7 quotes from Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald in Monday ESPN interview

Macdonald had several interesting things to say during his interview…

For years former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll made regular appearances on Seattle’s local ESPN radio affiliate (710 AM) on Monday mornings. It sounds like the team’s new head coach Mike Macdonald might be continuing that tradition, as he called into the station today.

Macdonald had several interesting things to say during his interview about his coaching staff and the direction of the team. Here are seven quotes from that conversation.

Seahawks finalize hiring of former Huskies OL coach Scott Huff

Ryan Grubb is the new Seahawks offensive coordinator and he’s bringing at least one friend with him.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, Seattle has finalized the hiring of former Washington offensive line coach Scott Huff to fill the same position on head coach Mike Macdonald’s staff.

Huff had been Washington’s OL coach since the 2020 season and before that (2017-2019) he was their offensive line/run game coordinator.

Fans who are thrilled by the news should keep in mind that the Huskies had arguably the best offensive line in the country last season. Meanwhile, the Seahawks had one of the worst in the NFL – and it will take time to build that unit up.

To start with, Seattle might consider targeting Huskies left tackle Troy Fautanu in the first round of the draft. Charles Cross had a promising rookie season but regressed in a bad way in 2023, especially in pass protection. Difficult as it is to swallow, finding potential replacements for Cross and right tackle Abe Lucas – who has a long-term knee injury – should be on the menu this offseason.

5 potential candidates to replace Ryan Grubb as Alabama’s next offensive coordinator

Alabama is in search of a new offensive coordinator after the news broke that Ryan Grubb was accepting the offensive coordinator position with the Seattle Seahawks. Roll Tide Wire takes a look at five potential candidates to replace Grubb.

It did not take long for Alabama’s offensive coordinator search to resurface. On Friday night, Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb accepted the offensive coordinator opening with the Seattle Seahawks.

With that being the case, Alabama is forced to find a new offensive play-caller. It will be the first time since 2019 that Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has an offensive coordinator not named Ryan Grubb.

Needless to say, it will be interesting to see which direction DeBoer decides to go. Will he stick with familiarity and promote from within? Will he look elsewhere?

Roll Tide Wire lists five potential candidates to replace Ryan Grubb as Alabama’s next offensive coordinator.

The Seahawks finally have their offensive coordinator.

The Seahawks finally have their offensive coordinator. After a two-week search led by new head coach Mike Macdonald, last night it was reported that the team would be hiring former Washington OC and current Alabama OC Ryan Grubb to replace Shane Waldron.

Grubb has been the most popular candidate throughout the hiring cycle, thanks to his strong body of work calling the plays for the Huskies offense over the last two seasons. As you can imagine, most Seattle fans are thrilled by the news – and not just to dunk on Kalen DeBoer. Here’s how 12s and other fans are reacting.

5 reasons Alabama football fans should not worry about the Ryan Grubb departure

No Alabama fans, losing Grubb isn’t as damaging as some will make it

It has been a tumultuous offseason for the fans of the Alabama Crimson Tide football program. First, legendary head coach [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] announced his retirement on Jan. 10, and in just a couple of days, Kalen DeBoer was introduced as the new head coach of the Crimson Tide.

Over the last month, Coach DeBoer has assembled one of the best coaching staffs in the country which offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb headlined. It is now being reported that Grubb is already leaving Tuscaloosa and heading back to Seattle to call plays for the Seahawks in the NFL.

Now Coach DeBoer is tasked with replacing his play-caller and while it seems like a massive problem for Alabama, I would implore Tide fans to relax. The truth is, it’s not nearly as big of a deal as many are making it.

Here is why:

Grubb just spent two years as Washington’s offensive coordinator, calling plays under head coach Kalen DeBoer. After Nick Saban retired from his position as head coach at Alabama, DeBoer took that job and Grubb followed him – but now will quickly be returning to Seattle.

Grubb did superb work running a pro style offense, helping Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. surge over the last two years and turn into a Heisman candidate.

Grubb won’t be coming alone, either. According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Alabama’s offensive line coach Scott Huff is expected to join Grubb on the Seahawks’ staff.

Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb accepts position as Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator

Alabama loses offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb to Seattle Seahawks just days after he confirmed that he would remain in Tuscaloosa.

In a surprising series of events, Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has accepted a position to become the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator. Grubb was slated to be Alabama’s play-caller during the 2024 season.

Grubb even cleared the air several days ago when speaking to the Red Elephant Club.

“I’m Ryan Grubb. I’m your new Offensive Coordinator.”

Grubb joined Alabama’s coaching staff soon after Alabama hired former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer. The two have worked together for the past 16 years. Now, DeBoer will be forced to find another play-caller as Grubb heads back to the Pacific Northwest to be a part of the Seahawks organization.

This could not come at a worse time for the Alabama football program. A Junior Day has passed. A handful of key targets on the offensive side of the ball were in Tuscaloosa for visits. Now, the offensive coordinator that was in charge of leading and developing a pass-centric offense at Washington is bound for the NFL.

It is a tough break. However, Alabama should be able to find a replacement in the near future as the rumors of Grubb leaving Alabama have been rampant the last several days. Now that things are official, Alabama can begin its search for the next offensive coordinator.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama football program and its search for a new offensive coordinator.

Could Ryan Grubb still leave for Seahawks despite Alabama comments?

According to Gregg Bell at the Tacoma News Tribune, Grubb’s comments do not officially eliminate him from consideration as Seattle’s OC.

The Seahawks are the only team in the NFL right now that doesn’t have an offensive coordinator on-staff. Seattle has been reported to be interested in several different candidates, including former Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb – who’s followed former Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama… or has he? Chip Kelly is the biggest name in the bunch, but Grubb is by far the most popular candidate to lead Mike Macdonald’s offense.

However hilarious it might be, the chances that Grubb might jump ship back to Seattle took a serious hit on Wednesday afternon when he told an Alabama crowd that he’s their new offensive coordinator.

Then again, that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t take the Seahawks job. According to Gregg Bell at the Tacoma News Tribune, Grubb’s comments do not officially eliminate him from consideration as Seattle’s OC.

In related news, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is officially out of the running for the job – he’s been given an assistant head coach promotion after getting blocked from interviewing for Seattle’s opening.

More as it comes.

Here is where we will be tracking reports of their interest in offensive and defensive coordinator candidates.

The most important hire that new Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald makes in the coming days is offensive coordinator. As eight new head coaches around the NFL begin to fill out their staffs for the 2024 season, Macdonald may have to move fast to secure his preferred choices for OC. So far, we have gotten word of a few candidates who may succeed Shane Waldron and Clint Hurtt as Seattle’s next coordinators.

Here is where we will be tracking reports of their interest in offensive and defensive coordinator candidates.

Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. is lighting up the Senior Bowl

Our No. 1 choice there would be Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

The Seahawks have a strong starting quarterback in Geno Smith, who has a relatively team-friendly contract considering his production. However, Smith’s age (33) and the arrival of a new head coach on the scene could mean that the team will look to replace him this offseason.

Our No. 1 choice there would be Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who led the nation in passing yards in 2023 and looks like he might be this year’s C.J. Stroud. Penix has sensational touch, accuracy and polish for a QB with his experience. This week he has been turning heads at the Senior Bowl. Here’s some of his best work in one-on-one drills.

Penix has also made some hair-raising throws in 11-on-11s.

Every NFL team that doesn’t have Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow or Josh Allen should be interested in drafting a solid young QB, and Seattle may be more intrigued than most.

Yesterday we learned that the team is considering hiring Ryan Grubb as their offensive coordinator. He just called plays for Penix at Washington for two years before following Kalen DeBoer to Alabama.
