South Dakota staggers South Dakota State on deflected Hail Mary TD

South Dakota with a miraculous victory over South Dakota State

South Dakota scored a stunning victory over rival South Dakota State on Saturday, 23-20, on one of the most amazing Hail Mary’s as the game ended.

Carson Camp eluded pressure from South Dakota Stateā€™s rush and threw it to about the 4-yard line where it was tipped several times. Webb outjumped teammate Caleb Vander Esch at the 1 and took a step into the end zone.

Caleb Vander Esch’s cousin is Leighton Vander Esch of the Dallas Cowboys.

ā€œIā€™ve never seen anything like it,ā€ USD linebacker Jack Cochrane told the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. ā€œI didnā€™t have a really good view, so I was watching the video board and I did a double-take, like, we caught it? It was hard to describe.ā€

There are those who think South Dakota came back from the dead.

Eight seconds earlier, SD State decided to try and run out the clock on a fourth-and-2.

Rather than punting,Ā Chris Oladokun took the snap, scrambled around but pressure from the defense forced him to throw the ball. Oladokun threw it as high as he could and the clock ticked down to zero as it sailed out of bounds. But after a review the officials put one second back on the clock, and USD pulled off the miracle.

ā€œWe practice that play, weā€™ve timed it ourselves,ā€ South Dakota State coach John Stiegelmeier said. ā€œItā€™s eight or nine seconds. Thatā€™s how fickle the game of football is. One second and a whole different outcome.ā€

South Dakota Stateā€™s Isaiah Davis unleashed a devastating stiff-arm in the FCS Championship Game

Just a brutal touchdown run punctuated by a stellar stiff-arm from Isaiah Davis.

You’d be forgiven if you weren’t aware that football was still happening in the midst of this lovely spring. But it is, and the FCS Championship between the Sam Houston State Bearkats and the South Dakota State Jackrabbits was one to remember on Sunday.

South Dakota State running back Isaiah Davis was doing it all for the Jackrabbits, racking up three rushing touchdowns and 178 total yards. His longest touchdown of the day was on this 85-yard scramble where he made the Bearkats defense look foolish to give South Dakota State the 21-17 lead in the fourth quarter.

Oh, and not only that, Davis also threw this devastating stiff-arm to make it all happen.

Talk about a dominating run and a brutal stiff-arm to match for the fourth quarter touchdown and the lead.

Unfortunately for the Jackrabbits, the Bearkats were able to mount an offensive comeback of their own to take the lead and the win 23-21 in the final moments of the fourth. Still, an impressive day for Davis and an incredible touchdown nonetheless!

Chargers had pre-draft meeting with South Dakota State FB Mikey Daniel

The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to find Derek Watt’s replacement in the upcoming draft.

The Chargers lost fullback Derek Watt earlier this offseason after he signed with the Steelers.

Coach Anthony Lynn said that the team plans to have a fullback to fill the void, adding, “We have a couple of prospects for that.ā€

Among the crop is former South Dakota State FB Mikey Daniel.

According to Draft Wire’s Justin Melo, Los Angeles had a virtual pre-draft meeting with Daniel.

Daniel is one of the top fullbacks in this year’s draft class. Not only is he reliable as a pass-blocker, but he can run the ball and catch the ball well out of the backfield.

Daniel, the 6-foot and 235 pounder finished his colleigate career with 1,728 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns on 364 carries.

In 2017 and 2019, Daniel earned Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) Honor Roll.

Daniel currently projects as a Day 3 option or priority free agent.
