Diana Taurasi was a hilarious soundbite during the Women’s Final Four and fans couldn’t get enough

Taurasi was a walking one-liner.

There are few things WNBA great Diana Taurasi hasn’t accomplished.

From being three NCAA titles, three WNBA titles, and five Olympic gold medals, to six Euroleague Championships and almost countless individual accolades, she’s one of the most talented people to ever dribble a basketball.

If you weren’t already familiar with her off the court, as it turns out, the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer also brings a lot to the table as an analyst. How could someone who’s achieved so much not have a keen eye for the game?

During the Women’s Final Four matchups on Friday night — where Taurasi hosted ESPN’s Megacast simultaneously with fellow great Sue Bird — she brought another element to her terrific insight: A dry comedic wit.

The first notable instance occurred during No. 1 overall seed South Carolina’s (8.5-point favorites coming in) matchup with Louisville.

When the Gamecocks began to pull away for good during the third quarter (before eventually winning 72-59 to advance to the National Title Game), Taurasi commented on their amazing, natural athletic ability.

Nothing more.

Why are Bird and their guest Kelsey Plum cracking up and hiding their faces behind Red Solo cups at Taurasi’s completely factual analysis? Basketball isn’t supposed to be funny, you guys. It’s serious business.

“You can’t help it,” said Plum in reaction.

Later, when Connecticut (one-point underdogs before tip-off) squared off against Louisville, Taurasi chimed in with more trademark excellence.

As former Stanford star and current Sparks centerpiece Nneka Ogwumike joined the Taurasi-Bird dynamic duo, Taurasi mused about the incredible dedication today’s young athletes have to basketball when compared to herself.

Hey, we’ve all been there, right? Why run an extra suicide or eat brown rice for dinner when the pizza and Coke is right there? If one of the greatest athletes ever lives her life to the fullest (i.e. lounging on the couch), why can’t we?

Diana Taurasi: Role Model.

Between the jokes, the honesty, and the analysis, fans watching the ESPN Megacast understandably couldn’t get enough of the ever-charismatic Taurasi. Here’s some reaction:

Clemson point guard receiving interest from South Carolina in portal

After entering the transfer portal, Nick Honor is receiving interest from South Carolina.

After two seasons of play with the Tigers, point guard Nick Honor entered the transfer portal in hopes of finding a new home, and now, South Carolina may be a potential landing spot.

According to John Rothstein of CBS Sports, Honor has received interest from the Gamecocks and nine other teams. Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Minnesota, and South Florida are among the nine others.

Originally at Fordham, Honor transferred to Clemson in 2019 and was forced to sit out of the 2019-2020 season because of NCAA eligibility rules.

The 5-foot-10 playmaker has had flashes of brilliance with the Tigers, one of which came on Feb. 12, 2021, when he hit a game-winning 3-pointer against Georgia Tech with 1.1 seconds remaining.

Ultimately, however, Honor floated in and out of the starting lineup over the past two seasons and couldn’t be a consistent scorer. In 33 games this past season, Honor averaged 7.7 points and 2.4 assists per game.

If Honor does become a Gamecock, it will only bring more drama to the rivalry between the two in-state schools.

Alabama vs. South Carolina: How to watch, stream, listen

Here’s how you can consume Alabama’s matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Alabama squeaked past Vanderbilt in a game that had Tide faithful on the edge of their seats on Wednesday in a 74-72 win against the hot Commodores, who hadn’t lost at home in four contests prior to Alabama’s arrival in Nashville.

The Crimson Tide will look to further improve their standing in the Southeastern Conference as they take on the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday evening.

Jaden Shackelford leads Alabama in scoring on the season, averaging a clip of nearly 17 points per game on the 2021-22 campaign.

The Tide ranks twelfth in the nation in scoring offense with 80.2 points per game, but 141st in scoring margin while allowing just over 75 points per game on defense.

Jermaine Couisnard leads the Gamecocks with 11.5 points per game, he has shot at a clip of 41% on the season.

Alabama vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why South Carolina Will Win

The Gamecocks are stepping up their game at just the right time.

They’ve won four straight by coming up with one of its hottest shooting stretches from the field, and the defense is coming off of four straight brilliant games at guarding from three.

Bothering teams from the outside isn’t anything new.

Mississippi State hit as many threes as you did in the 66-56 South Carolina win a few days ago – the Bulldogs missed all 11. Alabama shoots three after three after three, but it’s not making enough of them.

It has hit 40% or better from three just once since Thanksgiving, but …

Why Alabama Will Win

Alabama keeps winning. It has taken down four of the last five games and gave Kentucky a bit of a push on the road.

No, it’s not all that accurate from three, but it takes so many shots from the outside that it makes enough to matter.

Can the Tide take it to the rim, too? South Carolina commits a whole lot of fouls, it turns the ball over too much, and the Crimson Tide have to generate takeaways, attack the goal, and hope to get fouled enough to slow things down at times.

But …

What’s Going To Happen

South Carolina might have hit 10-of-11 against Mississippi State from the free throw line, but overall it’s been a struggle. It has a bigger problem making enough threes to keep up with the onslaught from the Tide shooters.

Alabama will do a great job on the offensive boards and will go a whole lot faster to pull away when needed.

Kentucky vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

Kentucky has been on a roll since the loss to Auburn.

It roasted Kansas, it stuffed Alabama, and it’s been able to rise up with eight wins in the last nine games before it’a rebounding well, the defense has been good enough from three, and the shooting inside has been its normal stellar self.

No, this isn’t the most consistent team around, but that’s okay. South Carolina isn’t going to shoot the lights out from three, and it’s going to give the ball up over and over and over again for easy points, but …

Why South Carolina Will Win

This Gamecock team is something fierce inside considering there’s not a ton of size when Wildens Leveque isn’t out there.

There’s a deep bench full of parts that keep attacking everything, forces a slew of mistakes, and goes hard after every miss on the offensive end. You can’t hang with Kentucky if you’re not at least close in rebounding margin, and South Carolina can do that.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

South Carolina is unable to come up with much in a shootout.

It’s a team built on toughness, defense, and keeping games in range. If it can keep Kentucky in the low 70s, there’s a shot, In the 60s, and this gets interesting at home.

The Gamecocks are 8-0 when keeping opponents to under 66 points.

Kentucky has been under 66 just three times this year. It’ll get pushed, but it’ll pull away on a few good scoring runs late in the first half.

Tennessee vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

Can the Vols get hot from the field?

Of course, everyone is great when they shoot well, but they’ve been terrific from three at times lately – great against Florida and Texas A&M, but struggled against Texas – and it wins when it’s on no matter where the shots are coming from.

They’re 13-1 when hitting 39% or better, and 2-5 when they’re under the mark. South Carolina keeps teams to 40% from the field, but it hasn’t been struggling with the D in January against the better teams.

Tennessee hit 44% from the field in the 66-46 win a few weeks ago, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why South Carolina Will Win

South Carolina might not always be great from the outside, and it’s not all that consistent, but the defense has been solid lately, it’s been terrific at times at guarding the three, and it’ll always bring a bit of a fight.

It’s this simple. The Gamecocks have got to keep the score low to pull this off.

They’re 8-0 when allowing fewer than 66 points, and they’re 5-8 when they don’t. That’s a heavy lift against a Tennessee team that can score in bunches at times, but being on the road has been a difference-maker.

Nine of the 11 times Tennessee has scored more than 70 points were at home, and it’s been under that mark in seven of the ten games that weren’t in Knoxville.

South Carolina has to grind this down to a halt at times, win the rebounding margin, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee will have a bit too much offense down the stretch.

South Carolina turns it over too often, it’s not going to have the pop from three, and it’s just not good enough from the free throw line to take advantage of its chances.

It’ll be close for a while, and it certainly won’t be a scoring-fest, but the Vols will escape.

Best Auburn Twitter replies to South Carolina basketball

This has become one of Auburn’s best traditions.

Auburn basketball rolled to a 81-66 win over South Carolina and you know what that means, a flood of tweets from Auburn fans in the Gamecock’s final score tweet.

After the dominant win over LSU,  the Bayou Bengals tweet had over 1,000 replies and 230 quote tweets, many of which were Auburn fans.

The response to the South Carolina Twitter post was not too far behind. It has over 900 replies and 100 retweets. Auburn fans continue to be all over this trend.

Here are some of the highlights from the win over South Carolina.

Takeaways from Auburn’s 81-66 win over South Carolina

Auburn picked up their second conference win of the season Tuesday night.

The moment Daymeon Fishback said “we’ve got ourselves a ball game” on the SEC Network broadcast as South Carolina lead 4-2 (with less than two minutes gone by), I realized the game was in fact over.

At one point, South Carolina had just as many turnovers as they had made field goals (17 apiece). The Gamecocks battled back, cutting the Auburn lead to eight with less than six minutes remaining, but Auburn’s athleticism eventually took over in an 81-66 win for the Tigers.

Shooting was not an issue for Auburn, who finished the day shooting 51.8% from the floor and 42.9% from three.

Here are five takeaways from Auburn’s tenth straight win.
