The pushing and shoving began in Turn 1 on the first lap of the double overtime attempt in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Circuit of The Americas. Austin Hill was the instigator, pushing Shane van Gisbergen toward the first turn and eventually pushing him out of the way to the race lead. A lap later, van Gisbergen did some pushing of his own on Hill’s back bumper and even caved in the nose of his Kaulig Racing Chevrolet.

Neither driver went to victory lane. Kyle Larson took advantage of their disagreement and drove past both of them, while van Gisbergen got the best of Hill off the final turn to cross the finish line second (before being penalized 30 seconds for cutting the course). Hill still seemed upset after the checkered flag, but eventually cooler heads – even if their views differed – prevailed by the time the field parked on pit road.

It was van Gisbergen’s first feud, if that’s even the right way to describe it, since coming to NASCAR.

“That last restart, he just drove through me at (Turn) 1,” van Gisbergen told Fox Sports. “Yeah, I guess that’s how it is here. I just stood up for myself.”

Because van Gisbergen had a smile on his face, it was hard to tell how upset he truly was at the incident. But that’s what makes van Gisbergen such a fascinating character and a breath of fresh air in the NASCAR world.

He’s always smiling and seemingly having fun, whether it’s Superspeedway racing at Daytona, hybrid racing at Atlanta, experiencing the effects of aero at Las Vegas, giving an interview outside the infield care center, or answering any question thrown his way (including repeated ones about his transition to NASCAR) – van Gisbergen even smiles when facing cameras about having to get physical on the racetrack.

It’s a welcome sight and adds to the van Gisbergen experience. This time one year ago, van Gisbergen wasn’t even a thought in the NASCAR space, and he isn’t supposed to be here in the capacity that he is. Winning on the streets of Chicago with Trackhouse Racing last summer changed his career while giving NASCAR and its fans someone new to be fascinated with.

There is no denying van Gisbergen is delivering. There hasn’t been a return trip to victory lane yet, but he is quickly taking to his new environment. He earned three top-12 finishes in his first four races, and it would have been five had it not been for the penalty Saturday at Circuit of the Americas.

There is no reason not to want to watch van Gisbergen. No one can deny his talent or resume: van Gisbergen is a three-time Australian Supercars champion and a winner of the Bathurst 1000. He is fully capable of getting the job done in NASCAR and showcasing a new personality.

In relocating to the United States, van Gisbergen is going through a culture and career change, and he’s fully invested in everything that comes with it and embracing a new challenge. Or, as van Gisbergen is used to explaining by now, getting outside of his comfort zone and not being shy about how much fun he’s having in the process.

SVG truly is a new face in a new place. NASCAR and its fans have usually seen or heard of a driver coming through its ranks because they would have competed at one of the lower levels, or they were tabbed as a talent to watch by those who keep an eye on grassroots racing.

But van Gisbergen came out of nowhere. Not only that, but he’s also easy to like and, thus far, hasn’t had a problem putting himself out there. van Gisbergen has appeared on podcasts with Corey LaJoie and Kevin Harvick, has obliged a media center appearance nearly every weekend, and even spent time with members of the National Motorsports Press Association before the season started.

“It’s friggin’ cold,” van Gisbergen quipped at the time about one of the differences about moving.

On the food in the United States: “You can get most things here, but everything you get there’s a lot of. So, got to be disciplined, I guess.”

And the media coverage?

“It’s a lot here,” van Gisbergen said. “The questions are better.”

So, what does van Gisbergen get asked in New Zealand?

“Just the same (expletive) every time,” he said with a laugh.

Everything is roses for van Gisbergen right now in his NASCAR venture, and maybe that’ll change throughout a long season. But it sure is nice having such a “good vibes only” type of guy around.

Shane van Gisbergen’s schedule in the NASCAR Cup Series grows in 2024. Find out how many races van Gisbergen will run in the Cup Series!

[autotag]Shane van Gisbergen[/autotag] signed a developmental deal with Trackhouse Racing for the 2024 season, which features a full-time ride with Kaulig Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Additionally, van Gisbergen was announced to compete in seven races for Kaulig Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series. Now, the Xfinity Series driver has another Cup Series race on deck.

SafetyCulture announced that it will sponsor van Gisbergen in three Xfinity Series races and one Cup Series race. However, the one Cup Series race is at Daytona International Speedway in August, which was not initially on van Gisbergen’s schedule. This means he will have eight races in the Cup Series, including three superspeedway events.

This will be good experience for the New Zealand-born driver, who hasn’t competed on many oval tracks at this point in his career. The 2024 NASCAR season will be a learning experience for van Gisbergen, and competing at the top level is essential. It will be interesting to see if van Gisbergen can repeat his victory from the 2023 season in the Cup Series.

Shane van Gisbergen had a whirlwind and somewhat surreal life since July, and he’s about to take another step as the NASCAR season begins.

van Gisbergen went from being a NASCAR invader in July when he ran on the streets of Chicago with Trackhouse Racing, to being a NASCAR winner when he triumphed in that same event, to now being a full-time driver. It didn’t take long after van Gisbergen’s summer appearance for the wheels to be set in motion for him to leave Australia and Supercars to attempt a new challenge.

“It’s been huge since Chicago happened, and it’s just like the career path did 90 degrees and has gone in another direction,” van Gisbergen said this offseason during an appearance at the National Motorsports Press Association convention. “It’s pretty exciting. It’s good to have that uncertain feeling, not knowing what it’s going to be like. Am I going to be good at ovals? Am I going to fit in here?

“Being outside your comfort zone, having that anticipation and uncertainly, it’s a pretty cool feeling. I’m looking forward to seeing how I fit in.”

van Gisbergen has a full-time ride in the Xfinity series with Kaulig Racing and will also run seven Cup series races with the organization. Kaulig Racing and Trackhouse Racing are working together on van Gisbergen’s efforts.

A three-time Supercars champion, van Gisbergen was contracted for another season with Triple Eight, but the team didn’t want to stand in his way when it became clear van Gisbergen wanted to explore his options in NASCAR seriously.

Around the time van Gisbergen made his second appearance in the series at Indianapolis, things had progressed to a realistic level. What initially looked like van Gisbergen making limited starts in both the Xfinity Series and Cup snowballed into sponsors and other partners signing on for more. The plan was finally rolled out in December as van Gisbergen will run NASCAR national series races plus a slate of late model and other events.

“It’s got a little stale for me last year, and a new challenge just refreshes and excites me,” van Gisbergen said. “I really want to do my best and try and succeed at something else.”

van Gisbergen never sets expectations but hopes his experience and age will be a benefit. The 34-year-old isn’t afraid to make mistakes but knows there is a line between showing his talent and being reckless.

“(Hopefully) I can just build up as I go and get comfortable,” van Gisbergen said. “Every week, I want to learn something and get better and for sure, I’m probably going to make some mistakes and crash some cars. But I want to get better every week.

“None of it looks easy; every week is different. Every week is going to be a challenge and a study to try and understand what it’ll be like.”

The first test will be at Daytona International Speedway. van Gisbergen will be busy running both the ARCA Menards Series and the Xfinity race. The racing style is entirely foreign to van Gisbergen, and he got a taste for it during the ARCA Menards test in Daytona last month.

“It’s different; I have no idea what I’m in for,” he said. “Kevin Harvick has been really good for advice and talking about getting safe in the car and how to look around for things. But he said, ‘Just be prepared, it’s going to be the biggest hits you’re ever going to take.’ So that’s not a nice thing to hear, but it’s reality, and it’s just how it’s going to be. It’s completely different racing; you just have to get through it, trying to place your car in the right spots and survive to the end.”

There was no speaking around the fact that van Gisbergen realized in reviewing film, particularly of previous ARCA Menards races at Daytona, that there could be a lot of carnage. It brought a chuckle when asked if he had watched those races. The field will be made up of various levels of experience, including first-time van Gisbergen.

“You got to be on your toes there, it looks like,” he said. “There are just random crashes happening all the time, guys making moves being unpredictable. It looks fun until it’s not.”

Shane van Gisbergen’s plans for 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season revealed

Shane van Gisbergen’s plans for the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season have been revealed. Find out which team Gisbergen will run for in 2024!

[autotag]Shane van Gisbergen[/autotag] signed a developmental deal with Trackhouse Racing for the 2024 NASCAR season, which includes starts in different series. Most notably, van Gisbergen will run full-time in the No. 97 Xfinity car for Kaulig Racing. Now, the former Supercars Championship driver has some starts in the NASCAR Cup Series.

On Thursday afternoon, Kaulig Racing announced that van Gisbergen will make seven starts in the No. 16 Cup car in 2024. The entry has a charter and will contain part-time drivers throughout the season. Most notably, van Gisbergen will make starts in both races at Talladega, the Coca-Cola 600, and the Chicago Street Course, which is the location of his first NASCAR victory.

These are going to be very important starts for van Gisbergen as he runs his first full-time NASCAR schedule. He hasn’t competed at an oval track in the Cup Series, so earning experience at both Talladega races and Las Vegas will be good for him. In 2024, van Gibsergen will be one of the top NASCAR storylines as he looks to make a name for himself within the sport.

Kaulig Racing to field van Gisbergen’s Cup Series effort

Shane van Gisbergen’s slate of seven NASCAR Cup Series races will be with Kaulig Racing in the No. 16 Chevrolet.

“When I first started talking with Trackhouse about moving to the U.S., we had no idea how many races we could secure but I knew I wanted to be with that team and organization,” van Gisbergen said. “There has been a lot of hard work to get to this point and I could not be happier to know that I get to race for an Xfinity Series championship and then get a proper go at the Cup Series on road courses and ovals. Kaulig is a proven winner in both Xfinity and the Cup Series, and I know with the alliance with Trackhouse, this will be an incredible first year for me in NASCAR.”

It was announced in December that New Zealand’s van Gisbergen, a three-time champion in Australia’s Supercars Championship, will run a limited Cup Series schedule in addition to being full-time in the Xfinity Series with Kaulig Racing. Thursday, Kaulig Racing and Trackhouse Racing, who are working in conjunction to field van Gisbergen in his transition to full-time NASCAR competition, announced he would drive the No. 16. The car is going to be split between multiple drivers this season.

Van Gisbergen’s seven Cup Series races are:

  • Circuit of the Americas (March 24)
  • Talladega Superspeedway (April 21)
  • Charlotte Motor Speedway (May 26)
  • Chicago street course (July 7)
  • Watkins Glen (Sept. 15)
  • Talladega Superspeedway (Oct. 6)
  • Las Vegas (Oct. 20)

“I’m excited to work with Trackhouse and have Shane join our Cup program this season,” Kaulig Racing president Chris Rice said. “When we locked in SVG for the Xfinity Series, it just became a natural next step on the Cup side since we have all the existing infrastructure and a relationship with the pit crews.

“Remember, SVG had to pass our car to win the Chicago race. We finished second. So, now we get to race with him which is kind of awesome.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1428]

Van Gisbergen’s victory at Chicago came in his Cup Series debut for Trackhouse Racing. He then made the decision to leave Australia and the series to move to the United States for a NASCAR career.

“Shane is one of the best talents I’ve ever seen,” Trackhouse Racing founder Justin Marks said. “We know he will be competitive on the road courses, so we needed to challenge him and ourselves on oval tracks against Cup Series drivers. This is a big freshman season for Shane, and I really appreciate Matt Kaulig and Chris Rice for helping us bring this to life.”

Shane van Gisbergen to join Kaulig Racing for 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series season

Shane van Gisbergen will drive the No. 97 car full-time for Kaulig Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series during the 2024 season.

[autotag]Kaulig Racing[/autotag] has announced a major addition to its NASCAR Xfinity Series driver lineup for the 2024 season. [autotag]Shane van Gisbergen[/autotag] will join Josh Williams and A.J. Allmendinger as full-time drivers in the Xfinity Series. van Gisbergen will drive the No. 97 car with sponsorship from WeatherTech. This is a shocking entry to the full-time field.

After spending time in Supercars, the 34-year-old driver has come to the United States of America to pursue a career in NASCAR. van Gisbergen won in his NASCAR Cup Series debut at the Chicago Street Course with Trackhouse Racing, which sparked his desire for the sport. Now, he will be with Kaulig Racing for a full schedule in 2024.

This is a brilliant move for van Gisberge and Kaulig Racing as they want to earn experience and race wins together. It may be premature to suggest that van Gisbergen can win the Xfinity Series championship, but he will certainly make the playoffs. It will be interesting to see how Williams, Allmendinger, and van Gisbergen gel next season.

Shane van Gisbergen will begin the NASCAR-focused stage of his career as a full-time Xfinity Series driver with Kaulig Racing in 2024, in addition to running select Cup Series events.

On Wednesday, Kaulig Racing and Trackhouse Racing announced a partnership to field New Zealand native van Gisbergen in the No. 97 Chevrolet. The three-time Supercars champion landed Monday in the United States to begin his transition to stock cars.

“After winning in Chicago, I could not stop thinking about racing full-time in NASCAR,” van Gisbergen said. “I am still stunned at how quickly this has all come together. I must thank the NASCAR industry and fans for embracing me and allowing me to chase this dream. I respect every driver who has put in the work to make it to the Cup Series, and I am ready to put in that same effort. I am anxious to get started.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1428]

Van Gisbergen made his NASCAR debut in July on the streets of Chicago for the inaugural Cup Series event. Driving the No. 91 PROJECT91 entry for Trackhouse Racing, van Gisbergen went toe-to-toe with the best the series has to offer and pulled off the victory. He returned a month later to run at the Indianapolis road course and finished 10th, which was the same weekend he made his oval debut in the Craftsman Truck Series, finishing 19th at Lucas Oil Raceway Park.

The six Cup Series races van Gisbergen will run in 2024 will be split between road courses, superspeedways and intermediates. He will start his campaign at Circuit of The Americas March 24, followed by Talladega Superspeedway (April 21), Charlotte Motor Speedway (May 26), a return to the Chicago street course (July 7), Watkins Glen (Sept. 15) and Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Oct. 20).

“We know Shane will be incredibly competitive at the road course events in both the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series, but we wanted to get him as much experience on NASCAR ovals as possible, so I am really excited about his 2024 schedule,” Trackhouse boss Justin Marks said. “Kaulig Racing has a history of winning in the Xfinity Series, and as a fellow Chevrolet team, we are so thankful Matt Kaulig and Chris Rice see the potential in Shane that we see. The anticipation for this season is palpable.”

In his Xfinity Series team, van Gisbergen will be able to lean on the experience of AJ Allmendinger, another star in a different style of racing who’s found a home in NASCAR. Nigel Kinrade/Motorsport Images

In the Xfinity Series, van Gisbergen will be a teammate to AJ Allmendinger and Josh Williams. Kaulig Racing won four Xfinity Series races last season. WeatherTech will be sponsor a majority of van Gisbergen’s effort in the Xfinity Series as well as his Cup Series races.

“We started our talks with Trackhouse about the possibility of putting SVG in a Xfinity car for a few races quite some time ago, and from there the talks evolved to discussions about how much it would cost to run a full season,” said Chris Rice, president of Kaulig Racing. “Once we knew we had an open seat for next season, it became the perfect scenario to put him in the car. We partner with Trackhouse’s pit crew department, and with their key support from Chevrolet, it made teaming up an easy decision.”

Shane van Gisbergen gives big update on NASCAR future in 2024 and beyond

Shane van Gisbergen provides a big update on his future NASCAR plans in 2024 and beyond. Find out what van Gisbergen said about his plans!

[autotag]Shane van Gisbergen[/autotag] won in his NASCAR debut at the Chicago Street Course in July 2023 and it turned into a developmental deal with Trackhouse Racing. van Gibsergen will compete in select events within the top 3 levels of NASCAR while participating in some late-model races. As of November 2023, the New Zealand driver’s schedule for 2024 has yet to be determined.

However, there is one thing that is clearly on van Gisbirgen’s mind. According to Speed Cafe’s Daniel Herrero, van Gisbergen said he will do a part-time schedule of around 20 races in 2024 with eyes on becoming a full-time driver in the NASCAR Cup Series during the 2025 season. The Trackhouse Racing driver wants to compete at the sport’s top level.

As for Trackhouse Racing, there are four drivers (van Gisbergen, Ross Chastain, Daniel Suarez, Zane Smith) competing for what is expected to be three spots in 2025. It is reasonable to suggest that Smith will move over so would van Gisbergen replace Suarez? There is a lot to transpire before that point but van Gibsergen clearly knows what he wants to accomplish next.

Trackhouse Racing officially signs Shane van Gisbergen to NASCAR deal

Trackhouse Racing has officially signed Shane van Gisbergen to a NASCAR deal that will see him race in the Cup, Xfinity, and Truck Series.

[autotag]Trackhouse Racing[/autotag] announced on Wednesday night that it has officially signed [autotag]Shane van Gisbergen[/autotag] to a contract for the 2024 NASCAR season. van Gisbergen will not compete full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series but will run in the top 3 levels of the sport next year. This comes after the New Zealand native’s shocking victory in his NASCAR debut at the Chicago Street Course.

van Gisbergen will primarily run in the Cup, Xfinity, and Truck Series but could also see starts in late models and other races. Trackhouse Racing is not expected to field those entries and should partner with organizations in those series. The 2024 season will be focused on getting van Gisbergen acclimated to the oval tracks and superspeedway tracks.

Overall, this is a great move for Trackhouse Racing and one that may set them up long-term. If van Gibsergen impresses enough in NASCAR next season, the organization could buy a charter in 2025 or 2026 and field him in that entry. It will be a learning curve but van Gisbergen will be a must-watch driver every single week.
