3 good things that came out of the Falcons’ 2019 season

There are 31 teams that aren’t happy with how they fared in 2019, but that’s just the nature of the NFL.

The 2019 season was a tale of two halves for the Atlanta Falcons. After a 1–7 start, the team went 6-2 down the stretch to finish the year with a 7-9 record.

As a whole, the Falcons’ season was a failure. However, that doesn’t mean there weren’t some bright spots that bode well for the team going forward.

Here are three good things to come out of Atlanta’s frustrating year.

Kicker: Younghoe Koo

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

The decision to cut Matt Bryant and sign Younghoe Koo when the team was 1-7 seemed questionable at the time, but Koo was outstanding over the final eight weeks of the season. He went 23-for-26 on field goals, 15-for-16 on extra point attempts and won two NFC Special Teams Player of the Week awards.

Koo also helped the team convert two onside kicks and recovered a fumble in the eight games he played. While the Falcons have yet to commit to Koo as their long-term kicker, it’s certainly his job to lose in 2020 after a strong showing in 2019.

Falcons’ receiving corps ranked No. 13 by Pro Football Focus

Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley should be one of the NFL’s best one-two punches at wide receiver in 2020. Jones is still producing at an elite level, while Ridley has put up 1,687 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons.

Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley should be one of the NFL’s top one-two punches at wide receiver in 2020. Jones is still producing at an elite level, while Ridley has put up 1,687 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons.

Outside of those two, there are some questionable receiving threats with the departure of Austin Hooper, who finished the year with the second-most catches (75) on the team.

Pro Football Focus released their rankings of every team’s receiving corps entering the 2020 season, and Atlanta was listed at No. 13:

Any time you have a top-two like Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley, it’s hard to drop a team too far on this list. Jones has been the highest-graded wide receiver in the NFL over the past five seasons and the undisputed champ of our yards per route run metric. Ridley has gotten off to a solid start to his career with grades of 68.8 and 74.9 in his first two seasons and should continue to improve next season. The problem is that the Falcons don’t have much behind those guys. Hayden Hurst should do a solid job of replacing Austin Hooper’s production, but the depth chart at wide receiver quickly falls to relatively unproven options like Russell Gage and Laquon Treadwell.

Russell Gage may be the player outsiders are sleeping on. He’s developed nicely over two seasons, catching a career-high 49 catches for 446 and one touchdown in 2020.

Plus, Hayden Hurst is bound to make a big statistical jump as the No. 1 tight end in a pass-happy offense. As for former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell, he won’t have to deal with the pressure of his draft expectations in Atlanta.

3 factors that could make or break the Falcons in 2020

No NFL team is without flaws when the season begins, although some have more concerns than others.

No NFL team is without flaws when the season begins, although some have more concerns than others. After missing the playoffs in 2018 and 2019, the Atlanta Falcons were more aggressive this offseason.

The team moved on from six of last year’s starters, and signed some of the biggest names on the free-agent market. Still, there are a few question marks surrounding the Falcons’ 2020 roster.

Here are three factors that could determine Atlanta’s success or failure this season.

Is Todd Gurley healthy?

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

After the Rams bit a $10 million bullet by releasing running back Todd Gurley, the Falcons swooped in and landed the 25-year-old All-Pro on a one-year, $5.5 million contract. Gurley replaces Devonta Freeman — who wasn’t the same last season — in an attempt to improve a running game that averaged just 85.1 yards per contest in 2019. But is Gurley healthy? Last season, he averaged 3.8 yards per carry and didn’t look anywhere close to the player he was in previous seasons.

Even in a down year, however, Gurley still went over 1,000 all-purpose yards and accounted for 14 touchdowns. With a left knee that’s been rumored to be arthritic, it’s worth wondering if the former first-round pick can get back to being the play-maker that nearly won the NFL’s MVP award two years ago. The Falcons had numerous chances to select a running back in the 2020 NFL Draft but opted against it, indicating the team is confident that Gurley will return to form.

Dan Quinn believes McGary, Lindstrom will ‘take a huge step’ in 2020

Quinn highlighted Chris Lindstrom, Kaleb McGary and Russell Gage as players he thinks will make significant progress next year.

The Atlanta Falcons have a lot riding on next season. After two disappointing finishes, owner Arthur Blank elected to retain GM Thomas Dimitroff and head coach Dan Quinn. To validate Blank’s trust, the team must get back on the playoffs in 2020.

Speaking with Falcons reporter Matthew Tabeek, Quinn laid out his expectations for some of Atlanta’s younger players. He highlighted Chris Lindstrom, Kaleb McGary and Russell Gage as players he thinks will make significant progress next year.

“I’m very excited to see the development at both right guard and right tackle with McGary and Lindstrom,” said Quinn. “I think these guys are going to take a huge step going into year two.”

Fantasy football wavier wire targets after Week 15: An opportunity with a Vikings RB

Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison are both injured.

It’s finals week for fantasy football owners.

Most of you won’t be scouring the waiver waiver for targets, but it’s always good to be thorough — just in case a waiver wire player has to potential to beat out your flex option. It’s probably smart to trust the players on your roster, but if you dealt with an injury in Week 15 (like Dalvin Cook), it’s good to see what’s out there.

Let’s keep it tight and include players you would only consider starting — because, of course, there’s no more runout beyond this week (unless you play in the rare league that lasts through Week 17). A player like Patriots WR N’Keal Harry may have upside, but you’re (hopefully) not in a place where you’d need to start him. So here are a few names to consider.

5. Indianapolis, DEF

ESPN: 43%. Yahoo! 27%.

They’re a good defense, and they’ve got the Carolina Panthers and quarterback Kyle Allen, who has 5 INTS in the last two games, in Week 16. That’s a juicy matchup.

4. Philip Rivers, QB, Chargers

ESPN: 43%. Yahoo! 59%.

Maybe Rivers has had a lackluster season, but he’s playing the Oakland Raiders, who have allowed huge performances from opposing quarterbacks.

3. Tyler Higbee, TE, Rams

ESPN: 28%. Yahoo! 67%.

He might be Jared Goff’s top target at this point. What a weird season it has been for the Rams in 2019.

EPA-EFE/RICK MUSACCHIO

2. A.J. Brown, WR, Titans

ESPN: 67%. Yahoo! 72%.

He has been an absolute monster in 2019 — especially with Ryan Tannehill at quarterback. Brown finished Week 15 with eight catches, 114 yards and a touchdown.

1. Mike Boone, RB, Vikings

ESPN: 0%. Yahoo! 0%.

Alexander Mattison is dealing with an ankle injury. Dalvin Cook left Week 15 with a re-aggravated shoulder injury. Boone may end up the feature back in Week 16 against the Packers, who have allowed a 25th-worst 122.8 rushing yards per game going into Week 15. If Mattison is available, he would also be worth a pickup. Whoever starts at RB for Minnesota has RB1 potential.

4 key matchups to watch as Saints play Falcons on Thanksgiving

Matchups like Marshon Lattimore versus Julio Jones will define Thanksgiving’s game between the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons.

The New Orleans Saints are travelling to play the Atlanta Falcons on Thanksgiving night, headlining the NFL’s slate of prime time games. After a  devastating 26-9 loss to the Falcons back in Week 10, the Saints are looking for revenge against their NFC South rival on Thanksgiving. A Saints victory would clinch the team’s third consecutive NFC South division title and mathematically eliminate the Falcons from playoff contention.

There will be several key matchups to watch this Thanksgiving; we’ve highlighted four of them. If New Orleans can exploit and win these one-on-one battles, the Saints should be the team eating turkey legs at the end.

Falcons WR Julio Jones vs. Saints CB Marshon Lattimore

Let’s start this with a caveat, by noting that this matchup only occurs if both players are healthy enough to go on Thanksgiving. Lattimore has missed his last two games with a hamstring injury, and Jones will be a game-time decision with a shoulder issue.

Fortunately for the Saints, Lattimore has been lockdown in coverage this season — when healthy. The star cornerback held Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans to zero receptions and as many yards back in Week 5., and matched up well against Jones in Week 9 when Atlanta visited the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. During that matchup, Jones was held to three receptions and 79 yards. If Lattimore’s hamstring holds up, then Jones should have a tough time being a producing for the Falcons receiving corps on Thursday.

Falcons WR Russell Gage named fantasy sleeper for Week 13

Russell Gage recorded just six catches for 63 yards as a rookie but topped both totals in Sunday’s game, finishing with eight catches for 76 yards.

After trading Mohamed Sanu to the Patriots, the Falcons needed to find someone on offense to fill his role as the team’s slot receiver.

Tight end Austin Hooper, who’s having a breakout season, injured his knee a few weeks ago. This has opened the door for second-year WR Russell Gage, Atlanta’s sixth-round pick from the 2018 draft. Gage recorded just six catches for 63 yards as a rookie. In Sunday’s loss to the Bucs, he finished with a career-high eight catches for 76 yards.

Gage has 21 catches over the past four games. With the Falcons extremely dinged up at tight end, defenses aren’t going to take their eyes off of Calvin Ridley or Julio Jones.

That means Gage will have a chance to develop a role in this offense over the final five weeks of the season. The fantasy football world has noticed, too. In Pat Yasinskas of TD Wire’s 9 fantasy sleepers for Week 13 feature, Gage was the first player mentioned:

Gage could be a good player to start in the Thanksgiving night game with the Saints. He gradually has taken on a bigger role in the offense because so much defensive attention goes to Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. Gage had eight catches for 76 yards in Sunday’s loss to Tampa Bay. He should play a bigger role going forward.

Fantasy players are weary of getting burned by this Atlanta offense. Brian Hill failed to live up to his sleeper status two weeks ago, then Matt Ryan struggled against the Buccaneers’ 32nd-ranked scoring defense in Week 12.

Gage’s production was anticipated after the team traded Sanu, though, and we know Ryan likes to spread the ball around.

There’s no reason he shouldn’t continue to get around five catches per game and improve on his yardage totals. Don’t surprised if Gage has another career game on Thanksgiving night against the Saints.

9 fantasy sleepers for Week 13

Sam Darnold, Benny Snell Jr. and LeSean McCoy highlight the Week 13 list of fantasy sleepers.

In most fantasy football leagues, Week 13 is the final week of the regular season. You might be desperate for a win and need one sleeper to put you over the top.

Or you might already be well set for the playoffs. Even if you are, you should be looking to add as much depth as possible for the postseason.

Either way, Touchdown Wire presents nine fantasy football sleepers for Week 13.

9. Russell Gage, WR, Atlanta Falcons

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Gage could be a good player to start in the Thanksgiving night game with the Saints. He gradually has taken on a bigger role in the offense because so much defensive attention goes to Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. Gage had eight catches for 76 yards in Sunday’s loss to Tampa Bay. He should play a bigger role going forward.

7 waiver wire pickups in fantasy football for Week 13

Waiver wire pickups for Week 13.

Week 12 in the NFL brought a lot of teams that were flying high down to reality. With many talented players on a bye week, it provided lineup issues and possibly even last second waiver wire adds.

Some leagues have playoffs starting this week while others will begin over the next few weeks. Even so, the waiver wire will be important with handcuffs and injuries at the most important positions.

With trade deadlines having passed, here are the top waiver-wire pickups for Week 13:

(Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports)

RB Rashaad Penny — 29.1% rostered (ESPN)

Penny finally had his breakout career game on Sunday against Philadelphia as he finished with 14 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown. The Seahawks have shown to give a lot of attention to the run in recent weeks but with Chris Carson still having issues holding on to the ball, Penny will be a more focused piece of this offense.

We aren’t at the point where the former first-round pick will be taking over the backfield, but head coach Pete Carroll hinted that more of a timeshare could be on the way in Seattle.

With a Monday night matchup against Minnesota on the horizon, look for Seattle to use Penny and other offensive pieces as they try to keep pace with San Francisco in the division race.

Chasing Ambulances

Week 12 was the most injury-free slate of games that I can remember. Julio Jones hurt his shoulder but went back into the game. Dwayne Haskin’s wrist may be an issue, but he’s already a terrible fantasy play anyway and the Skins would likely benefit reverting to Case Keenum.

Mason Rudolph was benched and Devlin Hodges played better, but the Steelers already struggle when they pass and Hodges is no late-season savior.

There wasn’t an injury that would spawn any meaningful depth chart changes. And that’s likely to repeat until the end of the season because those who were going to get injured, already have. And everyone else is already banged up by now anyway.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

RB Jonathan Williams – The Colts will still miss Marlon Mack for a few more weeks and Williams followed up his surprise 147-yard Week 11 performance with 121 yards and a touchdown last Thursday in Houston. This week at home against the Titans holds a lot of promise.

WR Will Fuller – Missed five games but his first Sunday back and he posted seven catches for 140 yards against the Colts. The next two games go against the Patriots and Titans, so he’s likely to crawl back under the rock.

WR Russell Gage – Hasn’t scored this year but turned in a season-best eight catches for 76 yards in the loss to the Falcons. Notable is that while his two previous games were mediocre and on the road, his only previous homestand since  Muhammad Sanu left was when he caught seven passes for 58 yards. The Falcons play at home versus the Saints and Panthers for the next two weeks.

RB Qadree Ollison – The Falcons rookie power back totaled only 13 touches over the last two games but they were the first with him playing and he scored a touchdown in each.

QB Brian Allen – The Broncos quarterback was held to only 10-of-25 completions for 82 yards and one interception in the loss to the Bills. The Broncos 2.10 draft pick of Drew Lock is practicing again after spending the season on injured reserve because of a wrist injury. He’ll be starting sooner than later and the next three opponents are LAC, @HOU, and @KC. The Broncos will lose, but it could be a good experience for Lock who is bound to throw for more than 82 yards.

WR Sterling Shepard – Returned from his serious concussion and ended with five receptions for 15 yards in the loss to the Bears. This week hosting the Packers isn’t a great matchup, but the Giants will face the Eagles, Dolphins, and Redskins after that.

WR Allen Robinson – Just posted six catches for 131 yards and a score against the Giants. He’s done well only when facing weaker defenses and usually at home. With an ending schedule of @DET, DAL, @GB, KAN, and @MIN he’s going to be very hard to rely on again.

RB Benny Snell – With James Conner sidelined, Snell was given another start and he ran for 98 yards on 21 carries at the Bengals. His only other start was Week 6 when he posted 89 total yards at the Chargers. Keep an eye on the Conner situation because the Steelers face the Browns and Cardinals next. Jaylen Samuels wasn’t a factor and he comes into play only as a receiver when the Steelers are facing a tough defense and need to dump the pass off to a running back. Conner (shoulder) never practiced last week so he may miss a second game.

QB Baker Mayfield – Comes off a season-high 327 yards and three touchdowns in the win over the Dolphins. Mayfield has been a major disappointment to many, but the Browns slogged through a murderous schedule. Mayfield threw for two or more scores in the last three weeks (all at home).  He plays at the Steelers this week but then faces the Bengals and Cardinals.

WR D.J. Moore – The Saints were without CB Marson Lattimore in Week 11 but still held Mike Evans to only 69 yards on four catches and that was in Tampa Bay. But this week in New Orleans, Moore turned in six receptions for 126 yards and two scores for a career-best performance. Moore’s first score was on a 51-yard catch and run.

RB Josh Jacobs – was held to only 34 yards on ten carries and only caught one pass for two yards. The rookie merely went through his first NFL trash game and Derek Carr only threw for 127 yards and no scores. They were also likely thinking ahead to this week in Kansas City.

QB Sam Darnold – He passed for 315 yards and two scores and even ran in a touchdown. That came on the heels of 293 yards and four touchdowns last week at the Redskins. Granted, the Skins and Raiders didn’t feature top secondaries, but neither will the  Bengals and Dolphins the next two weeks. Even Robby Anderson (4-86, TD) came to life.

RB Rashaad Penny – Chris Carson is the starter, but he only gained 26 yards on eight runs while Penny became the “hot hand” at the Eagles and ran for 129 yards on 14 carries. Penny never had a catch while Carson ended with four receptions for 31 yards. There’s no changing of the depth chart and this is the same back that only gained two yards last week while Carson turned in 101 yards and a score at the 49ers.

RB Bo Scarbrough – The Week 11 surprise took his second start and ran for 98 yards on 18 carries. He still has not caught a pass and realize that he’ll be facing the Bears, Vikings, and Buccaneers next. That won’t be nearly so accommodating.

RB Derrius Guice – The Skins 2018 draft pick only managed ten runs for 32 yards at home versus the Lions who brought the No. 32 defense against running backs. With Dwayne Haskins as the starter, this offense has lost all punch. The out schedule is worse but there is a chance that Haskin’s wrist is bad enough to bring back Case Keenum.

RB Leonard Fournette – He ran for 97 yards and two scores plus caught nine passes for 62 yards in the loss in Tennessee. It was his only score since Week 5 and these last two weeks with Nick Foles as the starting quarterback resulted in season-high seven and nine catches, respectively.

Huddle player of the week

Chris Godwin  –  The only safe fantasy play is to start both Mike Evans and Chris Godwin if you could somehow draft both because you’re probably going to receive a monster game from one of them every week. Never both. And a tough call as to which one will go off. But this week, Godwin led all fantasy scorers with seven receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He was already one of the best sleeper types and now helped win many fantasy games this week.
