe with Tim Means before eventually finishing “The Dirty Bird” via submission inside two rounds.

Despite facing such well-established, respected opposition, Rodriguez (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) showcased the sort of composure you’d expect to see from a 10-fight UFC veteran, as he outstruck Means, dropped him, and then submitted him with a standing guillotine to cap off an outstanding octagon debut.

What made his performance all the more impressive was the fact that Rodriguez had the deck stacked against him but still prevailed. He was facing a dangerous veteran, in Means’s home state of New Mexico, on just three weeks’ notice. That’s as tough an assignment as you could expect to receive in your UFC debut, yet Rodriguez passed with flying colors.

Next up: A submission specialist delivers a knockout performance.
