Down 2 running backs, Texas considers position changes to bolster RB corps

With injuries to CJ Baxter and now Christian Clark, Texas is considering position changes to add depth to running back corps.

Last week, the Longhorns lost starting running back CJ Baxter to a season ending knee injury. This week, it’s Christian Clark. The freshman RB suffered what has been described as “a serious lower leg injury” during Monday’s practice.

Late Tuesday, University of Texas officials announced Clark suffered a torn Achilles and will miss the 2024 season.

Before Clark’s injury even happened, the Longhorns coaching staff were considering other options at running back. “We’re looking at some different options, and I think we’re looking at it creatively, whether it’s a couple of guys on the offensive side of the ball, a potential player on the defensive side of the ball, or two, for that matter,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday. ” … So we’re kind of taking it day by day again. We’ve got plenty of time. We’re just trying to get a sense and a feel of how, not only will they play on offense at the runner, but how does that impact us at other positions if we take a player.”

Clark wasn’t expected to be the primary replacement for Baxter. That duty will fall to junior Jaydon Blue. Blue was named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list last week, which is handed out annually to the nation’s most versatile player.

Texas has also brought in two running backs in each of the last two recruiting classes. Behind Blue, Sarkisian can turn to Quintrevion Wisner and Jerrick Gibson.

But with the loss of Clark, it’s depth at RB that has the Longhorns staff concerned. Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods reports that the coaching staff is considering moving freshman WR Ryan Niblett to running back.

Niblett is a redshirt freshman from Aldine Eisenhower in Houston. A 2023 All-American Bowl participant, Niblett was ranked No. 77 nationally, No. 12 among wide receivers and No. 16 overall in the state of Texas by Rivals. As a senior at Eisenhower, he caught 55 passes for 1,088 yards and 10 TD with an average of 108.8 receiving yards per game.

Coaches are also considering moving linebacker Derion Gullette to running back. Gullette played some offense in high school and is already taking snaps at RB at Longhorns practice. Texas’ depth at LB makes Gullette possibly more valuable on offense. Gullette could take on the roll of short-yardage power back.

Gullette, another redshirt freshman, went to high school at Teague in Marlin, TX. The former 4-star recruit starred at RB, but was also named first-team 3A All-State as both a WR and punter.

Another name being considered is safety Jelani McDonald. Out of Connally High School in Waco, McDonald was was a 4-star recruit ranked No. 204 nationally, No. 6 among athletes and No. 35 overall in the state of Texas by Rivals.

Playing on both slides of the ball, he was named the 11-4A Division 2 offensive MVP after running the ball 77 times for 852 yards and nine touchdowns and posting four separate games of 100 yards rushing.

WATCH: 2023 class represents Texas in the All-American Bowl

Texas is loaded with All-American talent.

Texas football has plenty to look forward to in the next few seasons. Five players, some of which might make an impact right away at Texas, took the field for the All-American Bowl on Saturday after sending six signees to the All-American Game.

Anthony Hill, Ryan Niblett, Payton Kirkland, S’maje Burrell and Tausili Akana represented the Longhorns 2023 class in the game. The group of players should play a crucial role for the team over the next four seasons. Four-star athlete Jelani McDonald also announced his commitment to Texas while at the game.

Hill, Akana and Burrell represent part of one of the best linebacker classes Texas has assembled in recent memory. Given the departures of DeMarvion Overshown and Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey, the class is much needed for depth and playing time.

Niblett and Kirkland continue the encouraging recruiting trends at their respective positions. Past coaches recruited bigger, slower receivers and smaller, quicker linemen. Texas is doing the opposite.

Niblett brings elite speed to Texas, while Kirkland is the big, imposing human that Kyle Flood looks for up front.

Here’s a look at the players that took the field for Texas in the game.

Report: Texas WR commit Ryan Niblett visiting Houston this weekend

Houston is working to flip Ryan Niblett from Texas.

Texas wide receiver commit Ryan Niblett is taking a recruiting visit to Houston over the weekend.

The four-star pass catcher is one of the more dynamic prospects in the nation. Niblett is listed as the No. 13 player in the state of Texas and the No. 11 wide receiver overall by the 247Sports composite rankings. He has picked up offers from the likes of Texas, Alabama, USC and many others.

Niblett is one of two wideouts currently committed to Texas, along with five-star Cedric Baxter Jr., in the 2023 class.

Texas staff might be in for a recruiting battle down the stretch with Dana Holgerson and the Houston Cougars for the talented wider receiver.

The early signing period in college football is right around the corner on Dec. 21. The Longhorns look to close out strong on the recruiting front for the second straight season.

Highlights from Texas commits over the weekend

Texas’ talented 2023 class started the new season on a high note.

High school football programs all over the country kicked off their 2022 season over the weekend.

Texas’ talented 2023 class started the new season on a high note.

Five-star Arch Manning lead his school to a 20-13 victory in their season opener. Manning completed a number of big passes and won the game with a late 20-yard touchdown run.

DeSoto’s Johntay Cook took his first catch of the season for a 68-yard score. Cook displayed the burners, outrunning the opposing secondary to set the tone.

Running back Cedric Baxter went off for 232 yards and a touchdown leading his school to a season-opening victory.

Four-star wide receiver Jonah Wilson started his senior campaign with a bang. He made a handful of spectacular plays and snagged two touchdowns for Dekaney High School.

The Longhorns’ 2023 class currently sits No. 2 in the nation behind the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Here is a look at some of the best highlights from Texas commits this weekend.

HOOKED: Texas lands commitment from four-star WR Ryan Niblett

Sark after dark strikes again as Texas lands their second commitment of the night!

Sark after dark is on a roll after what was a very eventful spring game.

In a game that means literally nothing in terms of how the 2022 season will actually go in terms of wins and losses, the Longhorns somehow manufactured a way to make sure that it does in fact matter.

Shortly after the commitment of four-star running back Tre Winser,  the 2023 class gained another member as four-star wide receiver Ryan Niblett took to Twitter to announce that he will also be joining Texas’ recruiting class.

Not only does he mark the second offensive commitment, but more importantly the 5-foot-10 speedster is the highest ranked player in the class of 2023 for Texas.

Niblett chose Texas over the likes of Alabama, Arkansas, Texas A&M, and Baylor among others. The Houston native ranks as the No. 52 overall player in the country, the No. 7 receiver, and the No. 10 overall player in the state of Texas.

Similar to the mold that we are seeing Steve Sarkisian gravitate towards, Niblett doubles as a track star at Aldine Eisenhower as he ran Ran a 10.58 100-meter and a 22.14 200-meter as a sophomore. He also earned Texas District 14-6A All-Purpose Player of the Year as a junior this past season.

He has been a do-it-all type of player in high school playing some quarterback, defensive back, returning kicks, and of course wide receiver which is where he will play in Austin. Niblett is apart of the receiver core of the future for Texas, who will eventually be losing the likes of Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington, and Isaiah Neyor to the NFL.

Texas’ strong barrage of offense during the spring game clearly had some influence on these two recent commits, and may help their standing with a few more influential recruits.

LSU offers 4-star wide receiver from Texas

Ryan Niblett is listed as the nation’s No. 52 prospect by 247Sports and Rivals.

LSU coach Brian Kelly continues to make offensive playmakers a priority in the 2023 recruiting class.

On Thursday, the Tigers offered Ryan Niblett, a 6-foot, 170-pound wide receiver from Houston, Texas. He plays his high school ball for Class 6A Aldine Eisenhower High School on an Eagles team that finished last season 3-7.

If there is one thing you can always use an abundance of, it’s playmakers. Niblett fits that mold. He plays wide receiver mostly, but he is also listed as a quarterback, so that could allow for some fun offensive trick plays on the Bayou if he decides to come to LSU.

With Kayshon Boutte probably leaving LSU as the potential No. 1 receiver taken in the 2023 draft, head coach Brian Kelly will be in search of athletes to fill the void that he will leave.
