Michigan linebacker transfers to rival Michigan State

The trade for Jaden Mangham was completed in a hurry.

Consider it something of a trade.

Once upon a time, it wasn’t usual for one player to move from one side of a prominent rivalry to another. It was groundbreaking when Justin Boren left Michigan football for rival Ohio State back in 2008. But it’s now becoming a little more commonplace.

In fact, on Friday, we saw one player go from Michigan State to Michigan and another from Michigan to Michigan State.

On the heels of MSU safety Jaden Mangham committing to the Wolverines via the transfer portal, just a few hours later, Wolverines linebacker Semaj Bridgeman transferred to the Spartans.

Bridgeman is entering his second year and has a full four years of eligibility at his disposal. He’s not the first Michigan football linebacker to make his way to East Lansing in recent memory as Ben VanSumeren — who moonlighted as a tailback — also made the move to MSU following a defensive coordinator change.

In a wild day where Michigan State football fans were in uproar as they watched former starting safety Jaden Mangham transfer to Michigan, the Spartans got a player back from their rival, with linebacker Semaj Bridgeman committing to transfer to MSU from Michigan.

Bridgeman was a former 4-star recruit out of Philadelphia who will have four years of eligibility remaining.

A transfer portal linebacker from a rival school took a visit to Michigan State this past weekend.

Semaj Bridgeman — who is a Michigan Wolverines transfer — posted that he was visiting Michigan State this past weekend. Bridgeman entered the transfer portal in late April after one season at Michigan.

Bridgeman is a former four-star prospect in the 2023 class. He ranked as the No. 37 linebacker in that class.

Michigan football loses backup linebacker to transfer portal

Best of luck to him. #GoBlue

Now that spring ball is over and the transfer portal remains open for just another day (or so), we’re seeing the last hurrah of players who are choosing to try their hands elsewhere. And apparently, Michigan football isn’t immune to that.

Michigan has already lost a few surprising names — expected starting cornerback DJ Waller transferred to Kentucky, early enrollee linebacker Jeremiah Beasley and sophomore offensive lineman Amir Herring both entered the portal but have yet to commit anywhere — but hardly anyone worth panicking over at this juncture. But, the linebacker depth is thinning out with yet another transfer from the position.

Big things were expected in the future from former four-star linebacker Semaj Bridgeman from Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep. Bridgeman had been mentioned as someone who was starting to connect the dots as a sophomore, but he apparently is on his way out, having entered the transfer portal on Monday.

Bridgeman did not register any stats or snaps (according to PFF) and will have the full complement of four years available at his next school of choice. With him and Beasley gone, the Wolverines will have to look to recruit the position more heavily down the road — or attack the transfer portal, as it has the past two years bringing in Ernest Hausmann and Jaishawn Barham.

Brian Jean-Mary excited about the younger group of Michigan football linebackers

The linebacker room is much improved since Jean-Mary was last at #Michigan. #GoBlue

As new Michigan football defensive coordinator Wink Martindale has waxed ecstatic about how bright the middle of the defense is with the established players — going from the interior defensive line to the linebackers to the safeties — there will be some smaller challenges in the very middle.

The Wolverines lost the linebacker duo of Junior Colson and Mike Barrett to the NFL draft but they have a solid combination coming in to replace them in junior Ernest Hausmann and Maryland transfer Jaishawn Barham. New position coach Brian Jean-Mary is very excited to work with them, but like any defense, the maize and blue are going to need production from beyond just the starters.

Speaking to Jon Jansen on the In the Trenches Podcast, Jean-Mary broke down the players he feels are most ready to step in behind the expected starting tandem of Hausmann and Barham, noting two familiar names who have a ton of potential and have flashed but haven’t yet made names of themselves on the field.

“I can go through names, we’ve already talked about Ernest and we talked about Jaishawn, but I think Jimmy Rolder who has got some good snaps, has played in some games last year, I think he’s got a chance to be a very, very productive player,” Jean-Mary said. “Like what I’ve seen from him. We have another veteran in the room in Jaydon Hood who has patiently waited his time. I think he’s got a chance to really help us next year because he does have the experience and he’s been in some critical situations in some games, too. Those two guys are some of the older guys that played a little bit last year.”

Of course, the room is much deeper than that, and it’s continued to get deeper throughout the past few years.

For a while, the linebacker room had been bereft of elite talent, but now we’ve gotten to a point where we start to forget about four-stars and high three-stars because they’ve had to wait their turns behind players such as Colson and Barrett.

Jean-Mary went on to discuss the rest of the room, noting that there’s a lot of talent that he predicts could find themselves getting major playing time this season. Much of it will depend on spring ball and fall camp, but he likes a lot of the potential of his inherited group.

“Really excited about some of the younger kids,” Jean-Mary said. “I think Christian Boivin is a high-level special teams guy that I really think he’s going to carve his niche in that linebacker room. I know another guy that I think the fans will be excited about, has shown some flashes but has to be more consistent in Micah Pollard. He’s a great athlete, still trying to learn the linebacker position but you can see some of the growth just off tape and what I’ve seen these last couple of weeks watching him run around and being at meetings with him.

“I’d be remiss to mention some of the guys who haven’t played that are kind of newer to the program in Semaj Bridgeman and Jason Hewlett, two young guys who are very, very active. Very athletic. We’re going to throw them in the fire and see how they react this spring.

“We have two midyears that have a chance to be really, really good in Cole Sullivan and Jeremiah Beasley. We have a good group and I always try not to miss anybody. Another kid that’s been good that comes up and we’re expecting a good spring from is Hayden Moore. I think he’s got a chance to do some positive things to see if he can be one of the guys that get on the bus and help us play a high level of defense but also helps us on special teams.”

Michigan football gets four-star linebacker commit

Huge pickup for #Michigan! #GoBlue

In a week where Michigan football lost a prized linebacker commit, would it be able to secure the services of another?

Earlier in the week, four-star Raylen Wilson decommitted, with eyes on him flipping to Georgia. While it stung to lose the highest-rated commit of the 2023 class, it didn’t take long for the Wolverines to fill up the coffers with another top prospect.

Hailing from Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep Institute, 2023 four-star linebacker Semaj Bridgeman has offers from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and several other big names. He took official visits to Michigan, Georgia, South Carolina, and Rutgers, with Michigan and Rutgers appearing to stand out.

However, he committed to the Wolverines on Friday, thus giving the maize and blue another top-notch linebacker in the class with Wilson out of the fold.

Bridgeman is listed at 6-foot-2, 230-pounds, and is listed as the No. 175 player in the country, regardless of position, by ESPN. He’s considered the fourth-best in the state of Pennsylvania as well as the fourth-rated linebacker according to the ESPN300 as well.

He plays outside linebacker, tight end, and edge rusher at the high school level.

Watch his highlights below:

Four-star Semaj Bridgeman posts updates on Rutgers football official visit

Looks like Semaj Bridgeman is having a good time on his Rutgers football visit.

Semaj Bridgeman appears to be enjoying himself on his official visit, the Rutgers football recruit posting about the photo shoot on social media.

The four-star linebacker from Pennsylvania is one of the top targets for the Big Ten program. The Imhotep Institute (Philadelphia, PA) linebacker is ranked as the No. 306 recruit in the nation and the sixth-best player in Pennsylvania this recruiting cycle.

Rutgers football currently has the No. 24 recruiting class in the nation. There is one linebacker commit: Abram Wright from Fleming Island, FL. Wright committed earlier in the month following an official visit.

Alabama’s recruiting class does not yet have a linebacker and they likely will be looking to take at least two in this recruiting cycle.

Last season, they landed one linebacker, four-star Shawn Murphy (the No. 72 recruit in the nation according to 247Sports). In 2021, Alabama landed three recruits at linebacker. All three recruits were ranked four-star athletes and were top 250 in the nation according to 247Sports.

The low-key Bridgeman has been to Rutgers multiple times in different settings.
