Notre Dame’s Ryan Bischel is Big Ten’s First Star of the Week

The Irish are killing it on the ice right now.

For the third week in a row, a Notre Dame player has been named one of the Big Ten’s Stars of the Week. This time, it’s Ryan Bischel taking home the honor, and he’s the conference’s First Star of the Week. This comes after back-to-back weeks of Ryder Rolston and Spencer Stastney getting the Third Star. Bischel is joined this week by Second Star Mason Lohrei of Ohio State and Third Star Carl Fish of Minnesota.

Bischel won both starts against Penn State over the past weekend, making 67 out of a possible 69 saves. The second game saw him make 35 saves for the shutout. That brought him to a 10-4-0 record, a .930 save percentage and a conference-leading GAA of 1.93.

This is the second time an Irish player has been named the Big Ten First Star of the Week. Max Ellis earned the honor Nov. 23.

The Irish continue their season Thursday and Friday at Wisconsin.

Notre Dame’s Spencer Stastney is Big Ten Third Star of the Week

Congratulations, Spencer!

After Notre Dame earned a weekend split against Minnesota, one of its players has been rewarded. Defenseman Spencer Stastney is the latest Big Ten Third Star of the Week. This is the second consecutive week an Irish player has earned that honor after Ryder Rolston won it last week. Stastney was honored alongside goaltenders Erik Portillo of Michigan and Jakub Dobes of Ohio State.

Stastney, who was an honorable mention on the preseason All-Big Ten Team, led the Irish with three assists in the two games against the Gophers. One of those assists helped Landon Slaggert score the game-winner in overtime of the second game. That increased his team-leading total in that category to 15.

This is the first time Stastney has been named a Big Ten star. In addition to this, he and Irish teammate Graham Slaggert are candidates for this year’s Senior CLASS Award, which is given to a senior or graduate student who excels in competition, character, community and classroom.

Notre Dame standout named in Big Ten stars of the week

Props to Ryder!

SOUTH BEND, Ind.  – Sophomore forward Ryder Rolston has been named Big Ten Hockey’s Third Star of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday (Jan. 25).

The Birmingham, Michigan native helped the Fighting Irish to an 8-2 win over rival Boston College (Jan. 19) in their only game last week. It marked his fourth game-winning goal this season, which leads the team and is tied for fourth nationally.

It marks Rolston’s second Big Ten weekly honor this season/of his career, having previously earned Second Star of the Week accolades on Dec. 8, 2021.

On the season, Rolston is Notre Dame’s second-leading scorer with 21 points on nine goals and 12 assists in 23 games played. His 12 assists are tied for the team lead and he has a team-high three power-play goals. The Irish are 12-3-0 this season when he notches at least one point.

Rolston’s goal, assist and point totals are each career-high marks after posting a goal five assists in 28 games last season as a freshman.

Notre Dame’s Ryder Rolston named Big Ten Second Star of the Week

Nice honor for the sophomore.

Notre Dame is off to an 11-4 start, and one major reason for that is Ryder Rolston. The sophomore forward is second on the Irish with 16 points, and he has earned a lot of those points lately. That recent effort has been rewarded as he was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week. He was sandwiched between First Star Michael Pastujov of Michigan and Third Star Pierce Charleson of Michigan State.

During the Irish’s two meetings with Ohio State over the past weekend, Rolston had a goal and an assist in both. One of those goals was his third game-winning goal of the season. The games also brought his point streak to seven games, which is a high for his career.

Rolston is the third Irish player to be named a Big Ten Star of the Week this season, joining two Third Stars by Matthew Galajda and one First Star by Max Ellis.

Notre Dame goes down to Penn State in Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals

Notre Dame will be forced to play the waiting game as far as its NCAA Tournament fate

.. That became official Sunday after the Irish fell to Penn State, 6-3, in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. Not even playing at the Compton Family Ice Arena could help on this day.

The Irish (14-13-2) got off to a great start, taking a 2-0 lead early in the first period on a power-play goal from Colin Theisen and an even-strength goal 31 seconds later by Jesse Lansdell. Though a late goal from Christian Sarlo cut the Irish’s lead in half, it wasn’t cause for concern just yet. That changed in the second period on back-to-back goals by Connor McMenamin to give the Nittany Lions (10-11-0) a lead they never gave up.

Tim Doherty scored on a power play before the second period ended, and that turned out to be the game-winner. Still, Chase McLane gave the Lions insurance with a pair of goals in the third period. Sandwiched between those was a power-play tally by Ryder Rolston, which could be the final Irish goal scored this season. It was depends on how forgiving the selection committee is.

Landon Slaggert, Ryder Rolston Taken on Second Day of NHL Draft

Without having played a single game for Notre Dame, Landon Slaggert and Ryder Rolston already are NHL products.

Without having played a single game for Notre Dame, Landon Slaggert and Ryder Rolston already are NHL products. The freshman forwards both were taken on the second day of the league’s draft Wednesday. Slaggert was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the third round as the 79th overall pick. Rolston went to the Colorado Avalanche as the 139th overall pick in the fifth round.

The Blackhawks wasted no time picking Slaggert’s brain:

Meanwhile, here’s how analysts viewed the Rolston pick on the NHL Network:

Slaggert has spent the past two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program. In 49 games, he scored 24 points with an equal number of goals and assists. Here’s part of his scouting report from the EliteProspects Draft Guide:

Slaggert played like a bulldozer in this game, he threw heavy hits, outmuscled opponents along the boards and seemingly always wanted to play the body to win the puck. He could outwork opponents in the slot as well. Showed some good speed and decent acceleration. Strong physically, dominates in board battles and in corners.

After two years with the U.S. National Team Development Program, Rolston played the 2019-20 season with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL. He had 33 points, including 16 goals, in 42 games. EliteProspects has this to say about him:

Stretched the zone and uses speed to beat defenders wide. Plays first unit PP. Great lateral mobility. Works hard to give good pressure on the backcheck. Good hands that work to protect the puck. Quick release on his shot, used edgework combined with puck protection handles to evade pressure in the offensive zone, even employed a kind-of “stationary spin” at one point.

Notre Dame Freshman Forwards Hoping for 2020 NHL Draft Selections

Tuesday and Wednesday will mark the achievement of a lifelong dream for many young hockey players. That dream is to be drafted by the NHL.

Tuesday and Wednesday will mark the achievement of a lifelong dream for many young hockey players. That dream is to be drafted by the NHL. This year’s draft could feature two Notre Dame freshman forwards. Landon Slaggert and Ryder Rolston are ranked 88th and 102nd, respectively, in the final North American Prospect Rankings.

Though neither player has appeared in a game for the Irish yet, hockey is rich in both of their families. Slaggert continues a Notre Dame tradition in his family, as his brother, Graham, is entering his junior season with the Irish, and his father, Andy, is an associate head coach who is in his 28th season with the program. Rolston’s father, Brian, began his 17-year NHL career by winning the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 1995, which came after winning the 1992 national championship with Lake Superior State under Jeff Jackson.

Six drafted players currently are on Notre Dame’s roster. The all-time drafted player total for the Irish is 85. At least one current or former Irish player has been selected in the draft every year since 2004.

Four Freshmen Added to Notre Dame Hockey Roster

Four freshmen will join Notre Dame for the 2020-21 season, said coach Jeff Jackson.

Four freshmen will join Notre Dame for the 2020-21 season, said coach Jeff Jackson. The newest players to lace up for the Irish are forwards Grant Silianoff, Landon Slaggert, Ryder Rolston and defenseman Zach Plucinski. Jackson said the following about his new players:

“This year’s freshman class may be small in number but it is talented and diverse in ability. I fully expect each player will contribute to our team this year; they each bring different strengths that will combine to make us a better team.”

All four players come from the USHL. Rolston hails from Birmingham, Michigan, and played last season with the Waterloo Black Hawks. Silianoff, an Edina, Minnesota, native comes from the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Plucinski is from Eagle River, Alaska, and the Omaha Lancers. Slaggert, the brother of current Irish forward Graham and associate head coach Andy, naturally comes from South Bend and is fresh off a tenure with the U.S. National Team Development Program.
