Three bold predictions for Alabama’s matchup with Texas A&M

Three bold predictions for Alabama’s matchup with the Texas A&M Aggies!

No. 1 Alabama will look to stay undefeated as they head to College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies. The Aggies have suffered defeats the last two weeks. First against Arkansas, then against Mississippi State.

Don’t let their record fool you, Texas A&M still has a very talented roster and is capable of making this game ugly. However, it does seem like A&M may be playing its worst football of the season and Alabama seems to be finding its rhythm.

Anything can happen in a matchup between two programs like Alabama and A&M, but here are my three bold predictions for the contest.

First … the Alabama rushing attack

What Nick Saban said on Wednesday leading up to Texas A&M

What Alabama football coach Nick Saban said in his Wednesday press conference leading up to the matchup with Texas A&M.

No. 1 Alabama is set to travel to College Station this Saturday to take on Jimbo Fisher and the Texas A&M Aggies. The Aggies have lost their last two contests and have been maybe this biggest disappointment in the SEC this season.

Nick Saban held his weekly Wednesday afternoon press conference earlier today and here are some quick hitters from the head coach.

  • He emphasized how important it was for players to be able to generate their own want-to.
  • He mentioned that Texas A&M is one of the best teams they have played this season from a personnel standpoint.
  • According to Saban, Dallas Turner, and Chris Braswell have a lot of potential and they are now getting the reps due to the injury to Drew Sanders.
  • He acknowledged how smart Chris Owens is both on and off the field.
  • On correcting the high snap issues from center to quarterback, Saban compared it to putting, in that you just have to focus on what you are doing.
  • He expressed the confidence the coaching staff has in Roydell Williams in the absence of Jase McClellan.
  • On Texas A&M tight end Jalen Wydermyer, Saban said that he is a very difficult matchup because of his size and athleticism.

What each of the 3 available RB’s bring to the Alabama backfield

Taking a closer look at what each of the three available scholarship backs brings to the Alabama backfield.

The injury to sophomore running back Jase McClellan has stirred up a series of questions surrounding the depth of the Alabama backfield. Currently, Alabama sits with just three healthy scholarship backs in Brian Robinson Jr., Roydell Willams, and Trey Sanders.

Head coach Nick Saban has mentioned that an emergency option candidate is being explored on an as-needed basis. With all the talented athletes across the depth chart in Tuscaloosa, I am not even going to begin to guess who could possibly fill that role. But what I can do is take a more in-depth look at each of the three backs that are still available and what skill set they bring to the Tide offense.

Here is the breakdown of the three scholarship backs.

First … the battle-tested senior

Alabama football: Grading Alabama’s commanding win over Southern Miss

Here’s our final grade for Alabama’s commanding victory over Southern Miss!

No. 1 Alabama dominated its inferior opponent in Southern Miss on Saturday night with a 63-14 victory. Alabama was able to control all three phases of the game and provided its most complete performance of the season.

Each week we give a grade out for all three phases of the game, let’s see how the team did this week!

OFFENSE: A+

Gary Cosby-USA TODAY Sports

The Alabama offense, led by Bryce Young put together its most balanced performance of the season. The lack of a consistent running game through the first three games of the season had started to become a cause of concern for this team. Even though Southern Miss doesn’t have the type of players Alabama will face in the SEC, it was nice to see the offensive line open up holes for the backs and the backs make some explosive plays in the run game.

Roydell Williams led all rushers with 110 yards on 11 carries for an average of 10 yards per carry. Williams also had a run of 55 yards in the first half. Jase McClellan added another 98 yards on the ground, which included a long of 27.

Bryce Young displayed his pinpoint accuracy going 20-22 passing for 313 yards and 5 touchdowns. Junior tight end Jahleel Billingsley showed off his talents by catching 5 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown.

Alabama was able to play several young players late in the contest. True freshman quarterback Jalen Milroe was able to record his first career touchdown pass on Saturday night with a 24-yard rope to Javon Baker.

The Alabama offense seems to be finding its groove at just the right time!

DEFENSE: A-

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

Like the offense, the Alabama defense put together a much-needed consistent performance. The 14 points allowed are a little more than most fans would have wanted, but the Tide defense gave up just over 200 yards to the Golden Eagles and just 3.7 yards per play.

The defensive line had its best performance of the season and some depth may have been discovered in players such as Jamil Burroughs and LaBryan Ray.

Will Anderson continues to dominate racking up three tackles for loss and one sack.

The Tide defense will need to bring its best effort next Saturday against Lane Kiffin and the high-powered Ole Miss offense.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A+

Gary Cosby-USA TODAY Sports

Not much to say here, Jameson Williams returned two kickoffs for a touchdown. Anytime you put points on the board from one of the special team’s units, things are going pretty well.

Nick Saban and special teams coordinator Drew Svoboda have to be pleased with the efforts of the special team units so far this season.

OVERALL: A-

Although the opponent was not the best, the Tide delivered its most complete performance of the season. Both sides of the ball handled the line of scrimmage and the skill position players made plays.

We got a taste of how good this Alabama team could be, let’s see if they can build off this week’s performance and rise to the occasion against a talented Ole Miss team.

Alabama football position preview: Running backs

Alabama’s depth at running back could prove to be a vital piece of another run at a championship.

One of the deepest position groups on the team this season is the running back group. While there isn’t a guy who has superstar status like Najee Harris had last season, there is still plenty of talent and depth.

Let’s take a look!

Which Alabama RB will breakout in 2021?

The Alabama running back room used to be dominated by Najee Harris, but with him now in the NFL who will take over as the lead back?

Alabama has had some great running backs come and go over the years. Crimson Tide ball carriers usually end their collegiate careers as household names across the country; whether it’s Heisman winners Derrick Henry and Mark Ingram, or recent stars such as Damien Harris and Najee Harris.

With Harris being selected No. 24 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2021 NFL draft, Alabama now has somewhat of a power vacuum at the tailback position.

In recent years, the running back room has seen the ball spread around a decent amount, and when the top guy departs from the program, the next guy moves up. However, that was not the case in 2020.

Harris accumulated 1,466 yards and 26 touchdowns on 251 attempts. The running back with the next-highest stats: Brian Robinson with 91 carries.

Now, 91 is still a sizeable number of carries, but it does not compare to what Alabama has done in the past.

For example, the last time Najee Harris was not the starting running back for Alabama, he was the third-string back behind Josh Jacobs and Damien Harris.

Despite being a sophomore behind two current NFL starters on the depth chart, Najee still got 117 carries.

With those high level of reps second-string and third-string players often get, Crimson Tide fans know what to expect in the upcoming seasons when those players move up the depth chart and are then the starters.

Mike Rodak of AL.com projects the starting running back will be Brian Robinson, who was a four-star product out of Tuscaloosa in the 2017 recruiting class.

Robinson has shown flashes of potential, but has never been able to compete with those that sat above him – most of whom are now starting in the NFL.

Then, according to Rodak, sophomore Roydell Williams, a 2020 four-star Alabama native, could get a solid amount of looks based on his production.

Williams is likely a new name to Alabama fans, but he soon won’t be. He is a great horizontal runner that can cut at the line of scrimmage and is shifty enough tomake linebackers miss. To top it all off, he’s got the breakway speed to give you a guaranteed six points if he can get through the secondary.

In Alabama’s spring game, Williams carried the ball 12 times for 45 yards.

I predict Williams will become the starter for Alabama long before anyone anticipates.

After Williams, Rodak includes Jase McClellan, who saw some action in 2020, Keilan Robinson, who has began transitioning to wide receiver, and Trey Sanders, the former five-star who has dealt with injuries over the last two years.

Projecting Alabama’s Post-Spring Offensive Depth Chart

Here are the offensive depth chart projections for the Alabama football team following spring practice.

The Alabama A-Day Game took place this past Saturday, which means spring practice has officially come to an end in Tuscaloosa. The White team won 13-10, but there are way more important takeaways

There were some injuries that kept us from seeing certain guys participate in the spring, but we now have a much better idea for how the depth chart will look come fall camp opening up in August.

Once again, these are projections come from Roll Tide Wire. Like always, we’ll start with the offensive side of the football. Do you agree or disagree with the following list and its order?

Alabama football countdown: 23 days until kickoff

We are 23 days from Alabama football kicking off its season on the road against the Missouri Tigers to start a 10-game, SEC only schedule.

There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding college football over the last couple of weeks, but as of right now, the season still looks like it’s a go for the SEC, ACC and Big 12.

So, what does that mean? It means that we can continue the Countdown to Kickoff en route to the Crimson Tide — and the rest of the SEC — getting things underway on Sept. 26.

With it now being Sept. 3, we are officially 23 days away from the start!

Two players currently wear the No. 23 for Alabama. Outside linebacker Jarez Parks, who is now entering his third season in Tuscaloosa, has worn the number since he arrived on campus prior to the 2018 season.

But now, true freshman running back Roydell Williams, a four-star, top 100 prospect out of Hueytown (Ala.), now rocks the No. 23 as the offensive player with that number.

Alabama player snapshot: No. 23 Roydell Williams

Freshman running back Roydell Williams is the next man up on Alabama football’s player snapshot, which highlights each scholarship player.

As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire has decided to bring fans a quick snapshot of each scholarship player listed on Alabama’s 2020 football roster.

Each day, we’ll release two player profiles giving fans a glimpse into the players who will be available this upcoming season. Whether that’s size, classification, hometowns or recruiting rankings coming out of high school, we’ve got you covered.

Also included in each article is a quick recap letting you know what to expect from that player for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.

Next up on the list is freshman running back Roydell Williams out of Hueytown (Ala.).

Height: 5-10 / Weight: 207

Class: Freshman

Hometown: Hueytown (Ala.)

High School: Hueytown High School

HS ranking (247Sports): 4-star / No. 76 overall / No. 9 RB / No. 4 ALA

HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / No. 90 overall / No. 7 RB / No. 3 ALA

Analysis: Roydell Williams wasn’t the highest rated running back Alabama signed in its 2020 recruiting class, but he’s certainly talented enough to eventually emerge as a lead back in the Tide’s backfield.

The Hueytown High School product has a prototypical body for an SEC runner while also possessing a wide variety of skills, both physical and mental, that should help him in his quest to eventually work his way up the depth chart.

With Najee Harris, Brian Robinson Jr., Trey Sanders and Keilan Robinson all still on the roster, it will be tough for Williams to earn a significant role — if at all — in 2020, but 2021 and beyond should be interesting as Harris and Robinson both move on to the NFL.

What will be the carry distribution between Williams and fellow freshmen Jase McClellan and Kyle Edwards in a couple of years? That’s anyone’s guess, but it’s a good situation for Alabama to be in.
