Rutgers vs. Ohio State: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Saturday

Rutgers takes on No. 3 Ohio State Saturday. Get the latest news, including where to watch the game

Rutgers plays No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

If you know anything about the history between these two teams, then you know Rutgers has been dominated every time they’ve taken on Ohio State. Do not expect a different result today. After starting the year 3-0 once again, the Scarlet Knights stumbled to start Big Ten play last week. They fell to Iowa 27-10 in a game that never truly felt that close. There is a clear gap in the level of talent between these two programs. Rutgers is in the early stages of a program rebuild. Ohio State is No. 3 in the country in every poll, is a perennial power house, and has future NFL players throughout their roster – including their bench. The Buckeyes have the leader for the Heisman Trophy under center and have one of the best recruiting classes each and every year. Expect this game to be over before the end of the first quarter.

Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:

  • Date: Saturday, October 1, 2022
  • Time: 3:30 p.m. ET
  • TV Channel: Big Ten Network
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch here)

Al-Shadee Salaam (Rutgers – RB): The sophomore running back has stepped up in a big way in the running back rotation. He has rushed 25 times for 145 yards (5.8 ypc) and two touchdowns.

Samuel Brown (Rutgers – RB): Many fans may not have expected to see this much of the true freshman out of Philadelphia this season, but injuries combined with a strong spring and strong showing in non-conference games have led to Brown being a staple in the backfield. He has 27 rushing attempts for 131 yards (4.9 ypc) and is also tied for the team lead with two rushing touchdowns.

C.J. Stroud (Ohio State – QB): If you aren’t familiar with how good Stroud is, just watch this game. He is going to pad his Heisman resume in a big way. He is tied for the No. 1 spot in the country with 16 touchdowns and just one interception. He has thrown for 1222 yards on 112 attempts and completed passes at a 70.5 percent clip. He has been exciting to watch and you’ll be watching him on Sundays next year.

Rutgers basketball extends offer to Darrion Sutton

Rutgers extended an offer to class of 2024 small forward Darrion Sutton

Class of 2024 small forward Darrion Sutton received an offer this week from Rutgers basketball. This is his first offer from a Power Five school.

The Scarlet Knights are the first program from the Big Ten to offer the high school junior. The  6-foot-7, 170-pound forward also received an offer from St. John’s from the Big East this week.

247Sports has Sutton as a strong three-star recruit, and the No. 3 recruit out of Missouri in his class. He comes in at No. 28 for small forwards in the class of 2024. Sutton currently plays prep ball for Gateway City Elite and is a native of O’Fallon, Missouri. The prospect took to twitter to announce his offer.

[lawrence-related id=19342]

Sutton does not currently have a ranking over at On3.com, but as his recruiting picks up so will his profile.

[lawrence-related id=19406]

For Gateway City Elite, Sutton averaged 13.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.1 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game last season as a sophomore. He has continued to improve and grow physically and should continue to make some noise on the recruiting trail during this season.

Rutgers women’s basketball lands class of 2023 commit

Rutgers women’s basketball lands 2023 commit in point guard Jillian Huerter

Rutgers women’s basketball season may not start until November, but the recruiting efforts don’t have an offseason. The Scarlet Knights landed a class of 2022 commit in the form of point guard Jillian Huerter.

The 2022 Shenendehowa High School grad took to social media to make her announcement, sharing her excitement to commit to the program. She is currently playing for the Kent prep school. Her recruiting profile took a small hit due to pandemic-impacted seasons, and she spent the early part of her senior season rehabbing from a torn meniscus. The Saratoga County native fills an immediate need for the Scarlet Knights as many of the guards from last season’s squad have either graduated or transferred.

Huerter is no stranger to high level basketball as her family is basketball royalty in Saratoga. Her father Tom and brother Tom Jr. both played Division I at Siena College, while her older sister is currently playing for Providence College heading into her sophomore season.

[lawrence-related id=19233]

Let’s not forget about older brother Kevin who is currently in the NBA, signed with the Sacramento Kings and previously played for the Atlanta Hawks.

Back in May, she spoke to local media about how life was growing up with so many high level basketball players:

“We had a lot of two on two games growing up. Now we’ll probably do more shooting competitions but we keep the competitiveness up with other games. We play a lot of cards or just anything we can do to compete with each other.”

Rutgers women’s team struggled last season to a 11-20 record – a steep drop off from a strong 2020-2021 campaign where they finished 14-5. Under the guidance of new head coach, Coquese Washington, they are looking to rebuild the program into a Big Ten power. Washington’s history of winning in the Big Ten with Penn State should pair perfectly with someone with the acumen and basketball family such as Huerter.

Arella Guirantes dominating in FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup

Former Rutgers women’s basketball star Arella Guirantes is leading all scorers at the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup

Former Rutgers women’s basketball star Arella Guirantes is playing for team Puerto Rico and putting on a show at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Group play has wrapped up at the World Cup and the Puerto Rico star is leading all scorers with 18 points per game. Guirantes is playing for her national team for the first time and making an immediate impact. Puerto Rico finished in dead last in their last two international competitions, but the former Scarlet Knight has led them to two victories and the team’s first ever trip to the World Cup Quarterfinals.

The former Scarlet Knight also leads all players in total points with 90. Guirantes has twice scored over 25 points – once recording a double-double with 10 rebounds and the other falling just short with nine boards.

[lawrence-related id=19249]

The 24-year-old rising star is honored to represent her heritage and the country where her grandfather is from. She spoke to media about this when first joining the team:

“It’s a great experience. It’s a blessing to finally put on this jersey,” said Guirantes. “I was just thinking before the [Belgium] game. It kind of hit me right during the national anthems. I felt like I had more pride wearing this jersey and I owed it to more than just myself to play hard.”

“So, it’s a beautiful feeling. It’s great to play with these girls and be coached by these coaches here, and I’m just grateful for the experience.”

Prior to joining Puerto Rico, Guirantes was drafted in the 2021 WNBA draft by the Los Angeles Sparks and is currently a free agent. In her senior season with Rutgers, she averaged 21.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 1.8 blocks, and 2.2 steals per game and was named to the First Team All-Big Ten team.

Rutgers stumbles in latest USA TODAY 1-131 re-rank

USA TODAY released their weekly re-rank of all 131 FBS schools. How does Rutgers matchup with the rest of the Big Ten and the nation?

Rutgers football came crashing back to Earth this past weekend as they fell 27-10 to a strong Iowa team Saturday night. They suffered their first loss of the season in front of a sold-out crowd in Piscataway after starting the season with three victories.

The Scarlet Knights had a lot of things go wrong, but the offensive line and their ability to protect quarterback Evan Simon was the main reason why this game felt so out of hand. Partner those struggles with the Hawkeyes scoring two defensive touchdowns, and you have the perfect combination for a three score advantage for Iowa. Rutgers may not have continued their winnings ways, but they did confirm one thing for sure: Their rebuild is far from over.

[lawrence-related id=19160]

On Monday morning, Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY released his weekly re-rank of all 131 FBS schools and Rutgers, despite losing by 17, only saw a slight drop in their ranking – falling just six spots to No. 58 which is where they stood after their dominant victory over Wagner. A lot of the Big Ten stayed close to their rankings from last week as well. In fact, only two teams moved more than eight spots in either direction.

Michigan State saw the farthest fall as their struggles continue. The Spartans dropped 17 spots down to No. 53. Moving the other way, Minnesota continues their early-season surge and moved to 4-0 on the season and as a result were voted No. 23 in the latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll. As a result, they jumped 13 spots up to No. 26 in the re-rank. The top three teams in the Big Ten saw no movement and all remained undefeated.

Rutgers faced a big challenge in Iowa and things are not getting any easier. They hit the road to take on No. 3 Ohio State in which will be a true measuring stick for how much longer this rebuild has to go. They have three top 25 opponents in the next five weeks. The Scarlet Knights will need to tighten things up a bit if they want to receive a bowl bid by season’s end.

Let’s see how the Big Ten did in the 1-131 re-rank and how Rutgers measures up against the conference.

Last week’s rank Teams This week’s rank
3 Ohio State 3
4 Michigan 4
6 Penn State 6
39 Minnesota 26
37 Maryland 34
48 Iowa 40
36 Michigan State 53
46 Wisconsin 54
52 Rutgers 58
68 Illinois 66
70 Purdue 72
73 Indiana 80
102 Northwestern 109
113 Nebraska 115

Jason Duclona de-commits from Rutgers football

Class of 2023 defensive back Jason Duclona de-committed from Rutgers on Monday

Rutgers lost a member of the 2023 recruiting class on Monday as defensive back Jason Duclona de-committed from the program. His announcement comes on the heels of an unofficial visit to UCF.

Duclona announced his decision via social media, thanking Rutgers and head coach Greg Schiano for the original offer as well as thanking “Scarlet Nation” for showing him love from the very beginning. The Estero/Florida product is a three-star recruit according to the 247Sports Composite and is listed as an athlete in their rankings as he was successful on both sides of the ball in high school. Rivals has him ranked as a three-star recruit as well and a top 100 prospect among cornerbacks.

[lawrence-related id=19264]

The all-around player explained why he de-committed after just committing back in June when speaking with SBLive Florida:

I just thought my commitment was rushed. I need to find a place 100 percent for me, and Rutgers didn’t feel 100 percent.

After making his de-commitment official, Duclona announced offers from UCF and Mississippi State that he received while he was committed to Rutgers.

Players of the Game from Rutgers’ loss against Iowa

Let’s take a look at the players of the game for each phase from Rutgers’ first loss of the season

Rutgers football lost for the first time this season Saturday night against in front of a sold-out SHI Stadium. Some fans may be ready to overreact to the rough game after a 3-0 start, but one thing was confirmed – there is still a good amount of road ahead in the Scarlet Knight’s rebuild.

Head coach Greg Schiano‘s squad was able to clean up some of the penalties (5 penalties, 37 yards) that have plagued the team as of late, but there was still some sloppy play throughout. The offense had used a rotation at quarterback prior to Week 4, but Saturday saw Evan Simon running the show the whole evening as a result of injuries to Noah Vedral and Gavin Wimsatt. Simon is more of a passer but spent a lot of time staring down his first or second option and trying to force throws due to the strong Hawkeye defense on every level.

[lawrence-related id=19212]

Regardless of the result, there are always positives to highlight after every week in college football. Let’s take a look at the players of the game from each phase from Saturday night.

Five Things to Consider from Rutgers’ first loss of the season

Rutgers lost their first game of the season in against Iowa on Saturday. Let’s look at the big questions coming out of Week 4

Rutgers football opened up Big Ten play in Week 4 of the college football season against Iowa. After starting 3-0, their hopes of winning their first four games for the first time since 2012 were dashed.

The Scarlet Knights fell at home inside SHI Stadium 27-10 to the Hawkeyes in front a sold out crowd. Despite being down 17-3 at the end of the first half, Rutgers felt very much in the game as they held the Iowa offense to just three points. But in the second half, Iowa made sure to keep Rutgers at arms length. They continued to attack on the ground, rushing 38 times to only 17 pass attempts. The Hawkeyes relied on the passing game so little that just one of the team’s 11 receptions was caught by a wide receiver.

Rutgers’ Evan Simon showed flashes in the passing game, but spent too much time with white jerseys and black helmets in his grill to truly make a difference. Being the sole passer was new for the quarterback and the offensive line left a lot to be desired.

[lawrence-related id=19161]

Iowa’s defense was strong, and they attacked on the ground – two things everyone expected from the Hawkeyes. Head coach Greg Schiano spoke about the blueprint for Iowa with the media prior to the game:

“You know exactly what they’re gonna do. You know how they’re going to line up on both sides and yet, it’s so difficult to stop because they are so well coached.”

Iowa did exactly what you thought they would, and Rutgers had no answers. Let’s take a look at a few important things to consider after the Scarlet Knights suffered their first loss of the season to the Hawkeyes.

Rutgers vs. Iowa: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Saturday

Injury report, key players, and how to watch Rutgers vs. Iowa on Saturday, September 24.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights play the Iowa Hawkeyes on the gridiron on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

Rutgers sits at 3-0 on the season, but it has not been pretty. Game 1 against Boston College was sloppy, especially in the first half. Game 2 was an expected and well executed blowout over a FCS foe in Wagner. Last game was expected to be another easy victory over Temple, but the Owls were game and after an injury to Gavin Wimsatt – they kept it close as the Knights escaped Philly with the 16-14 victory. But you know what they say, a win is a win and Rutgers has three in as many chances. It’s time for Week 4.

[lawrence-related id=19068]

Iowa is 2-1 on the season, but the Hawkeyes are no slouch. Iowa won in Weeks 1 and 3, dropping their second contest in a rivalry game against Iowa State. This is the third time these programs are facing off and every time was the opening of conference play for both squads. The Hawkeyes are third in the Big Ten West and are coming off a season in which they won their division and finished the season with 10 victories and ranked No. 23 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. They are a serious competitor and will be the biggest challenge for the Scarlet Knights so far.

[lawrence-related id=19032]

Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:

  • Date: Saturday, September 24, 2022
  • Time: 7:00 p.m. ET
  • TV Channel: Fox Sports 1 (FS1)
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch here)

Iowa at Rutgers injury report:

Rutgers:

  • TE Matt Alaimo – Questionable (Undisclosed), DL Mohamed Toure – Out for season (knee), QB Noah Vedral – Questionable (Undisclosed), LB Moses Walker – Out for season (knee), QB Gavin Wimsatt – Questionable (Undisclosed), RB Aaron Young – Questionable (Undisclosed)

Iowa:

  • DB Jermari Harris – Out for season (Undisclosed), WR Jackson Ritter – Out for season (Undisclosed), WR Diante Vines – Out into October (wrist)

Players to watch:

Johnny Langan (Rutgers – TE): Langan is a former quarterback turned tight end who has acted as a jack-of-all-trades for the Scarlet Knights. Langan normally sees action in the wildcat formation, only throwing one pass on the season but it was a 43 yard pass for a touchdown. With redshirt freshman Gavin Wimsatt potentially not playing, he could be more involved in the passing game in Week 4. He is also third on the team in rushing and should remain a part of the ground attack, regardless.

Aron Cruickshank (Rutgers – WR): With the injuries at quarterback, there is a chance we see more consistency under center as opposed to the rotation that has been in play thus far in the season. Evan Simon is the lone scholarship QB who is healthy and is more of a passer first player than the other members in his position group. This opens the door for Cruickshank to show off his electric athleticism. The senior is always a deep threat, and leads the team with 11 catches and 101 yards receiving. Expect to see those numbers jump up after Week 4.

Jack Campbell (Iowa – LB): The senior had 10 tackles last week against Nevada, his second double digit performance this season. Campbell ranks No. 2 in the Big Ten with 10.3 tackles per game.

Kaleb Johnson (Iowa – RB): Despite being third on the team in carries with only 14, Johnson leads his team with 116 rushing yards. The freshman has shown tremendous explosiveness on his way to two touchdowns on the season so far.

Rutgers has started the year 3-0 on the season, and will try to make it 4-0 for only the first time since 2012. Game 1 at Boston College and Game 3 at Temple were both sloppy performances where the Scarlet Knights barely escaped with victories. Week 2 was an expected blowout against a lowly Wagner program from the FCS. Regardless, a win is a win and Rutgers has three in as many weeks.

Iowa is 2-1 on the season, but the Hawkeyes are coming off a season in which they finished with 10 wins and the No. 23 spot in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. Iowa won in Weeks 1 and 3, dropping their second contest in a rivalry game against Iowa State. This is the third time these programs are facing off and every time was the opening of conference play for both squads. They are the toughest test for the Scarlet Knights by a good margin so far this season.
