2023 Women’s World Cup: Switzerland vs. Spain odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Switzerland vs. Spain odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Switzerland takes on Spain in the Round of 16 Saturday. Kickoff from Eden Park is set for 1 a.m. ET (FS1) Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Switzerland vs. Spain odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Switzerland finished atop Group A with 5 points from 1 win and 2 draws and a +2 goal differential. It opened the group play with a 2-0 victory over the Philippines before notching 2 scoreless draws with New Zealand and Norway. This game should closely resemble its match with Norway, in which it had 49% possession and 8 shots. Switzerland, coming into the World Cup, placed as the 20th-best team per FIFA Women’s Ranking.

Spain entered ranked 6th and is among the favorites to win the tournament. It finished 2nd in Group C, finishing with 6 points via 2 wins and a loss. It opened with a 3-0 win over Costa Rica and a 5-0 victory over Zambia before being blanked 4-0 by Japan. It did end with 3 more shots than Japan and 77% possession, so from a technical perspective it was a fine performance outside of the final on the scoreboard.

Switzerland vs. Spain picks and predictions

Prediction

Spain 1, Switzerland 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

Many nations haven’t found it easy to score goals in the Women’s World Cup, and Switzerland is one of them, notching just 2 goals in 3 games.

That’s going to be problematic against Spain (-255), who scored 8. Spain might have been blown out in a game that didn’t impact if it would advance, but it is still the more technically sound and should be able to handle the pressure better.

Nonetheless, there’s no value in betting it to win outright. If anything, a Draw (+360) makes some sense considering the Swiss drew 2 top-30 nations, but I would pass here.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (-135).

There were 8 shots on goal against Switzerland throughout its Group Stage matches. That is mighty impressive defense and should serve as the key reason why Spain may be limited.

Despite Spain’s dominant efforts so far, it tallied all of its goals against Costa Rica and Zambia in one of the weaker groups. Against a nation that can possess like Switzerland, it may struggle to produce as many opportunities.

On the flip side, the Swiss had just 3 shots on goal against New Zealand and Norway combined. It should struggle to get quality chances as well.

Considering how both teams played in the group stage, take UNDER 2.5 (-135).

2023 Women’s World Cup: Japan vs. Spain odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Japan vs. Spain odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Japan (2 wins, 0 losses, 0 draws) battles Spain (2-0-0) in the Group C match Monday. Kickoff from Wellington Regional Stadium is set for 3 a.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Japan vs. Spain odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Group C has already been decided with both Spain and Japan advancing. Spain has a +8 goal differential while Japan has a +7 goal differential, so a draw would leave Spain as the top nation from the group.

Spain beat Costa Rica 3-0 on July 21. It then took down Zambia 5-0 on  Wednesday. Spain’s strength so far has been its defense, allowing just 2 shots on goal through 2 matches. It also has an unheard-of 68 shots through the 2 games. Spain is 6th in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.

Japan sits 11th and has been equally as impressive. It commenced its World Cup action with a 5-0 win over Zambia, limiting its opponent to 0 shots. Japan has 11 shots on target (25 in total). Against Costa Rica, it allowed 2 shots on target and had 12 itself.

Japan vs. Spain picks and predictions

Prediction

Spain 2, Japan 1

Moneyline (ML)

PASS. LEAN BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE (+115).

Both Japan and Spain have shown clinical finishing in opening 2 matches. Each scored at least 2 goals and while the competition should be stiffer for both sides here, the offensive efficiency should still be there.

Spain has looked several tiers above its opponent while Japan hasn’t looked as dominant, although still performing well. Pass on the Spain money and any other team-specific play.

Given the finishing we’ve seen from both nations, take BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE (+115).

Over/Under (O/U)

BET OVER 2.5 (+130).

Japan has a more formidable defense than Zambia or Costa Rice, but Spain has topped 20 shots in each match. It will be able to continue to pepper the goal Monday.

Spain had scored at least 2 goals in every match of 2023 (having played 8 leading up to the World Cup). It had scored 3 or more in 6 of those. Its offense has consistently dominated in 2023.

Japan also had 20+ shots in each match and has scored in 3 of its 4 matches leading up to the World Cup, scoring multiple goals in 3 of the 4 as well.

Considering the strength of both sides, take OVER 2.5 (+130).

2023 Women’s World Cup: Spain vs. Zambia odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Spain vs. Zambia odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Spain (1-0-0 / W-D-L) takes on Zambia (0-0-1) Wednesday as Group C play continues. Kickoff from Eden Park is at 3:30 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Spain vs. Zambia odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

The results in the opening games for both these teams were not surprising. Zambia was +775 to beat Japan and lost 5-0. Spain was -10000 against Costa Rica and won 3-0. But sometimes it’s how you play that matters.

Zambia made its World Cup debut against Japan Saturday and was overpowered by the 2015 runner-up. It wasn’t immediate though as Japan only led 1-0 at halftime on a goal from M Hinata Miyazawa in the 43rd minute.

Japan’s defense prevented the African nation from any offensive success. Zambia failed to take a shot on goal, or any shot close to the goal, even with its lone corner kick.

Spain’s 3-0 win against Costa Rica, while impressive, was still much lower than what its stats show. Spain took 22 corner kicks and 46 shots against Costa Rica (12 on goal). It held the ball 80% of the time, while Costa Rica failed to take a single shot on goal.

Despite all that, Spain only scored twice, on goals by M Aitana Bonmati and F Esther Gonzalez — 1 of Spain’s goals was a Costa Rica own goal.

Spain is No. 6 in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings; Zambia checks in at No. 77.

  • Over/Under: 4.5 (O: -135 | U: -105)

Spain vs. Zambia picks and predictions

Prediction

Spain 5, Zambia 0

Moneyline (ML)

Like its 1st match, Spain (-15000) is heavily favored. The moneyline odds are so high, you have to PASS and look to other options.

From the last game, Spain shook off a lot of its pre-World Cup drama and showed how dominant it can be. But despite the one-sided match with Costa Rica, it took Spain until the 23rd minute to score.

Zambia has problems with its defense, but held Japan scoreless until right before the 1st half ended. So far in this tournament, it’s taking teams a fair amount of time to score. Of the 1st 32 goals scored, only 8 have come before the 45-minute mark. Teams are averaging 42 minutes per goal.

BET DRAW AT 30 MINUTES (+195).

Over/Under (O/U)

Only 2 of the 1st 12 matches played have gone Over 4 goals, but there are a few reasons to like the Over here. First, Zambia’s loss to Japan was 1 of those Over results. Second, Zambian GK Catherine Musonda was given a red card late in that game, disqualifying her from playing against Spain.

Zambia won’t be playing their 2nd-stringer because Musonda was the backup. Hazel Nali was the starter, but had to bow out days before the World Cup began with a knee injury. If the backup allowed 5 goals it may be impossible to keep this game close. Spain had 12 shots on goal in the 1st game.

BET OVER 4.5 (-135).

2023 Women’s World Cup: Spain vs. Costa Rica odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Spain vs. Costa Rica odds and lines, with Women’s World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Spain and Costa Rica face off Friday to open Group C play. Kickoff from Wellington Regional Stadium is at 3:30 a.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Spain vs. Costa Rica odds, and make our best Women’s World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Group C’s opener from Wellington, New Zealand, is not expected to change the narrative of both these teams. Spain is the favorite at -440 to win the group. The No. 6 team in the FIFA rankings and has the 2nd-shortest odds at +500 to win it all. No. 1 U.S. (+220) is the favorite, while England (+550), Germany (+700) and Australia (+850) are the only other teams with less than +1000 odds to win the Cup.

Spain’s national team has dominated recently, shutting out opponents in its last 4 matches, most recently routing Vietnam 9-0 July 13.

Costa Rica enters on a 4-game losing streak, scoring just once and suffering 3 shutouts. Costa Rica will likely be elated to score a few points in the group stage after missing the 2019 World Cup. At +10000, Costa Rica has the longest odds to win Group C — even though Zambia (+4900 to win Group C) is ranked lower in the FIFA rankings at 77, while Costa Rica is No. 36. Eleventh-ranked Japan (+400) has the 2nd-shortest odds to win the group.

That doesn’t mean Spain doesn’t have issues. The cohesion of this squad is not in a good place as several members walked away from the team to protest the coach Jorge Vilda’s style and decisions. Despite the unhappiness in the locker room, he will still coach Spain in the tournament.

  • Over/Under: 4.5 (O: -152 | U: +120)

Spain vs. Costa Rica picks and predictions

Prediction

Spain 3, Costa Rica 1

Moneyline (ML)

Spain (-10000) should win this game with ease, but the betting market makes that obvious call a bit worthless. I would never recommend a -10000 bet.

There are other bets to consider. A SAME GAME PARLAY OF SPAIN TO WIN AND BOTH TEAMS SCORE (+304) is an enticing option.

Spain is missing a few key players, including D Mapi Leon and MF Patri Guijarro — both disgruntled with the Royal Spanish Football Foundation. Their absence will hinder the defense, albeit slightly, which could open up a chance for Costa Rica to score.

Over/Under (O/U)

The moneyline odds on point toward a high-scoring match — mainly by Spain, but to put it in context, scoring in the Women’s World Cup in 2019 was nowhere close to this line.

Only 6 of the 36 group stage matches in 2019 exceeded the 4.5-goal total. Two of those came against lowly Jamaica and one was a 13-0 U.S. beatdown of Thailand.

BET UNDER 4.5 (+120).

UEFA Nations League: Croatia vs. Spain odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Croatia vs. Spain UEFA Nations League final odds and lines, with expert soccer picks, predictions and best bets.

Croatia battles Spain in the UEFA Nations League final on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2:45 p.m. ET from De Kuip in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Below, we preview BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Croatia vs. Spain odds, and make our best soccer bets, picks and predictions.

Croatia took down the Netherlands 4-2 in extra time Wednesday to advance to the final. It is one of the best teams in Europe and proved that during the World Cup, reaching the semifinals and losing 3-0 to Argentina, which won  the tournament. Croatia was 4-1-1 in Nations League group stage play and is led by long-time captain M Luka Modric.

Spain took down Italy 2-1 in full time, more than doubling the Italian’s shots on goal (7-3). It didn’t quite perform up to pair in the World Cup, making the knockout stage but losing to Morocco in the first round. It went 3-1-2 (2 draws) in group stage play. M Gavi, M Rodri and F Alvaro Morata will be the names to keep an eye on for the Spanish side.

Croatia vs. Spain picks and predictions

Prediction

Spain 1, Croatia 0

Moneyline (ML)

LEAN SPAIN (+105).

Spain’s talent is just a level above Croatia’s. Gavi plays for Barcelona and Rodri is on Manchester City, both clubs that won their respective league. Spain had a dominant performance against Italy as well, possessing the ball for 62% of the match.

While Croatia won, it didn’t quite have that convincing performance. Also, Modric is 37 years old and will eventually start to slow down, likely being given all the minutes he can handle for the 2nd time in 5 days.

With the value here, take SPAIN (+105).

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (-145).

While I don’t see Croatia coming out on top, what it has consistently done well and why it performed well in the World Cup is that it forces its opponent to play at its pace. Expect that on Sunday.

Croatia has gone Under this total in 3 of 4 games in 2023 and went under in 4 of the 7 World Cup matches is was part of. It also had 54% of the possession against the Netherlands. It should slow the pace down.

Also, while Morata should get the start up top for Spain, he hasn’t produced well lately, tallying just 13 goals in 36 matches for Atletico Madrid. Put it all together and take the UNDER 2.5 (-145).

Spain vs. Italy odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Spain vs. Italy odds and lines, with expert Nations League picks, predictions and best bets.

Spain battles Italy in the UEFA Nations League semifinal Thursday. Kickoff from De Grolsch Veste in Enschede, Netherlands, is set for 2:45 p.m. ET. Below, we preview BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Spain vs. Italy odds, and make our best soccer bets, picks and predictions.

The winner of this battle will face Croatia, which beat the Netherlands 4-2 Wednesday in the other semifinal, on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. ET.

Spain beat Portugal 1-0 to make the Nations League final 4. It went 2-0-2 (2 draws) in the group stage matches. Between these 2 sets of matches was the World Cup, in which it was bounced by Morocco in penalty kicks. Spain will likely be led by F Alvaro Morata with Barcelona star M Gavi also in the mix.

Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup, but made these semifinals on the back of a 2-0 win over Hungary. It also took down England 1-0. Italy was 1-1-2 in the group stage matches for the Nations League. It will likely be led in the attack by Tigre F Mateo Retegui. M Marco Verratti and M Jorginho will make up the crux of the Italian roster.

Spain vs. Italy picks and predictions

Prediction

Spain 2, Italy 1

Moneyline (ML)

BET SPAIN (+125).

Of course, the favorite is the easy route to take here, but the talent is just unmatched. The combination of Gavi and M Rodri along with D Carvajal should present quite a challenge for Italy.

Also, Spain was far better in the group stage and also faired well at the World Cup. The new wave of Italian football hasn’t quite proven itself and took down a Hungary side to reach this point.

With a 5-2 defeat to Germany in the group stage, Italy may struggle against a technically sound Spanish side. Back SPAIN (+125).

Over/Under (O/U)

LEAN OVER 2.5 (+125).

Italy scored in both of its previous matches in the UEFA Champions League and has been held scoreless in just 1 of 6 games. It allowed 7 goals in 4 group stage matches though. Both teams have terrific midfield players which should help transition into opportunities as well.

Spain went Over this total in 2 of 4 World Cup matches and in 1 of 2 of the September Nations League matches. The firepower is there, and for a small unit, play the OVER 2.5 (+125).

2022 World Cup: Morocco vs. Spain odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Morocco vs. Spain odds and lines, with World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Spain battles Morocco in the Round of 16 Tuesday with kickoff from Education City Stadium set for 10 a.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Morocco vs. Spain odds, and make our best World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Spain finished 2nd in Group E group stage play. They kicked off their World Cup play with a  7-0 win over Costa Rica, then drew Germany 1-1 and lost to Japan 2-1.

Spain’s main attacker is F Alvaro Morata, but their real strength is in the midfield with M Sergio Busquets and M Gavi bringing both experience and energy to this technically-sound lineup.

Spain ranks 7th in the world per FIFA while Morocco sits 22nd.

Morocco won Group F behind 2 wins and a draw. They beat Belgium 2-0 and Canada 2-1 after drawing their first match of the tournament against Croatia 0-0. There main star is PSG D Achraf Hakimi, who was actually born in Madrid, Spain.

Moneyline (ML)

BET MOROCCO OR TIE (+120).

Belgium was a disappointment in group stage play, but Morocco beating them 2-0 almost seems as impressive as Spain thrashing a low-tier CONCACAF side.

Morocco has an underrated amount of high-level competitors with F Hakim Ziyech having 19 goals in 46 caps. Morocco’s strength is in their defenders with Hakimi leading the way.

They have allowed just 1 goal this tournament, and with Spain having adjusted their lineup several times to figure out what works, the technical side will be there but the chemistry may not be.

Spain had a draw and loss against the best 2 teams in their group while Morocco beat the 2nd-best team in the world and then drew the 12th. Morocco has proven enough to bet on them either winning in 90 or heading past full time.

Over/Under (O/U)

LEAN UNDER 2.5 (-145).

Morocco has been outstanding defensively, but they also haven’t been great offensively. Morocco scored 2 against Belgium and Canada but failed to tally a goal against Croatia. In their last 2 games, Morocco has 4 goals but just 6 shots on target.

Capitalizing on that rate against Spain won’t be as easy. Outside of their 7-goal performance, Spain has scored just 1 goal per game. They had just 8 shots on target in their last 2 games.

Considering neither side has been a high-pace side with Spain’s technical dominance likely killing the clock, this should be a low-scoring battle. At this value, the UNDER 2.5 (-145) is just a lean.

2022 World Cup: Spain vs. Germany odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Spain vs. Germany odds and lines, with World Cup soccer expert picks, predictions and best bets.

Germany (0 wins, 1 loss, 0 draws) battles Spain (1-0-0) Sunday in a Group E  group stage match. Kickoff from Al Bayt Stadium is set for 2 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Spain vs. Germany odds, and make our best World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Spain crushed Costa Rica in 1 of the more impressive 1st game displays. The No. 7 team in FIFA’s world rankings scored 7 goals on 8 shots on target while controlling possession for 82% of the time and holding Costa Rica without a single shot.

F Ferran Torres was the only player for Spain to score multiple times as 6 players managed to find the back of the net. The Spanish experience and poise looked better than ever.

Germany didn’t have similar success. FIFA’s No. 11-ranked team is considered one of the best teams in the tournament, but it lost 2-1 to Japan in their 1st game and now have their backs against the wall.

Germany had more than double the shots as Japan (26-12) and had 5 more shots on target (9-4). However, the only German goal was a penalty kick from M Ilkay Gundogan.

Spain 1, Germany 1

Moneyline (ML)

LEAN DRAW (+275).

Most of the action here should come on Spain and rightfully so. While Germany didn’t struggle in their opener, they did lose. They had 74% of possession and more than double the shots and shots on goal.

With GK Manuel Neuer and an extremely talented midfield, Germany should be able to limit Spain. Germany must get a result to stay in the tournament.

Spain is talented and has an equally impressive midfield, but considering what Germany needs and the passion they should be playing with, expect their side to push for any points.

I think they’ll get something here, and the Draw (+275) is the best money line value.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (+115).

The midfield is the strength for both sides as Spain has experience and poise in M Sergio Busquets. M Gavi, at 18 years old, is also a budding star. Expect his touch to help Spain.

While both teams did get 15-plus shots in their 1st game, the defense, and more specifically the goal keepers, should be of much higher class and help limit the goals.

Leading into the tournament, Spain’s only real competition in 2022 was a pair of matches against Portugal and Switzerland in which those games would have been 1-3 O/U.

This should be an intense game with quality touches and solid defending. I would back the Under 2.5 (+115) here.

Spain will battle Costa Rica in Wednesday’s 2nd match of Group E group stage play with kickoff at Al Thumama Stadium set for 11 a.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Spain vs. Costa Rica odds, and make our best World Cup bets, picks and predictions.

Spain is another big name in this competition, typically a breeding ground for talent and strong players. The No. 7-ranked team by FIFA is walking with their heads high having a strong 2022 season with a 6-1-2 mark. Those wins include Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.

Spain has a phenomenal lineup with names such as: D Cesar Azpilicueta, D Jordi Alba, M Pedri, M Sergio Busquets, F Ansu Fati, F Fernan Torres. This is a young squad overall, but full of pace and talent. Spain’s defense will be their strongest point with Chelsea captain Azpilicueta leading the way.

Costa Rica, No. 31 in FIFA’s ranings, is 8-1-1 in 2022 with wins over the USA, Canada, and Honduras. GK Keylor Navas is one of the best keepers in the tournament, a very seasoned keeper playing 13 seasons in his career.

One of their more talented players, M Johan Vengas has 11 goals in 82 caps. F Anthony Contreras has 2 goals in 9 matches played as well. This team has proven their ability to put the ball in the back of the net, especially against a quality opponent.

Prediction

Spain 2, Costa Rica 0

Moneyline (ML)

PASS.

Spain has a stronger lineup with younger talent that plays well together and plays with a lot of pace behind them.

The midfield duo of M Sergio Busquets, who ages like fine wine in the football world, and the youngster M Pedri, will be something special to watch.  Someone that I believe to be the underdog of the team is F Ansu Fati. He was a star for Barcelona until he suffered several injuries that kept him out for a year.

Ultimately, there just isn’t value in backing Costa Rica or a draw and certainly no value on the (-650) Spain moneyline.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 2.5 (+130).

With the defense of Spain and the weaker attack of Costa Rica, I see it being a struggle for Costa Rica to score. Spain is young and fast, but their lack of tournament experience in the front 3 may pose problems for them to score as well.

What Spain lacks for in experience in their front attackers, they will make up for with Busquets in the midfield, plus their back 4 defenders. Pedri and M Gavi are also a midfield duo at FC Barcelona, so have great chemistry. That should aid them in dominating possession and the game but necessarily pressing to crush Costa Rica.

Back the Under 2.5 (+130). While both teams have talent in the attack, I believe this will overall be a defensive battle.

Summer Olympics Men’s Soccer: Brazil vs. Spain odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Brazil vs. Spain odds and lines, with Summer Olympics Men’s Soccer picks, tips and best bets.

Neither Brazil or Spain brought their best squad to the Summer Olympics amid a busy summer of international soccer, but they’ll play for the gold medal Saturday. Kickoff will be at 7:30 a.m. ET at International Stadium Yokohama. Below, we preview the Brazil vs. Spain odds and lines, and make our best Summer Olympics bets, picks and predictions.

Spain topped host nation Japan 1-0 in the semifinals while Brazil had to go to penalty kicks with Mexico where it won 4-1.

The Spaniards handed Ivory Coast a more decisive 5-2 loss in the quarterfinals after winning Group C at just 1-0-2. Spain outscored the competition 2-1 in the Group Stage. Brazil won Group D at a more convincing 2-0-1 and outscored the rest of the group 7-3.

Brazil entered the Olympics third in the FIFA world rankings and Spain sixth; however, those rankings were not updated since the end of the Euro 2020 and Copa America tournaments.

Prediction

Brazil 2, Spain 0

Money line (ML)

Back the much higher-scoring BRAZIL (+165) for a win within 90 minutes and stoppage time.

Spain opened the tournament with a 0-0 draw against Egypt, crept past Australia 1-0 and drew Argentina 1-1 before erupting for 5 goals against Ivory Coast in the quarters. The offense was short-lived as it topped Japan just 1-0.

Brazil has been much more proficient at the offensive end. It doubled up Germany 4-2, drew Ivory Coast 0-0 and responded with a 3-1 win over Saudi Arabia to close the Group Stage.

Mexico, who Brazil beat in the semifinals, is by far the best team either side played in the knockout stage. That tough tuneup will be an advantage for Brazil in the medal game.

Over/Under (O/U)

There are two possible plays on the total with neither being ideal but OVER 1.5 (-170) offers better value than Under 2.5 (-220).

Scoring dried up for both teams in the semifinals but Brazil has shown an ability to find the back of the net in this tournament. It’ll get some revenge and take care of the Over after losing the Copa America final 1-0 to Argentina.
