If all of the Power Five conferences go to a conference-only college football schedule – like the Big Ten and Pac-12 will do – here are 20 potentially great matchups

As the man said, always look on the bright side of life.

If there really is college football in 2020, the potential is there for one of the coolest seasons ever – if you’re a fan of a Power Five conference.

And why? All of a sudden, we might get a whole slew of great conference matchups that weren’t going to happen had the season gone off like normal.

Oh sure, your athletic department is totally screwed if you’re in the FCS, and the Group of Five programs – American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt – are going to take a massive hit, but let’s table the cataclysmic side of things for another time.

For now, just enjoy the flower growing through the gigantic pile of (bleep).

In an attempt to control protocols, schedules and pandemic guidelines – and, if you’re cynical, to not have to pay those Group of Five and FCS programs in non-conference games that won’t have fans in the stands to generate any revenue – it’s possible that all Power Five conferences will go to a conference-only football schedule for just this one year.

The Big Ten and Pac-12 have already decided to go there, and while the ACC and SEC are still figuring it out, and the Big 12 is still waiting and seeing what the options are, be shocked if everyone doesn’t make the move.

Yeah, it stinks to miss out on Ohio State vs. Oregon and Alabama vs, USC, but think of what we’re possibly getting with a world without fluffy tune-ups or cupcakes.

All ten teams in the Big 12 already play the other nine, so there won’t be any new matchups, but the potential is there for a whole slew of amazing games in the other leagues.

Here are 20 potentially awesome games that aren’t currently scheduled, but could be – not all of them could happen, though – if the Power Five conferences keep things in-house.

CFN Preview 2020: Previewing all 130 teams

20. Louisville vs. Miami

Miami would LOVE to keep its conference scheduling as is with no Clemson – more on that in a moment – NC State or Louisville. The Cardinals and Canes have only played twice in ACC play – Miami won 52-27 last year – and this time around it might be an even more fun offensive shootout.

19. Stanford vs. Utah

Stanford catches a huge, huge break by not getting Utah from the South – Arizona State is the other team missed. For a team looking to bounce back from a clunker of a 2019, somehow not getting the Utes would be a huge help.

If Stanford really is back to form, Utah would get the gut-punch of having to play a strong Cardinal team along with Oregon if the conference goes to an 11-game format.

CFN Preview: Ranking all head coaches by conference

18. Arizona State vs. Washington

The last two games were close, but these two didn’t play last season. This year, this might be an elimination game – if they play – considering all the big things ahead for both of them.

As it currently stands, Washington misses the Sun Devils and UCLA – it would rather have the Bruins if they had the choice.

17. Clemson vs. North Carolina

Clemson 21, North Carolina 20. Can we have the same sort of thrill ride the 2019 game was? Please?

The Tar Heels are also supposed to miss Florida State, Louisville, Syracuse and Wake Forest. Considering them peeved if out of all those teams, they get Clemson again.

CFN Preview: ACC Preseason Rankings

16. Florida State vs. Virginia Tech

This feels like one of those pecking-order-behind-Clemson games that needs to be played.

It would be a huge moment for the Mike Norvell era at FSU with a win, and a bad look for the Coastal if the Hokies dropped this. No matter what, a slew of narratives would come from it.

Virginia Tech won the 2018 season opener 24-3, but the previous meeting was in 2012. The two have only played three times since 2008, and once was a fun 44-33 Hokie win in the 2010 ACC Championship.

A look at Georgia’s possible SEC conference-only 2020 schedule

With the SEC possibly switching to a conference-only schedule in the fall, here’s what it may look like.

Despite the Big Ten announcing that it has cancelled all non-conference football games for the 2020 season, and with the ACC and Pac-12 expected to follow suit, as of date, neither the SEC or Big-12 conferences have made any indications they will follow the Big Ten lead.

Assuming the SEC and Big-12 decide later this month to transition to the conference-only model, what would Georgia’s possible schedule look like? The Bulldogs would need to replace non-conference games versus Virginia, East Tennessee State, Louisiana-Monroe and Georgia Tech.

As usual, Georgia has each of the other six SEC East teams on the schedule plus SEC West powers Alabama and Auburn. The Dawgs also have an October 24 open date which will provide some flexibility. Would it be possible to have a full 12-game schedule by adding four more SEC West teams?

Before we move on to manipulating the schedule, it would simplify things greatly if the SEC and ACC allowed each team to keep one inter-conference game on the schedule. This would preserve the Georgia- Georgia Tech game, Florida-Florida State, Clemson-South Carolina, the Mississippi State-NC State matchup, Auburn-North Carolina and Kentucky-Louisville contest, thus alleviating a logistical logjam in the scheduling process. Especially since most of these games are traditional, season-ending, in-state rivalries, team travel would be minimized and bring a sense of normalcy to the state of current events.

As of now, Georgia is to open with Virginia on September 7 in Atlanta’s Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic. Texas A&M is to host Abilene Christian and Ole Miss plays non-conference Baylor in Houston during Week 1.  Let’s pencil in the Aggies for Atlanta, which would soften the loss of a home game for A&M by still being a significant payday and provide a much more entertaining contest. We need to save Ole Miss for later in the schedule.

On September 12, Georgia is scheduled to entertain East Tennessee State in Athens. Arkansas is travelling to Notre Dame that same afternoon for a non-conference game. Slot the Razorbacks in Sanford Stadium, which would be a more entertaining game for DawgNation and former Georgia offensive line coach Sam Pittman’s SEC coaching debut.

After Georgia’s September 19th game at Alabama, the Dawgs return to the Classic City and host Louisiana-Monroe on September 24. Mississippi State is scheduled to play non-conference Tulane in Starkville taht weekend. Starkville vs Athens? No brainer…Hail State travels to Sanford Stadium.

After three more consecutive conference games, Georgia has an open date during Week 8. Ole Miss is to host the American Athletic Conference’s UConn Huskies in Oxford on that Saturday. Instead, the Rebels travel to Athens for a date ‘Between the Hedges’.

The following week, Georgia travels to Jacksonville for the annual ‘Cocktail Party’ on October 28 and will end the regular season on November 21 in Kentucky.

That gives Georgia a full slate of 12 regular season games, including 6 home games and two neutral site contests. It will be strange to see Georgia Tech off the schedule, but as previously stated, maybe the SEC and ACC will be able to get together on a one-game exception for inter-conference scheduling.

Over the years, SEC and Georgia fans have been clamoring for more challenging schedules against Power 5 conference schools. Kirby Smart has greatly upgraded the future Georgia schedule – this would be a prelude to what fans can expect. Our proposed 2020 schedule would be loaded and present an array of weekly, compelling matchups. In addition, with the possibility of fans being excluded from the stadiums, television will need marquee matchups to keep regional and national audiences tuned in. It’s possible that two 9-3 teams could meet in the SEC championship game.

Here’s our proposed 2020 schedule.

Sept. 7 Texas A&M (Atlanta)

Sept. 12 Arkansas

Sept. 19 @ Alabama

Sept. 26 Mississippi State

Oct. 3 Vanderbilt

Oct. 10 Auburn

Oct. 17 @ Missouri

Oct. 24 Ole Miss

Oct. 31 Florida (Jacksonville)

Nov. 7 @ South Carolina

Nov. 14 Tennessee

Nov. 21 @ Kentucky

20 for 2020 College Football Topics, No. 17: The letdown or sandwich game for every Power Five team.

They’re the games that all fans blow off, but all coaching staffs lose sleep over.

For the most part, they’re supposed to be sure-thing wins, but they’re the ones that don’t always get the full and undivided attention of the supposedly superior team.

They’re the letdown games, or they’re the sandwiches – the games in between the two supposedly more important, bigger battles.

On each Power Five team’s slate, there’s at least one game that will be a moment to mail it in, but it could also be time to worry a bit.

More often than not there’s not a problem – they’re the easier games for a reason. However …

You’ve been warned.

ACC ATLANTIC

Boston College Eagles

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Holy Cross, Oct. 31
Game Before: at Virginia Tech
Game After
: at NC State

Of course Boston College is going to roll past the Crusaders – it had better. With Clemson, Louisville and at Virginia Tech before, and road games at NC State and Florida State after, this is the only relative breather.
Full Schedule Analysis

Clemson Tigers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: The Citadel, Nov. 14
Game Before: at Notre Dame
Game After
: at Wake Forest

Here’s the problem – there aren’t enough tough games on the slate for this loaded team to make anything a true letdown game, but dealing with the Citadel option offense will be annoying coming off the showdown in South Bend.
Full Schedule Analysis

Florida State Seminoles

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Pitt, Oct. 31
Game Before: at Louisville
Game After
: at Miami

This is when the Noles are in the dog days of the season. They’ll have to deal with the likely shootout against Louisville on the road, and the showdown against Miami – the pivotal moment in the 2019 season for the program – is coming up. They have to take care of home against the Panthers.
Full Schedule Analysis

Louisville Cardinals

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Wake Forest, Nov. 14
Game Before: at Virginia
Game After
: at Notre Dame

UofL can’t take anyone lightly quite yet, but this should be a stronger Year Two under Scott Satterfield. It’ll have a fun few weeks including a date at Virginia before hosting Wake Forest, but one eye will likely be on the late-season showdown on the trip to South Bend.
Full Schedule Analysis

NC State Wolfpack

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Duke, Oct. 10
Game Before: Florida State
Game After
: at Clemson

Considering the Wolfpack start the season at Louisville, the pressure could be on in October. The Florida State game is a must after getting rocked in last year’s showdown, and going to Clemson is a likely loss. There can’t be a misfire against Duke.
Full Schedule Analysis

Syracuse Orange

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Liberty, Oct. 17
Game Before: Louisville
Game After
: at Clemson

There weren’t too many problems in last year’s opener at Liberty with a 24-0 win, but this time around it’s coming off a key first half game against Louisville followed by a week off. The Orange might be looking past the Flames with the trip to Clemson to follow.
Full Schedule Analysis

Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Villanova, Sept. 19
Game Before: Appalachian State
Game After
: Notre Dame (in Charlotte)

Be very, very, very careful with this. A whole lot will be made out of the battle with a loaded Appalachian State team the week before, and the battle with Notre Dame in Charlotte is right after. This is a prime moment for what should be a strong Villanova team to come up with something big.

ACC COASTAL

Duke Blue Devils

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Wake Forest, Oct. 3
Game Before: at Pitt
Game After
: at NC State

The Blue Devils should be able to roll through the first part of the schedule, but the ACC season opens up at Pitt, and then comes the date against the Demon Deacons. There likely won’t be a lack of focus after losing 39-27 last year, but a trip to NC State is up next before dealing with North Carolina and Notre Dame.
Full Schedule Analysis

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Virginia, Oct. 17
Game Before: at Virginia Tech
Game After
: at Pitt

It doesn’t get much more sandwichey than playing between Clemson and UCF – Georgia Tech gets Gardner-Webb – but the Virginia game is even more interesting. It’s a home date between two road games on the front end against North Carolina and Virginia Tech and two right after against Pitt and Syracuse.
Full Schedule Analysis

Miami Hurricanes

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Georgia Tech, Nov. 21
Game Before: at Virginia Tech
Game After
: Duke

Throw this in the letdown category, even though the Canes lost 28-21 to Georgia Tech last year. It comes right after a run of at Virginia, Florida State and at Virginia Tech, and it’s late in the year before closing out with Duke. The Canes can’t lose focus.
Full Schedule Analysis

North Carolina Tar Heels

Letdown/Sandwich Game: James Madison, Sept. 19
Game Before: Auburn (in Atlanta)
Game After
: Georgia Tech

Oh sure, North Carolina types will say all of the right things about playing one of the stars of the FCS, but it’ll be too hard to take the lower-level team seriously after dealing with UCF and Auburn, and with the ACC season against Georgia Tech starting the week after.
Full Schedule Analysis

Pitt Panthers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Georgia Tech, Oct. 24
Game Before: Notre Dame
Game After
: at Florida State

The Panthers struggled to get by Georgia Tech last year, but they did it. Now they have to get up for them right after dealing with Notre Dame the week before and with a trip to Florida State to follow. After this, the ACC season kicks in full force.
Full Schedule Analysis

Virginia Cavaliers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: (tie) VMI Sept. 12, UConn Sept 19
Game Before: Georgia (in Atlanta)
Game After
: at Clemson

A little creative license here – call this a double-decker sandwich. No, Virginia won’t lose to VMI or UConn, but it can be forgiven for not bringing the full intensity with the season opener in Atlanta to deal with Georgia and with the ACC opener at Clemson lurking.
Full Schedule Analysis

Virginia Tech Hokies

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Duke, Nov. 21
Game Before: Miami
Game After
: Virginia

Okay, okay, Virginia Tech isn’t going to overlook Duke after getting obliterated 45-10 last year, but it’s a late-season battle in the final road game of the season. The Miami game the week before should be a big deal in the Coastal race, and then comes Virginia. After losing last year, the Hokies will be a wee bit focused on taking back the rivalry.

Texas A&M at Georgia: Preview, Prediction, SEC Football, Live Stream, TV, Channel, How to Watch

Stream Georgia vs Texas A&M Live Online.

We have a great SEC matchup on Saturday when the Texas A&M Aggies come to Sanford Stadium to take on the number four Georgia Bulldogs. With rain expected in the forecast, we should see a lot of Zamir White on the ground for Georgia so the Aggies will have to have their battle-tested defensive line ready.

SEC Football: Texas A&M (+13) at #4 Georgia

  • Date: Saturday, November 23rd
  • Kickoff: 3:30 p.m. ET

The Aggies will look to knock off a top-25 team for the first time this season, they had trouble with Alabama, Auburn, and Clemson but they have this game circled as their chance to knock Georgia out of the SEC Championship. Nothing is guaranteed at Sanford Stadium as we’ve already seen South Carolina come in there as underdogs and beat Georgia on their home field this year.

The Bulldogs will need to shut down Texas A&M’s run game and make them a one-dimensional team by flushing the pocket and making Kellen Mond throw the ball. Georgia will count on their defense once again this year to continue to hold teams to an average of 10.5 points a game. With rain in the forecast today, I don’t see them throwing the ball much which may benefit both teams as they have high powered running backs that can really kick it into high gear when needed.

Prediction: Georgia’s offense hasn’t been hot as of late and with some injuries on that side of the ball they may struggle today against a strong Aggies defense. There will be rain in the forecast so expect a lot of ground and pound running from both sides. Thirteen points is a lot of points to give Texas A&M at this point in the year. Take the under (43.5) and the points as the Aggies (+13) give the Bulldogs some tough sledding.

No. 4 Georgia is peaking at just the right time, especially after a win on the road against No. 16 Auburn. However, can Georgia keep up the same level of intensity with Texas A&M coming to town? This is the first time the two teams have met since Texas A&M joined the SEC and just the fifth time overall.

After a 21-14 win against Auburn on the road, Georgia (9-1) qualified for the SEC Championship game. Who the Bulldogs will play is still undecided. Georgia’s plan for the season has been to control the clock and the tempo of the game. That’s not going to be easy against an Aggie’s bunch that relies heavily on their running backs. Against Auburn, Bulldogs quarterback Jake Fromm went 13-for-28 with 110 yards and three touchdowns, while running back D’Andre Swift ran for 106 yards on 17 carries. Fromm is efficient, yet hasn’t thrown for more than 175 yards in three of his last four games. Against a run-heavy Aggies team, Georgia’s No. 3 ranked defense has the chance to shine. Only three teams have run for 100 yards or more against the Bulldogs.

While many think Georgia will coast into the SEC Championship game, don’t sleep on Texas A&M. The Aggies (7-3) got their fourth win in a row after a 30-6 victory vs. South Carolina last weekend, outscoring the Gamecocks 17-3 in the second half. That performance moved them to No. 24 in the country. It was an important win for A&M considering South Carolina is the only team Georgia has lost to this season. Quarterback Kellen Mond threw for 221 yards and one touchdown while running back Cordarrian Richardson tallied 130 yards on just six carries and running back Isaiah Spiller rushed for 129 yards. Over the last four games, the Aggies haven’t allowed a team to complete more than 46 percent of its passes, haven’t given up a touchdown throw in three of those four and are allowing fewer than six yards per pass.
