Where did they go? Keeping up with ex-Browns around the league

Keeping track of what happened with some former Cleveland Browns players this offseason as they moved around the NFL

Now that the 53-man rosters are set around the league, it’s time to keep up with where some former Browns players from the 2020 season or the 2021 preseason wound up.

Colby Gossett: Another player claimed off waivers after the Browns cut the offensive lineman earlier this week, Gossett is now in Atlanta. There are some projections where Gossett could get immediate playing time for the Falcons, who have some injury issues on the OL.

KhaDarel Hodge: The popular wideout and special teams star was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Lions. Former Browns GM John Dorsey, who brought Hodge to Cleveland, is part of the Lions front office now too.

Karl Joseph: A starting safety in Cleveland last year, Joseph was cut by the Las Vegas Raiders. He is now on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad, and there is ample speculation he will be elevated quickly to the Steelers’ active roster once he clears COVID-19 protocols.

Terrance Mitchell: “Money” Mitchell is one of the starting cornerbacks for the Houston Texans. Mitchell signed in Houston as a free agent after three seasons in Cleveland.

Larry Ogunjobi: Ogunjobi defected from the Browns to the rival Bengals. The defensive tackle signed a one-year early in free agency. Ogunjobi is one of the Bengals top defensive starters.

Sheldrick Redwine: The young safety signed with the New York Jets right after being waived by the Browns. The Jets seem pretty excited to have Redwine in their secondary, too.

Sheldon Richardson: The versatile defensive lineman returns to Minnesota, where he played before coming to Cleveland in 2019. Richardson will start for the revamped Vikings defense.

Kyle Lauletta: Cleveland’s No. 3 QB dating back to last season was among the final cuts. He quickly signed in Jacksonville on the Jaguars’ practice squad.

Kendall Lamm: Lamm is playing the same role for the Tennessee Titans that he did in two years in Cleveland. He’s the top reserve offensive tackle. The Titans currently have COVID-19 issues that would have Lamm starting if the season began today.

Tavierre Thomas: The CB is in Houston, doing what he does best – making things happen on special teams. He is also Mitchell’s backup at outside CB on the Texans depth chart.

B.J. Goodson: Cleveland’s leading tackler in 2020, Goodson is still a free agent. The veteran linebacker remains unsigned.

Tae Davis: The LB and special teams fixture from 2019-2020 landed on injured reserve with the Houston Texans. He just recently had foot surgery.

Andrew Sendejo: Sendejo started 14 games for Cleveland in 2020 at safety. The veteran, who turns 34 this week, remains unsigned.

Olivier Vernon: Another veteran starter from last season, Vernon is also still unsigned.

Robert Jackson: Jackson was one of the earlier cuts for the Browns this summer. The cornerback, who primarily played special teams in Cleveland, is now on the Raiders’ practice squad.

Vincent Taylor: Taylor is climbing up the NFL ladder. A reserve defensive tackle in Cleveland, he’s now the starting “rush” tackle for the Texans.

Dontrell Hilliard: Yet another former Browns player who wound up in Houston, Hilliard was waived by the Texans and took an injury settlement. The running back is now a free agent.

Jets sign former Browns S Sheldrick Redwine

The Jets brought in Sheldrick Redwine to backup Marcus Maye and Lamarcus Joyner at safety.

The Jets added a new young defensive back to the roster after signing former Browns safety Sheldrick Redwine, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Redwine cleared waivers Wednesday after being cut by the Browns on Aug. 31. He played in 17 games for the Browns after being taken in the fourth round of the 2019 draft. He tallied 69 total tackles, one interception, a half-sack and three defended passes during his time in Cleveland. Redwine’s top play was an interpretation off Ben Roethlisberger in the Browns’ 2020 Wild Card win last season.

Redwine will likely be the backup to Marcus Maye and Lamarcus Joyner while Ashtyn Davis recovers from injury. He also tallied 329 snaps on special teams over the past two seasons.

Browns PFF grades in Week 16 pass the eye test of losing to the Jets

Outside of Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson, the PFF grades are deservedly low

The Pro Football Focus grades for games don’t always pass muster with the eye test. The PFF evaluators sometimes see things with different eyes than the fans or the media. It’s often neither right nor wrong, just different.

Not in Sunday’s Browns loss to the New York Jets.

The PFF game grades for Cleveland reflect the game notes and rewatch observations. In essence, Olivier Vernon, Sheldon Richardson and Joel Bitonio played well, David Njoku should have played more, Nick Harris had a terrible debut start, and Sheldrick Redwine probably shouldn’t play again.

First, the good…

Vernon and Richardson were the two highest-graded Browns on either side of the ball. Vernon earned his 88.0 overall with eight QB pressures, one sack, three tackles and impressive all-around play at end. Richardson also fared quite well at DT, posting an 81.7 grade. That was brought down by a missed TFL opportunity, but Richardson dominated the Jets aligned across from him consistently.

Bitonio was the top Dawg on offense with a 75.8. That marks the lowest “best” for the Browns offense all season, even in the dismal early-season losses to the Ravens and Steelers.

David Njoku was the only non-lineman to top 70. The tight end played just 31 snaps and was effective as both a receiver and a run blocker. His grade would have been much higher if not for a blown assignment in one of his two pass protection reps. In a game where both Austin Hooper and Harrison Bryant scored in the low 50s — a grade that feels too high for Bryant — Njoku needed more run.

Bryant wasn’t the only rookie to earn a low grade. Nick Harris bottomed out with a 50.6 in his first start at right guard. His pass-blocking grade of 28.9 brought back bad memories of Shon Coleman’s regrettable Browns era. Jets DT John Franklin-Myers dominated Harris off the snap on passing plays.

Then there’s Redwine. In just 12 snaps he earned a putrid 26.8 grade. There was some hope the second-year safety could build off a solid performance against the Giants in Week 15 but he bottomed back down to the unacceptable level of play he showed earlier in the season.

Final Browns injury report for Week 12: Denzel Ward, Sheldrick Redwine ruled out

Final Browns injury report for Week 12: Denzel Ward, Sheldrick Redwine ruled out and 3 others questionable for game vs. Jaguars

The Cleveland Browns secondary will be depleted when the team heads to Jacksonville to face the Jaguars in Week 12. Starting cornerback Denzel Ward and safety Sheldrick Redwine have been ruled out with injury.

They are the only two Browns who were ruled out on the team’s final injury report of the week. Three other Browns are officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. Right guard Wyatt Teller (calf), backup center Nick Harris (ankle) and starting safety Andrew Sendejo (groin) are all questionable.

Teller was also questionable with the same injury in Week 11 but played through it. Sendejo only practiced on Friday as a limited participant after missing the rest of the week. Harris was a fresh addition to the injury report on Friday.

The Browns held out several players as precautionary measures this week due to the COVID-19 threat. None of those players carries any injury designation, and no players tested positive on Friday.
