Unpacking Future Packers: No. 92, Sacramento State OL Jackson Slater

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is Sacramento State offensive lineman Jackson Slater.

The Green Bay Packers’ lack of interior depth on the offensive line reared its ugly head during the Wild Card loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

When Elgton Jenkins left the game due to injury, Travis Glover and Kadeem Telfort struggled to answer the bell with Jordan Morgan on injured reserve.

With Josh Myers potentially on his way out the door this offseason, Brian Gutekunst must address the interior of the offensive line. A potential target during the 2025 NFL Draft is Jackson Slater. The Sacramento State offensive lineman checks in at No. 92 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown.

Slater finished his career at Sacramento State with 44 career starts, 42 at left guard and two at left tackle. This past season, he started nine games at left guard before suffering a knee injury.

“Being able to go there and see the field early and have success as a team most of my time there was awesome,” Slater said. “I met a bunch of my closest friends and my girlfriend as well, the experience is one I will always cherish and I’m grateful it went so well.”

Slater shows good initial quickness to fly out of his stance. Slater has strong hands and works hard to sustain, consistently creating movement in the ground game to open up running lanes. The 44-game starter is comfortable out in space and moves well laterally.

“I think overall I do a good job, I know I need to improve on my physicality as a run blocker and find ways to generate more finishes,” Slater said. “You’ll rarely see me unattached to my assignment, which I think is the most important part of having a good run game. Additionally, I think my strong suit is being out in space on screens, power, pin and pull, as I’m always head hunting trying to take dudes out.”

Slater is assignment sound in pass protection. He’s efficient in his pass sets and coordinated in his shuffle. He has the core strength to anchor against power. Over the course of the past two seasons, Slater gave up zero sacks and 14 pressures.

“I think I’m a very consistent player,” Slater said. “A big part of pass protection is being able to work as a unit. I think throughout my time at Sacramento State all of the offensive line units I’ve played with have been able to find good chemistry and understand who needs to do what. I think I have strong hands, good redirection skills, and find ways to do my job in a savvy way, which allows me to protect to the best of my ability. I think my athleticism helps me find ways out of potentially bad situations.”

During his time at Sacramento State, Slater logged 2,985 snaps at left guard, 202 at left tackle and five at center. While his best position is at guard, Slater is confident that he could play all five positions at a high level.

“I think if necessary I could play all five positions,” Slater said. “Right now I’m mainly focusing on the interior positions, as that’s where I’m viewed at the next level, but I’m confident I have the intelligence and athleticism to understand and dominate at any position on the field.”

Slater was featured on Bruce Feldman’s Freaks list before the start of the season. He was No. 87 on the list that included 101 players.

“I’ve always taken the weight room very seriously,” Slater said. “Ever since my sophomore year in high school. I think it’s important to have a strong foundation to be a good ball player and avoid injury. I’ve always stayed consistent with the lifting and running aspects of my training.”

Fit with the Packers

The Packers could be losing Myers to free agency this offseason and if the Packers don’t re-sign their starting center there will be some changes to the starting five.

If Myers isn’t re-signed Jenkins could move from left guard to center and Morgan could get the nod to start at left guard.

If that’s the case, the Packers will need to add an interior offensive lineman this offseason, and they’ll likely prioritize versatility.

Slater has started games at left guard and left tackle and even took five snaps at center this past season. The Sacramento State offensive lineman will most likely get some reps at center during Senior Bowl week and teams could view him as a player with the versatility to play all five positions.

“I think I’m a great get for any team,” Slater said. “My versatility and understanding of multiple positions on the offensive line is a huge asset. I’m always working to improve and develop all assets of my game. If you give me an assignment it will always be done the right way and successfully. I think overall I’m a very dependable and a low-drama player who wants to add value to an organization in any way I can.”

The Packers have had a ton of success finding quality offensive linemen on Day 3 of the draft. With his athleticism, versatility and football IQ, Slater could be high on Green Bay’s board when Day 3 of the draft starts.

Former Eagles QB Michael Vick had discussions about Sacramento State coaching job

Former Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has interest in landing the Sacramento State head coach job as the school moves up to the FBS level

Michael Vick is a Virginia legend, and although the former Eagles star has a cushy job at Fox Sports, he could be looking to join the collegiate coaching ranks.

We previously reported that Vick had interviewed for the head football position at Norfolk State. The interview came after Norfolk State dismissed former head coach Dawson Odums on Nov. 26.

Odums’ teams compiled a 15-31 record during his four years and finished with a losing mark in each of his final three seasons.

Adam Schefter reports that Sacramento State is considering hiring the former Hokies legend to lead its program to the FBS level.

Sacramento State has unveiled plans for a new football venue with visions of jumping to the higher-level FBS and into the revamped Pac-12 by its 2028 completion.

Sacramento State, plagued by a massive number of player injuries, finished 3-9 overall and on a five-game losing streak. In the Big Sky Conference, the Hornets tied with Northern Colorado for the worst record this season, with a 1-7 record.

Vick, a Newport News native and star at Virginia Tech, has no formal coaching experience. He was a training camp intern with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Vick played 13 seasons for four teams, including the Falcons and Eagles. He threw for 22,464 yards and 133 touchdowns. He was selected to play in 4 Pro Bowls and won one Comeback Player of the Year award.

Idaho delivers huge bad beat to Sacramento State backers with 9 points in final second

Idaho ended Sacramento State’s winning ways

Idaho snapped Sacramento State’s winning streaks on Saturday. The final score of 36-27 doesn’t do justice to how close the Vandals’ victory was.

Idaho’s Ricardo Chavez kicked a field goal with a second left to make it 30-27.

On the kickoff, Sacramento State tried to pull a version of the Stanford-Cal Band Play.

This one backfired on the Hornets, and those who backed the Hornets, who were getting 5.5 points.

While attempting to lateral the football it wound up in the hands of Turon Ivy Jr. of the Vandals, and he took it in for a touchdown.

The loss saw the end of Sacramento State’s 22-game regular-season winning streak and 19-game Big Sky winning streak.

Chargers RB Elijah Dotson among ‘Secret Superstars’ of preseason Week 1

Elijah Dotson raised some eyebrows in his NFL debut.

The Chargers ran wild in their preseason victory over the Rams on Saturday, finishing with 214 yards on the ground.

A key piece of their rushing attack was undrafted free agent Elijah Dotson. Dotson had 92 yards on six carries, including two long touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Dotson was one of Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar’s “Secret Superstars” from the first week of the preseason for his efforts.

Talk about an under-the-radar guy… Dotson spent four seasons as a secondary factor at Sacramento before moving to Northern Colorado and rushing for 935 yards and six touchdowns on 204 carries. That got him a shot with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent, and against the Rams on Saturday night, Dotson made more of that opportunity than anybody had a right to expect. He rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns… on just six carries and seven total snaps.

Dotson began his career at Sacramento State and was a two-time, first-team All-Big Sky selection. He was a graduate transfer to Northern Colorado last year, where he had 933 yards on the ground, led the team with 48 catches and had an 82-yard punt return touchdown.

As the Bolts build out their backfield, Dotson’s performance helped his cause. It remains to be seen if Los Angeles will roster three or four running backs, but if they’re to have four, Dotson could very well be in consideration for a spot if it keeps stacking up solid showings. At the very least, he should warrant a practice squad spot.

Patriots met with hidden gem linebacker prior to NFL draft

The Patriots could be looking to add to their linebacker room in the 2023 NFL draft.

The New England Patriots paid a visit to Sacramento State linebacker Marte Mapu, according to KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson.

Mapu was a productive player for the program. He recorded 65 tackles, one sack, a forced fumble and an interception last season. He also showed his athleticism, recording four pass deflections in four seasons at Sacramento State.

New England has had success drafting at the linebacker position in recent memory, as Josh Uche and Ja’Whaun Bentley stand out among some of those classes. The Patriots value the position, and it is a spot where depth is needed.

Mapu could be a late-round steal if they were to select him. New England doesn’t need to make the linebacker position a priority, but Mapu could be a solid selection, if he is still on the board later on.

2023 NFL draft: 6 small-school prospects Chargers should consider

Every NFL draft brings major contributors from smaller schools.

If the Chargers want to hit a home run in the 2023 NFL draft, they will have to consider all options when choosing who will make their draft board.

Every year a prospect from a small school becomes an NFL star in the making. Whether it’s the early rounds or undrafted free agency pool, there are plenty of players that always fly under the radar.

With that, I take look at six small school standouts that Los Angeles should consider based on positional needs.

Women’s NCAA Tournament: Sooners head west to face Portland at UCLA host site

Heading west, the No. 5 seeded Sooners will face Portland in the opening round of the Women’s NCAA Tournament.

The Oklahoma Sooners are in the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season. It’s the first time they’ve made back-to-back tournaments since the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Oklahoma was a four-seed a year ago, in Jennie Baranczyk’s first at Oklahoma. This season, they’re a five-seed, just missing an opportunity to host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament.

In order to make the sweet 16 for the first time since 2013, Oklahoma will have to overcome a strong trio of teams out in Los Angeles.

Here’s a look at what Oklahoma will be up against in the opening round of the Women’s NCAA tournament.

Notre Dame seed projections for NCAA Tournament

Might as well reserve your seats for the first two rounds in South Bend now.

Many are concerned about [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag]’ availability for the NCAA Tournament. Still others are concerned that her questionable status will affect Notre Dame’s seeding. But if you look at what experts are projecting, you’ll notice that Miles’ status is a minor factor at best.

Before Miles went down, the Irish were a surefire lock to host the first two rounds of the tournament. But between that unfortunate turn and the Irish getting blown out by Louisville without Miles in the ACC Tournament, doubts began to linger. Since then, it has become clear that those doubts were based purely on emotion. One only needed to take a step back and realize that the Irish built an impressive body of work during the regular season.

Miles or no Miles, the Irish’s projected seeding remains consistent, and barring a sudden shift in attitudes by the selection committee, it appears March Madness indeed will make a stop in South Bend. If you don’t believe that, look at these projections:

Puerto Vallarta College Challenge: Lady Vols shut out Sacramento State

Puerto Vallarta College Challenge: Lady Vols shut out Sacramento State

No. 11 Tennessee (4-0) defeated Sacramento State (2-5), 11-0, Thursday in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico.

After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Vols scored seven runs in the second inning.

Tennessee led, 1-0, after Katie Taylor walked with the bases-loaded, scoring Zaida Puni.

Giulia Koutsoyanopulos and Mackenzie Donihoo each recorded two-run doubles. Kiki Milloy drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Puni had an RBI double.

The Lady Vols scored four more runs in the fifth inning with three extra-base hits.

Koutsoyanopulos, who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs, recorded another two-run double. Milloy and Donihoo also hit RBI doubles in the inning.

Pitcher Ryleigh White started for Tennessee. She pitched three innings, surrendering one hit and one walk. She recorded three strikeouts.

7 small school prospects for the Eagles to watch at 2023 Senior Bowl

We’re looking at 7 small school prospects for the Philadelphia Eagles to watch at the 2023 Senior Bowl

The NFL draft starts in Mobile, and even with the Eagles preparing to face the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, all eyes this week will be on Alabama, for the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

The Eagles are no strangers to targeting small school players in the NFL draft and the results have mostly been positive.

Philadelphia used the 2016 Senior Bowl to analyze Carson Wentz and Howie Roseman used the No. 2 pick on the former North Dakota State star.

Dallas Goedert, Todd Herreman, Jeremiah Trotter, and Brian Westbrook also make the list.

With kickoff from Mobile quickly approaching, here are seven small school prospects to watch at the Senior Bowl on Saturday.
