Notre Dame linebacker makes Freshman of the Year Award watch list

More KVA hype!

Notre Dame won a massive recruiting battle in the 2024 cycle when California linebacker [autotag]Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa[/autotag] signed with the Irish.

The 6-foot, 3-inch and 240-pound star was ranked as the country’s No. 41 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. KVA had offers from every major college football power, but the Irish won the heated recruiting battle.

He enrolled in January with the objective of playing early, and was recently named as the backup Mike linebacker behind starter Drayk Bowen. The coaching staff is confident that when Viliamu-Asa’s number is called, he’ll perform at a high-level.

The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award noticed him as well, naming KVA to its preseason watch list.

It won’t surprise anyone to see Viliamu-Asa play early and often, while setting himself up for future Irish success.

Florida WR included on Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year watch list

Florida wide receiver Eugene Wilson III has made the watch list for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, becoming the first Gator to do so.

The college career of Florida wide receiver Eugene “Tre” Wilson III is set to begin on Thursday night, and the freshman pass catcher figures to work his way into a significant role with the Gators in 2023.

A former four-star recruit, according to 247Sports, Wilson is getting national recognition ahead of his first season from the Maxwell Football Club. He was named to the watch list for the sixth annual Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, becoming the first Gator to ever do so.

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Memphis running back Kenneth Gainwell, Alabama defensive end Will Anderson Jr., Georgia tight end Brock Bowers and North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye are the past winners. If Wilson won, he’d be the first receiver to claim the award.

Alexander’s watch list is 37 players deep to start the season. Notable names other than Wilson, include Colorado cornerback Cormani McClain — who was committed to Florida before flipping — and Nebraska edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen, who is the brother of Florida starting JACK Princely Umanmielen.

Of course, Alabama and Georgia have multiple players featured on the list. That tends to happen when bringing in the nation’s top-ranked recruiting classes.

Wilson will need to perform extremely well to finish on top of this talented watch list, and it all starts with his debut against Utah on Thursday night.

Ohio State football has two Freshman of the Year finalists

Do you think one of the two should win the award? #GoBucks

Most of the 2021 individual college football awards have been spoken for, but there are still a few out there. In fact, Ohio State has two of the five finalists up for the fourth annual Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. Those two players are, of course, quarterback C.J. Stroud and running back TreVeyon Henderson. OSU is the only school with more than one finalist named.

Besides being named a Heisman Trophy finalist, Stroud threw for 3,862 yards and 38 touchdowns in the regular season as a redshirt freshman in 2021. He ranks in the top 10 nationally in eight major statistical categories, including passer efficiency (second, 182.2), yards per game (fourth, 351.1), touchdown passes (fifth, 38), and completion percentage (sixth, 70.9).

As a true freshman, Henderson rushed for 1,165 yards and scored a school freshman-record 19 touchdowns. Against Tulsa on Sept. 18, he broke Archie Griffin’s 49-year-old single-game freshman rushing record when he finished with 270 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns. A native of Hopewell, Virginia, Henderson also added 23 receptions for 285 yards and four touchdowns.

The award will be presented at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala in January. Winners will be chosen from Stroud, Henderson, and three other finalists: Brock Bowers, a tight end at Georgia; Xavier Worthy, a wide receiver at Texas and Braelon Allen, a running back at Wisconsin. Past winners of the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year award include Trevor Lawrence (Clemson, 2018), Kenneth Gainwell (Memphis, 2019)) and Will Anderson Jr. (Alabama, 2020).

Three Ohio State players named as semifinalists for Freshman of the Year

Three (count ’em) Buckeyes are among the 14 semifinalists for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. #GoBucks

We always knew Ohio State was a young team this season, but still a talented one. The Buckeyes may have fallen short of their ultimate goals of winning the Big Ten and making the College Football Playoff, but the future is still bright.

Look no further for proof than the fact that Ohio State leads all programs with three semifinalists for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award.

On Thursday, the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia announced the fourteen semifinalists and a trio of Buckeyes make up more than 1/5 of the list. The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award has been presented to the College Freshman Player of the Year since 2018 and is named in honor of Shaun Alexander, a former standout at the University of Alabama and with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL.

No Buckeye has ever won the award. Three finalists for the award will be unveiled on December 21, 2021. From there, the winner of the award will be announced on Monday, January 10, 2022, with a formal presentation taking place at Harrahs Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 18, 2022.

Here are the three Ohio State finalists for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award with bios of each thanks to a release from the Ohio State football program.

Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams named a national freshman of the year semifinalist

Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams was named as one of the 14 semifinalists for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award.

Oklahoma true freshman quarterback Caleb Williams was announced as one of 14 semifinalists for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. The award is presented annually to the outstanding freshman player in college football by the Maxwell Football Club.

Williams started six games for the Sooners. The Washington, D.C., native completed 62.5 percent of his passes and has thrown for 1,670 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns and just four interceptions.

Williams was the hero in Oklahoma’s annual rivalry game against Texas. In the Red River Showdown, Williams replaced Spencer Rattler and passed for 212 yards and a pair of touchdowns to help rally the Sooners back from an early 28-7 deficit. Williams also had a 66-yard rushing touchdown against the Longhorns in OU’s 55-48 comeback victory.

Against Texas Tech, Williams became just the third quarterback in Oklahoma history to pass for six touchdowns with no interceptions in a single game. Williams ended that day versus the Red Raiders with 402 passing yards.

One of Williams’ other highly-efficient days came against TCU. Against the Horned Frogs, Williams tossed four touchdown passes on 18-of-23 passing for 295 yards.

Then, against Kansas, Williams took the football away from redshirt junior running back Kennedy Brooks on a 4th-and-1 snap and scampered five yards to help preserve an eventual 35-23 victory over the Jayhawks.

Williams nearly engineered a late Bedlam comeback in the final minute. Similar to other heroics throughout the season, Williams broke free for a 56-yard run to the Oklahoma State 24-yard-line.

However, after three straight incompletions, Williams was sacked by Oklahoma State’s Collin Oliver and the Cowboys topped Oklahoma in Bedlam, 37-33, to end the Sooners’ string of six consecutive Big 12 championships.

Now, with Oklahoma still in the midst of a head coaching search, the question is whether or not Williams will be a part of the future for Oklahoma. Sooner fans would certainly love for Williams to stay.

So far, all anybody really knows about whether or not Williams will stay or go is based on what he’s shared across social media.

Williams tweeted this on Sunday after the news that Lincoln Riley was leaving Oklahoma to become USC’s new head coach.

“I appreciate all the concerns about the situation but I am also happy for Coach Riley, mama Riley, Sloan and Stella for that huge opportunity ahead. That’s all I plan to say right now! #boomer.”

Williams attended Oklahoma basketball’s 74-67 win over No. 14 Florida and received one of the loudest applauses of the night when he was shown on the scoreboard. Still, what his future holds remains to be seen.

Michigan State football LB Cal Haladay named to Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year watch list

Cal Haladay has been a huge surprise this season for Michigan State football. The farm-raised linebacker who doesn’t wear any gloves, arm wraps or anything has come out of nowhere this year to help lead the Spartans’ defense, and his stellar play could earn him some hardware at the end of the season.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Haladay has made the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year watch list. This will be the fourth year of this award.

Haladay will go up against star players like C.J. Stroud, TreVeyon Henderson and more for the honor.
