Oregon prevails over Portland for fifth straight victory

The Ducks got off to an early good start and avenged an earlier loss with a 7-4 win over the Pilots.

In a matchup that likely could occur in an NCAA regional, the Oregon Ducks baseball team went on the road and managed to avenge an earlier loss to Portland with a 7-4 victory.

The win was the Ducks’ fifth straight and 20th on the season to improve to 20-7 overall. The Pilots, 3-0 in the West Coast Conference, fell to 17-9 overall.

These two teams met three weeks ago at PK Park with the Pilots stomping Oregon 15-5. It was a different story in the rematch as the Ducks were up 3-0 after two innings of play. Portland was able to cut the lead to 3-2 after three, but Jeffrey Heard’s RBI single extended the Ducks’ advantage.

The Ducks made it 6-3 in the sixth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly, a hit batsman and a walk. That would be more than enough for Oregon starter Michael Freund who went six innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out seven.

A trio of relievers, Logan Mercado, Ryan Featherston and Bradley Mullan, held the Pilots to just one run. Mullan earned his third save of the year.

Oregon goes back to Pac-12 action on Friday with a three-game weekend series at UCLA and Jackie Robinson Field. The Bruins are having their difficulties as they are just 10-15 overall and 4-8 in league play.

Pilots ground Ducks to a screeching halt in huge road loss

The Oregon women’s basketball team went up to Portland and suffered a humiliating 91-60 loss to the Pilots.

The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team needs to stop scheduling WCC teams.

Santa Clara defeated the Ducks 89-50 a couple of weeks ago and now it was Portland’s turn. But at least this didn’t occur in front of the Duck faithful inside Matthew Knight Arena.

The Pilots went on a 13-0 run early in the game and it never got better for Oregon in the 91-60 loss in Portland’s Chiles Center. The Ducks dropped to 4-2 overall, while Portland reached the .500 mark at 4-4 in the young season.

It was a half made from nightmares for the Ducks in the first 20 minutes as the Pilots took a commanding 46-18 lead and the game was effectively over. Oregon was just 6-of-36 from the field (16.7 percent) and it turned the ball over a grand total of 14 times in that devastating half of basketball.

While nothing was going right for the visitors, the home Pilots were shooting a bit better from the floor. Portland shot 16-of-38 (42 percent) from the field and 6-of-15 from the three-point line in the first half.

Unfortunately, Oregon couldn’t even get some morale points in the second half. While the game didn’t get worse, it wasn’t exactly a historic comeback. Portland still managed to outscore the Ducks 45-42 in the second half.

Grace VanSlooten led the Ducks with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Sofia Bell nailed four treys for her 12 points.

Now the Ducks have to shake off the bad loss and prepare for Baylor, which comes to MKA on Sunday for a 1 pm tip that is scheduled to be televised on Fox Sports 1.

Baseball recap: Ducks extend win streak to 10 with big win over Pilots

Oregon’s winning streak reaches 10 games after a 9-1 victory over Portland and just ahead of a big series with the Beavers.

There’s no better way to enter into a huge three-game series with your in-state rival than in the midst of a 10-game winning streak.

The Oregon Ducks baseball team hasn’t lost since the middle of last month and is coming off a 9-1 victory over Portland at PK Park. The Ducks will now prepare for a conference series with Oregon State Thursday-Saturday.

Sabin Ceballos crushed a three-run homer in the first inning and that was more than enough to defeat the Pilots. Oregon added three more runs in the fourth thanks to Bennett Thompson’s two-run double.

The Ducks sent four pitchers to the mound and held Portland to just one run and six hits. Oregon improved to 19-7, while the Pilots dropped to 17-11 overall.

Women’s NCAA Tournament: Sooners head west to face Portland at UCLA host site

Heading west, the No. 5 seeded Sooners will face Portland in the opening round of the Women’s NCAA Tournament.

The Oklahoma Sooners are in the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season. It’s the first time they’ve made back-to-back tournaments since the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Oklahoma was a four-seed a year ago, in Jennie Baranczyk’s first at Oklahoma. This season, they’re a five-seed, just missing an opportunity to host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament.

In order to make the sweet 16 for the first time since 2013, Oklahoma will have to overcome a strong trio of teams out in Los Angeles.

Here’s a look at what Oklahoma will be up against in the opening round of the Women’s NCAA tournament.

Oregon MBB recap: Ducks shoot their way past Pilots

Oregon was hot from the outside as the Ducks sank 12 three-pointers to blast Portland 78-56.

Coming into tonight’s game with the Portland Pilots, Oregon was shooting barely 30 percent from beyond the three-point line. Portland wanted to force the Ducks to shoot from long range.

And they did.

But the only problem for the Pilots was that Oregon was knocking down those threes time and time again. The Ducks were 12-of-22 on threes and that was more than enough to defeat Portland 78-56.

On the other side, the Pilots were not hitting their outside shots. Portland was making nearly 40 percent of their threes, but inside Matthew Knight Arena, the visitors from the WCC couldn’t find the mark going just 5-of-23 on three-pointers.

With the win, the Ducks move to 7-5 for the season with just one non-conference game remaining before the Pac-12 ramps up.

Oregon WBB recap: Ducks ground the Pilots with pressure defense

Oregon explodes for 33 points in the third quarter to run away from Portland 90-51.

Portland’s game plan was to press and pressure the Oregon women’s basketball team for turnovers and easy hoops on the other end.

The Pilots didn’t figure the Ducks (6-1) would turn the tables.

Oregon forced 21 turnovers and scored 32 points off of those turnovers to cruise to an easy 90-51 win over Portland of the West Coast Conference.

Freshman Chance Gray led Oregon with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including knocking down 4-of-8 from long distance. Phillipina Kyei added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Te-Hina Paopao scored 10 pounds and dished out eight assists while Taylor Hosendove came off the bench and just missed out on a double-double with nine points and 10 boards.

It was a close game at halftime as the Ducks led 40-29, but then put it all together in the second half and routed the Pilots, who fell to 5-4 on the season.

Kolby Somers earns his seventh save of the year with 5-4 win over Portland

Anthony Hall homers and Kolby Somers shuts the door on the Pilots for the 5-4 win at Portland.

Oregon Ducks baseball coach Mark Wasikowski probably didn’t think he would need his closer to come into the eighth inning to preserve a slim one-run lead considering the last time the Ducks played Portland, they won 18-2.

Kolby Somers was up to the task and earned his seventh save of the season as Oregon defeated the Pilots 5-4. With the win, the Ducks improved to 25-11 on the season and have won six straight.

After six innings of play, it looked like Oregon would cruise as it held a nice 5-0 lead. They scored one in the first and two more in the second. Anthony Hall extended the Ducks’ lead with a mammoth two-run home run in the sixth. It was his ninth homer of the year and the Ducks’ 56th home run as a team, equalling the number of round-trippers they hit last season. The next homer will be a program record.

Once it was 5-0, the Pilots managed to finally cross some runners home. They have threatened numerous times in the early innings, but the Ducks were able to leave runners on base. Portland was able to crack the scoreboard in the seventh with three runs off of reliever Matt Dallas, who just didn’t have it for the first time in quite a while.

Logan Mercado gave up a triple and a double and saw the lead cut to one at 5-4 and that was when Wasikowski went to his closer to shut down the Pilots and get out of Portland with a win.

Now the Ducks will come back home and host Washington State (13-21, 5-13) for a three-game weekend set beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.

Around the horn: Ducks prepare for Pac-12 play with win over Portland

Oregon hit three more home runs at home and that was more than enough to hand Portland an 18-2 loss Tuesday.

Midweek games during the college baseball season can be taken for granted at times. Teams sometimes give their regulars a rest to give players on the bench much-needed at-bats.

Oregon isn’t doing that.

The Ducks (8-5) sent out the regulars in a huge 18-2 win over the Portland Pilots Tuesday afternoon at PK Park. Perhaps that plan will change later this season, but Oregon wanted to keep its starters in rhythm with No. 2 Stanford next on the docket.

Tanner Smith, Jack Scanlon, Colby Shade, and Tyler Ganus all homered for the Ducks, who are continuing to build a case that their home ballpark is no longer a pitcher’s paradise. Oregon has hit 14 home runs in its first nine games at home so far.

Quick Hits: Career night from N’Faly Dante secures Ducks win over Pilots

The Oregon Ducks down the Portland Pilots, 96-71, on a career night from N’Faly Dante and a vintage performance from Will Richardson.

Dana Altman’s Oregon Ducks finally clicked on both offense and defense on Wednesday evening against the Portland Pilots, a game Oregon won 96-71.

It was a balanced scoring attack at Matthew Knight Arena, with four Ducks over 15 points, led by 20 from N’Faly Dante and 19 from De’Vion Harmon.

While the Pilots hung around for a bit in the second half, mostly thanks to scorching hot shooting from beyond the arc, the Ducks were eventually able to put them away thanks to toughness in the paint from N’Faly Dante (20 points and nine rebounds) and a vintage performance from Will Richardson, who had 16 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

The Ducks are back in the win column, and in convincing fashion, but they’ll have their hands full with the No. 1 ranked Baylor Bears on Saturday evening, before taking on Pepperdine early next week before Christmas.

More performances like this and the Ducks will start to turn this campaign around, especially if Dante – who had easily his best game of the season – continues to play this aggressively down in the paint.
