WATCH: 2023 class represents Texas in the All-American Bowl

Texas is loaded with All-American talent.

Texas football has plenty to look forward to in the next few seasons. Five players, some of which might make an impact right away at Texas, took the field for the All-American Bowl on Saturday after sending six signees to the All-American Game.

Anthony Hill, Ryan Niblett, Payton Kirkland, S’maje Burrell and Tausili Akana represented the Longhorns 2023 class in the game. The group of players should play a crucial role for the team over the next four seasons. Four-star athlete Jelani McDonald also announced his commitment to Texas while at the game.

Hill, Akana and Burrell represent part of one of the best linebacker classes Texas has assembled in recent memory. Given the departures of DeMarvion Overshown and Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey, the class is much needed for depth and playing time.

Niblett and Kirkland continue the encouraging recruiting trends at their respective positions. Past coaches recruited bigger, slower receivers and smaller, quicker linemen. Texas is doing the opposite.

Niblett brings elite speed to Texas, while Kirkland is the big, imposing human that Kyle Flood looks for up front.

Here’s a look at the players that took the field for Texas in the game.

Where Texas commits fall in On3 Sports’ updated recruiting rankings

The Texas Longhorns have a strong 2023 recruiting class in the fold as of July 18.

The Texas Longhorns have a strong 2023 recruiting class in the fold as of July 18. On3 Sports’ recruiting analysts confirm that notion, listing Texas as the nation’s No. 5 overall class.

A few Texas targets fell high on On3’s updated recruiting rankings on Monday. Malik Muhammad, who makes his college decision on Wednesday, is ranked as the No. 30 overall player in the nation. Fellow Dallas-Fort Worth area player, Markis Deal, also enjoyed a high ranking at No. 58 overall. Other Texas targets and commits made the Top 100 as well.

Despite high rankings elsewhere, Texas commit Johntay Cook and high priority targets Anthony Hill and Javien Toviano surprisingly were not rated as highly by On3. Toviano checked in at No. 64 overall, while Anthony Hill ranked at No. 55.

While multiple players received four-star ratings, not every four-star made On3’s nationally ranked list. Here is a list of Texas commits that landed in On3 Sports’ updated top 300.

Where Texas’ 2023 recruiting class ranks after landing S’Maje Burrell

Texas is moving up the recruiting ranks.

Texas received great news over the weekend with the commitment of linebacker S’Maje Burrell. The rising three-star is the third member of Texas’ 2023 class, joining defensive back Jamel Johnson and defensive lineman Dylan Spencer.

Landing Burrell moves Texas’ 2023 class rating up to No. 22 in the country and No. 4 in the Big 12 conference. It is early in the recruiting process but the Horns currently sit behind Oklahoma (No. 16), Baylor (No. 6) and Texas Tech (No. 2) in the 247Sports composite rankings.

Steve Sarkisian and his staff are looking to put together back-to-back top-five recruiting classes in the 2023 cycle. Texas hosted a plethora of high priority prospects in what appeared to be a successful weekend in Austin.

The Longhorns remain firmly in the mix for many sought-after players, including five-star quarterback Arch Manning, running back Rueben Owens and linebacker Anthony Hill.

BOOM: Texas lands commitment from three-star LB S’Maje Burrell

Texas picks up its third commitment in the class of 2023.

Texas added a key piece to its 2023 recruiting class on Saturday with the commitment of three-star linebacker S’Maje Burrell.

The Longhorns have gotten a jump on the defensive side of the ball in the 2023 cycle. Burrell joins defensive back Jamel Johnson and defensive lineman Dylan Spencer as the only members of Texas’ 2023 class thus far.

Burrell had a fantastic junior season, totaling over 100 tackles with 13 tackles for loss along with five forced fumbles. He has a knack for being around the football and brings strong playmaking ability at a position of need.

The North Crowley product has racked up an impressive offer list including many big-name programs such as Texas, Ohio State, Oklahoma and USC.

Texas may not be done making some noise this weekend as the Horns are hosting many elite prospects for visits.
