Michigan at Rutgers: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:55 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Michigan -400 (bet $400 to win $100) | Rutgers +300 (bet $100 to win $300)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Michigan -12 (-110) | Rutgers +12 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 52.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Michigan at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. Michigan lost its third consecutive game in a 49-11 stomping administered by Wisconsin last week. The Wolverines were down 28-0 at halftime, were outgained by 249 total yards and had 16 fewer first downs (26-10).
  2. Rutgers was upset 23-20 at home by Illinois and failed to cover as 5.5-point favorites. QB Noah Vedral threw three second-half interceptions, including a pick with 1:07 remaining that led to a game-winning field goal by the Illini.
  3. The Scarlet Knights took down the Wolverines in their first year in the Big Ten (2014), but Rutgers was a 3-point favorite. Michigan has been huge favorites since, winning the last five meetings—covering three—by an average of 43.8 points per game.

Michigan at Rutgers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Michigan 31, Rutgers 24

Money line (ML)

PASS on a Rutgers upset and no way I am laying that kind of price with this Michigan team. If the Wolverines lose their fourth straight, the football internet is going to unleash fury on head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Against the spread (ATS)

This ought to be a get-right spot for Michigan’s ground game, which has fallen off a cliff over its last two games, but I don’t see it. The Wolverines rushing attack had a combined 60 yards in its last two losses to Indiana and Wisconsin.

Rutgers gave up 141 rushing yards to Ohio State and 166 yards to Illinois but Ohio State is Ohio State and the Fighting Illini average the third-most rushing yards per game in the Big Ten (206.8).

The Scarlet Knights have double the stuff and sack rates as the Wolverines, according to Football Outsiders, so that’ll force Michigan’s first-year starter QB Joe Milton to be accurate. Milton’s accuracy versus Rutgers’ pass defense is TBD considering he’s 82nd in completion percentage but the Scarlet Knights are 113th in opponent’s completion percentage.

One last reason why I LIKE RUTGERS +12 (-110) for 1 unit is because the backdoor is wide open for a cover against this Swiss cheese Wolverines defense.

Over/Under (O/U)

Michigan’s defense has been one of the most disappointing units in the nation this season. The Wolverines are 90th in opponent’s points per game, 107th in opponent’s 3rd down percentage and 113th in opponent’s red-zone scoring percentage. Their defensive line is 93rd in opponent’s line yards per carry, 115th in stuff rate and 116th in sack rate.

Rutgers’ offensive numbers aren’t all that impressive but the Knights did put up 27 on Ohio State, albeit mostly in garbage time but an Over is an Over. If the game goes how BetMGM projects it to go then Rutgers will have plenty of opportunities to get garbage time points.

This Michigan pass defense was torched by mediocre defenses (Michigan State and Indiana) and would’ve been torched by Wisconsin last week but the Badgers decided to run over the Wolverines for 341 rush yards.

The combined Over/Under record of the two teams is 6-2 O/U this year and the Over is 6-0 in the last six meetings. GIMME OVER 52.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.

  • Money line: None listed because spread is too big
  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers +38.5 (-110) | Ohio State -38.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 64.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Ohio State: Three things to know

  1. Rutgers has covered the spread in only three of its last 11 home games. The Knights have also lost 20 straight games against Big Ten opponents.
  2. Against the number, the Buckeyes are 5-1 vs. the Knights since Rutgers joined the Big Ten. RU’s lone cover was last fall (Nov. 16) when OSU was a 52.5-point favorite in a 56-21 Buckeyes win in Piscataway.
  3. Rutgers won at Michigan State on Oct. 24, snapping a 12-game road losing streak. In their last trip to the Horseshoe (2018), the Scarlet Knights were defeated 52-3 and were outgained 579 yards to 134.

Rutgers at Ohio State: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Ohio State 49, Rutgers 21

Money line (ML)

None listed

Against the spread (ATS)

Ohio State (-38.5) has the overwhelming talent superiority in this matchup. The Buckeyes have a pro-style passing game clicking on all cylinders. Still, AVOID pegging OSU to cover such a big line. Fading any of the top two or three teams in any given year doesn’t make sense either. Move along to find better value elsewhere.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Buckeyes can get to half-a-hundred on their own, and much of the 2019 OSU defense is now playing on Sundays. Back the OVER 64.5 (-110).

Indiana at Rutgers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Indiana Hoosiers at Rutgers Scarlet Knights sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Indiana Hoosiers (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) travel to Piscataway, N.J., for a Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m. ET) game against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-0, 1-0). We analyze the Indiana-Rutgers college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Hoosiers are 19th in the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

  • Money line: Indiana -455 (bet $455 to win $100) | Rutgers +335 (bet $100 to win $335)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Indiana -11 (-110) | Rutgers +11 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 52.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Indiana at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. Indiana won last year’s meeting (Oct. 12) in shut-out fashion, with the Hoosiers blanking the Scarlet Knights 35-0. IU built a 21-0 lead by the mid-point of the opening quarter and with QB Michael Penix Jr. throwing three touchdown passes and the Hoosiers piling up 260 yards on the ground, Indiana boat-raced Rutgers to the finish line. The Hoosiers held RU to an 0-for-11 mark on third downs and they outgained the Knights 557 yards to 75. Rutgers had one passing yard in the contest.
  2. Both teams got off to a good start in the Big Ten’s COVID-19-delayed opening Saturday a week ago. Indiana defeated ranked Penn State 36-35; Rutgers topped Michigan State 38-27. RU’s win was in East Lansing, Mich., and it marked the Knights’ first road win since Oct. 14, 2017.
  3. Last season, IU earned against-the-spread wins on the road at Nebraska, Michigan State, and Penn State — all venues that figure to be tougher tests abroad than a game at Rutgers, but the Hoosiers were underdogs in those games. They failed to cover as road favorites at Purdue and Maryland.

Indiana at Rutgers: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Indiana 34, Rutgers 17

Money line (ML)

The straight up tag is laced with extra juice, enough so to figure the true odds as being well bracketed. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

In last year’s ATS loss at Purdue, Indiana was facing a rival and the Hoosiers let a 28-10 lead slip away.  The Boilermakers had two fourth-quarter scoring drives measure up to less than 30 yards combined. At Maryland, IU outgained the Terrapins, 520 yards to 383, and missed a push by a half-point.

Last week against a Michigan State program which figures to struggle in 2020, the Knights committed three turnovers and were still a plus-four in turnover margin. RU was outgained by nearly 100 yards in total offense.

INDIANA -11 (-110) has the much better offense and the stronger recruiting base and is worth backing in Saturday’s road tilt.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Indiana ATS play is the strongest play for this game. The UNDER 52.5 (-110) HAS A MODERATE LEAN, but consider waiting out a total of 53 points.
