Southern Miss vs Middle Tennessee Game Preview

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The defense hasn’t been all that bad.

It’s not the rock it needs to be – especially against the run – but it’s not the overall problem. It hasn’t allowed more than 400 yards in six of the seven games – Alabama is the only team to go off – and it should be good enough to keep the Middle Tennessee attack from taking over the game.

The Blue Raiders don’t do much on the ground and the O overall averages 350 yards per game. The Golden Eagle defensive front should make things happen behind the line, but …

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

Yeah, the Southern Miss offense. It’s a problem.

The running game would be the statistically worst in America by far if it didn’t go off against Grambling. It hasn’t hit 100 yards in any of the last five games, and the passing game isn’t steady enough to pick up the slack.

Southern Miss came up with a grand total of 107 yards of total offense in the loss to UAB two weeks ago.

Middle Tennessee leads the nation in turnover margin, the defensive front will live in the Southern Miss backfield, and …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to take much for the Blue Raiders to take over, and they’ll do it on the ground.

They’d like to be balanced, but the Southern Miss run defense has been a problem over the last month allowing over 200 yards in three of the last four games. It’ll be a third win in the last four games for a surging Middle Tennessee team that stays alive in the chase for a bowl bid.

UAB vs Southern Miss Game Preview

Why UAB Will Win

Be surprised if Southern Miss runs the ball more than two feet.

The Golden Eagles are starting to find a passing game, but the offensive front hasn’t generated a lick of a push for the ground attack over the last month, failing to get to 100 yards in any of the last four games and averaging just 2.5 yards per carry.

Throw in the lack of third down conversion, a whole slew of turnovers, and a line that leads the nation in most tackles for loss allowed, and UAB should be able to take advantage of both things, especially with the takeaways.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The UAB hasn’t seen a penalty it hasn’t liked to commit.

The Blazers are averaging close to ten flags a game – with ten or more in four of the six games – for a whopping 91 yards an outing. Southern Miss gets hit with lots and lots of flags, too, but at least this week it gets a bit of a break – the mistakes should be even.

Offensively, the ground game might be struggling, but the passing attack has perked up with 560 yards over the last two weeks after failing to get to 200 yards in any of the first four games. Freshman Jake Lange might not be much of a runner, and interceptions have been an issue, but at least the offense is starting to move a little more through the air.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UAB hasn’t been perfect, and the offense has to start doing a whole lot more after failing to get past 325 yards in either of the last two games, but the defense will take over.

The Blazer run D won’t allow more than 50 yards, the secondary will pick off a few passes, and it’ll be a second straight easy win after taking out Florida Atlantic 31-14.

Alabama looks to play a complete game against Southern Miss

Alabama should beat Southern Miss easily, but the question is, will they dominate for sixty minutes?

No. 1 Alabama has started the 2021 season undefeated with a 3-0 record. For most schools, that’s enough, but at Alabama, you are not just expected to win, you are expected to completely dominate.

As Alabama heads into week four, the question remains, can Alabama play a complete sixty-minute football game?

Southern Miss enters the contest with a 1-2 record. Let’s take a look at the Golden Eagles.

Southern Miss Preview:

Offensively, you are going to recognize one name, Frank Gore Jr., the starting running back for the Golden Eagles. Gore is the son of NFL running back Frank Gore. Gore is the playmaker for the Golden Eagle offense and if Alabama can limit explosive plays from Gore, the Tide should make quick work on defense.

At quarterback, the Golden Eagles have been inconsistent. Starter Trey Lowe is expected to miss with an injury. Lowe actually has a connection with the Tide. His grandfather Woodrow played linebacker for Alabama from 1972-75. He was a three-time All-American for the Crimson Tide.

Freshman Ty Keyes has stepped in for Lowe but has only completed 52.6% of his passes for just one touchdown and two interceptions. Keyes has also been sacked 10 times.

If there was ever a game that the Alabama defensive line should dominate, it’s this week against Southern Miss. Through three games the Southern Miss quarterbacks have been sacked 16 times.

Defensively, the Golden Eagles have been decent. But their competition hasn’t been the strongest.

Southern Miss has been stout against the run, giving up just 43.7 yards rushing per game, but as I mentioned, the competition has not been great. The Alabama offense should be able to move around the Golden Eagle defense with relative ease.

Alabama Preview:

We know all the stats for both sides of the ball for the Tide. So for the preview, let’s just look at what I believe we need to see from Alabama on Saturday.

The Alabama offensive line needs to play mistake-free football and consistently push around the Southern Miss defensive front. The running game needs to be a focal point and it needs to be explosive. Bryce Young needs to be more consistent on the deep ball and the wideouts need to create more separation and cut down on dropped passes. Overall the offense needs to play a complete game for the entire sixty minutes.

It is much of the same for the Alabama defense. The guys up front need to penetrate consistently and make plays in the backfield. The linebackers need to fill the proper lanes and make the tackle. The secondary needs to take proper angles and like the linebackers, make the tackle.

There is too much talent on the Alabama defense to not play better than what they did this past Saturday. Let’s see if they can regroup and get better.

Overall Thoughts:

It’s really simple for Alabama this weekend, play a complete sixty-minute football game with the same intensity and focus from start to finish.

I believe Alabama will prove they have what it takes to be a championship football team. The talent is there, let’s see if the leadership and intangibles are there too.

Score Prediction: Alabama 56 Southern Miss 7

Southern Miss Golden Eagles College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense that should’ve been a whole lot better was fine early, struggled late, and now has eight starters expected to return for new head coach Will Hall. The O that came up with 372 yards and 25 points per game should be more balanced, efficient, and explosive – at least that’s the goal. It all starts with …

– The running game has to be stronger because the offensive front has to be better. Four starters should be back around 6-5, 339-pound former JUCO transfer Khalique Washington, a potential all-star talent at left tackle who’ll get a look from the pro types.

If the line is just okay, the backs will do the rest with the 1-2 punch of Frank Gore Jr. and Darius Maberry quick enough and explosive enough to average close to six yards per pop. Gore led the way with 708 yards and two scores.

The quarterback situation should be set around Trey Lowe, a former West Virginia Mountaineer who got his feet wet last year as one of the three quarterbacks who saw plenty of work. Tate Whatley is gone and Jack Abraham left for Mississippi State, but Louisville transfer Tee Webb will get a shot. Mobility is a factor, but having one guy to rely on will be a big deal compared to last year.

The receiving corps is in place to help the cause. The tight ends played a huge role last year – three caught eight passes or more, and they’re all back – but veteran WR Tim Jones is done. Leading receiver Jason Brownlee is a 6-3 deep threat who caught 34 passes for 610 yards and five scores, and Demarcus Jones and Antoine Robinson are midrange veterans to rely on.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles Football Schedule Analysis: The non-conference slate isn’t bad. Forget the date at Alabama, the Golden Eagles under new head coach Will Hall can shoot for 3-0 against at South Alabama, Grambling and Troy.

There are two back-to-back road games that should all be a problem – Bama, Rice, UTSA and Louisiana Tech – but the UAB and North Texas games are at home and closing out at home against FIU isn’t bad.

Missing Marshall, Florida Atlantic and WKU from the East is massive, Going to Middle Tennessee isn’t easy, but again, the date with FIU is at home.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Southern Miss Golden Eagles Offense 3 Things To Know

– TheSouthern Miss offense wasn’t good enough. It had good parts, it had good moments, and it had a good defense to pick up the slack, but there wasn’t any running game, and the O finished averaging just 407 yards and 27 points per game.

There’s too much talent returning to be so mediocre again. It starts with new offensive coordinator Matt Kubik improving the ground attack.

CFN in 60 Video: Auburn Preview
Southern Miss at Auburn, Sept. 26
[jwplayer TgGXcphz]

The offensive line was good in pass protection, but it was one of the worst in America in giving up tackles for loss – allowing over seven per game. On the plus side, four starters are expected back around rising sophomore Coker Wright at one of the tackle spots and Arvin Fletcher at guard. There’s good size and decent depth – this group has to be better.

There are a ton of running back options who got in a little work, and now they need room to move. 220-pound senior Kevin Perkins came in from the JUCO thanks and ran for a team-high 547 yards with three scores, and 242-pound banger Steven Anderson is back after scoring three times. The ground game as a whole, though, finished with just 1,527 yards and averaged 3.5 yards per carry.

The Golden Eagles have their quarterback. Jack Abraham took the job two years ago, and improved last season hitting 68% of his passes for almost 3,500 yards with 19 scores. Backup Tate Whatley is back, but as the bowl loss to Tulane showed, he needs to be a whole lot better when he gets his chances.

Star receiver Quez Watkins is now a Philadelphia Eagle, and five of the top seven pass catchers are gone, but senior Tim Jones is back after leading the team with 73 catches for 902 yards and three scores.

Speedster Jaylond Adams is back after averaging over 16 yards per catch, but it’s a thin overall group that needs the recruiting class and a slew of transfers to bump things up. The hope is for Arkansas transfer Grayson Gunter to take over the tight end job right away.

Saints bring back versatile offensive lineman Cameron Tom

The New Orleans Saints brought back another one of their free agents, when versatile backup guard/center Cameron Tom re-signed with the team

[jwplayer sRo2qiv6-ThvAeFxT]

While the New Orleans Saints are one of the few teams returning a highly-rated offensive line intact with all five starters, things aren’t as stable as they appear on the surface in 2020. The team re-signed injury-prone left guard Andrus Peat to a huge contract with $33 million guaranteed in the first few years, possibly their first misstep of free agency. They also aren’t high on the performance of right guard Larry Warford, whose play declined in 2019 when his conditioning left a bit to be desired. Those frustrations have left some outlets speculating that Warford could be moved on draft day for the right price.

So it’s a good thing the Saints brought back one of their own free agents to back up the interior trio of Peat, Warford, and second-year center Erik McCoy. The official NFL transactions wire reported that the Saints re-signed offensive lineman Cameron Tom, who spent the 2019 season recovering from a shoulder injury suffered late in the summer.

Tom initially signed with the Saints as a center out of Southern Mississippi (To The Top!) back in 2017, developing on the practice squad with the help of NFL-quality coaching. He ended up playing 178 snaps on offense as a backup guard in 2018, appearing in 11 different games (and starting that year’s regular season finale against the Carolina Panthers).

Before he went down with that injury in 2019, Tom had competed for snaps at both center and left guard during training camp. While McCoy claimed the starting job at center early in the summer, Tom outplayed free agent acquisition Nick Easton at that spot, earning the backup job behind McCoy while Easton moved his focus to left guard. Tom’s injury ended up forcing former seventh-round pick Will Clapp into the lineup at center when McCoy missed a series late last season.

We should expect a similar situation in 2020, though Tom would be a candidate to replace Warford should the veteran get traded. While the Saints could roll into training camp with some combination of Tom, Easton, and Clapp competing for the starting job at right guard, it doesn’t feel realistic for the Saints to move Warford without first drafting a prospect who could take over for him.

Mountain West Football Bowl Projections After Week 12

Find out where the Mountain West team are projected to go bowling this week.

[jwplayer 18QegcJn-sNi3MVSU]

Mountain West Football Bowl Projections After Week 12

Two more teams are bowl eligible this week.

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

Utah State, Hawaii are now bowl eligible

Two more Mountain West teams became bowl eligible over the weekend when Hawaii outlasted UNLV, 21-7, and Utah State survived Wyoming, 26-21, while also losing quarterback Jordan Love to an injury.

This now gives the league seven bowl-eligible teams and there are three teams at 4-6 in Fresno State, San Jose State, and Colorado State. Only two have a chance at six wins since the Spartans and Bulldogs play each other. The Rams are likely out as they would have to defeat Wyoming and Boise State to get to six.

With seven bowl-eligible teams, there still could be one or teams left out. There are five official Mountain West bowl spots. BYU has officially accepted an invitation to the Hawaii Bowl. Technically, the other half of the bowl goes to an AAC team but Hawaii is also an option.

It would make a whole lot of sense for the Hawaii Bowl to have is hometown Warriors play a former rival in BYU. The only way the Warriors are passed over is if the American has a ranked team available. There is a real possibility of three AAC teams being ranked at the end of the year; some combination of SMU, Memphis, Navy, and Cincinnati.

It all depends on the bowl and how many tickets they want to sell or if they want a good matchup. Hawaii vs. BYU could be both but it also would be attractive for the bowl game to have BYU vs. a team ranked in the 20s over the Warriors.

In this reincarnation of the Hawaii Bowl which dates back to 2002, the game has never had a ranked team in its game and that might be hard to pass up.

There is also some bowl shuffling going on with the Big Ten and SEC having more teams in the New Year’s Six and playoff to not allow enough teams to fill its required spots, and that is how the Mountain West could find space for all seven bowl-eligible teams.

There is an itch to just put Boise State in the Cotton Bowl but with the AAC having a fairly deciding edge that will have to wait until things look more realistic for the Broncos.

With some bowl swapping, we welcome the Frisco Bowl to our bowl projections.

A few notes about the bowl lineups. Starting with the Hawaii Bowl. The game has a vaguely worded tie-in which is a combination between BYU, Hawaii or an AAC team. The Warriors have a 13-game schedule and must have seven wins to secure a bowl berth. Technically, BYU takes the Mountain West spot but a Cougars vs. Warriors matchup would be a classic WAC rivalry renewal.

There is a new bowl this year and it’s a Power Five opponent from the Big Ten in the Armed Forces Bowl.

Overall, the league has six guaranteed bowl berths and is a backup for the Cheez-It Bowl if the Pac-12 or Big 12 does not have enough teams eligible. As always, there can be trades for the best matchups.

Finally, if the Mountain West is the highest-rated team in the College Football Playoff then a New Year’s Six Bowl game is an option at either the Cotton or Orange Bowl.
