Chargers claim WR Austin Proehl off waivers

The Los Angeles Chargers add another player to a deep wide receiver group.

The Chargers claimed wide receiver Austin Proehl off waivers on Tuesday.

Proehl was released by the 49ers on Monday after the team signed WR Marqise Lee.

Drafted by the Bills in the seventh-round in 2018 out of the University of North Carolina, Proehl has spent time on the practice squads of the Titans and Rams.

He has never played in a regular-season game.

Proehl also played in the XFL league for the Seattle Dragons before the league was shut down due to COVID-19, where he had 16 catches for 225 yards and was the first player to score a touchdown.

Proehl will compete for a spot on Los Angeles’ depth chart at wide receiver with Jalen Guyton, Tyron Johnson, Josh Palmer, Joe Reed, K.J. Hill, Jason Moore and John Hurst.

Former Seahawks quarterback BJ Daniels transitions into coaching

BJ Daniels, who last played for the XFL’s Seattle Dragons, will take over as the head coach of the Lincoln High School Trojans in Florida.

Former Seahawks quarterback BJ Daniels, most recently with the XFL’s Seattle Dragons, has decided to hang up his cleats in favor of a clipboard, officially accepting the position of head football coach at his alma mater, Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Florida.

Daniels played his college ball at the University of South Florida before he was drafted in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL draft by the 49ers. He ended up appearing in eight NFL games in the 2015 season, two with the Texans and six with the Seahawks – all at wide receiver.

Daniels bounced around practice squads and other professional leagues after that, eventually suiting up for the XFL’s Dragons in 2020, completing 19 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown before the league shut down early thanks to COVID-19.

“With the coronavirus situation and the fact that when I was with the XFL it closed down a lot of sports, it definitely forced my hand a little bit to pursue the career and the dream that I wanted to do,” Daniels told reporters at WTXL in Tallahassee. “Coaching is that dream and that goal. This is the first step for what I want to do and that is continue to give back and encourage the young student athletes here at Lincoln High School. Just to do what I can to give all the knowledge and information I’ve accumulated over my entire career and just pass it along.”

Daniels does not have any coaching experience, but his lengthy playing career, spanning multiple leagues and positions, should allow him to succeed right away at Lincoln, where he looks forward to getting to meet the students face to face as soon as he can.

XFL suspends operations, reboot ends after just 1 season

The XFL is suspending operations, effectively immediately, and terminating all of their employees after only completing five games.

The coronavirus put all live sports to a screeching halt in March, causing the cancellation of the NCAA tournament and all NCAA spring sports, and delaying the end of the NBA regular season and the start of the MLB season.

All of those entities, however, will survive the temporary loss of revenue from the shutdown. The fledgling XFL, halfway through the first season of their new reboot, will not.

XFL COO Jeffery Pollock held a conference call with XFL employees and informed them the league is suspending operations and that all employees have been laid off.

The league did not specifically announce a reason, although COVID-19’s massive impact on the league’s revenue likely has a huge impact on the decision to suspend the league.

The XFL has been in the works for multiple seasons, finally playing games in February of 2020. Eight teams, including the Seattle Dragons, were able to play a five-game schedule before the shutdown.

The league had tv deals on ESPN, FS1 and CBS, and while the talent level was not on par with the NFL, the games were still entertaining and many of the innovative rule changes appealed to fans.

Now, employees will be out of a job and the players will have to hope they performed well enough to land in an NFL training camp, as they no longer have the XFL to continue their professional playing career.

Which Seattle Dragons should the Seahawks pursue in free agency?

The Seattle Dragons could send a handful of players from the XFL to the NFL, and the Seattle Seahawks should have their eye on a few of them

The XFL’s first season back on the field was cut short, thanks to concern about the global pandemic known as COVID-19.

However – the league proved it can sustain itself thanks to an entertaining brand of football and multiple, lucrative media deals that should allow the league to survive in 2021 and beyond.

One aspect of the XFL that has yet to be fully fleshed out is the idea of the league as a feeder league for the NFL. While that is not currently a functioning relationship between the two entities, it’s clear many of the players who succeed in the XFL will inevitably end up in the NFL – starting with star quarterback P.J. Walker, who agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers on the first day XFL players were eligible to sign with NFL teams.

Walker won’t be the last XFL player to ink a new deal, and while Seattle’s local team, the Dragons, finished with just a 1-4 record, they too have some potential NFL talent on their roster.

Here are three players who could be of interest to the Seattle Seahawks, all who have previous NFL experience and who have a good chance of winning a job in training camp if they play well over the summer.

3 XFL players the Seattle Seahawks could pursue in free agency

The XFL is allowing players to be signed by NFL teams starting Monday, March 23. Here are three players the Seattle Seahawks should pursue.

The XFL officially announced the cancellation of the rest of the 2020 season, bringing a short end to the league’s recreation thanks to the coronavirus.

While many felt the league’s sustainability was in question, the league’s innovative rules and overall talent level seemed sustainable, and as of now they have every intention of making a return in 2021.

However – they’ll likely have to do it without many of their best players, as the NFL will be free to sign players from the XFL onto their rosters starting Monday, March 23 at 6:00 a.m. PT.

Many of the XFL’s star players will now get a chance to show what they can do at the game’s highest level.

The Seahawks have already showed interest in at least one key player from the XFL ranks, and there are a handful of others who could be of interest to this team as they look to build a 90-man roster ahead of training camp.

XFL: Seattle Dragons player tested positive for COVID-19

The Seattle Dragons had a player test positive for COVID-19, aka the coronavirus, after he played in the team’s final two games.

The XFL, which has shut down operations for the 2020 season, announced that a player on the Seattle Dragons tested positive for COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus.

The player, who remained nameless, played in both of the team’s most recent games on February 29 and March 7. They self-reported symptoms on Tuesday and have been in quarantine ever since, and the results came out on Friday.

It’s unclear if this player’s symptoms played a part in the league’s decision to cease operations. However, considering the decisions made by the NCAA, the MLS, the MLB and the NBA, it’s unlikely the XFL would have continued playing regardless.

Playing in their first rebooted season since 2001, Vince McMahon’s XFL was enjoying a successful campaign, with lucrative tv deals and rule changes that had many fans interested in the product on the field.

However – recovering from a partial season and all the lost revenue from ticket sales, concessions and tv will be difficult, especially with the league pledging to pay their players in full despite not completing the season.

XFL player for Seattle Dragons tests positive for coronavirus, has been quarantined

The rapidly spreading coronavirus has struck the XFL, which suspended league play Friday, as the league confirmed to USA TODAY Sports reporter Tom Schad that an unidentified player, a member of the Seattle Dragons, has tested positive for the virus and has been quarantined.

The rapidly spreading coronavirus has struck the XFL, which suspended league play Friday, as the league confirmed to USA TODAY Sports reporter Tom Schad that an unidentified player, a member of the Seattle Dragons, has tested positive for the virus and has been quarantined.

Per USA TODAY Sports reporter Tom Schad

The player received a test for COVID-19 “as soon as possible,” according to the XFL, and received the findings Friday — less than 24 hours after the league announced it was suspending its season, like other professional sports leagues around the country.

The unidentified player did participate in Seattle’s previous game against the Houston Roughnecks, the league said, but he was asymptomatic at that time.

“The league is alerting players, staff, vendors and partners associated with the Dragons, Roughnecks, and (St. Louis) BattleHawks, as this player also participated in the February 29 game in St. Louis,” the league said in a statement provided to USA TODAY Sports on Saturday.

“The XFL is monitoring the situation closely and taking every measure necessary in accordance with recommendations set forth by the CDC.”

XFL suspends season amid COVID-19 outbreak

The XFL now joins the NBA, NHL, MLB, and the NCAA in halting activities in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

The inaugural season for the revived XFL will be cut short as the new league announced on Thursday afternoon they will not be playing the rest of their regular-season games due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The XFL may be done for the year, but they are not alone when it comes to other leagues postponing activities. The NBA and NHL both announced they are suspending their seasons as well, with the MLB delaying the start of their season for at least two weeks, and the NCAA entirely canceling their beloved March Madness tournament.

With the end of the XFL comes the conclusion of the Seattle Dragons 2020 campaign as well. The Dragons were still slated to play their Week 6 game on Saturday versus the Los Angeles Wildcats, albeit in front of an empty stadium due to Washington Governor Jay Inslee’s limitations on crowd sizes of 250 people or more.

The Dragons remained competitive throughout the year, but ultimately came up short and will finish their opening campaign at 1-4, with their lone win coming from a 17-9 victory over the Tampa Bay Vipers – who are similarly 1-4.

Despite the Dragons sharing the XFL’s basement with the Vipers, they enjoyed considerable fan support from the Seattle faithful. Seattle once more proved it was a city in love with football, hungry for more even after a successful season from the Seahawks.

Should the XFL survive such a major setback and resume play in 2021, there is little doubt the Dragons will still have a solid fan-base to return to.

XFL Seattle Dragons will play Week 6 without fans due to virus threat

Due to the increasing threat of the coronavirus in Washington State, the XFL Seattle Dragons will play their Week 6 home game without fans.

The Week 6 game between the XFL Seattle Dragons and Los Angeles Wildcats will be played on Sunday as scheduled, however, the stands will be empty.

With the elevated risk of exposure to the coronavirus in the state, Washington’s governor, Jay Inslee, has limited public events via proclamation. Events that are scheduled to take place in King (Seattle), Snohomish, and Pierce counties with more than 250 people are now prohibited.

The Dragons released a statement Wednesday via Twitter informing fans they would not be allowed in the stadium for Sunday’s event.

“Based on the proclamation issued Wednesday by Washington Governor Jay Inslee, the Seattle Dragons will host the LA Wildcats this Sunday, as scheduled. The game will take place at 4pm PT at CenturyLink Field without fans in the venue. The game will be broadcast live, also as scheduled, on ESPN2. – Jeffrey Pollack, XFL President & COO”

Fans who had already purchased single-game tickets for the matchup will be provided a refund and season ticket holders can request a refund or credit towards next season instead. Click here for more refund information.

XFL midterm report card grades for all 8 teams

The XFL is halfway through its season and the Houston Roughnecks are way ahead of the rest of the teams.

The XFL has reached the midpoint of its season. One team stands above all: the Houston Roughnecks. How does everyone grade out?

Dallas Renegades

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

One of the disappointments. There were high hopes when Bob Stoops was named coach of the Renegades. He brought the ultimate winning pedigree from Oklahoma. Dallas has struggled on offense and it has been dampened by injuries to quarterback Landry Jones, expected to be a huge asset. At 2-3, the Renegades need to find their stride in the second half of the season or they won’t qualify for the playoffs. Grade: C-minus
