Ohio State football class of 2023 scouting report: Calvin Simpson-Hunt #GoBucks

The Ohio State football recruiting class of 2023 is complete and despite some murmurs of negativity in the crowd, this class is fantastic from top to bottom. One of the studs of this class is a four-star cornerback out of Texas, Calvin Simpson-Hunt.

Hunt is widely viewed as a top 90 prospect in the class of 2023 and a top ten cornerback in the class. The defensive backfield is a bit of a question mark considering how lackluster they were last season, but Simpson-Hunt has the skills to see the field early and often, and we will explore why below.

Patriots list seven inactives, including four starters, for Sunday’s game vs Dolphins

The Patriots will be dangerously thin at the cornerback position.

The New England Patriots will be dangerously thin at the cornerback position when heading into a must-win game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Even without Tua Tagovailoa under center at quarterback, the Dolphins will still have the luxury of Teddy Bridgewater throwing to elite speedsters at receiver with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Meanwhile, the Patriots will be without Jalen Mills and Marcus Jones.

It’s a big problem considering rookie cornerback Jack Jones went on injured reserve on Saturday.

The good news for the Patriots is they’ll be getting running back Damien Harris back. So they’ll have their two-headed monster in the offensive backfield with the former University of Alabama product and Rhamondre Stevenson carrying the ground load.

The Patriots will also catch a break with the Dolphins missing multiple key players as well.

Along with Tagovailoa, both tackles Eric Fisher and Terron Armstead have been ruled out for the game. The team will also be without veteran pass-rusher Bradley Chubb and defensive standout Xavien Howard.

Secret Superstars for Week 2 of the 2022 NFL preseason

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar names the most impactful under-the-radar performers in Week 2 of the 2022 NFL preseason.

There are those who will tell you that preseason games don’t matter — they are useless to analyze, as you have starters going against starters in relatively vanilla schemes, or backups going against backups; most of whom won’t be playing in the NFL when the regular season starts.

When you peel back to the truth past that hyperbole, there’s a lot more to it than that. The story in the middle of that is a huge ball of players who are either trying to establish themselves as potential starters, or are trying to save their careers in short spaces of time. What you’re looking for is how people fit into teams and schemes, or not.

And that’s why preseason performances actually do matter — they set the tone for the regular season more often than you may think.

Here are our Secret Superstars for Week 2 of the full 2022 preseason — the guys who stood out above the rest. These are not recent first-round picks, or lead-pipe locks to make a roster; these are the guys fighting for every bit of starting opportunities.

WATCH: Patriots CB Shaun Wade takes flight for ridiculous interception

Shaun Wade showed off some acrobatics for this interception.

On a preseason night where defenses ruled, Cornerback Shaun Wade recorded an interception in a key moment of Friday’s game between the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers.

The interception concluded a three-play 19-yard drive for the visiting Panthers. Quarterback PJ Walker threw a pass intended for wide receiver Derek Wright, and it landed in the arms of Wade, who is in his second season with the Patriots with the organization looking to build up depth in the secondary.

The ensuing drive did not lead to points. However, it gave fans a glimpse of Wade’s ability as a defensive back.

It will be intriguing to see if Wade can make a further impact for the Patriots as they prepare for their third and final preseason game.

Patriots WR N’Keal Harry, CB Shaun Wade among inactives vs. Panthers

N’Keal Harry and Shaun Wade are the key inactive players for the Patriots in Week 9.

On Friday, the New England Patriots had 13 players listed as questionable for the Week 9 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Key players like Nick Folk and Jake Bailey, along with a slew of defensive starters were looking shaky to be active against Carolina.

New England announced the inactive players ahead of the game and the team is fairly healthy in comparison to the lengthy injury report heading into the weekend. N’Keal Harry (knee) and Shaun Wade are the key names that will miss the Week 9 matchup.

Devin Asiasi, Ronnie Perkins, Yasir Durant and J.J. Taylor are the other players who were listed inactive.

Christian McCaffrey and Sam Darnold are active for the Panthers.

Former Ravens FB/TE Ben Mason signs with Patriots’ Practice Squad

The Ravens saw another one of their 2021 fifth-round selections move to New England

The Baltimore Ravens rarely move on from rookies that they draft. They trust their decision makers to select talent that can contribute early on as well as grow, and throughout their franchise history they’ve been able to do that. However, not every pick is perfect, and certainly not every selection pans out.

After trading away rookie cornerback Shaun Wade to the New England Patriots in exchange for multiple draft picks, Baltimore saw New England take another one of their 2021 selections, although this time it wasn’t a mutual agreement.

The selection of Mason was a questionable one from the start. It’s fair to wonder how many other teams liked the fullback and were ready to take him after Baltimore’s selection at No. 184, but the fact that he passed through waivers unclaimed tells a lot in that regard.

It was hard to justify the Ravens keeping Mason on the roster, as he and fellow fullback Patrick Ricard are very similar players. With how much depth Baltimore needed at other positions, there just wasn’t room on the final team for the rookie.

The Ravens would have probably loved for Mason to be a part of their practice squad, so the fact that it looks like he spurned Baltimore to go to the Patriots probably stings. In fact, head coach John Harbaugh did not sound happy after practice on Wednesday when asked about Mason.

The whole Mason situation was an odd one from the start. However, the team saw a talented player that they felt could contribute. It’s safe to say it didn’t work out that way, and the pick could have probably been used in a better way. Despite that, Mason most likely wasn’t going to contribute on the field a lot during the 2021 season, and if needed, the Ravens can find another quality fullback elsewhere.

Ravens reportedly trade OL Greg Mancz to Dolphins in deal that involves pick swap

The Ravens reportedly traded OL Greg Mancz to the Dolphins in a deal that involves a late-round pick swap

The Baltimore Ravens will be saying farewell to quite a few players in a short amount of time as cut down day quickly approaches. However, the team has made a few trades over the last couple of days that have netted them draft compensation for people who would not have made their final roster.

On Saturday, Baltimore reportedly traded offensive lineman Greg Mancz to the Miami Dolphins in a deal that includes a late-round pick swap. The move comes on the heels of another trade made by the team a few days ago, as they traded rookie cornerback Shaun Wade to the New England Patriots in exchange for two draft selections.

In the past three days, the Ravens have acquired a 2022 sixth-round pick and a 2023 fifth-round selection for two players who likely would have been cut during final roster trim downs. It’s great value for general manager Eric DeCosta, as acquiring anything of value for a player who isn’t going to make the team is a win.

Mancz spent the first six years of his NFL career with the Houston Texans before signing a reserve/futures deal with Baltimore in January. He was competing for one of the final offensive line spots on the Ravens’ roster, but the versatile lineman couldn’t carve out a role to himself. Instead he’ll head to Miami, where he’ll seemingly play alongside another former Baltimore player in offensive lineman Matt Skura.

5 biggest winners of Shaun Wade trade for Ravens

Who were the biggest winners from the Shaun Wade trade for the Ravens?

The Baltimore Ravens shocked quite a few people when they traded rookie cornerback Shaun Wade to the New England Patriots. In return Baltimore received a 2022 7th-round pick and a 2023 fifth-round selection, electing to get compensation back for a player that most likely would not have been on their roster in a few weeks.

The Ravens’ decision to part ways with Wade had a lot to do with how many other defensive backs have stepped up during training camp and the preseason. The rookie’s departure means that those players now have an increased chance to make Baltimore’s final 53-man roster.

Below we look at five of the biggest winners for the Ravens in the aftermath of the Wade trade.

Shaun Wade has been traded to the New England Patriots

The Baltimore Ravens have traded former Buckeye Shaun Wade to the New England Patriots.

Shaun Wade’s stint as a Baltimore Raven is officially over just a few months after it began. The former Ohio State standout and fifth-round pick of this year’s NFL draft was traded to the New England Patriots today.

Wade who was once considered a first-round lock, fell after a subpar 2020 season. He signed his rookie contract with the Ravens on May 13, a four-year deal worth nearly 3.8 million.

There seemed to be a logjam of defensive backs in Baltimore and New England needed some depth in the secondary. The two teams struck a deal sending Wade to Bean Town in exchange for a seventh-round pick in 2022 and a fifth-round pick in 2023.

Even though Wade has played well during the pre-season, there was some speculation that he would not make the 53 man roster in Baltimore. So the Ravens made a move to get something instead of potentially nothing, knowing Wade would most likely not make it through waivers unclaimed. With so many defensive backs, they simply could not keep everyone.

This is a low-risk, high-reward move by the Pats. When Wade was selected, many experts thought the Ravens got a steal that late in the draft. Although it has to be difficult to be moving on just a few weeks before the season kicks off, New England may now be the one getting a bargain. There is no doubt, the former Buckeye has the potential to be a star in the NFL.
