Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith takes subtle jab at Bulls legend Michael Jordan

Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith took a subtle jab at Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan with the in-arena WiFi name.

The Chicago Bulls ran the 1990s. More specifically, Michael Jordan ran the 1990s. His Bulls won six championships over the course of eight years, completely dominating the rest of the league. The only two years they didn’t win over that stretch was when Jordan retired to go play baseball.

For two years in a row, the Bulls took on the Utah Jazz in the Finals, and both years, they won. One of the two matchups produced one of the most iconic shots in NBA history when Jordan stepped back and nailed a mid-range shot to help clinch the 1998 Finals in Utah.

However, to this day, Jazz fans believe Jordan pushed off Bryon Russell en route to hitting the shot. Jazz owner and long-time fan Ryan Smith even named Utah’s in-arena WiFi after the moment, taking a subtle jab at Jordan in the process. (H/t The Pat McAfee Show)

Duke statistical leaders through four games

Does anyone on this list worry you?

There are few programs college football fans are buying more stock in right now than Duke. Maybe the only program that has turned more heads is the Deion Sanders-led Colorado. ESPN decided that there’s enough interest in the Blue Devils that the next episode of “College GameDay” will be broadcast from Durham. For once, people on Duke’s campus are excited and not about men’s basketball.

It is there that Notre Dame will play this weekend coming off the toughest of losses to Ohio State. The Irish will be facing a team trying to prove it’s for real and belongs with the best of college football. Plus, a raucous crowd at Wallace Wade Stadium likely will be waiting for them. Only they will be able to put a damper on the celebratory mood.

Here are the players who have gotten it done for the Blue Devils so far and will look to continue to do so against the Irish:

Northwestern’s Ryan Smith to coach Cardinals’ CBs

The Cardinals add a cornerbacks coach from the college ranks.

Names of defensive coaches are beginning to emerge for the Arizona Cardinals. Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis was announced and presented to the media on Wednesday.

The Cardinals are reportedly adding a cornerbacks coach from the college ranks.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Cardinals’ new cornerbacks coach will be Ryan Smith, the cornerbacks coach for Northwestern University.

Smith started coaching at Penn State in 2015 for two years as a defensive graduate assistant.

In 2017-2018, he was the secondary coach for Elon Unversity.

In 2019, he was the safeties coach and pro scouting liaison for James Madison and then was cornerbacks coach and passing game coordinator for Virginia Tech.

More on this storyline

Yet another illustration of Utah’s apparent willingness to let its current team land wherever it lands in the standings without trying to offload more talent in the wake of the Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell trades to prioritize draft position: One rival team official told me he thinks that the Jazz are more likely to extend organizational favorite Jordan Clarkson’s contract before they consider trading him. “They’re off to such a hot start, and they’ve got a lot of guys who are really confident,” the anonymous NBA scout told BasketballNews.com. “I’m a big Jordan Clarkson guy and he has really emerged. He’s always been a scorer, but I think he knows that he has to be good night in and night out and he has to lead the charge for this team. Lauri Markkanen is killing it, and I’m really happy for him. This is what we thought Lauri Markkanen would be when the Bulls took him [No. 7 overall]. It took some time, but this is the guy we thought he might become.” -via basketballnews.com / November 18, 2022

Bucs sign WR Tyler Johnson, CB Ryan Smith to practice squad

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are bringing back a couple of familiar faces to the practice squad

A pair of familiar faces are returning to One Buc Place.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed wide receiver Tyler Johnson and cornerback Ryan Smith to the practice squad, the team announced Monday.

Both Johnson and Smith were members of Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl-winning team back in 2020, and return to help bolster their depth on both sides of the ball with a healthy knowledge of the playbook.

The Bucs also officially placed outside linebacker Shaq Barrett on injured reserve.

Colts make practice squad moves

The Colts made some moves to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed linebacker Forrest Rhyne and punter Nolan Cooney to the practice squad and released wide receiver DeMichael Harris and cornerback Ryan Smith from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Rhyne signed with the Colts during the offseason as an undrafted free agent, and Harris has been on and off the practice squad for the last three years.

Cooney hasn’t played an NFL game yet and was an undrafted free agent in 2021. This is somewhat significant considering the poor performance from Matt Haack in Week 7 against the Tennessee Titans.

Colts sign CB Ryan Smith to the practice squad

The Colts made a change on the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed cornerback Ryan Smith to the practice squad and waived linebacker Forrest Rhyne from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Smith was in the building Monday for a workout, and it appears he did enough to warrant a spot on the practice squad.

Smith was a fourth-round pick with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2016 NFL draft out of North Carolina Central. He spent five seasons with the Buccaneers before joining the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021.

In 77 career games (17 starts), Smith has recorded one interception, 12 passes defended, 122 tackles (102 solo) and one tackle for loss. He has experience playing both defense and a prominent role on special teams.

How is the search for Quin Snyder’s …

How is the search for Quin Snyder’s replacement progressing? Ryan Smith: “I checked in [Monday] night and [Tuesday] morning, and I think Danny and Justin [Zanik] are doing a great job. I trust them and we trust them with 100% confidence. … The good news is, there’s a lot of phenomenal coaches in the NBA. “… Danny set [the timeline] up in the press conference. That was not my timeline — he was pretty direct on what that timeline would be. That’s what he’s here for — he’s here to lead, and my job is to empower him. … I’m really not [involved with early interviews], to be honest with you. I believe that you hire the best and you empower ’em. I don’t think there’s a better basketball brain than Danny, he’s definitely on the Mount Rushmore of NBA executives.”

How did he take the general fan disdain …

How did he take the general fan disdain for the rebrand/new jerseys? Ryan Smith: “Did they [react negatively]?” he began facetiously. “I love our fans. Fan is short for fanatic. We have an incredible fanbase. … If you take a step back, our goal with our rebrand is to say, first, we wanted to bring purple back. I know people say that’s an afterthought … [but] we’re gonna release four purple jerseys in the next 36 months. I also believe that we want to get a cleaner, simplified look … and have a unified color scheme that we can work with throughout the state. “The data showed that purple was the No. 1 purchase online, and then when people got into the store, it was black and yellow, which was interesting. Look, it’s an evolution. Brands are going to evolve. There’s probably a fair argument we went a little too clean. OK. But it will evolve.”
