NCAA adjusts college golf rankings parameters with first 2024-25 release coming next week

How college golf teams are ranked will be adjusted this season.

The NCAA is listening.

With the first college golf rankings release coming Wednesday, Oct. 16, the NCAA sent out a memo to coaches on Friday announcing adjustments in the ranking methodology for the 2024-25 season. This comes on the heels of numerous groups providing feedback and recommendations for adjustments with Mark Broadie’s college golf rankings after a highly-debated debut last season.

Members across NCAA Division I, II and III made up the rankings working groups, as well as reps from NAIA and NJCAA programs.

Golfweek obtained the memo, which was also posted on social media.

The NCAA is making four changes to its rankings criteria for the season. First, a points scale will be compressed to “ensure a more gradual and consistent distribution of points awarded during events throughout the season.” Then, match play, medal-match play and dual match competition will have reduced weighting, as will competition solely against out-of-division teams. Lastly, guardrails will be tightened to limit the impact of outlier results.

The memo states the changes were largely based on feedback from the Division I, II and III Men’s and Women’s Golf Committees, as well as in collaboration with Broadie and NCAA staff.

Broadie’s system is based on a weighted average points system based on head-to-head stroke differentials. While coaches have a year of that method under their belt, there was still plenty of confusion with his methodology last year after more than three decades using a head-to-head ranking.

Last year at the annual coaches convention in Las Vegas, Broadie told Golfweek he was more than willing to adjust his ranking if that’s what the coaches wanted.

Changes have indeed taken affect, and next week, the first rankings with the adjustments will come out.

Former Wisconsin coach leads program to signature win over Nebraska

Former Wisconsin coach gets signature win over Nebraska

Former Wisconsin and current Illinois head coach Bret Bielema led his No. 24-ranked Fighting Illini to a signature win over No. 22 Nebraska on Friday night.

The 31-24 overtime triumph moved his team to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in Big Ten play. The ranked matchup, paired with the hype surrounding Nebraska’s 3-0 start, the national profile of freshman QB Dylan Raiola and the Friday night national television stage makes the win arguably the biggest of Bielema’s Illinois tenure.

The former Badger coach is in his fourth season at Illinois. His best season with the Illini came in 2022 — an 8-5 finish with as high as a No. 14 ranking in the AP Poll. The Nebraska win puts 2024 on pace to surpass that finish.

Illinois’ 4-0 start also includes a home win against a ranked Kansas team, plus blowout wins against Eastern Illinois and Central Michigan. The win moves Illinois’ record against ranked teams under Bielema to 4-5. In the 10 years before his arrival, the program went just 3-28 in those matchups.

Bielema’s postgame excitement captures the gravity of the road victory.

Bielema coached at Wisconsin from 2006-2012. He went 68-24, including Big Ten titles in 2011 and 2012. His controversial departure to Arkansas in 2012 cast a shadow over his tenure. Given Wisconsin’s ongoing struggles since firing Paul Chryst in 2022, many have turned around to appreciate Bielema’s ability to win during his time in Madison.

To add to the Wisconsin connection, the Illinois staff includes former Badger players Aaron Henry (defensive coordinator) and Terrance Jamison (defensive line coach).

Wisconsin does not play Illinois this season for the first time since 2010. It beat Bielema and the Fighting Illini 25-21 last season on a last-minute touchdown pass to OT Nolan Rucci.

The Badgers do play Nebraska, however. Friday’s loss halts the Cornhuskers’ momentum after a flawless start to the season. The late-season matchup between the two teams could go on to largely define each of their respective seasons.

Falcons still refuse to put the Saints on their scoreboard

The Falcons still refuse to put the Saints on their scoreboard. It’s Atlanta versus the Visitors on Sunday:

The New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons renewed their rivalry for the first time this season as they met in Atlanta for Week 12.

The Falcons have continued an old tradition as they refuse to put the Saints’ name on the Mercedes-Benz Stadium scoreboard, instead showing “Visitors.” This rivalry has been heated and petty for years, this is just another feather in that cap. The mind games haven’t done great for the Falcons in the past, as the Saints haven’t lost in Atlanta since the 2017 season.

There is some extra spice to this game as the all-time series is tied for the first time in almost 60 years, with the Saints on a 6-1 stretch. The battle is now for bragging rights as well as the NFC South title.

College football scores: USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll Top 25 results

What changes next week after all these results Saturday?

It wasn’t the craziest weekend of college football as there wasn’t that one major upset that left the world shaking their collective head but there was plenty of action in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll as six of the nation’s top 25 teams went down.

That very well could have been seven had Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M actually called a real play on the final down at Alabama instead of whatever in the wide world of sports they drew up.

This week was good but next week has the makings of the biggest college football Saturday of the year.  Check out this week’s results below first though!

College football top 25 scoreboard: 10 ranked teams fall

So how high will Kansas be after 10 ranked teams fell this week?

It won’t go down as the craziest of college football weekends we’ve ever seen but Week 5 came and went with plenty of happenings.  Although everyone ranked in the top-seven walked out of the weekend with victories, a pair of top-10 teams lost and 10 of the 25 ranked teams lost this weekend.

Meanwhile, number-one looked anything but stellar on the road against an unranked opponent while number-two lost their starting quarterback for an unknown amount of time.

What were all the scores from the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll top 25 during Week 5?

Take a look below to see how each team ranked 1-25 fared on Saturday (or Thursday, Friday):

Week 1 College football scoreboard: Georgia routs top-15 Oregon

What game is the biggest chance to be an upset this weekend?

Will there be a major upset in week one of this college football season?  The first full slate of the season opened Thursday with a thriller between Pitt and West Virginia that made us all collectively ask why we continue to do things that keep rivals like those from playing annually.

Week 1 sees some marquee matchups with No. 5 Notre Dame traveling to No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Georgia taking on No. 12 Oregon in Atlanta, but there are several compelling contests beyond that as well.

Will there be a major upset along the way today?  One top 15 team survived a scare as a missed PAT coupled with a missed field goal allowed them to hang onto victory.  Check out the results of all the top 25 games below.
