The Golden Eagles are led by QB Billy Wiles, who has 421 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season. Southern Miss has yet to open conference play in the Sun Belt as it continues its quest to build on a 7-6 season last year.

Tulane, which plays in the American Athletic Conference, also failed to build on a season-opening victory by losing in Week 2. Against the spread

BET TULANE -13 (-110).

The Green Wave came up short last week, but they had a 17-10 lead at half and were tied going into the 4th quarter against a ranked opponent. While Horton didn’t have a great game, he showed he can competently fill in for Pratt. Tulane went 5-0 ATS on the road last year and was one of just 4 teams to have 4-plus road games last season and cover all of them.

Southern Miss was exposed against FSU, and while Florida State is superior to Tulane, the Golden Eagles have too many holes defensively to limit the Green Wave. They allowed 3 Seminoles to average more than 10 yards per carry in the loss — Tulane’s offense should erupt and cover here.

Back TULANE -13 (-110).

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 49.5 (-110).

Southern Miss has opened the season 2-0 to the Over but its offense was limited to 13 points against a quality opponent, which Tulane is. The Green Wave limited Ole Miss to 10 points in the first and South Alabama to 17 for the whole game. They should be able to hold Southern Miss to 20 or fewer points.

Tulane, without Pratt, scored just 20 on Ole Miss. With Pratt’s status up in the air, taking fewer points is the safer wager here. If Pratt plays — and it might be smart to wait here until that is decided — I would ultimately pass as he’s a game-changing threat for the Green Wave.

This game, despite the records being close, is a mismatch. Rice is down to its 4th-string QB and Southern Miss (-260) and RB Frank Gore Jr. will be able to move the ball easily against this team while limiting the offense. However, the price tag in this one is not worth the wager.

Against the spread

BET SOUTHERN MISS -6.5 (-110).

This is an easy call. Rice comes in as losers of 4 straight games and with a 4th string QB under center. I would barely trust an Alabama 4th String QB let alone one from Rice. The Golden Eagles will win and win big — SOUTHERN MISS -6.5 (-110) is my favorite play in this game.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 45.5 (-113).

Southern Miss can score a bit, but can Rice? This is the reason I am looking Under 45.5 in this game. Rice has been destroyed by injury and I do not see it being able to move the ball well.

The Owls could get to double-digit points — but not much more. I think this will be a game of coasting for the Golden Eagles. If they want to get to 40, they can, but I think they will get to the mid 20s and cruise which makes me lean UNDER 45.5 (-113).

The Golden Eagles haven’t had a lot of success through three games, only besting FCS Grambling 37-0 Sept. 11. USM lost its opener to South Alabama 31-7 Sept. 4 and was dumped 21-9 by Troy last weekend. The Under has cashed in all three outings.

The Crimson Tide passed its first true test last week at Florida, hanging on for a 31-29 win. The Tide have scored at least 31 points in all three of their games, but they’re just 1-2 ATS while hitting the Over twice.

Against the spread

SOUTHERN MISS +44.5 (-120) is the play. While Alabama throttled Miami in its opener, the Tide have managed to cover just once in three outings.

This game will follow a similar path of the Mercer game for the Tide. Alabama will fly out to a big lead, then take its foot off the gas. The Golden Eagles won’t do a lot, but they’ll do enough to grab a cover.

Over/Under

UNDER 58.5 (-112) is the lean, mainly because of USM’s struggles on offense. It will be quite the feat if it can get more than 10 points against the top-ranked team in the nation.

Alabama will roll up big points in the first half, and the Under will look to be in danger. However, expect ‘Bama to call off the dogs and turn it over to the reserves for a good chunk of the second half, resting up in this final tune-up before the conference battles begin.

FAU at Southern Miss: Three things to know

The Owls hit the road for the second straight week. They stepped out of conference and were dumped 20-3 at Georgia Southern last week, struggling against the triple-option offense. The defense was stout as usual, as the Owls have allowed 20 or fewer points in every game this season.
FAU’s defense allows just 299.6 total yards per game to check-in sixth in the country while ranking eighth in passing yards allowed per game (170.9). The Owls are also third overall in the nation with just 12.4 PPG allowed through seven outings.
Southern Miss lost 32-21 in the opener against South Alabama, and head coach Jay Hopson resigned after just one game. Scotty Walden took over, but he left to be the head coach at FCS Austin Peay, who will compete in the spring. So, defensive coordinator Tim Billings has been handling the head coaching duties.

Money line (ML)

FAU (-304) is a better team overall, and it has the coaching stability. Southern Miss (+240) is having a rare down year. With FAU’s struggling offense, posting just 18.4 points per game, you cannot risk three times your potential return. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

FAU -8.5 (-110) is a fairly risky play, as the Owls have struggled on offense, as mentioned above. The seven-loss Golden Eagles will have a hard time moving the ball on the Owls and their sturdy defense. FAU covered the spread in its only road game as a favorite of a touchdown or more, topping rival FIU 38-19 Nov. 13. It was easily its best scoring performance of the season but another breakout here wouldn’t be shocking.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 42.5 (+100) is always risky in this day and age of offense, but FAU is a throwback. The Owls do not score much on offense, and their defense is stout. USM is averaging just 14.3 PPG across its past four games, and a visit from the Owls is not what the Eagles need to get going.
