WATCH: Alabama basketball celebrates their SEC regular season title

Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide celebrate their SEC regular season title in the Mississippi State visitors locker room.

The Alabama men’s basketball program is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation, and is a team that’s quicky earning national recognition and respect. With the win over Mississippi State on the road last night, the Crimson Tide locked up the 2020-2021 SEC regular season title.

Head coach Nate Oats is only in his second season with the program, but is leading them to be serious contenders in March. In fact, without having coached a full season yet, with the 2019-2020 postseason being canceled due to the pandemic and 2020-2021 still ongoing, he has already earned a contract extension through the 2027 season with a sizeable raise.

Following the title-clinching win over Mississippi State, the team was waiting for their coach in the locker room with water bottles in hand.

When he came walking through the hallway, his wife, Crystal Oats, caught the celebration on camera.

Oats shared his excitement with the team, but hugged his family first.

This celebration was nearly 20 years in the making, as the Crimson Tide’s most recent SEC regular season title came in 2002.

Alabama suffers second SEC loss in ugliest game of the season

Alabama basketball is now 13-2 in SEC play after losing in a very ugly game to Arkansas on the road.

Alabama basketball is now 18-6 overall with an SEC record of 13-2 after losing on the road to Arkansas with a final score of 66-81. A win would have secured Alabama’s regular season SEC title.

The game seemed one-sided the entire time, as the Crimson Tide’s nationally-recognized defense allowed over 10 points more than their average per game.

Suffering from the three-point line hurt Alabama, as they went 11 for 33, but the real difference maker was from the free throw line.

Fans and players were visibly upset with how the game was called. The Crimson Tide only took eight free throws, of which they made three. However, Arkansas took 43 trips to the free throw line. They managed to tally 27 of their total score from the line.

Jahvon Quinerly was given a technical foul late in the second half, but the real story stems from John Petty, who received two technical fouls and was ejected from the game.

Jordan Bruner led the team in scoring with only 14 points.

Arkansas, on the other hand, had a strong offensive showing. Moses Moody was credited with 24 points for the Razorbacks, he shot only 3-12 from the field, but managed to sink 16 free throws.

Alabama will look to bounce back from this loss on Saturday, as they’ll face off against Mississippi State on the road.

Alabama MBB moves down in latest AP Top 25 poll

Alabama basketball has suffered their second loss in the last three games, which has dropped them from No. 9 al the way to No. 11.

The Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team has been trending downward since peaking at No. 9 on the Associated Press college basketball top 25.

Following a loss to Oklahoma on the road, Alabama dropped one spot to No. 10.

Now, after syffering their first conference loss on the road to Missouri, Alabama drops yet another spot to No. 11, as Missouri has now jumped eight spots to surpass the Crimson Tide. They now sit at No. 10.

Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide squad are still going to make the NCAA tournament in March, and could make a run at the SEC title. With two losses in the last three games, the team likely needs to do some adjusting.

Alabama Basketball: Tide Defeats LSU, Remains Perfect in SEC

Alabama basketball beat the LSU Tigers for the second time this season on Wednesday night, making it an 10-game SEC win streak for the Tide.

After a letdown game at Oklahoma last Saturday, the No. 7 Alabama Crimson Tide (15-4, 10-0 SEC) returned to Coleman Coliseum and picked up where they left off in SEC play. An offensive charge led by Jaden Shackelford’s 19 points led the Tide to a 78-60 victory over LSU (11-6, 6-4 SEC), to stay unbeaten in conference play.

The second meeting between rivals Alabama and LSU did not provide as many fireworks as the Jan. 19 tilt in Baton Rouge. Alabama’s John Petty did not come out of the gate by scoring 12 points in just over three minutes, nor did the Crimson Tide reach an SEC record in three-pointers. In fact, those were two factors that LSU seemed to almost erase.

Alabama connected on 23 three-pointers in last month’s game, where Petty made the first four of the game. Petty would end with 24 points, all from beyond the arc. The Tigers limited the Tide to six 3-point buckets in Wednesday’s game and held Petty scoreless in that stat line. Petty had six points, none from three-point territory.

Where Petty was silent, others Tide players stepped up.

Five members of Alabama’s squad reached double digits in scoring against LSU, led by Jaden Shackelford’s 19. The sophomore guard reached 10 points and was perfect from the stripe, connecting on four free throws. Shackelford has now scored at least 10 points in four consecutive games, and in eight of the last nine games.

Alex Reese (13), Juwan Gary (12), Jahvon Quinerly (10), and Keon Ellis (10) wrapped up the double-digit scoring for Alabama. Herb Jones led the team with eight rebounds.

LSU’s offense did not fare better in the rematch, as they shot 31% (20-65) from the field, a six percent decrease from Jan. 19. The Tigers’ offense was led by Cameron Thomas, who scored 22 and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Alabama looks to extend their 10-game conference game winning streak on Saturday, when they travel to Columbia to face the No. 17 Missouri Tigers. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on ESPN.

Georgia basketball travels to Auburn for tough test

Georgia basketball travels to The Plains of Auburn

Tuesday, the Georgia men’s basketball team will travels to The Plains for a tough game at Auburn.

The Bulldogs got blown out by Auburn just a few weeks ago in Athens, but will look to reverse course down on The Plains this time around.

Star point-guard Shariffe Cooper leads Bruce Pearl’s bunch into the matchup as a heavy favorite, though the Dawgs are coming off a big win over Ole Miss in Athens.

With a win, Georgia can re-ignite its NCAA Tournament hopes. However, a loss would all but eliminate the Dawgs without winning the SEC, due to a lack of quality wins on the season and too many losses.

The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network Tuesday at 7:00 PM.

They have not lost a game in a month and it’s beginning to garner national attention. The Crimson Tide are likely going to be dancing in March.

Texas faces historic blue blood as Big 12/SEC Challenge matchups announced

For this year’s Big 12/SEC Challenge, Texas will be facing the Kentucky Wildcats. The Longhorns will travel to Lexington on Jan. 30.

Since the 2013-2014 college basketball season, the Big 12 and SEC have faced off against each other in an annual challenge consisting of 10 games. Of the seven years, the Big 12 leads the series 4-1-2, including a tie in last year’s challenge.

For this upcoming season, Texas will be facing one of the sport’s biggest named programs in Kentucky. The Longhorns will travel to Lexington on Jan. 30.

It will be the third career meeting between the two schools and the second since the inception of the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

As usual, John Calipari’s Wildcats are going to be led by highly recruited freshman stars. The two stars are going to be two five-star shooting guards in B.J. Boston and Terrance Clarke.

Those two will be lead by four-star point guard Devin Askew out of Mater Dei High School in Pasadena, California. Askew, Boston, and Clarke are going to form one of the most dynamic young backcourts in all of college basketball.

However, the biggest question will be the eligibility of big man Olivier Sarr. The Wake Forest transfer is still waiting for a waiver approval from the SEC despite getting approval from the NCAA. If Sarr plays for Kentucky he will bring 13.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game with him.

As deep as Texas’ roster is, the matchup will be the experience of the Longhorns against the youth of the Wildcats. Texas’ one freshman on the roster, Greg Brown, chose to come to Austin instead of Kentucky and will be looking to prove that it was the correct choice.

Calipari has the upper hand over Shaka Smart when it comes to coaching but also recently hired former Texas assistant Jai Lucas. His knowledge of the ins and outs of the Longhorns will give the Wildcats that much bigger of an advantage.

All 10 Big 12 schools will be participating while four SEC teams will not play in the challenge. Here are the rest of the matchups:

  • Florida at West Virginia
  • Texas Tech at LSU
  • Kansas at Tennessee
  • Auburn at Baylor
  • Iowa State at Mississippi State
  • Alabama at Oklahoma
  • TCU at Missouri
  • Arkansas at Oklahoma State
  • Texas A&M at Kansas State
  • SEC teams not participating: Georgia, Missouri, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt

Texas is 3-4 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, getting two victories over Vanderbilt and one against Ole Miss. Kentucky, LSU has gotten one over the Longhorns, while Georgia won in Athens twice.
