Both the running game and passing game produced for the offense, with RB Nick Singleton rushing for 122 yards and 2 TDs, while QB Sean Clifford threw for 139 yards and 1 TD as the Nittany Lions easily covered as 11-point favorites. The defense also shined, holding a competent Maryland offense to 134 total yards (74 passing, 60 on the ground) in recording the shutout.

The Scarlett Knights are on a 3-game slide, most recently losing 27-21 as 10-point road underdogs last week to an underwhelming Michigan State team. Looking at all of the major stats, the game was just as close as the 1- possession score suggests. The Nittany Lions should beat Rutgers with just as much ease as they had in their previous 2 games. PSU has won the last 15 head-to-head games against Rutgers, dating back to 1989, and lead the all-time series 30-2.

Rutgers won’t snap the 15-game skid in this one. Penn State can attack in the running game, the passing game and on defense. The Scarlet Knights will simply be no match.

However, playing a -1400 favorite is not smart gambling at all.

Against the spread

BET PENN STATE -19.5 (-111).

The Nittany Lions are better so much better than the Scarlet Knights on offense and defense that you can feel confident in this bet.

The Lions need blowout wins if they wants to secure an NY6 Bowl Game, and they know it. Not only is Penn State more talented and more motivated, it is also 4-0 ATS in its last 4 conference games.

Over/Under

BET OVER 44.5 (-113).

Penn State will hit the Over by itself, scoring at least 45 points. The Over is 4-0 in the Nittany Lions’ last 4 road games.

We shouldn’t have to worry even if Rutgers fails to score. The Nittany Lions starters will build a hefty lead so they can rest by the middle of the third quarter, but expect the backups to contribute at least 1 or 2 touchdowns.

Rutgers comes into this matchup off a 52-17 loss to then-No. 4 Michigan last Saturday. This was its 5th loss of the season and its 5th in conference play. After coming out strong and leading 17-14 over Michigan at halftime, the Scarlet Knights were outscored 38-0 in the 2nd half.

Michigan State has gone through a lot in the 3rd year under Mel Tucker. The roller coaster season continued by beating Big Ten West favorite Illinois 23-15 last Saturday. The victory came with 8 players suspended for altercations after the Michigan game a week prior.

The Spartans will look to win this game to stay alive for a bowl berth. Something we did not expect to have to say after a 10-2 finish in 2021.

What Rutgers lacks on offense, it more than lacks on defense. Michigan put up 52 against the Scarlet Knights last Saturday, and the only reason it wasn’t more was due to scoring just 14 in the first half. The Wolverines clamped down and Rutgers did not score another point.

The Spartans are not the Wolverines. They do not have the luxury of starting slow. They will get out to an early lead and Rutgers will not be able to come back. MICHIGAN STATE -10 (-107) is my favorite play in this matchup.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 41 (-110).

If Rutgers were certain to score, I would take the Over in this game. With the Rutgers offense being as abysmal as it is, I cannot go that way.

Rutgers is starting QB Gavin Wimsatt, and he has not looked up to the task so far this season. Michigan State will swarm him and make his day miserable. The only reason this is not my favorite play is that the Spartans might just cover this number themselves. However, if Michigan State does not get to 30 points, this game does not hit the Over. I would rather put all my ATS wager, but if I were to make a play on the total, it would be UNDER 41 (-110).

Rutgers is a borderline top-50 team. Sacred Heart only faced one such foe last season when the Pioneers fell to Providence 92-64 on Nov. 11. Sacred Heart was in that game for long stretches, however: the Friars mostly led by 6-10 points until the final 5 minutes.

The Pioneers would be a lean getting +21.5 here if that play came at a discounted price (a -108 or better, for example). Otherwise, PASS.

Over/Under

The Pioneers and Knights last met in 2020 when Rutgers emerged with a 86-63 victory. The Over hit by 11.5 points, and that is the lean in this game.

Rutgers logged a few early-season games last season where point totals were a bit bloated. Sacred Heart won’t be able to stop the Knights from getting 80-plus in this one. Look for SHU to get enough offense against a widening RU rotation late.

The Wolverines have exceptional running backs when it comes to cranking out 2nd-level yards. Defending such is a strength for Rutgers, who a year ago held UM to 2.9 yards per carry in a 20-13 loss (Sept. 25, 2021).

However, figure the 2022 Michigan ground game to be a better one, and the Wolverines can throw, too (that cuts into a Rutgers deficit area). UM also takes care of the football; it has had just 5 turnovers this season.

Peg MICHIGAN -25.5 (-112) as a partial-unit play.

Over/Under

Both offenses sputter in the red zone, but Michigan’s red-zone defense has been excellent. Both teams want to run the ball, and while UM will look to bolster its CFP resume, it likely won’t look to get too cute and put too much on film.

Nebraska will prevail, but I’m not a fan of laying the -155 price. If you are not comfortable laying the 2.5 points, play the Cornhuskers ML, but be aware that it’s a bit of a pricier play.

Despite the better record, Rutgers is 0-2 in its conference schedule. Nebraska is 1-1 and coming off a nice victory over Indiana.

Home or road, it does not matter. I like Nebraska here. Rutgers offense is still not good, and the Cornhuskers will be able to outscore the Scarlet Knights and cover this number.

NEBRASKA -2.5 (-122) is my FAVORITE PLAY in this matchup.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 50.5 (-110).

Rutgers offense is bad. Its defense is not much better. Nebraska will be able to score in this one. The same will not be done in reverse. While Nebraska should do its part for the Over, Rutgers will not.

What can be said about the offenses of these 2 schools? Nothing. But the defenses for both is the reason these teams are any good.

In 3 games this far, Iowa has scored a total of 41 points. This includes a 7-3 victory over South Dakota State in Week 1 where they did not even score a TD (a FG and 2 safeties). The special teams of Iowa are incredible and have blocked 3 punts in the last 2 weeks. One of those blocks set up a 16-yard field which got the Hawkeyes their only points against rival Iowa State.

Rutgers is not much better on offense.

In Week 1, the Scarlet Knights put up 22 against Boston College. After scoring 66 in a meaningless game against Wagner, Rutgers only put up 16 points in barely beating Temple, a team in contention for the worst team in FBS football.

This game will be a punting clinic and points will be at a premium. So do not expect a lot of excitement. Unless you live for the olden days of 1900’s football.

The Temple Owls (1-1) welcome the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-0) to Lincoln Financial Field Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Rutgers at Temple odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Temple is coming into this game looking to hand Rutgers its first loss. The Owls lost to Duke 30-0 in their season-opener and then beat up on Lafayette 30-14.

Starting QB E.J. Warner threw for 2 touchdowns in that battle as Temple entered the intermission up 21-7. The freshman did not even have a single attempt against Duke as QB D’Wan Mathis led the team offensively.

Rutgers, which is typically on the lower end of the Big Ten programs in terms of finishing position, has yet to lose, beating Boston College by one in its opener. It then took down Wagner 66-7.

In its lone competitive game, it was starting RB Kyle Monangai that went for 78 yards and a touchdown and helped secure the win for the Scarlet Knights. Starting QB Evan Simon had just 63 passing yards in that battle.

No thanks on -1400 for a road favorite. The price is right for the books, but I’ll pass on betting it.

Against the spread

BET RUTGERS -18.5 (-112).

The Scarlet Knights played a tough game and figured out how to win against Boston College, but this game should be more focused on the inability of the Owls.

They have a freshman quarterback under center that really only took on a team that Temple was supposed to destroy. Going from Lafayette to a Power-5 program is not going to be smooth sailing.

It lost 30-0 to Duke, and it was a quick defeat as the Blue Devils took a quite lead and never looked back. Duke was up 24-0 at half. The Owls didn’t stand a chance and had just 66 yards on the ground.

Rutgers should have a better defensive front and more explosive offense than a Blue Devils team that just got by Northwestern last weekend. Experts predicted Northwestern as the worst in the West unanimously with some putting Rutgers over Indiana in a more competitive East.

Rutgers should be able to put this one away early. Also, side note: home-field advantage with how close Rutgers is to Philadelphia should help take that away from Temple.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 42.5 (-103).

Temple didn’t score against Duke, and I envision Warner having a difficult time moving on Rutgers. Warner also isn’t a dynamic running threat, so it’ll be interesting to see how he moves in the pocket against a more aggressive front.

Considering they didn’t score on Duke and scored just 9 points in the second half against Lafayette, a game they won by just 16, Temple should find it difficult scoring.

Similarly, Rutgers scored just 22 on Boston College and may also not have the most dynamic offense.

Given that, I’ll lean the UNDER 42.5 (-103).

Wagner starting QB Nick Kargman went for 2 touchdowns yet also had 2 interceptions with just over 200 yards. Kargman is a transfer from Western Michigan.

As for the Big Ten Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights are coming into this game having taken down 22-21. Rutgers went into the half down 14-6 but used a strong second half to stay undefeated.

The Scarlet Knights are led by starting RB Kyle Monangai who had a team-high 78 rushing yards. Rutgers had just 110 passing yards split among 2 quarterbacks.

There is certainly no value here. Upsets happen, and if this comes back on the board before kickoff, it’s not worth the risk.

Against the spread

LEAN RUTGERS -47.5 (-110).

Wagner allowed 38 points to Fordham, so when it plays a Power-5 program, the unthinkable could happen.

Rutgers should be able to run the score up, especially at home. Rutgers hasn’t beaten a program this badly since Morgan State in 2017, but it’s likely that this is a repeat of that brutal 65-0 beatdown.

The Scarlet Knights actually looked good with 322 yards and more than 200 of those coming on the ground. Wagner isn’t going to be able to keep pace in the trenches and should get ran over.

I’d bet on Rutgers to blow them out in this one, and the number dropped 4 points in your favor Saturday morning.

Over/Under

BET OVER 57.5 (-112).

Another way to bet on Rutgers is by backing the Over.

The Scarlet Knights went for 58 and 75 in their 2 non-Power 5 games last season. Having a significant edge in size on the offensive and defensive line, expect a strong showing that should be filled with lengthy runs.

Also Wagner’s Kargman was a three-star recruit, so he has some talent and should be able to get his side on the board, having scored 34 in their season-opening loss.

With Kargman hopefully getting Wagner a few scores, Rutgers dominant in the trenches and especially in the run game, expect a high-scoring battle.
