Twitter reacts to Commanders hiring Adam Peters as GM

It’s overwhelmingly positive for the Commanders.

The Washington Commanders began their search for a new head of football operations on Monday. On Friday, Washington hired its top target, San Francisco 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters.

Peters was widely considered the most coveted GM candidate on the market, with many finding it difficult to believe he’d leave San Francisco. Over the past two years, Peters has turned down multiple opportunities to interview.

Why Washington?

It’s a new day. Does anyone believe Peters even picks up the phone if Daniel Snyder called for an interview? New owner Josh Harris and his ownership group quickly identified Peters as their top target and closed on him within the week. With Peters in place, Washington will now turn its attention to finding a head coach.

How is social media reacting to the hiring of Peters? Unsurprisingly, it’s mostly all positive. We say mostly because, well, some people are never happy.

Here are the latest Twitter/X reactions.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning will NOT be coming to Alabama

Dan Lanning denies rumors of being Alabama’s next head coach

Yesterday was one of the hardest days in the history of the University of Alabama. It’s impossible to say goodbye and thank you who haas done so much for one school and one program. Unfortunately, life most go on and the head coaching search in Tuscaloosa is in full swing.

Rumors were spreading like wildfire last night that Oregon head coach Dan Lanning was in Tuscaloosa meaning with the Alabama brass for the position. He was Alabama’s top target and a lot of people seemed quite confident he was the man.

However, just moments ago Lanning released a video stating that he will not be leaving Oregon. I trust Greg Byrne knows what he is doing, but with the top candidate off the table it will be interesting to see who gets the call next. My guess is Lane Kiffin and Kaleb DeBoer are the hottest names on the board.

There is no official word that Lanning was ever offered the job.

Jimmy Graham says goodbye to New Orleans for maybe the last time

Jimmy Graham said goodbye to New Orleans Saints fans for what may be the last time:

Wishes for clear skies and safe travels are in order for Jimmy Graham; the fan-favorite tight end said goodbye to New Orleans Saints fans for what may be the last time on Wednesday, sharing a photo of the Crescent City skyline from his private airplane on social media.

“It’s been real (New Orleans),” Graham wrote, “Thank you for all the love.”

Graham made a surprise return to New Orleans at the start of Saints training camp, coming back to finish his career where it started. Graham only caught 6 passes while playing behind Juwan Johnson, Foster Moreau, and Taysom Hill, but he ended his season with 4 touchdown receptions. He converted a first down on each of the other catches.

What’s next for Graham? He had been making preparations to take his sailboat around the world before re-signing with the Saints last summer, so that may be his next stop. After that — maybe the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Graham doesn’t have the All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition or championship rings of other tight ends to be enshrined in Canton, but his 89 touchdown catches (fourth-most among tight ends in the history of the sport) are tough to ignore. Graham’s eligibility won’t be discussed until 2028, but it’s something we should be looking for when the time comes.

In the meantime: here’s to Jimmy Graham. That he was able to come back to the Saints after being away for so long and still make a positive impact is wildly impressive. If this is it for him, he’s accomplished a career worth reflecting on fondly.

Teammates publicly side with Jameis Winston after late-game audible

Dennis Allen may be upset at the Saints offense decision to get Jamaal Williams a touchdown late in the game, but his teammates loved it:

The New Orleans Saints demolition of the Atlanta Falcons was, in a way, overshadowed by late game controversy. With the game well in hand, the offense decided to get Jamaal Williams his first touchdown of the year instead of kneeling the ball out. This decision resulted in Arthur Smith cursing Dennis Allen out after the game. It was later revealed the offense went against Allen’s wishes.

The Falcons may feel like it was running up the score, but they were merely collateral damage. The decision to get Williams a touchdown was all about making Williams feel valued for his season of hard work. This was similar to a player trying to get an incentive on the last week.

As the quarterback, fingers will naturally point towards Jameis Winston. Winston and teammates have made it clear this was a team decision. Still, the quarterback will be the one who will receive much of the praise or criticism, depending on which side you’re on. Allen expressed his displeasure with the decision, but teammates have rallied around Winston in the aftermath:

Twitter reacts to the end of the Commanders’ season

Twitter reacts to Rivera’s final game, Forbes, McLaurin, the future and more.

The 2023 NFL season is over for the Washington Commanders. One that began with such promise and a 2-0 record ends with a 4-13 mark and eight consecutive losses.

The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Commanders 38-10 on Sunday at FedEx Field in what looked like a home game for Dallas. Washington announced a sellout on Saturday, but most knew Sunday’s game would be a sea of blue.

The loss is expected to be the final game of the Ron Rivera era. Rivera will finish his time in Washington with a 26-40-1 record and was also the head of football operations.

It was another ugly defeat for the Commanders, but unlike previous ones, fans were looking ahead with promise. Not only did Washington secure the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, but fans are excited about the prospect of owner Josh Harris hiring a new general manager and head coach.

With the regular season in the books and a critical and exciting offseason ahead, we look back at how Twitter — or X — reacted to Washington’s final game of the 2023 season.

Twitter reacts: Arkansas fans’ patience running short with Mike Neighbors

Arkansas fans aren’t happy with coach Mike Neighbors right now as the Hogs look to be headed to another NIT.

Arkansas women’s basketball doesn’t have the same expectations as men’s basketball.

Not right now, anyway.

Not with where Arkansas has been over the last year-and-a-half.

The Razorbacks lost their SEC opener to league cellar-dweller Kentucky on Thursday after scoring just 14 points in the first half.

The game and result is hardly a back-breaker, but NCAA Tournament-bound teams beat the teams they’re supposed to beat. Arkansas was supposed to beat Kentucky, road game or not.

Coach Mike Neighbors has taken the Hogs to the postseason each of the last four years that the postseason has been held, starting with an NIT bid 2018-19. In 2019-20, Arkansas was in the midst of its best regular season with Neighbors at the helm, but the NCAA Tournament was canceled. Three years ago, Arkansas made it, but was ousted in the first round as a 4-seed. Two years ago, the Hogs lost in the first round as a 10-seed. And last year, it was back to the NIT.

Right now, through 16 games, Arkansas is looking at another NIT-type of season, leaving Razorbacks fans frustrated at Neighbors and where the program is headed.

Fans on Twitter push back as Mickey Loomis tries to revise Saints history

Mickey Loomis attempted some revisionist history when comparing Derek Carr’s first year with the Saints to Drew Brees’ debut as the league-leading passer:

New Orleans Saints general manager earned some ire from his team’s fans on social media during his latest appearance on WWL Radio, having tried his hand at some revisionary history. When recapping Derek Carr’s up-and-down first year in New Orleans with WWL’s Jeff Nowak, Loomis made an impressive misstep in comparing Carr’s lack of success to the challenges Brees experienced in his first year on the job as the Saints’ starting quarterback.

“I mean, this is Derek’s first year with us and if we went back to 2006 and looked at Brees’ first season or with us, you wouldn’t say, ‘Wow, that guy is going to the Hall of Fame’ after season 1 or season 2, so sometimes it takes a while for us to be familiar with him,” Loomis mused. “For him to have a real grasp of the offense, in terms of being reactive instead of thinking and making a play and getting on the same page with our staff, our coaches as well as our players.”

Archival materials aren’t as common dating back to 2006 — which makes sense given the Saints’ status in a smaller market with a decreased media presence in the wake of Hurricane Katrina — but here’s what one of the longest-tenured analysts on the beat had to say at time.

Writing for the Houma Courier, Mike Detillier recapped Brees’ first 13 games as such: “Brees has been just what the football doctor ordered for the Saints as far as intelligence, leadership, production and gamesmanship is concerned. … The former Purdue All-American and his former teammate in San Diego, halfback LaDainian Tomlinson, should be the co-MVP’s in the league this season.”

And speaking as someone who lived to experience it, no one was calling Brees a future Hall of Famer after his first season. But even the critics who had called him damaged goods over the summer were won over by the time he ended the year with Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro recognition, having lead the NFL in passing yards (4,418). When Brees followed up that performance with more sky-high passing numbers (and, critically, winning seasons and a Super Bowl title) he was being discussed as a Hall of Fame lock by the 2011 record-breaking campaign.

But back to Loomis’ point and the comparison to Carr. It’s true that few fans were putting Brees in Canton going into the final week of the 2006 regular season or even in 2007. At the same time, Brees had done much more to give fans reason to think this team had a future with him under center than Carr has this year.

In 2006, Brees conducted an offense that ranked fifth in scoring, third on third downs, and third in yards per play. Carr’s version of the offense ranks 14th, 16th, and 18th in each of those same categories. And let’s not forget that, at the time, Brees was a 27-year old coming off of reconstructive shoulder surgery with 59 career starts behind him. Carr joined the Saints with five years and 83 more games’ worth of experience behind him.

Sure, Pete Carmichael isn’t the play caller that Sean Payton was, but when you’re comparing players like Loomis is trying to do you’ve got to keep focus limited to those players. Loomis might be trying to pull a fast one on a disgruntled Saints fanbase, but fans on social media rightfully didn’t let it slide. Here’s what they’re saying in response on Twitter, the platform currently known as X:

Twitter reacts to Commanders’ loss to 49ers

Washington fans and media reacted to Chase Young’s return, Sam Howell, Rivera and the 2024 NFL draft.

The San Francisco 49ers clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC playoffs and home-field advantage through the playoffs with a 27-10 win over the Washington Commanders.

For Washington, the loss moved the Commanders one spot closer to potentially drafting a new franchise quarterback in 2024. Speaking of quarterbacks, Sam Howell was back in the starting lineup after being benched earlier in the week. However, Jacoby Brissett missed the game due to a hamstring injury.

Howell played well in the first half but suffered through another brutal second half, throwing two interceptions, the first of which occurred at the San Francisco five-yard line with the Commanders down only 10 points.

Chase Young also returned to FedEx Field, finishing with just one tackle. Washington also moves one step closer to a new regime with only one game remaining in the 2023 season.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Washington’s loss to San Francisco.

Josh Allen’s heartwarming reunion with former Bills teammate (video)

Josh Allen’s heartwarming reunion with former #Bills teammate (video):

Last weekend, the Buffalo Bills were in Los Angeles to play the Chargers. Prior to the game, as both teams were warming up, Bills quarterback Josh Allen recognized an old teammate when he was warming up in the end zone.

Former Bills kicker Stephen Hauschka played every game for the Buffalo Bills from 2017 to 2019, overlapping with Allen in the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

In 48 regular season games, Hauschka was 73/89 in field goals and 84/87 from extra points, and they both played in the wild-card game which was the Bills’ first playoff game with Allen as quarterback against the Houston Texans in the 2019 postseason.

Allen went over to Hauschka and gave him a very lovable hug. The former kicker retired in 2020 after a 12-year career across five teams. He was with his family for the Bills game against the Chargers. Allen said hi and remembered Stephen’s wife and son’s name, saying hi to both of them individually.

Allen is a great teammate and we love to see the love between two teammates and the quarterback’s genuine care for his teammate and their family.
