Browns put another starter on Injured Reserve in forgettable season

The forgettable season is over for Browns defensive tackle Shelby Harris, who has been placed on Injured Reserve.

The Cleveland Browns lost another starter on the defensive side of the football, placing defensive tackle Shelby Harris on Injured Reserve.

This ends the season for Harris and tallies another starter on IR for the team. This is just another notch in a lost season that has the team and its fanbase already turning the page toward free agency and the 2025 NFL draft.

Harris finishes his 2024 season with 1.5 sacks and five tackles for loss.

To fill his roster spot, the Browns have signed wide receiver and return man James Proche II to their active roster from their practice squad. To fill Proche’s spot on the practice squad, the Browns have brought back defensive tackle Michael Dwumfour.

Harris is still under contract for one more season in Cleveland, so we will see if the Browns bring him back. Given the amount of post-June 1 designations the Browns have versus the players the Browns may need to designate would indicate that the 33-year-old is going to be back in 2025. At least for training camp.

Dolphins shut down ex-Broncos pass rusher Bradley Chubb for season

The Dolphins will leave Bradley Chubb on the reserve/PUP list for the rest of the 2024 season.

Bradley Chubb’s season is over.

Chubb suffered a brutal knee injury in Week 17 last season and he spent the first 16 weeks of the 2024 campaign on the physically unable to perform list. His deadline to be activated from the PUP list arrived this week and the Dolphins opted to leave Chubb on the reserve list for the rest of the season.

Miami has a slim chance of making the NFL playoffs. If the Dolphins somehow reach the postseason, Chubb won’t be able to play.

Chubb, 28, was picked by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft out of N.C. State. The Broncos later traded Chubb and a fifth-round draft pick to the Dolphins in 2022 in exchange for a first-round pick in 2023, a fourth-rounder in 2024 and running back Chase Edmonds.

Chubb has played in 24 games with Miami, totaling 34 quarterback hits and 13.5 sacks. He has 92 QB hits and 39.5 sacks in 73 career games in the NFL.

Elsewhere on the ex-Bronco front, the Minnesota Vikings worked out defensive lineman Adam Gotsis and cornerback Michael Ojemudia earlier this week. Denver picked Gotsis in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft out and Ojemudia in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft.

Additionally, the Cleveland Browns placed former Broncos defensive lineman Shelby Harris on injured reserve, ending his season.

Ex-Broncos DL Shelby Harris gives controversial take on QB Bo Nix

“He did just enough and he lived off that defense,” ex-Broncos DL Shelby Harris said of Bo Nix’s win over the Browns.

The Denver Broncos crashed down to earth this past Thursday after allowing the Los Angeles Chargers to come back for a 34-27 victory.

Two games earlier, the Broncos defeated the Cleveland Browns 41-32 on Monday Night Football. Following that game, defensive lineman Shelby Harris gave a controversial take on rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

Harris, who played for five years with the Broncos, stated that Nix has been a beneficiary of the Broncos defense and that his lack of experience on the pro level has sometimes shown up.

”I think that he needs to make the little throws,” Harris said on his podcast. “It’s a lot of flare. Obviously, that big throw is going to get a lot of airtime. We’re going to talk on it. It was obviously a big throw. But also, the other throw should’ve been an interception.

“So we can (say), ‘Oh my God, great arm’ and all that, but I think he’s still a rookie. Obviously, the ceiling is there, he can be a very good quarterback, but he did just enough and he lived off that defense.”

Check out the entire clip below:

After video of his take went viral, Harris told this to fans on Twitter/X:

Harris, 33, has totaled 37 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 14 games this season.

Browns DT Shelby Harris leaves game with an elbow injury

Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Shelby Harris left the game against the Kansas City Chiefs with an elbow injury. He is questionable to return

Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Shelby Harris left the game against the Kansas City Chiefs with an elbow injury. Harris suffered the injury during the waning minutes of the first half. Harris able to walk off the field with trainers. He is questionable to return to the game.

The Browns disparately need Harris against the Chiefs. The Browns’ defensive line have played pathetically against the Chiefs’ banged up offensive line. The Chiefs have been able to move the ball with ease against the Browns front four.

The Browns defense have suffered a handful of injuries against the Chiefs. The team lost starting cornerback M.J. Emerson Jr. to a concussion at the start of the game. Myles Garrett suffered a scary eye injury that kept him off the field. Garrett’s return coincided with Harris’s injury.

Hopefully, the team is able to stay healthy for the remainder of the game. The Browns are down 21-0 to the Chiefs in the third quarter.

Jerry Jeudy isn’t the only ex-Bronco returning to Denver this week

Jerry Jeudy is one of three ex-Broncos players set to return to Denver on ‘Monday Night Football’ in Week 13.

The Denver Broncos are set to host the Cleveland Browns on Monday Night Football in Week 13 in a game that will feature three players returning to Empower Field at Mile High.

Perhaps most notable, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy will be playing against his former team for the first time since being traded to the Browns this spring. Jeudy, 25, was picked by the Broncos in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Alabama.

Jeudy showed flashes of potential but never quite lived up to his pre-draft hype in Denver, hauling in 211 receptions for 3,053 yards and 11 touchdowns in four seasons (57 games) with the Broncos.

Jeudy’s not the only ex-Bronco returning to Denver. The Browns also have defensive lineman Shelby Harris, who played for the Broncos from 2017-2021 before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks as part of the Russell Wilson trade. After one season in Seattle, Harris signed with Cleveland in 2023.

Finally, the Browns also have ex-Denver cornerback and special teams ace Mike Ford, who played for the Broncos in 2021. Ford has played for five NFL teams. This is his second stint in Cleveland.

Monday’s game will be nationally televised on ESPN, which is available to stream on fuboTV (try it free). Unfortunately, there’s no ManningCast scheduled for the Broncos-Browns matchup in Week 13.

Key matchups for Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Cleveland Browns

Key matchups for Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Cleveland Browns

Coming off a tough loss in South Florida, the Jacksonville Jaguars are set for their home opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday as both teams look to avoid an 0-2 start.

This week Jacksonville looks to be more consistent with its offensive production while Cleveland is again forced to deal with quarterback Deshaun Watson and his off-field issues as the Browns await the return of all-world running back Nick Chubb.

Week 2 will give both teams a better picture of what and who they are moving forward into the 2024 campaign. The Jaguars hope for better execution in their offensive approach following their blown lead to the Miami Dolphins.

With that in mind, Jaguars Wire is here to identify some key matchups for Jacksonville’s Week 2 matchup with Cleveland. Here are three matchups the Jaguars must win to avoid a winless start to the season.

Cleveland QB Deshaun Watson vs. Jacksonville’s defense

One of the key takeaways from this past Sunday was the Jaguars’ admirable defensive performance against the explosive Dolphins offense. They mostly limited significant explosive plays and generated four-man pressures through their front four.

Browns head coach and play-caller Kevin Stefanski is known for his offensive creativity and has put Watson in positions to succeed. But since returning from suspension nearly two seasons ago, the former Clemson standout has yet to return to his pre-2021 form.

Watson’s performance against the Dallas Cowboys offered a clear sign of his current abilities.

According to Next Gen Stats, Watson was pressured on 44.6% of dropbacks, finishing 5-of-17 for 22 yards against pressure while being sacked six times. His 23.2 percent dropback success rate was the lowest in a game in the Next Gen Stats era.

Watson has declined, and the Jaguars have the defense to force him off his spot and into bad decisions. Plus, Jacksonville has the athletic defenders necessary to stick with Watson in quarterback contain.

If defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen’s unit can generate pressures and rattle Watson early, it should be a good day for Jacksonville.

Jacksonville’s offensive line vs. Cleveland’s defensive line

The trenches will be a key matchup in this game but none more crucial than the Jaguars offensive line against the Browns stellar pass rush, led by All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett.

Jacksonville’s front five did a decent job of protecting franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence against the Dolphins, allowing a pressure rate of 32%, ranking No. 14 in the NFL in Week 1.

However, Cleveland defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is arguably the best in the game at his position and finds ways of consistently getting to the QB. Against the Cowboys, most of the Browns’ pressures came from a defensive front featuring three defensive ends and one defensive tackle.

Having an extra edge rusher lined up at the three-technique could prove disadvantageous for Jacksonville’s guards due to the speed and quickness of Cleveland’s rushers. Schwartz will likely deploy this fairly often in passing situations.

The biggest concern will be if the Jaguars can limit Garrett, arguably the best pass rusher in the world. This offensive line will also have to account for defensive tackles Dalvin Tomlinson and Shelby Harris, and defensive ends Za’Darius Smith and Alex Wright.

Jacksonville seems up for the challenge considering its Week 1 performance. Right guard Brandon Scherff must have a better game after an up-and-down showing in Miami. However, left guard Ezra Cleveland and center Mitch Morse held their own against the Dolphins and can build upon their performances this week.

Tackles Cam Robinson and Anton Harrison will have a lot on their plate Sunday, but another solid day from these five linemen could signal success for the Jaguars in Week 2.

Jacksonville’s skill players vs. Cleveland’s back-seven

Once again, the Jaguars’ group of offensive skill players will face another tough secondary only this time on their home turf.

The Browns have a defensive unit that allowed a negative .20 expected points added (EPA) per play allowed. Their back seven is led by star linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward with more quality defenders roaming the second and third level.

For most teams, including Jacksonville, facing Cleveland’s back seven is a tall task. Nevertheless, the Jaguars have last week’s first-half performance to go off of when it comes to taking on other stout back seven defenders.

Rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. must be a focal point Sunday. The offense was humming when he was being targeted and he adds a level of explosiveness and playmaking ability this unit has not had in quite some time. His zero targets in the second half were inexcusable.

This weekend could be a good time for the Jaguars to deploy Evan Engram into the passing game in his new versatile role as the F-move tight end and fullback. He could be the X-factor against a tough Browns secondary.

Finding explosive plays and getting the ball to the team’s best playmakers will be another crucial aspect in their pursuit of a home-opener victory.

Browns still without four key players with Cowboys just six days away

The Browns are still without key starters just six days before their season opener.

As the Cleveland Browns get set to take on the Dallas Cowboys in their Week 1 matchup, they were without a handful of starters in practice on Monday. This included left tackle Jedrick Wills and kicker Dustin Hopkins.

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported the following players are not practicing Monday for the Browns in addition to Wills and Hopkins: wide receiver David Bell and defensive tackle Shelby Harris.

As Wills continues his recovery from a knee procedure, Jack Conklin will likely see some work at left tackle in his absence in preparation for Week 1 against Dallas.

Although Hopkins didn’t practice today, Kevin Stefanski mentioned he “will be fine” according to ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi. Hopkins was active in the preseason and remains the only kicker on the roster or practice squad at the moment, so he should be expected to suit up until further notice.

In other good news, Cay Kabot added defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson, and linebacker Nathaniel Watson returned to practice Monday. Jefferson signed a one-year deal with the Browns in free agency and will likely be the starting three-technique alongside Dalvin Tomlinson.

Browns DT Shelby Harris dealing with undisclosed injury, left The Greenbrier early

The veteran defensive tackle is working through some things.

The Cleveland Browns are coming off of a season where they dealt with an unbelievable amount of injuries that somehow did not derail their season. And they have already been hit with a few through the first week of training camp, including defensive tackle Shelby Harris.

According to Cleveland dot com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the defensive tackle is dealing with an undisclosed injury and headed back to the team facility early from The Greenbrier to get it checked out.

Signing a new two-year deal with the Browns after a successful season as a rotational interior defender in 2024, the team and defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will need his big man back. In the meantime, rookie Mike Hall Jr., who also missed a day of practice, will get plenty of opportunity to prove he can step up right away in Year 1.

With five weeks until the start of the regular season, the Browns and Harris still have plenty of time to get healthy. Besides, this isn’t Harris’ first rodeo as he enters his tenth NFL season.

Browns Podcast: 2024 season prop bet and defensive tackle room review

The Browns defensive tackle room is a strong unit

Only a couple of weeks remain in the off-season before the team reports for training camp and practices for the 2024 season begin. Our friends over at BetMGM have released many of their prop bets and have some interesting lines for the Browns.

We also continue our position review series for the Browns, turning to one of the most improved units in the defensive tackle room over the last couple of years. The group is headlined by two experienced three-down veterans, Dalvin Tomlinson and Shelby Harris.

Overall, the pass rush ability of Quinton Jefferson, Mike Hall Jr., and Maurice Hurst II, mixed with Tomlinson and Harris, creates a formidable group. If the offense can carry some leads into the fourth quarter and let the defensive line pin their ears back and attack the quarterback, it will be a tall task to come back against Cleveland.

Browns: Shelby Harris is not a fan of proposed off-season schedule change

Harris is strongly against the proposed changes

On Tuesday, the NFL Players Association’s proposal to alter the off-season workout schedule as early as next year in 2025 was reported. And Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Shelby Harris is not a fan.

The proposal would eliminate voluntary and mandatory OTA practices and just extend training camp, with a ramp-up starting in mid-June or the beginning of July. Harris reacted on social media with several different tweets opposing the proposal.

“I’m so confused how they are trying to twist this into saying players want to start camp the end of June, nobody wants anything to do with this change”
As someone outside looking in on this, the proposal doesn’t make much sense to me. The idea of training camp being nearly three months straight doesn’t seem to benefit anyone players, coaches, or front office personnel.
There haven’t been many people on social media who seem to be in favor of this proposal, so if I had to guess, it wouldn’t be passed and implemented.
