Saints add former Giants defensive end to their practice squad

The New Orleans Saints added another defensive end to their practice squad. Here’s what you need to know about Ryder Anderson:

The New Orleans Saints added another defensive end, announcing Thursday that Ryder Anderson had signed with their practice squad. Listed at 6-foot-6 and 276 pounds, Anderson played college football at Ole Miss and Indiana before turning pro in 2022; he had spent his NFL career to this point with the New York Giants.

He’s the second defensive end the team signed this week after releasing Niko Lalos, along with Trajan Jeffcoat, an undrafted rookie who tried out at Saints training camp earlier this year. They haven’t gotten enough production out of guys at the bottom of the rotation like Isaiah Foskey and even Cameron Jordan, so it makes sense to churn the depth chart and see if someone new can show something special.

And here’s an updated look at the Saints defensive ends group, ordered by snaps played:

  • Carl Granderson (453 in 9 games)
  • Chase Young (412 in 9 games)
  • Cameron  Jordan (248 in 9 games)
  • Payton Turner (147 in 8 games)
  • Isaiah Foskey (33 in 5 games)
  • Trajan Jeffcoat (PS)
  • Ryder Anderson (PS)
  • Tanoh Kpassagnon (PUP)

Giants sign two rookies, waive Ryder Anderson

The New York Giants have waived/injured Ryder Anderson, placed Yodny Cajuste on IR, and signed two undrafted rookies.

The New York Giants waived defensive lineman Ryder Anderson on Monday with an injury designation and placed offensive lineman Yodny Cajuste on injured reserve (IR). Both players were hurt in last Saturday’s preseason game in Houston.

In corresponding roster moves, they added two undrafted rookies to the roster — defensive lineman Kyler Baugh and linebacker Trey Kiser.

Baugh was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Minnesota this spring and was waived on August 14. He played 10 snaps in the Saints’ first preseason game.

Kiser was recently waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played his college ball at South Alabama.

Cajuste seemed unlikely to make the Giants’ regular season roster, but Anderson was likely a shoo-in. Should he clear waivers, he will revert to injured reserve (IR).

The Giants have one more preseason game, this Saturday night against the Jets before they have to trim their roster to 53 players next Tuesday.

How the Giants can replace DL Leonard Williams

The New York Giants need to replace Leonard Williams after trading him away on Monday and they have several in-house options.

The New York Giants traded veteran defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday in a move that was somewhat expected given Williams’ contract status.

The Giants didn’t get much cap relief as a result of the trade. In fact, they got very little. It is estimated they will only clear $647K of cap space by moving Williams.

They did, however, get a 2024 second-round and 2025 fifth-rounder in the process, so the trade appears worth it. They’re going nowhere this year and Williams is not in their long-term plans. This was a good deal for the Giants.

Who will replace Williams in the defensive line rotation is now the remaining question.

Dexter Lawrence has played 72 percent of the defense snaps followed by Williams at 70 percent, Rakeem Nunez-Roches (34 percent), and A’Shawn Robinson (33 percent).

D.J. Davidson has played 15 percent and rookie Jordon Riley only four percent. Riley has been a healthy scratch most of the season, only dressing for two games. He’s highly regarded by the team and this could be his big break.

It would make sense that Nacho (Nunez-Roches) and Robinson get a small bump in snaps but the real solution will likely come from the Oregon two — Davidson and Riley.

The Giants also have Ryder Anderson on the practice squad. Anderson was a final cut in trying camp this summer.

Giants injury update: D.J. Davidson activated from PUP

The New York Giants have activated DT D.J. Davidson from PUP and offered updates on several other injured players, including Collin Johnson.

Prior to practice on Monday, New York Giants defensive lineman D.J. Davidson passed his physical and was activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Davidson joins a suddenly deep group of interior defensive linemen, including rookie Jordon Riley, who played well in his NFL preseason debut.

Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) and cornerback Aaron Robinson (knee) remain on PUP with no timetable for return, although general manager Joe Schoen previously implied that Robinson could be activated this week.

The news on wide receiver Collin Johnson, who suffered a knee injury against the Detroit Lions, was also somewhat positive. His issue does not appear to be long-term.

“I don’t think it’s long-term, but I’m not a doctor, either,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters.

Johnson will not practice on Monday but right tackle Evan Neal (concussion) will take a step forward. He will participate in the non-contact portion of practice as he works his way back. However, Neal remains in concussion protocol.

Meanwhile, offensive linemen Devery Hamilton (leg) and Tyre Phillips (unknown), running back Gary Brightwell (ankle), linebacker Cam Crown (unknown), defensive lineman Ryder Anderson (triceps), and defensive back Nick McCloud (stomach) will not practice.

Finally, cornerback Cor’Dale Flott (abdominal) will practice after leaving Friday night’s preseason game against the Lions early. Nose tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches (groin) will also practice.

Report: Giants’ Ryder Anderson avoids season-ending injury

New York Giants DL Ryder Anderson suffered a triceps injury on Thursday but will reportedly avoid season-ending injured reserve.

The New York Giants are already a little thin along their defensive line with A’Shawn Robinson (knee) and D.J. Davidson (knee) on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, Rakeem Nunez-Roches dealing with a concussion and Vernon Butler on the reserve/injured list. Needless to say, they can’t really afford any additional injuries.

That’s why the entire team held its breath on Thursday when Ryder Anderson went down with what appeared to be a significant injury.

Just days after center J.C. Hassenauer landed on injured reserve due to a torn triceps, Anderson looked to be headed in that same direction. However, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports that Anderson avoided that same fate and will not miss the season.

Although Anderson did injury his triceps, which the team was already managing, he is not expected to be out long-term.

The Giants signed Anderson as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Indiana last May. He spent his first NFL season on both their practice squad and active roster, appearing in seven total games.

Although Anderson took just 152 defensive snaps (26 on special teams), he was able to record eight tackles (two for a loss), two QB hits and 2.0 sacks.

Anderson, who has become a favorite of his teammates, is currently battling for a roster spot in training camp.

Giants place Elerson Smith on IR, add Ryder Anderson to 53-man roster

The New York Giants have placed LB Elerson Smith on injured reserve and signed DL Ryder Anderson to their 53-man roster.

The New York Giants have placed linebacker Elerson Smith on season-ending injured reserve with an Achilles/heel injury.

Smith is expected to undergo surgery to remove a bone spur and the recovery time is four months. He should be available when minicamps start in 2023.

Replacing Smith on the roster is defensive lineman Ryder Anderson, who was signed from the team’s practice squad.

With an open spot on the practice squad, the Giants signed defensive tackle Jack Heflin.

The 6-foot-3, 304-pound Heflin was initially signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa in 2021. He spent his first season on their active roster before being relegated to the practice squad this season. He was released earlier this week.

Heflin has appeared in four career games (all in 2021) and recorded one tackle.

Giants place Azeez Ojulari on IR, elevate Landon Collins

The New York Giants have placed LB Azeez Ojulari on IR and elevated S Landon Collins in a series of roster moves.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”3DU1ww5VxP-2308998-7498″]

Earlier this week, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll sounded a bit reluctant to elevate safety Landon Collins from the practice squad. After all, he has accumulated just a handful of practices in Wink Martindale’s defense.

“We’ll give him some more reps this week. Again, like I said, he just got here, so we’ll see how he is conditioning-wise. We’ll see how he does with picking up the defense,” Daboll told reporters. “He’s been great, I’m glad we have him. We’ll just see where he’s at.

“Again, I think putting someone out there early or when they’re not ready — and I’m not saying he is or he isn’t — but I think that you just got to be fair to the player and make sure that they feel comfortable with where they’re at.”

Plans on Collins likely changed with news that linebacker Azeez Ojulari has been placed on injured reserve with a calf issue. He will now miss a minimum of four games.

Fellow linebacker Oshane Ximines is also out on Sunday.

To help fill the void left by the Ojulari and Ximines injuries, the Giants signed linebacker Quincy Roche from their practice squad to the 53-man roster. They also elevated defensive lineman Ryder Anderson alongside the aforementioned Collins.

Giants place Tony Jefferson on IR, elevate two from practice squad

The New York Giants have elevated two practice squad players and placed veteran DB Tony Jefferson (foot) on injured reserve.

The New York Giants have placed veteran defensive back Tony Jefferson on injured reserve with a foot injury. He will now have to miss the team’s next four games.

Jefferson joined the Giants in September after turning down several other teams in order to work with Wink Martindale. He appeared in three games this season and recorded five tackles (four solo).

With Jefferson going on IR and rookie D.J. Davidson also lost for the season with a torn ACL, the Giants now have two open spots on their 53-man roster.

Meanwhile, the team also elevated two practice squad players on Saturday but Landon Collins was not among them.

Defensive lineman Ryder Anderson and and wide receiver Marcus Johnson were the Week 6 elevations. For Anderson, it’s the first time this season he will be active on gameday.

However, for Johnson, this is the third and final time he can be elevated. The Giants will need to sign him to the 53-man roster in order for him to play again this year.

Both Anderson and Johnson will revert back to the practice squad following Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Giants trim roster to 53: A look at 5 surprising cuts

The New York Giants trimmed their roster down to 53 men on Tuesday and that required quite a few surprising cuts.

The New York Giants pared their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday to comply with the league mandate.

Here are some surprise cuts the team made in order to reach that number.

Giants defeat Bengals: Winners, losers and those in between

Here are the winners, losers and those in between from the New York Giants’ preseason Week 2 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

After a solid showing against the New England Patriots in Week 1 of the preseason, the New York Giants were back at it on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

Already down 18 players due to injury, the Giants quickly inflated that total. There were several notable injuries throughout the game, including to rookie edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Back on the field, New York’s reserves struggled against the Cincinnati Bengals initially, but rebounded strong and closed things out on another Davis Webb comeback.
