As much as I’d love some insurance for our San Diego ML look, the Padres +1.5 (-200) is way too expensive because they are an MLB-best 19-5 RL as road underdogs.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 7.5 (-112).

Most of the action is on the Under 7.5 (-108) according to Pregame.com yet the total has been lowered from an 8-run opener. This reverse line movement is suspicious and suggests the oddsmakers are laying a trap with the total and are baiting bettors into taking more pro-Under action.

It’s only a LEAN to the OVER 7.5 (-130) because the market analysis is my sole handicapping angle for the Padres-Mets total and this is a “sharp” number without a ton of value on either side.

LEAN PADRES (+155) for a “sprinkle” — if at all — because the Mets have the better starter and lineup. San Diego’s RL and the Under are also better looks in this game.

However, Scherzer had subpar numbers vs. the Padres last year we are getting a good number on San Diego’s ML with Darvish on the bump.

There’s also been a ton of bets on N.Y.’s ML but minimum line movement according to Pregame.com. A “line freeze” in the betting market is the oddsmakers’ way of daring bettors to take more action on the “square” side.

Run line/Against the spread

RISK A HALF-UNIT on the PADRES +1.5 (-145) instead of betting to win 1 unit. If your standard wager is $100 then bet $50 on the PADRES +1.5 (-145) to earn a $34.48 profit.

That said, San Diego is 17-5 RL as a road underdog and has a rock-solid bullpen that can be trusted to keep the Padres in the game if Darvish isn’t dealing Friday.

BET A QUARTER-UNIT on the UNDER 6.5 (+100) only because this is a “sharp” total.

Also, San Diego’s bullpen is 7th in xFIP (3.66), 4th in K/BB rate (3.22) and 5th in WHIP (1.13), per FanGraphs. Whereas San Francisco’s bullpen has a 4.14 xFIP (ranked 22nd), a 2.41 K/BB rate (21st) and a 1.36 WHIP (26th).

That said, I’d only BET a half-unit on the PADRES (-125) since there’s sketchy reverse line movement in the betting market. Most of the action is on San Diego, but the line is moving towards San Francisco, according to Pregame.com. I’m nervous that the oddsmakers are laying a trap.

I’m not confident enough to “sprinkle” on the RL regardless of how chunky it is because San Diego has flipped to RL underdogs with the Giants moving to RL favorites.

However, Seattle’s lineup has been a lot more productive at the plate than the Padres (-190) recently. The Mariners outrank the Padres in several advanced hitting categories over the past two weeks such as WAR (2.5-0.6), wRC+ (117-84), wOBA (.324-.283) and ISO (.182-.122), per FanGraphs.

Also, I’d like to fade the one-way action headed toward San Diego since more than 80% of the action is on the Padres (according to Pregame.com) and we know 8 of 10 sports bettors don’t beat the House.

Run line/Against the spread

RISK 1 unit on the MARINERS +1.5 (-140) instead of betting to win 1 unit since this is a pricey RL.

But, the Padres are just 10-20 RL as home favorites while the Mariners are 27-19 RL as underdogs and the presumed sharp side of the market is backing Seattle.

Nearly 70% of the cash is on the Mariners +1.5 (-140), but more than 80% of the bets placed are on the Padres -1.5 (+115), per Pregame.com. Typically, it’s wise to follow the money when it’s counter to the public since professional bettors put up a lot more dough than your average Joe.
