Ranking which SEC opponents are the most intriguing for Texas

The Longhorns will be facing some of the most successful programs in college football soon.

Texas and Oklahoma are just one more season away from being members of the SEC, which means they will be ditching old rivalries and making a few new ones.

There are some programs in the SEC that Texas already has history with, others not so much. The conference as a whole was already the deepest and most talented conference in college football, but with the additions of Texas and Oklahoma it feels as if it’s the titans of the sport are all in one place.

With the SEC schedule reveal expected tonight, there have already been a few leaks as to who Texas will be playing in 2024. This has also sparked the debate as to which teams will be giving the Longhorns trouble over the next few years and/or which teams will be an easier matchup for Texas.

I decided to rank the SEC teams that will feature the most intriguing matchups for Texas when it is finally time to move on from the Big 12.

Breaking down the SEC schedule leaks, non-conference for Texas in 2024

Texas is set to travel to face Arkansas and Texas A&M, both of which last hosted games against Texas.

We have an idea of the Texas Longhorns’ first SEC schedule ahead of its release on Wednesday night. Texas looks set to face a gauntlet of rabid road environments.

According to Chip Brown of 247Sports, the Longhorns are expected to face the Georgia Bulldogs at home, with matchups against the Texas A&M Aggies and Arkansas Razorbacks on the road. So far, that’s a tough draw.

By the 2024 season, Texas hopes to be in a place where it can compete with the league’s best teams. Albeit, given what Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is building, the bout between the Bulldogs and Longhorns would seem to heavily favor Georgia.

Arkansas and Texas A&M stand as perhaps the most rabid environments Texas will face in its new conference. LSU would probably make for the third most raucous for the Longhorns in the new league. Brad Crawford of 247Sports is predicting that Texas will face the trifecta on the road in 2024.

Here’s what we think we know about Texas’ schedule in its first SEC season.

Greg McElroy eviscerates Aggies over rivalry feud with Longhorns

Greg McElroy calls out Texas A&M for “inferiority complex” in schedule dispute with Texas.

The rest of the college football world is catching up to Texas A&M’s antics in regard to the Texas Longhorns joining the Southeastern Conference. Several national sports analysts are weighing in on the Aggies’ reluctance to accept their former rivals into the league.

Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy isn’t impressed with Texas A&M’s temperament in its scheduling dispute with Texas. He said the following of the Longhorns’ Lone Star Showdown rivals.

“Stop playing this inferiority complex. Stop. Here’s what I would say if I were Texas A&M: I would say anytime, any place, anywhere we’ll play the Longhorns, we’re just glad to have the rivalry back. And we’ll stomp on them when we get our opportunity.”

For a school that has an entire song dedicated to “sawing varsity’s horns off” one would think they would relish the opportunity to face the Longhorns on the football field.

Given the direction of both programs, it’s doubtful that Texas A&M would “stomp on” Texas with its on-field play. We’ll soon have a better idea of the tone of the rivalry if it renews in the 2024 season.

Constructing a potential eight-game SEC schedule for Texas in 2024

Texas’ 2024 SEC schedule could bring an exciting matchup every Saturday.

Texas is going to face an eight-game SEC schedule in 2024. We eagerly await the announcement of which teams the Longhorns will face.

Based on recent comments by SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, we expect to know who the team will play by mid-June. Sankey implied that the conference would announce the scheduled opponents without date designations on the SEC Network on June 14.

There are several matchups we look forward to watching ahead of the team’s transition to its new league. Former conference battles with Arkansas, Missouri and Texas A&M are likely to be renewed sooner than later.

Potential budding rivalries also come to mind as Texas is set to share a league with several teams who have competed for and won national championships. Games against LSU, Tennessee, Florida and Auburn should add plenty of excitement for season ticket holders looking to attend high profile games.

Here’s an idea of what the Texas schedule could look like after the anticipated announcement date on June 14.

Texas to play an eight-game SEC schedule in 2024

We should know Texas’ 2024 conference opponents in an SEC Network schedule reveal on June 14.

The SEC announced this week that it would continue to play an eight-game conference schedule in 2024. That’s not great news for the Lone Star Showdown as an annual rivalry.

Under the eight-game format, the league is expected to feature one protected rival while facing the rest of the SEC every other year. That means Texas would have to choose between Oklahoma and Texas A&M as its featured rival.

It’s clear which rivalry would win out in that battle. Red River is certainly the more important rivalry, so Texas vs A&M would likely be relegated to an every-other-year scheduled matchup. The Aggies have also developed a strong border rivalry with the LSU Tigers over the past few seasons.

It’s possible the teams could still play annually. If the conference were to allow it, Texas could schedule A&M as an out-of-conference game. Unfortunately, that would put the teams at a disadvantage with the rest of the league likely scheduling a late season tune-up game in that place.

We expect to know more about who Texas will play in its first season in the league on June 14. After SEC commissioner Greg Sankey hinted at a schedule reveal, Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman reported that the 2024 scheduled opponents will be announced without specific dates on the SEC Network. Texas will face its last Big 12 schedule in 2023.

Bad News, Aggies: Texas as permanent rival coming to theater near you?

Nick Saban talks like the SEC is set on three permanent rivals.

A three permanent rival model looks imminent in regards to SEC scheduling in the future, and Texas will likely be on Texas A&M’s annual schedule. Continue reading “Bad News, Aggies: Texas as permanent rival coming to theater near you?”

Texas could face 8-game SEC schedule with one permanent rival

The SEC considers only having one annual conference rival for each team.

Texas Football: What makes the SEC a unique challenge for Texas

Looking at what will make the SEC a tough adjustment for Texas.

Times are changing on the Forty Acres. As of 2024, the Texas Longhorns will be members of the Southeastern Conference. It will be a challenge unlike any Texas has faced.

Barry Switzer outlined how difficult winning will be for Oklahoma in its new conference. Texas will have an equally difficult challenge on its hands in the new league.

After adding Oklahoma and Texas, the SEC will have three traditional blue-blood programs. Alabama has the most hardware of the three.

The challenge of the SEC isn’t so much the middle as it is the top half. Just under what are typically considered the blue bloods is a tier dominated by SEC teams. Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Florida and Auburn might find themselves just shy of blue-blood status, but they have the potential and some of the hardware to compete with college football’s best.

The Tennessee Volunteers boast six national championships all time. Georgia, LSU, Florida and Auburn have played in a combined 11 national championship games since 2003.

At it’s peak, Texas can compete with anyone. Nevertheless, Longhorns will need to raise their game to climb to the top of their new conference.
