Lions sign CB AJ Parker and WR Maurice Alexander among Week 5 roster moves

The Lions also placed WR Quintez Cephus on IR with a foot injury and elevated CB Saivion Smith and K Michael Badgley

Saturday was once again a busy one on the Detroit Lions roster front. The day before the Lions face the New England Patriots in Week 5, Detroit signed two players from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Lions signed WR Maurice Alexander and CB AJ Parker. Alexander played as Detroit’s kick returner in Week 4 as a practice squad elevation. Parker was Detroit’s primary slot CB last year but has been on the practice squad throughout the 2022 season thus far.

One of the roster vacancies came from waiving K Austin Seibert on Friday. The Lions created another by placing WR Quintez Cephus on IR. Cephus injured his foot in the Week 4 loss to the Seahawks.

Detroit also elevated CB Saivion Smith and K Michael Badgley from the practice squad for the week. It’s the first practice squad elevation for both players.

Justin Jackson, AJ Parker among the Detroit Lions initial practice squad signings

Jackson and Parker were each somewhat surprising cuts, but now they’re back in Detroit on the practice squad

The initial 2022 practice squad for the Detroit Lions is starting to take shape. In addition to wide receiver Tom Kennedy, a few other player names have come out in reported ties to the Lions practice squad.

Two of the more notable ones are RB Justin Jackson and CB AJ Parker, both of whom were somewhat surprising cuts by the Lions on Tuesday. Jackson is a vested veteran and was free to choose his own destiny, and he chose to keep himself in Detroit after a solid preseason. The former Chargers RB has rushed for just over 1,000 career yards in four seasons in Los Angeles.

Parker quickly ascended from undrafted free agent rookie to starting slot CB in 2021. He was a pleasant surprise in starting seven games before being injured. Parker was beaten out for the job this year by veteran Mike Hughes and converted safety Will Harris. He went unclaimed on the waiver wire.

Another CB who spent some time in Detroit’s starting lineup a year ago, Saivion Smith, is also back with the Lions on the practice squad after clearing waivers.

The widely reported moves will become official shortly.

Lions sign 9 from the practice squad to reserve/future contracts

The Lions locked up nine of the players from their practice squad to reserve/future contracts on Monday

One of the first orders of business for NFL teams in the offseason is to handle the players who ended the season on the practice squad. Those players, who are not technically under contract to the team any longer, are free to do what they wish.

For the players the Detroit Lions and other teams wish to keep around to at least start the 2022 offseason, they can sign reserve/future contracts. They are effectively commitments by the team to bring the players back with a chance to compete for spots in the coming season.

The Lions locked up nine of the players from their practice squad to reserve/future contracts on Monday:

DE Eric Banks
LB Tavante Beckett
DE Bruce Hector
WR Javon McKinley
QB Steven Montez
CB Parnell Motley
OT Dan Skipper
CB Saivion Smith
TE Shane Zylstra

The Lions also activated OLB Austin Bryant from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Bryant missed the final two games.

Lions waive CB Saivion Smith, get WR Geronimo Allison back on the practice squad

The Lions waive CB Saivion Smith, get WR Geronimo Allison back on the practice squad

Saivion Smith, we hardly knew ye…

The Lions parted ways with cornerback Saivion Smith, waiving the second-year CB on Thursday. It comes after just two games and minimal playing time.

Smith first arrived in Detroit just after Week 14 when the Lions claimed him off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers. He was brought in to help with a major rash of injuries and a COVID-19 outbreak at the position. In two games, Smith played a total of 14 snaps on special teams, recording one tackle. He never appeared on defense.

Detroit also restored wide receiver Geronimo Allison to the practice squad after he cleared COVID-19 protocols and was activated from that reserve list.

Lions C Evan Brown returns from the reserve/COVID-19 list

Lions C Evan Brown returns from the reserve/COVID-19 list and the team also claimed CB Saivon Smith off waivers

After several days of adding players to the reserve/COVID-19 list, the Detroit Lions finally had someone come off the list on Wednesday. Starting center Evan Brown made his return from the reserve/COVID-19 list for Wednesday’s practice.

It’s a welcome return by Brown, who has played well since replacing injured Pro Bowler Frank Ragnow early in the season. Brown missed the Week 14 loss to the Broncos. He was replaced by undrafted rookie Ryan McCollum and there was a noticeable decline in pass protection on the interior.

The Lions still have several players on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Safety Tracy Walker and CBs Ifeatu Melifonwu, Corey Ballentine, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Bobby Price and Mark Gilbert are all still idled. Ballentine and Robey-Coleman are on the practice squad but played Sunday as elevations to fill in for others.

To help with the decimated secondary, the Lions claimed CB Saivion Smith off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers this week. He joins ex-Titans safety Brady Breeze as newcomers in the Detroit defensive backfield.

49ers release CB Saivion Smith after one game

The #49ers are thin at CB, but that didn’t stop them from releasing one.

The 49ers on Monday announced the release of cornerback Saivion Smith following his first and only game with the club Sunday in Cincinnati.

Smith signed with the 49ers’ practice squad in early November and was elevated to the active roster for the club’s Week 14 contest against the Bengals. Injuries and Dontae Johnson’s absence opened the door for an additional CB to make his way onto the roster.

The 49ers chose to promote Smith to the active roster rather than just elevating him, which would’ve allowed him to revert back to the practice squad after the contest. Releasing him vacates a roster spot for San Francisco.

Smith played on 11 special teams snaps and didn’t record a tackle against the Bengals.

Seahawks sign WR Darece Roberson and waive CB Saivion Smith

Ahead of camp, the Seattle Seahawks signed wide receiver Darece Roberson and waived cornerback Saivion Smith to make room on the roster.

Seattle Seahawks announced two transactions on Monday afternoon ahead of the official start of training camp. Seattle has signed wide receiver Darece Roberson to provide additional depth at the position.

Roberson had originally signed with the Cardinals this spring as an undrafted free agent out of Wayne State but was waived in May.

According to Seahawks.com:

Roberson, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound speedster—he ran a 10.79-second 100-yard dash in high school—was a big-play threat as a receiver and return man in college, averaging more than 20 yards per catch twice (21.44 in 2018 and 20.76 in 2019) while also becoming the second player in school history to score touchdowns on kick and punt returns. Roberson finished his college career with 92 catches for 1,767 yards and 24 touchdowns in 43 games, 33 of them starts. As a senior, Roberson had 34 catches for 706 yards and nine scores, and added 118 rushing yards on just seven carries. He also averaged 32.3 yards per kick return as a senior, gaining 324 yards on 10 returns, including a 96-yard touchdown in the final game of his college career.

The Seahawks waived cornerback Saivion Smith to make room for Roberson on the roster.

Robinson, Saivion Smith leave game as Cowboys secondary continues to unravel

The Dallas Cowboys don’t have the stiffest of competition challenging their defense in Week 14, and they’ve been able to hold steady against the Cincinnati Bengals. The team has forced three fumbles and recovered all three, leading to 17 points. The Bengals, who have struggled on offense all season have been able to move the ball. Dallas’ quest to hold on to their 13-point lead may have to be pulled off without their starting cornerbacks.

No not that starting cornerback, Trevon Diggs has been out for a few weeks. No, not Anthony Brown; he has a rib injury. No, not Chidobe Awuzie, he tested positive for COVID-19 this week. Rashard Robinson (leg), signed to the 53-man roster earlier this month, was knocked out of the game a few plays after Saivion Smith (hand) was knocked out.

The Cowboys lined up in nickel with Deante Burton and Chris Westry joining Jourdan Lewis on the field for a third down early in the fourth quarter. Burton made the tackle on a scrambling Brandon Allen, but on the fourth down Allen found Tee Higgins against Burton’s coverage for an 18-yard gain and a first down.

It was later reported Smith was in the locker room being evaluated, but both he and Robinson returned to the game after Westry had to be escorted off the field with his own undisclosed injury.

Cowboys secondary decimated; 4 of 5 intended starters out vs Bengals

The Cowboys are set to be without four of the top six defensive backs as they travel to Cincinnati.

The Dallas Cowboys defense has been the worst unit in the NFL this season, and they might now be more more depleted than they have been all season.

Dallas announced that safety Donovan Wilson (groin) and cornerback Anthony Brown (ribs) did not travel with the team to Cincinnati this week, according to the Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken. Wilson and Brown are not the only defensive backs that the Cowboys will be missing as the club placed CB Chidobe Awuzie on the COVID list earlier this week. Rookie CB Trevon Diggs remains on IR with a broken foot.

Diggs, Awuzie, and Brown are three of the Cowboys top four remaining cornerbacks, with Xavier Woods the lone healthy member of the original starting secondary. Veteran Jourdan Lewis will man one of the corner spots.

Rashard Robinson and Savion Smith are now expected to start at the cornerback position, alongside Lewis. Robinson joined the Cowboys before Week 11, and has already played significant snaps since joining the squad. Smith has appeared in five Cowboys games since Week 3, but has only played a total of 14 defensive snaps.

Wilson had been a bright spot for the Dallas defense, taking over the starting safety role in Week 5 and continuing to improve until he played his best game to-date in the Cowboys Week 11 win in Minnesota, where he forced two turnovers.

Safety Darian Thompson is expected to make his second straight start in place of Wilson.
