Washington rookie report after Week 2 of the preseason

Here is our weekly rookie report, covering Washington’s rookies after Week 2 of the preseason.

The Washington Football Team picked up their first preseason win on Friday with a 17-13 win over the Cincinnati Bengals to improve to 1-1 on the exhibition season.

It was another game where Washington’s rookies were featured heavily, especially its first five draft picks.

One of the Football Team’s rookies, tight end Sammis Reyes, did not play after entering into the concussion protocol last week. It was unfortunate for Reyes, who had a promising debut in the loss to New England, earning high praise from head coach Ron Rivera.

Now, we take a look at the performance of every Washington rookie from its preseason Week 2 win against the Bengals.

Washington offensive tackle Sam Cosmi had a strong NFL debut

Washington rookie Sam Cosmi is going to be difficult to unseat at right tackle.

When the Washington Football Team selected Texas offensive tackle Sam Cosmi in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft, many believed he would be slated to compete at left tackle with veteran Cornelius Lucas in 2021.

Things changed quickly in May when the Chicago Bears cut former Pro Bowl left tackle Charles Leno. Washington quickly signed Leno. Then shortly thereafter, the Football Team surprisingly released longtime starting right tackle Morgan Moses.

So, instead of a Lucas/Cosmi battle at left tackle in 2021, we were given a Lucas/Cosmi battle at right tackle.

Lucas worked with the first team at right tackle in OTAs and the minicamp. When training camp began, Lucas went on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and Cosmi was suddenly the first-team right tackle.

The early stages of training camp were rough for Cosmi, going against Chase Young and Montez Sweat. However, he continued to improve each day and earned praise from head coach Ron Rivera last week.

In his NFL debut against New England on Thursday night, Cosmi played the first half at right tackle and held up well. Rivera was impressed afterward, commenting on Cosmi’s performance on Friday.

Pro Football Focus was certainly impressed with Cosmi’s performance.

That’s not a bad debut. Cosmi has shown this summer; he gets better the more he plays. At this point, it’s difficult to imagine Lucas overtaking the rookie at right tackle.

But Cosmi doesn’t want anything given to him. He wants to earn the starting position.

“I want to be able to perform and perform at a high level,” Cosmi said. “Being able to have the opportunity is huge, and I know that’s not given; that’s earned. So, I’m going to try to earn that position.”

If Cosmi’s NFL debut was any indication, Washington has its answer at right tackle.

WATCH: Samuel Cosmi with the Washington Football Team at rookie minicamp

Take a look at former Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi at the Washington Football Team rookie minicamp.

Former Texas Longhorns offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi was drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft by the Washington Football Team.

Washington made a few moves recently in order to create depth on the offensive line by trading for Ereck Flowers and signing Charles Leno. This made the competition for Cosmi much more tasking to see the field in the near future.

Over the weekend, we got our first glimpse of Cosmi taking part in Washington’s rookie minicamp.

Cosmi won’t get a real chance to take ahold of a starting gig until veterans return for training camp. From there, the former Longhorn will likely find himself in a battle with Leno as the starting left tackle, or potentially challenge Flowers at the left guard spot if the coaching staff chooses to move Cosmi inside.

As a second round pick, Cosmi is essentially a roster lock. However, he will have an uphill battle to face if he wants to procure playing time come opening day.

Washington Football Team announces Samuel Cosmi’s jersey number

The Washington Football Team has announced former Texas Longhorn offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi’s jersey number.

Former Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi was selected by the Washington Football Team in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Cosmi kept former teammate and new Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger upright for three seasons as the full-time starter at both left and right tackle. He was a two-time All-Big 12 honoree, earring second-team honors in 2019 and first-team honors in 2020.

The No. 52 has been passed down the Texas Longhorns lineage for great offensive lineman, most recently worn by Connor Williams of the Dallas Cowboys.

However, with the Washington Football Team’s first round selection of Jamin Davis choosing to wear No. 52, Cosmi decided to go with a higher number and will sport No. 62 throughout his rookie season in Washington.

With the offseason additions of Charles Leno and Ereck Flowers, it’s unclear if Cosmi will be an immediate starter, but his potential and the position he was drafted in was enough for Washington to take a chance on him as a present and future asset to the organization.

What does signing LT Charles Leno mean for Samuel Cosmi in Washington?

With the Washington Football Team signing free agent tackle Charles Leno, what could that mean for former Longhorn Samuel Cosmi?

The Washington Football Team recently drafted former Texas Longhorns offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi with the 51st overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The original idea was that he would fill the left tackle spot left behind by longtime Washington player Trent Williams.

However, it looks like head coach Ron Rivera and the staff at Washington have complicated things a bit, as least in Cosmi’s case. It was announced on Wednesday that Washington signed free agent offensive tackle Charles Leno.

Leno is only 29 years old and is a former pro bowl tackle that stared 93 consecutive regular season games with the Chicago Bears before being released. He has the experience and reliability to start right away at left tackle, ahead of rookie Cosmi.

On top of that, Morgan Moses occupies the right tackle spot and has done so since 2014 as one of the game’s best right tackles. Could Cosmi potentially take the time to develop as a rookie?

Washington center Chase Roullier and right guard Brandon Scherff are also both among the league’s best and won’t get benched.

The only spot in question would be left guard. The Football Team recently swapped seventh-round picks to re-acquire Ereck Flowers who seemingly found a second life going from tackle to guard. However, for the price they got him, that hardly solidifies a starting spot.

Could Cosmi potentially move inside to compete for the guard spot?

Cosmi is a fantastic run and zone blocker, which wouldn’t make it difficult to transition. Considering his issues versus more athletic, speedy edge rushers on the outside, it would make sense for him to go up against defensive tackles instead.

While Washington fans are going to love how deep and talented their offensive line will look in 2021, Cosmi will either be the odd man out or one of the biggest guards in the game.

No Longhorns were selected in Bucky Brooks final 2021 NFL mock draft

No Texas Longhorns were taken in the first round of Bucky Brooks’ final 2021 NFL mock draft.

The 2021 NFL draft kicks off on Thursday night, therefore, analysts and writers have began to release their final mock drafts projecting which player(s) each team will pick.

It’s rare that analysts get these right. These projections are based on a combination of team needs, expected players available to fall to those respective teams and just a general feel for the board.

NFL analyst Bucky Brooks released his final first round mock draft for the 2021 draft, but interestingly enough, he didn’t include any Texas Longhorns to be selected in round one.

Offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi and pass rusher Joseph Ossai are both considered fringe first or second round players, but neither ended up in Brooks’ final mock.

In Brook’s top-5 rankings for each position, he mentions two Longhorns: Ossai is his No. 3 outside linebacker and Caden Sterns is listed as his No. 4 safety. There is a notable absence of Cosmi.

This is interesting considering Brooks had picked Ossai to go in the first round of his mock draft 1.0 previously. Obviously, you should take whatever mock draft with a grain of salt, but given Brooks’ connections and respect he has around the league, he might know more than he’s willing to let out.

It’s certainly possible that we will not see a Longhorn taken until day two of the draft.

NFL Draft: Todd McShay’s final top 350 prospects, seven Texas players included

NFL draft analyst Todd McShay released the final edition of his top 350 draft prospects and seven Texas Longhorns were included.

Earlier this month, ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. projected that a pair of Texas Longhorns would land in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. It’s understandable that most of the attention has been centered around Samuel Cosmi and Joseph Ossai as they have starting potential at the next level.

His partner in the same building, fellow ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay, released his final rankings of the top 350 prospects in this draft class.

McShay is a noted draft analyst and has had a good track record of ranking the players properly where they end up going.

There are seven of the eight Texas draft prospects listed and the notable absence is defensive back Chris Brown.

Take a look at where the other former Longhorns rank among their peers according to McShay’s top 350:

NFL draft grades for the eight Texas Longhorn prospects

NFL.com draft grades for the eight Texas Longhorn prospects that will take part in the 2021 NFL draft.

The 2021 NFL draft is finally only a few short days away with the first round slated to begin on Thursday, April 29 at 7 p.m. CDT.

Eight Texas Longhorn draft prospects will be anxiously waiting to hear their name called. Where they get drafted, or if they get drafted, is all based on how each team grades the players and where they fall on their particular boards.

Each NFL organization is different. The team’s need at the time often causes players to fall further than expected, get drafted higher than expected, or even become undrafted free agents.

In regards to what we do know, NFL.com’s database has draft grades for every prospect at any position. This is their grading scale:

8.0: The perfect prospect

7.3-7.5: Perennial All-Pro

7.0-7.1: Pro Bowl talent

6.7-6.8: Year 1 quality starter

6.5: Boom or bust prospect

6.3-6.4: Will be starter within first two seasons

6.1-6.2: Good backup who could become starter

6.0: Developmental traits-based prospect

5.8-5.9: Backup/special-teamer

5.5-5.6: Chance to make end of roster or practice squad

5.4: Priority free agent

5.0-5.3: Chance to be in an NFL training camp

No grade: Likely needs time in developmental league

Here’s how each Longhorn prospect was graded by NFL.com:

Predicting which round each of Texas’ NFL draft prospects will be selected

The 2021 NFL draft is quickly approaching and there are eight Longhorns who will be a part of the event. Which round will they be selected?

The upcoming 2021 NFL draft is a little over a week away and there will be eight different players representing Texas throughout the three-day event: Sam Ehlinger, Samuel Cosmi, Joseph Ossai, Caden Sterns, Ta’Quon Graham, Chris Brown, Brennan Eagles and Tarik Black.

It’s never a sure thing in terms of where each player will be selected, but after a few months of draft evaluation, it does become easier to get a general idea of the rounds that each prospect is expected to be taken off of the board.

Cosmi and Ossai appear to be top-60 picks, whereas Graham and Sterns both look like fringe day two or day three prospects. Ehlinger could be a noteworthy day three name, while Brown, Eagles and Black are all up in the air and could potentially not get drafted.

Given the players skills, game film, Senior Bowl (Graham and Ehlinger) and pro day performances, I’ll take a stab at which round each of Texas’ draft prospects will land in.
