Lions place Corey Ballentine on IR, sign Shakur Brown to practice squad

The Detroit Lions place CB Corey Ballentine on IR, sign former Michigan State CB Shakur Brown to the practice squad

The injured reserve list continues to grow for the Detroit Lions. On Friday, the team placed cornerback and kick returner Corey Ballentine on the IR with a hamstring injury.

Ballentine has not practiced this week, and the decision was made to put the young DB on the IR. In three games in Detroit, Ballentine has played exclusively on special teams. The Lions acquired him earlier this season off waivers from the New York Jets.

In practice squad roster moves, the Lions added former Michigan State cornerback Shakur Brown to the unit. To make room for Brown, who was most recently on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad, the Lions released OL Darrin Paulo from the practice squad.

Chiefs sign 3 players to practice squad, waive DT Tyler Clark

The #Chiefs added some new faces to the practice squad on Friday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made several practice squad transactions on Friday, inching one step closer to completing their 16-man practice squad.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs signed three players to the practice squad, while waiving another player. All three players had previously been reported on our practice squad tracker. The group includes former Chargers DT Cortez Broughton, former Rams LB Christian Rozeboom and former Steelers CB Shakur Brown. The team also received a roster exception for Cortez Broughton, which means he doesn’t currently count against the roster.

Broughton is a player that fans might remember from Season 1 of ‘The Franchise.’ Chiefs GM Brett Veach and his staff spent some time reviewing his tape during episode 2. Rozeboom, formerly of South Dakota State, was a standout during the preseason with the Rams. Finally, Brown was a much-sought-after undrafted free agent this past year, who fell short of expectations during the preseason in Pittsburgh.

The player waived by the Chiefs was Tyler Clark, a former undrafted free agent defensive tackle by the way of Georgia. He originally signed with Bengals, but first joined the Chiefs’ practice squad in December of 2020. He’d later sign a reserve/future deal with the team. He had a few flashy moments in preseason Week 3.

One player who was reported to be signing with the Chiefs, former Dolphins DT Benito Jones, visited the team on Friday. It’s unclear if the team intends to sign him eventually, but he was at least in town for a visit.

When Broughton’s roster exception expires, the Chiefs will officially have a full 16-man practice squad.

Former Michigan State football cornerback Shakur Brown might have not been drafted, but he will have a home at the next level for the upcoming season. On Wednesday, it came out that Brown will be joining the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad for the upcoming season.

Brown had originally been given a look by the Pittsburgh Steelers before heading to Kansas City.

The former Spartan defensive back was tied for the lead in the country with 5 interceptions in his redshirt junior season.

Michigan State fans were rightly disappointed on Saturday as they watched the team’s historic, 80-year NFL draft streak come to an end.

Shakur Brown was probably more disappointed, however, it only took him a few minutes after the draft to find his new home, the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he will be joining a fellow Spartan, Justin Layne, in the defensive backfield.

Brown will join the team as an undrafted free agent (UFA), where he could find a nice path toward playing time similar to what Justin Layne has experienced.

Lions mock draft watch: PFN creates wild 7-round Detroit mock

AJ Schulte from Pro Football Network hands in a 7-round mock draft that has many twists and turns helping the rebuild for the Detroit Lions

By now, we have so many mock draft variations in the last few months; we are ready for the real thing to happen finally. With the draft only a handful of days away, experts and analysts finalize their draft boards and take a final stab where players will land, with AJ Schulte from Pro Football Network being the latest with his in-depth 7-round mock draft.

Typically experts keep it as simple as possible considering how exhausting a 7-round mock is, but nobody told Schulte that. He came up with one of the wildest Lions mock drafts out there with not just one trade but three trades when it was all said and done that jump-starts their rebuild in a big way.

1st trade: Philadelphia Eagles send picks 12, 84, 123, and Indianapolis’ conditional second-round pick in 2022 to the Lions in exchange for pick 7, which the Eagles selected OT Penei Sewell

2nd trade: Arizona Cardinals send picks 16 and 49 to the Lions in exchange for pick 12, which the Cardinals picked CB Jaycee Horn.

3rd trade: Cleveland Browns trade WR Jarvis Landry and a fourth-round pick in 2022 to the Lions for pick 112, where the Browns select OG Robert Hainsey.

Now we have all the terms settled and picks selected; here is the Lions full haul.

1st round (16): Rashod Bateman, WR, Minnesota

2nd round (41): Jamin Davis, LB, Kentucky

2nd round (49): Spencer Brown, OT, Northern Iowa

3rd round (72): Jevon Holland, S, Oregon

3rd round (84): Rashad Weaver, EDGE, Pitt

3rd round (101): Shakur Brown, CB, Michigan State

4th round (123): Kenneth Gainwell, RB, Memphis

5th round (153): Darrick Forrest, S, Cincinnati

Acquired: WR Jarvis Landry, conditional 2022 2nd round pick, and 2022 4th round pick.

It is worth noting the conditional 2022 2nd round pick from the Eagles is from the Carson Wentz trade and could turn into a first-rounder if Wentz plays 75% of the Colts offensive snaps in 2021 or Wentz plays 70% of the Colts offensive snaps in 2021, and the Colts make the playoffs. So in this scenario, the Lions could be walking away with three first-round picks in 2022 if those terms are met.

Bateman is one of the more well-rounded receivers with his savvy route running to create separation no matter where he lines up on the field. He is NFL-built, and if it weren’t for his opt-out, we would be talking about him going higher, but just relying on 2019 tape teams are hesitant. Luckily for the Lions, they get a receiver who can instantly become a feature target and building block for the future.

Davis has seen his draft stock skyrocket after obliterating his Pro Day, showing off his superb athleticism that allows him to cover a lot of ground and wallop the ball carrier. Even though he only has one year of strong production, he has the intangibles you can’t teach and could develop into the Lions next MLB.

Spencer Brown, a natural right tackle, put his name on the map after a strong showing at the Senior Bowl, and then after putting up an insane 4.4 short shuttle at 311 pounds at his Pro Day, he is cementing his name as one of the more athletic tackles to come out of the draft. His consistency may be squirrelly at times, but his ability to mirror defenders will allow him to compete with Tyrell Crosby at right tackle.

Holland can be the next swiss army defender in the Lions arsenal, seeing time at split safety and nickel allowing him to play matchup football, which Dan Campbell looks to implement heavily. Some parts of his game will need some refinement, but he is a ball-hawk (9 ints in college), able to defend the run and pass equally, and his versatility will be heavily welcomed on the Lions defense.

Weaver is a technical pass rusher who wins with his handwork and length, not speed, and can line up inside and outside and create favorable matchups. Shakur Brown is also one of those versatile defenders who can line up outside and inside corner due to his strong instincts and play-making skills. What Forest lacks in size for safety, he more than makes up for it with heart and desire and could go from a key special teams player to a rotational role at safety.

Even though the Lions are all but set at running back this year, general manager Brad Holmes has not shied away from enhancing the room during his time with Rams, and it would show with the Gainwell selection this late in the draft. It might be overkill, but having Swift and Gainwell lined up together will create very favorable matchups as shifty, pass-catching backs giving the offense a new dynamic they can take advantage of.

As for the Landry trade, the Browns are probably not sellers when it comes down to it, but for the sake of the argument, Landry could be that strong veteran presence in the locker room. He can line up inside or outside and would fit right into the culture the new Lions regime is trying to establish in Detroit and be that bridge for the young players walking in.

The Lions were able to grab high character players who have grit, passion for football, a quality Holmes is looking for in players. Even though this mock seems off-the-wall, especially with the number of trades, it paints a picture for potential players the Lions could target and inject young talent in the roster.

Pair of Spartans listed in ‘The Draft Wire 300’ ahead 2021 NFL Draft next week

See which Spartans are expected to be drafted in next week’s NFL Draft, according to The Draft Wire of USA TODAY.

A pair of Spartans are expected to get selected in next week’s NFL Draft, according to The Draft Wire of USA TODAY.

The Draft Wire released their top 300 prospects for the upcoming NFL Draft — which begins on April 29 — and two former Michigan State Spartans were placed in this ranking. Cornerback Shakur Brown and defensive lineman Naquan Jones are the two lone Spartans in this top 300 list.

Brown is the higher of the two prospects, listed at No. 212 — which is considered a 6th round grade. Jones is not too far behind at No. 222 — which is also a 6th round grade.

The only other former Spartan I thought that would make this list was Antjuan Simmons so I’m surprised to see him left off the rankings. If Simmons were to go undrafted, he would surely be picked up as a free agent by one of the 32 NFL teams.

2021 NFL draft: 5 sleeper cornerbacks Chargers could target

The Los Angeles Chargers will go into this year’s draft, looking to bolster the cornerback room.

Every draft class includes a handful of sleepers waiting to surprise the rest of the league and force senses of regret upon the teams that passed on them.

The Chargers could take a cornerback in the early rounds, but the chances of head coach Brandon Staley wanting to build the secondary with his own guys are high. Therefore, he could choose to take more than one.

With that being said, here are five cornerbacks who aren’t receiving a lot of buzz that Los Angeles could target in this year’s draft.

Benjamin St-Juste, Minnesota

St-Juste, a transfer from Michigan to Minnesota, didn’t necessarily fill up the stat sheet. Over 18 games played between the two schools, he only logged 62 total tackles, 11 passes defensed with zero interceptions. However, the numbers don’t necessarily replicate his actual impact on the field.

Hailing at 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds with a wingspan of more than 80 inches, St-Juste uses his length and strength to his advantage to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage and at the catch point to disrupt throwing lanes. He also has fantastic agility and flexibility.

With L.A., St-Juste could be a versatile defensive back who plays on the outside and some safety. His deep speed, length and strength would carry over well as a gunner or jammer on special teams, as well.

Tre Brown, Oklahoma

Starting 33 out of 51 games, Brown made his impact as the Sooners’ outside cornerback. In four seasons, he posted 141 tackles, 31 passes defensed, 8.5 tackles for loss and four interceptions. Despite having a smaller stature at 5-foot-9 at 188 pounds, he was a shutdown outside corner over his college career.

Brown is an excellent athlete who possesses speed, explosiveness and quickness. Those traits show in press-man coverage, where uses his quick feet to mirror and break quickly with receivers at the top of the route and make plays, even against wideouts 30 pounds heavier.

With the Chargers, Brown could be a versatile corner who plays both inside or outside due to his quickness. He also has a ton of special teams experience that would serve him well in a variety of roles, whether it’s as a returner, gunner or jammer.

Shakur Brown, Michigan State

Brown burst onto the scene in 2020 for the Spartans, playing the best football of his collegiate career. The 5-foot-11 and 190-pound corner posted 25 tackles, five interceptions, four passes defended in seven games played.

Brown was one of the nation’s top playmakers, showing plus instincts, use of hands in press-man coverage, and awareness to decipher route combinations. Along with that, he does a fine job at playing with his back to the quarterback and shows good ball skills to come away with the rock.

Brown missed multiple games in 2019 due to an injury. But those concerns aside, he has key traits that can’t be taught that will allow him to rise to the top of a depth chart quickly, capable of playing inside or outside at the next next level.

Rodarius Williams, Oklahoma State

Williams, the younger brother of Browns corner Greedy, started 48 consecutive games who showed outstanding development during the course of his career, becoming one of the top corners in 2020. He finished with 27 passes defensed and two interceptions.

Standing at 5-foot-11 and 189 pounds, Williams solidified himself as one of the top corners in man coverage, showing hip fluidity, speed and short-area quickness to stay glued to receivers. While he didn’t post a lot of interceptions, Williams is always in position to make a play on the ball.

Williams does need to improve against the run, but with his skills in coverage and his traits tailor-made to be a core special teamer, he could be primed for a long and successful NFL career.

Olaijah Griffin, USC

The son of famous rapper Warren G, Griffin, a highly touted five-star recruit, played for three seasons with the Trojans. In 15 starts, Griffin accounted for 67 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 13 passes defended, and one interception.

Standing at 6-foot and 175 pounds, Griffin shows excellent athleticism, acceleration to turn and run with receivers, competitive nature & good use of hands at the line of scrimmage in press to disrupt the release, and the short-area quickness to close on receivers.

At the next level, Griffin must add some mass to his frame, improve his play strength and discipline in man coverage. But overall, his intriguing traits will enable him to become a starting corner down the road, projecting best on the outside where he can utilize his deep speed and reactive quickness.

Shakur Brown and Naquan Jones receive NFL Combine Invites

The invites to the 2021 NFL combine were announced today and CB Shakur Brown and DT Naquan Jones were the two Spartans who received invites.

[jwplayer LOzzVBvn-PROpJzTY]

The invites to the 2021 NFL combine were announced today and two Spartans were among those who were invited. Cornerback Shakur Brown and defensive tackle Naquan Jones were the two Spartans who received an invite. Although, due to COVID-19, no NFL combine will be held just like last year.

Despite the two Spartans being invited, it felt like there was one obvious snub from the invites. Senior linebacker Antjuan Simmons, who made All-Big Ten Second Team, was not invited to the combine. This comes as quite a shock considering he was one of the best Spartans on the field each game this past season. Simmons’ draft stock has been really under-the-radar despite his fantastic effort on the field. This is a solid linebacker that could eventually be a starter on an NFL team, yet he’s not getting the recognition he deserves.

This is a tremendous honor for both Brown and Jones, who look to continue Michigan State’s streak of 81 straight years of having a player selected in the NFL Draft.
